- brstilson, on 12/10/2007, -1/+18I wonder if these Mac Rumor sites have any sources that aren't "very reliable."
- rowlodge, on 12/10/2007, -1/+14steve jobs, "oh and one more thing, it has a weird touch pad"
- inactive, on 12/10/2007, -0/+10so, basically, this:
http://www.9to5mac.com/apple-to-release-new-alumin ... - llsethj, on 12/10/2007, -1/+10Whatever happens, this is going to be an amazing product. I have been holding out with a Sony Vaio for WAY too long!
- RealHyperX, on 12/10/2007, -0/+7The lenovo x61 is ultra portable. The MacBook is a brick in comparison.
- hadak, on 12/10/2007, -2/+9My condolences.
- TheHayze, on 12/10/2007, -5/+12And here I thought the MacBook was a ultra portable laptop... Huh, live and learn I suppose.
But if Apple is so inclined to finally make a tablet with flash NAND, I would definately be in support of such a product. - Tobor, on 12/10/2007, -0/+7I was looking at my iPhone today, then the touchpad on my Macbook. They are similar in size. How awesome would a multitouch visual display trackpad be? Of course, a full screen glass multitouch tablet would be even better.
- taxali, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5Yea but those menus are a dream to use on Macbooks. You never have to worry about aim. Just flick your finger up and boom! you're at the menu.
- ferrariman60, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4My friend, you've just descried the asus eee. The only problem with that thing is the keys are frickin small, so I'm unable to use one. Maybe given time, but my hands aren't the right size.
- nestcrw, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4Plus do you know how much that would end up costing? I know that Apple can drive down prices (somewhat). But a 64GB SSD is too expensive.
- stupidclese, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3People buy mac mini's, don't they? Those are fairly bare bones, I think. This would be a more powerful version of that, albeit bigger and expandable, but could still be beautiful. The 'overall experience' would still be there, just as with any other apple made hardware. You could still throw in the apple remote and all the other bells and whistles that make a mac a mac. But now you could cater to the curious pc user who doesn't want an all in one unit, or weak machine they can't trick out. I think there are a lot of gamers, nerds and windows developers who would love this. There current price points and model selections (while all sweet looking) are alienating a lot of potential customers.
- mypreciousss, on 12/10/2007, -2/+5Well, no matter how amazing this is going to be, I probably won't be able to afford one.. boo hoo!
- jj101, on 12/10/2007, -1/+4Me too. BUt i hope its reasonably priced. Have a Mac Book already which is pretty portable but dont want to take it out except for work. Not the type of thing you want to drop or leave behind while drunk... A cheap and super portable lappy for email/docs/surfing would be great.
- Klarth, on 12/10/2007, -1/+4How about living in reality?
How about realising that a 7" touchscreen/keyboard combo isn't exactly ergonomic for a fully-fledged computer? - crazybrit, on 12/11/2007, -0/+3THEY'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE A MULTITOUCH LAPTOP. SHUT THE ***** UP, EVERYONE.
- RealHyperX, on 12/10/2007, -1/+3I agree. On Macbooks its fine. But still, when I want to put two apps side by side, I like to see the menus for those apps.
- auxplage, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2You obviously need to read about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitts'_law
- thereadr, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2Soon you will be able to transport your laptop telepathically from point A to point B in just 16 nanoseconds, just by thinking of your secret pass phrase.
- Trax91, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2What do you mean almost? I'm gonna bet its four to five times!
- LeeSoong, on 12/10/2007, -5/+7EEE PC Laptop is already available, Apple's mini-laptop would have to be better,
how about a 7" Touch MacBook, that runs all OS X software, 2 GB RAM, and a 64 GB Flash drive?
No keyboard, just the on screen keys like the iPod touch, plus support for Bluetooth wireless keyboards, mice, microphones, and headphones - nestcrw, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2It did catch people off guard, the keys are just too ***** small though. If anyone could get this design right, Apple can.
- EdwardsNH, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2Well, it would be nice for travel, and with the bluetooth keyboard he also mentioned, it would be something I would like. Of course, you could get more functionality if it has a keyboard... like a mini laptop. Hmmmm
- zeejay, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2If the goal is 14 hours of battery life like that Intel prototype, I wouldn't bet on a discrete GPU. The form factor and battery life should both be quite sufficient to justify a high price tag, for the right market.
- nestcrw, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2While that is a good idea, its something that Apple would never get into. Their whole thing is all about overall experience, and especially ease of use. Why would they mass market a bare bones machine?
But yes, all of us geeks on digg would be all over that. - tortfeasor, on 12/10/2007, -1/+3retard
- inactive, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1If you go back to Windows because of that you are retarded.
- longofest, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1You're right for some of the sites that are a little more shady. But, for instance, better sites will either not publish unreliable sources, or a site like MacRumors will put less reliable stuff on Page 2 (http://page2.macrumors.com)
- spargett, on 12/11/2007, -0/+1"What we are wondering: Will there be colors like the Nanos? (Red) would be hott."
UGhhh.... *puke* That would be the ugliest Mac ever created. - zeejay, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Invisible.
- LeeSoong, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.oqo.com/products/docking_station/index. ...
OQO-2 with Docking station is the best 'on-the-go' and work at the desk machine I have ever seen. Amazing product. - nestcrw, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1I totally agree with you. The most we can do is wait for macworld & summer every year to see if it could ever happen. For all we know, this could be in the works right now, this is Apple we're talking about here.
- SteveMax, on 12/10/2007, -1/+2Unfortunately, the 7'' touch screen would make this monster almost twice as expensive as the EEE. They wouldn't compete in the market at all.
- Tippis, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Ultra-portables have been around for 6-7 years...
Below them are the sub-notebooks, palmtops and UMPCs - thewump, on 12/10/2007, -4/+5ooo aaa EEE
- inactive, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Get a Wacom, with all the menus stay in the same place its perfect.. with a bit of practice you don't even need to look.
Plus, the new Bamboo's are about the same price as the mac mouse. - DouglasScott, on 12/10/2007, -1/+1intel showed this some time ago, I wonder if it is part of the same project:
http://images.businessweek.com/ss/07/05/0524_metro ... - deadnoob, on 12/10/2007, -1/+1im starting to think this is going to happen. there really hasnt been any other solid rumors out there. i think they are going to upgrade the iphones memory, introduce smaller laptops and possibly upgrade current MBP
- snowwrestler, on 12/10/2007, -1/+0I think we're just going to see the MacBook updated to aluminum, with maybe some minor improvements. First the iMac, then the iPod. The only thing Apple still makes in that white or black plastic is the MacBook. They're going all aluminum with that, but I doubt we'll see radical changes.
- LeeSoong, on 12/10/2007, -2/+1It's only money...
- FredFredrickson, on 12/10/2007, -3/+2Ultra-portable? What's next, hyper-portable?
- Ellipsys, on 12/10/2007, -2/+1I've been waiting on buying a laptop for some time to see about the MBP refresh and this new laptop. I'm going to buy an Eee PC to be my ultraportable. When I buy a "real laptop" I want something with a discrete graphics card. If this laptop doesn't have a GeForce 8600 or something, I doubt it will be worth what Apple is selling it for, especially if they use the "pro" designation and pricing.
- PunkRockRalph, on 12/10/2007, -4/+3as much fun as speculation is,
just ***** tell us already. - TheHayze, on 12/10/2007, -4/+2Really?? There are laptops lighter then the macbook??? When I say laptop, I mean the whole package. Webcam, full keyboard, decently sized HDD (100gbs or more), and a quality processor.
But you know, now that I think about it a a bit more... I have always been a fan of Lenovos; so i'm not surprised in the least. - Jeez, on 12/10/2007, -4/+2Apple needs a product to compete with Eee which is on pace to overtake MacBook worldwide sales by itself according to the latest Fortune magazine article piece. I think Asus caught a lot of pc companies off guard.
- RealHyperX, on 12/10/2007, -3/+1I came from windows world to the mac, and this is one feature that absolutely sucks to me. Prob the reason I will go back to windows.
- stupidclese, on 12/10/2007, -4/+2This seems like a cool toy I suppose, that is probably bound to impress, but I'm not convinced there is a significant market for this. Even if they corner the market for tablets, how many units can they actually move?
There is a huge market that Apple is missing right now, and that is the market just looking for a decent 'beige box' type machine that users can buy cheap and throw their own components into. They could sell you a pretty bare bones machine, with a decent processor, maybe a gig of ram , and integrated video. That's it. Think of it as your basic dell with a nicer case, and a 100-200 dollar premium, around an $800 price tag. Is it too much to ask for apple to release a sub $1000 box ,that doesn't have an integrated monitor, that users can upgrade, dual boot in to vista, max out the ram and put in a decent video card. Who in their right mind would buy anything like a dell , hp or gateway if such a machine existed? Such a machine would probably cut into the mac mini and mac pro space, but would generate much more revenue in the end. Since the name mac pro is taken, you could call it, oh I don' know....Macintosh maybe? - Interestingness, on 12/10/2007, -6/+1or, exactly like this...
http://thunkdifferent.com/2007/12/10/apple-ultra-p ... - OSJunky, on 12/10/2007, -10/+5tablet/laptop hybrid ftw!
