- rrbaker, on 01/15/2009, -6/+43It'll be done when it's done. If there's one thing we've learned from the iPod Touch, it's worth the wait. Otherwise we end up with what seems like a very unfinished product. So WAIT. Who cares if it's not ready in October? I'll take a solid November release over a buggy October release any month.
Seriously, even as a fellow mac fanboy, even I'm sick of the bitch bitch bitch about where's our iPod Touch and then bitch bitch bitch "my screen isn't good enough." Chill already. - otatop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30http://www.d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.com/
- DavisCollins, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21I'm thinking that Leopard isn't going to go Gold Master in time for the October Release. If so, most likely October 31...
- KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Hell yeah! Fight the Man!
- davidwasman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Don't digg me down, but...what the hell is Gold Master? I'm a Mac owner and this is the first I ever heard the term. Someone clue me in.
**EDIT: Nevermind. Just revoke my geek credentials and ban me from internets...I found it - " (final/master copy of a software product release) " - vault, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Last Tuesday in October maybe
- philgmo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9His spelling was obviously right, as it wasn't underlined in red.
- joeycerone, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14***** amen to that.
- davidwasman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10So how 'Windows XP Updates' is this new Software Update Manager? Does it sit in the Finder and bother you? Does it download without your knowledge? The current Software Update is fine. Why do they need to 'fix' it?
- marcushe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The software update engine in OS X is more than just the little graphical interface that the user sees whenever a new update is available.
The update engine is run from the underlying UNIX engine, and has a "backdoor" for Apple Remote Desktop. Changes could be made to the back door, how packages are handled, checking for new updates, etc.
Really, packaged installers on the Mac are just like an RPM for linux - except that the Mac has a nice little package installer app - and automated installer app (software update). - Takuro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Screenshots:

Nothing too dramatically different. I'd like to know what the default wallpaper is for this build. Somebody claimed it looked similar to the purple galaxy wall from the last release, except in blue. - davidburns, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Or maybe a unified interface, FINALLY (instead of some windows looking like brushed metal, some not, some having no borders, etc).
- kaaBOOM, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5
"Apple's last major Mac OS X release (Tiger, 10.4) was declared Gold Master on March 31, 2005. Tiger was later launched in retail stores on Friday, April 29th, 2005, almost one month later."
Which means that as long as there is a Gold Master by the end of this month. Leopard is a go for next month. Everything I've read points to a release date of Friday, October 26th. - serpicolugnut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Usually when they are getting closer to the Final Candidate stage they actually release builds more often, so I'm very skeptical that they will make the Oct deadline. Also, Apple only has a vague deadline at that. With no mention of a specific date in October, and with only 5 weeks to go, I'm betting that Apple will not make the October deadline.
I'm jonesin' for Leopard, but would rather wait a month for a more stable/polished release. - rspeed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Egads, the next version of OS X is Vista?
- Ransomowris, on 10/10/2007, -1/+69a528d didn't do much. It just updated terminal, finder, and tested a new software update system (which happens to be very intrusive. reminds me of windows update. UGH).
- serpicolugnut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Uh, yeah, I'm using the WWDC beta (Student Dev). There's a lot more than that. iChat, Mail, Safari, Automator, iCal, PhotoBooth, FrontRow aren't new per se, but each of them is a significant update to the Tiger version. Plus, you get QuickLook, which is awesome. Underneath the hood, there's a who slew of updated UNIX stuff, not to mention built in SVN and Ruby/Rails. Plus, the developer tools have gotten significant updates (probably the biggest update since 10.0). With the new frameworks & tools, developers will be creating some kick ass Leopard only stuff very soon (look for TextMate 2 and Delicious LIbrary 2 to blow you away).
- dragazis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You forgot Safari. Safari hasn't nearly been crashing as much and it starts faster then before (surprising I know). As for the update being intrusive, well small Leopard updates like this come in two parts through Software Update. They are then combined and a restart and install is required. It's not necessarily intrusive as it is all automated. Maybe just the time to install in intrusive.
- dragazis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Bingo. Cosmetically Software Update hasn't been changed at all. It's still unobtrusive just like it has always been. They might have changed how they access their repositories, or some underlying code changes, but there really aren't any new features.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4core animation
- FenrisUlf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3After using it for a few weeks, the things I've come to appreciate are a fixed finder (million tiny bugs seem to be gone), brushed metal being *gone*, and the new aluminum/unified interface that fits more into a smaller space yet is cleaner at the same time.
The developer builds are full of bugs, sure, but it's already annoying going back to Tiger on my other machine. - Giga, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No *****. I would have thought that with this release, they were taking a step backwards...
- Cougarcat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Can you elaborate? How is it more intrusive?
Internal builds are up to 9a558, so I wouldn't be surprised to see another update next week. It seems as though this one was mainly to deliver the new software update. - TomFrost, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Wait with contempt, my friends!
- jocknerd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Actually, with this release, I think they are getting closer to being ready. This is the third update in the last two months. That tells me there is less change taking place between updates.
- pkulak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They can change a lot of how something like that works without changing the UI at all.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3humblegay.com more like
- dragazis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I updated yesterday and it's still the same purple galaxy wallpaper unless you are using your own.
- Shahreel, on 05/25/2008, -0/+3Screenshots?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Core Animation is only of potential interest. It all depends on what developers do with it. The simple fact that it's there doesn't do much for me.
- r00fus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Issue is that Apple as a public company has to report to their stockholders. Missing a release date would batter the stocks... so there's a penalty for doing so. Not to mention the anti-apple mainstream media who love to play up anything that wallstreet-wonder Apple does wrong.
Though I think Apple is in a strong position to delay if they really need to (read: Steve doesn't like it)... gawd, how many times did Microsoft miss their release dates? - rspeed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Time Machine is actually pretty cool. My ass has been saved by backups more times than I care to remember.
- Kelmon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I want it just for the new developer tools and Objective-C 2.0. So, yeah, it's a big deal for me.
- ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2With better spell and grammar checking!
- DavisCollins, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Thats possible.
- MtheoryX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That's just your unimaginative opinion.
Some people are actually doing some exciting things with Leopard Server and Client.
If you want to stick with Tiger, then do it. But don't claim that there are no compelling features because you're talking out your arse. - carltonsmith, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3defiantly?
- Kelmon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Curiously, it is exciting. You'll note that it's a very small update (9A528 to 9A528d) and that implies that very little actually needed to be done so the OS is almost ready. I won't bet against this being the Release Candidate, or at least damned close to being it.
- Kelmon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'd just like to note that as much as I agree with the sentiment of the post, the iPod Touch wasn't worth the wait. What I wanted was the best iPod that Apple has produced and what I got was a crippled iPhone. Not that I'm bitter or anything...
Bring on Leopard! Back to the drawing board (or at least to the drawer where Apple stashed the removed features) for the iPod Touch. - itsPinkCharms, on 10/10/2007, -13/+14Leopard is defiantly worth waiting for.
- msgyrd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Really though...did you honestly expect the iPod Touch to not be a crippled iPhone? People were predicting that the day the iPhone was released.
- tobsterius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If Apple decides to do such a thing (which I kinda remember them doing in the past) They'll announce it when they annouce the release of the final version... patience is a virtue...
- joel8x, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I agree with you - my take on it is that since 10.4 came out, I have not been eagerly anticipating 10.5 because 10.4 is rock solid and really is a great OS. Of course I will upgrade to 10.5, but I don't want to deal with an unfinished product so I'm happy they are taking their time with this one.
- dragon76, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2The only compelling features from Leopard are QuickLook and Spaces. They're the only features that I use or even NOTICE with any regularity. Take it from experience, you aren't missing much.
- cawpin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"If there's one thing we've learned from the iPod Touch, it's worth the wait." What? If we learned anything from that product it's that Apple will find a way to screw something up if they can. 16GB isn't nearly big enough for anyone that uses a video iPod. I have 20GB of music on mine and the last ~10 GB is usually about half full of podcasts.
- MtheoryX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Um, that's because you're just an *end user*. You won't be able to appreciate most new features in Client and Server. Sorry.
- MtheoryX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Seriously, at this point, if you don't have a working copy of, or a decent source to get a copy of, the developer builds then you aren't a developer. Take your end user ticket and just sit patiently in line.
- msgyrd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1While it's minor and nothing drastically helpful, I do like stacks.
- NotShorty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Where's the "free upgrades for hardware bought after xx/xx/2007??"
Even M$ did that with Vista. Fk Apple. Anxiously awaiting Google's Linux distro and inevitable world domination... - dima767, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0No matter when it's actually released, it will be great, I'm sure. I personally won't lose my sleep if they "miss" the virtual October deadline.
