Mac Pro = Power Mac
Mac = iMac
Mac mini = Mac mini (duh)
Portables:
Macbook Pro = Powerbook
Macbook = iBook/12" Powerbook
Macbook mini = Ultraportable/tablet
I like that. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22MacWorld is in Jan '07. Sure that portable would be cool, but besides the lack of proof, it's in JAN '07!!!
- cmiller1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17" 'We need to have devices that boot up very rapidly,' Sean Maloney, the head of Intel's mobility group, told developers at the conference. 'The same way you come off a plane and get a cell phone signal immediately.' "
Worst analogy ever. - marix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Please please let it be called the newton. Ill take 5!
- theotheragentm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Macworld San Francisco? That's not a rumor. That a horrible tease!
- marix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15sounds like you'll be wanting a computer from the year 2015.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"no optical drive"
What i'd like to know is what he has against CD's and DVD's?? - gabebear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6How often do you use your optical drive? I use my optical drive to install software and archive stuff, which I almost only do when I'm at home. Optical drives eat up a lot of valuable space, weight, and power on an ultra-portable.
- Petarded, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6He should of said something along the lines of "the same way you turn on your tv and you get a picture right away."
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I couldn't agree more! I was like, what the hell does mean by that?
- Terminaltor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Repeating pattern :
Apple farts, giant Digg hurricane ensues. - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Aussie, if you come to Apple's developer conference, I'll be happy to prove to you that I live here.
-jcr - gypsyjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4By ultra-portable do they mean one you can safely put on your lap?
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It'd be a fresh new start! It's a good name. *Hopes there is never a Granny Smith Mac*
- UserAgent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4We have this technology now... It's called sleep mode. Nearly every PowerBook (and most PC laptops too) made has it... I really don't get why everyone keeps making a big deal about improving boot times. Just don't turn the computer off. The only time I've turned my PowerBook off is to make some kind of hardware change like upgrading the ram. Hell, you can even change the battery while it's in sleep mode.
- metalsahu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That just proves that there is a big market for portable mobile devices but execution is key to success. Apple has a proven track record of producing devices which are ultra-cool/chic to be seen in public with...not to mention having great usability.
- raj_d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3*yawn* and in 2010 MacWorld apple are announcing their nuclear powered thumb pod. So sick of this analyst crap, anyone can predict product announcements, show me some evidence!
- yongfook, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6QUAD CORE INTEL POWERMACS EXPECTED SOME TIME IN FUTURE!
- ElectroBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not going backwards.
It's looking at the future.
Once you install your OS, you d/l your apps (Mac OS X dowloads), d/l your songs (iTunes Music Store), d/l your videos/movies (iTunes Music Store/P2P type services), and d/l your documents (.Mac/Google Spreadsheet/Google Writley). Then you either connect to the internet through your broadband connection/wifi or through a EVDO USB adapter. You're connected 24/7 and once your apps/music/videos/documents are either on the internet or on your portable, there's no need for a floppy or cd/dvd drive. - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed that optical drives are generally not a constant use item, but you do need them for vital tasks. I'd say that, for an ultra slim portable, an external SuperDrive would do the trick as long as it was a standard item with the computer. Otherwise, how are you going to do upgrade the OS, or reinstall it (or any software, for that matter).
- Photar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That wouldn't be hard either. At least the rumor will change half a dozen times in a year.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Apple needs to put everything else on pause and make DAMN sure they have a bitchin' PowerMac update at the WWDC in August. Anything in addition to or after that is just gravy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, people went crazy for the Origami/UMPC when it was announced, as well. They saw that slick-lookin' machine in the PR video and thought Microsoft was on to something big. The excitement carried over until we got our first look at the UMPCs, their size, battery life, power and the like. They didn't resemble the ones Microsoft teased us with and had many, many practical deficiencies.
It's not so much that there's fanboy nonsense or a double-standard as much as it was that the UMPC had its hype deflated by a lackluster end-product. Unfortunately, you don't seem to be able to understand something with that much nuance, so I'll leave you to your cheap snipes. - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Exactly. I'd rather want info on something that is going to be happening sooner rather than later.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"The rumor will change more times than my underwear between now and then."
So, uh, more than once? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sounds too good to be true. Right now the ultra portable market sucks. Even the Origami models. The market feels as if it's dominated by Sharp of all tech companies. Maybe the Origami models will change this... That's disappointing. Decent ones cost twice as much as a new computer and it's unlikely Apple will be cheaper with all their fanboys willing to pay more for a case designed by and for metrosexuals. But competition is always good. So if Apple goes through with this, a full, attached keyboard please.
- speedyrev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Once or twice anyway =)
- valkyries, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5wow, Microsofts Origami comes out and almost everyone hates it. Apple might come out with something similar and people go crazy over it?
- hollywoodone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3""no optical drive"
What i'd like to know is what he has against CD's and DVD's??"
probably size, and or power consumption - diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I've said this once, I've said it a thousand times.
Everybody SAYS they want these, but they never sell.
The problem in a nutshell, is that a 'midi' device -- as in midway between the size of a cell phone and laptop -- satisfies neither market. The devices are too big (and expensive) to be everyday portable (like a cell phone) and their screens sizes (and usually a lack of processing power) leave users wishing they had a notebook. - voicimas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4aside from the solid state storage, these types of notebooks are around now. okay, maybe 9 hours of battery life, but still ridiculously long.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"He should of said something along the lines of "the same way you turn on your tv and you get a picture right away."
I take it you don't have an LCD tv? - Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What market will they be selling this too? It sounds like it will be too big to carry around in your pocket as a PDA. Why buy this when you can get a laptop.
- jarcoal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i don't really watch dvds, and most everything else i can get online
- parislemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Whatever it is it will for sure be better then Microsoft's ho-hum "Origami" UMPCs.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I live in Binghamton, NY but if you do a trace route on my IP it says im in Rochester. That is 300 some odd miles away.
- Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No it isn't. Apple has one guy working part time on their handwriting engine Inkwell. It has a long way to go before it would be ready for a real product. Apple just has not shown an interest in making the kind of investment required for a pen based product to work.
Nothing to see here. Move along. - bebop717, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Meh it's just a new version of the ipod video that has a flash card rather than a hard drive.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Have you even used inkwell? I assume not, going by your comment.
- dotuplink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3THE NEWTON IS COMING BACK!
- safer9999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Where is my IPHONE!!!!!!!!
Neal Saferstein - StoneWolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My guess is that they're aiming for the same market that buys the 3 lb Sony T-series laptops.
- armature, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.lookoutfarm.com/whats_growin/mcintosh_apples.asp sigh... next out. the Apple Red-Delicious line!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5introducing the iMac INVISO!!!!!!! So small it dosent exsist, be amazed and bewildered by its genius.
- JGJones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seem that most people are talking about Boot Camp for games and the other for other Windows apps...however my question is to do with video conferencing. Being profoundly deaf I use a videophone software (Vcon vPoint HD 7.0) which is a H323 and SIP capable videophone software that can do videos in h.264 and allows me to call up relay system such as BDA VRS - http://www.signvrs.org.uk/.
My question is to do with - is Parellel capable of running Vcon vPoint HD? - it is a Windows only application and I cannot find a single H323/SIP videophone software for OSX hence the need for Windows.
Cheers - speedyrev, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2P-lease! I might believe a rumor about next month, but next year? The rumor will change more times than my underwear between now and then.
- blankartist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with diggerphelps, these gadgets always turn out to be way too expensive and never replace anything. In the end, it's just *another* thing you have to sync with.
- Sequence, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So True...
We need to have devices that are really fast, Sean Maloney, the head of Intel's mobility group, told developers at the conference. "The same speed you move your fingers on your keyboard between two different keys." :) - splandorf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's no magic prognostication here, Apple doesn't need to invent revolutionary hardware either. The only thing they need to do is implement an Apple version of Sony's TX-series laptops. I've had a Tx650P for nearly 1.5 years already, it's got:
- integrated DVD-RW
- glossy LED-backlit 11.1” 1366x768 screen
- Pentium M 1.2 ghz (core solo ULV is the update to this)
- 802.11b/g
- weighs 2.7 lbs
- 6+ hour battery life.
By the time Apple (supposedly) announces the Mac Ultraportable, this spec sheet will be 2-year old technology!
I've been waiting ever since the introduction of OSX for Apple to come out with a sub-3-pound ultraportable. I do all of my work & computing from this machine, I take it with me everywhere, I find all hardware on board (e.g. DVD-burner) crucial, it's not a desktop "supplement", it's my single computer.
The second Apple introduces a laptop with the specs I've listed above, I'm switching over.....
Believe me, there's a huge untapped market out there for an entirely realistically spec'd small form factor Apple notebook.
No miracles required. - blankartist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You mean like the successful Newton?
