- chrillen, on 07/09/2008, -13/+66As a gamer it's the best thing that you have. Gaming on a Mac is crappy, you can barely upgrade your system. Most people don't feel like shelling out 2500$ every time they need a new graphics card just because you can't just change it.
- mmijatov, on 07/08/2008, -35/+81I'm not an MS basher, but I just don't see such a compelling reason to stay on the Windows platform anymore.
- TRScheel, on 07/09/2008, -5/+33@Badandy127
It is NO where near as easy to upgrade a mac as it is a windows based machine simply because of hardware constraints. - EtherGnat, on 07/09/2008, -0/+26Every time I see somebody make a compatibility comment about Mac or Linux they get dugg down, presumably because people think that's not a valid issue. Yet frequently when there is new hardware, software, or web services I see lots of users complaining about how "lame" it is that they don't support Linux/OS X.
Yes, I'm well aware there are virtual machine and dual boot options for running Windows applications but purchasing, running, and maintaining two OSs isn't without its own downfalls. Everybody should choose their OS based on their own needs, but don't pretend compatibility isn't a valid criteria. - duke_nate, on 07/09/2008, -6/+28SHHHHHH, they dont want you to know that......
- JasonCox, on 07/09/2008, -20/+41And as an MS user I cant see any compelling reason to switch to a mac.

- evildemonic, on 07/09/2008, -2/+22I know everybody likes to get all up in arms over Mac vs. PC. Let's be honest for just a minute...
Macs are great, however, to say there is "no compelling reason to stay on the Windows platform anymore" is *****. Bang-for-your-buck still favors non-Mac PCs, and if you are a serious gamer the Windows-PC is also your better choice. Argue it all you want, but you all should know it's true.
Linux is awesome, Macs are awesome...but, sadly, Windows is still the better choice for some situations. - vivvivtzz, on 07/09/2008, -11/+29macs take a little bit of getting used to, after dealing with win32 boxes for years and years..but a curious thing soon happens - you begin to love thing. ask a person what they think about their mac - they usually say they love it.
/love my macbook - dnnr, on 07/09/2008, -5/+22One part of the article I gotta gripe with - load times.
Who even turns off their computer these days? I do before I go to bed, and when I need to install updates, but that's about it. Load times have SO little to do with OS performance. I couldn't care less if it took 5 solid minutes, just do it when it's convenient people!
I'm running VISTA and loving it, but I definitely appreciate what Apple is doing for the industry and Mac OS X's influence as well. - robEstyles, on 07/09/2008, -7/+23"Ship" not sold.
- fLUx1337, on 07/09/2008, -11/+27Me either.
I have recently (last week) got my first Mac, and although for the past 2yrs I have been using Vista, I now HATE IT.
I'm sorry if this sounds like a general Vista bashing message.....but wait it actually is. Don't get me wrong, I know after defending Vista for the past 2yrs it isn't as bad as people make out, but the whole Windows platform just seems so wrong after using something which has had a lot of thought put into it. OSX isn't perfect, but it feels a million times better than Windows on its current course will ever be...
Obviously the gaming thing sucks, but Macs ain't for gaming. The thing which makes them so good, also makes them bad - it has a lot smaller market share, so has less attacks against it, but it also has less games built for it due to a smaller demand, so Apple has basically put the worst graphics they could into most macs, just enough to run more basic games (WoW, etc..), and movie editing software.
Same goes for the OS itself only really being able to run on Apple hardware (yes I know, OSX86) - we have to buy overpriced hardware, but we also have perfect compatibility.
I'm sure OSX vs. Windows will never end, but until Windows gets its act together, I know where I'm going to be... - alex7575, on 07/09/2008, -8/+23Badandy127,
You either don't own a Mac Pro, or if you do, you never bothered trying to upgrade it. Also, the old MP's weren't supported by the new Nvidia 8800 GT upgrade. So much for expandability.
Way to preach what you don't know. - daok, on 07/09/2008, -1/+14@krischekrische Try to play Diablo or Starcraft with a console, good luck ;)
- PaulMassive, on 07/08/2008, -13/+26I guess compatibility is the main issue - obviously some companys have proprietary software that they use daily which runs only on the Windows platform. For everyone else...why not use OSX or Linux ?
- hectordejesus, on 07/09/2008, -2/+15That's sad but mine is worse... I bought an iMac to match my Netgear router.
- dystra, on 07/09/2008, -6/+18"The researcher maintains that Apple should ship between 2.4 to 2.5 million Macs over the three-month period..."
"should" ship? - estvir, on 07/09/2008, -2/+14Oh yes, let's simply discount something because it's not completely positive about Apple.
It would stifle Apples innovation if they were the market leader? It would stifle the whole bloody market. - LordRahl72, on 07/09/2008, -2/+14Yes you can put just about any hardware in there but there is 2 HUGE problems. Finding drivers for that new hardware and the biggest problem is finding Mac games to play on that new hardware.
- kecher, on 07/09/2008, -14/+25I gather you've never used a Mac?
- hectordejesus, on 07/09/2008, -1/+12The main point... Use what is functional for you! What OS doesn't have a music player, word processor, and web browser? Windows, Mac OS X, Linux... whatever. Kats needs to quit making a "technological jihad" against each other and chill out.
- worminater, on 07/09/2008, -1/+12@kraetos
But at that point you have a faster pc for gaming; why spend the 1100-1500 for the MacBook if portability was never a consideration? - Badandy127, on 07/09/2008, -14/+24If someone can't get their software to work on a mac, they're an idiot.
Leopard as buggy as Vista? Not for me, and I have both.
Thousands of dollars on an overpriced computer? The macbook is well priced, and the premium you pay (small on a macbook) is well made up by how intuitive the OS is, no need to constantly maintain your comp with antivirus, no need to get other media applications, and such... - rolf, on 07/09/2008, -2/+11What is it that people are get so pissed about what others use? The anti-mac zealot is as bad or worse than the mac zealot. People on PCs can stay with MS or switch to Ubuntu - it's also a good platform with choices. Don't get angry just because others enjoy a computer that's different than yours.
- JasonCox, on 07/09/2008, -5/+14For $600 bucks, from Apple I can get a small box. For $600 bucks, from Dell, I can get a choice of quite a few laptops and a full range of (complete) desktop systems.
- alex7575, on 07/09/2008, -0/+9Funny thing is, I own a Macbook Air (wife), a Macbook(mine), a Mac Pro(mine), 2 iPhones (mine + wife), 2 AppleTVs, a TimeCapsule.
I love Apple products, don't care for the company itself, and I hate you people. And by you people I mean my fellow Mac users. - frostbyt, on 07/09/2008, -6/+15I was on the fence either to buy a Mac or Build a new PC. I built a new PC with better hardware than come with a Mac for half the price.
Vista 64
4 gigs of ram
3 ghz CPU with 6 meg of cache
Raid 0 HD setup
512 meg video card using DDR3
Sorry Apple your products are nice, but the ones I build are faster. - hamobu, on 07/09/2008, -3/+12Dugg for honesty
- andejp12, on 07/09/2008, -9/+18I've purchased my first two macs this year and neither is because I don't like vista.
I've been eyeing up a Mac for the past few years and the only thing that has changed for me is that I could afford to buy one (First job out of college). If anything I'd say that Apple is shipping more macs because people are noticing them more and realizing that they're simple to use (not saying that other OSs aren't easy to use I just find that OS X tends to be more intuitive).
I guess analysts just want to keep bashing vista (even though now it seems to be quite useable). - JasonCox, on 07/09/2008, -4/+13Based on statistics, if Apple ships 2.5 million Macs, that means Microsoft will sell an additional 1.8 million copies of Vista; so in the end both shareholders win.
- freezerburn666, on 07/09/2008, -1/+9well that doesn't sound like a waste of money at all
- Shigglyboo, on 07/09/2008, -14/+22I've been a PC user from the beginning. I bought a Macbook Pro recently. Thing is freakin' sick. I love it. Eventually I'll need to upgrade my studio computer (audio/video recording/editing workstation). I absolutely will not go to Vista. I'll either get a newer machine and simply run XP or switch to something that is not Windows. They're in a pickle right now. Most people I know don't want to go to Vista. They just need to apologize and release a better OS. If they don't I'm honestly rooting for Linux to finally enter the market. Failing that, Apple will be the only choice.
- AZTriGuy, on 07/09/2008, -15/+23It was actually a combination of Windows Vista and a Dell laptop that wouldn't perform as it should and kept breaking down that caused me to switch to the Macbook Pro that I'm on now. To be honest, there was certainly some getting used to after switching, but after using it for a few months now I love it and can't see going back.
- revjustin2, on 07/09/2008, -0/+8I bought both a MacBook AND a Dell Laptop running Vista this year at roughly the same time. How's that for screwing with the numbers?
So far, they both work rather well. I use the MacBook a lot more since the Dell is technically my wife's and having used PC's almost exclusively professionally and otherwise, I have to admit that I do enjoy the Mac. I am wondering, however, which one is going to give me problems first? - johnhummel, on 07/09/2008, -2/+10I've had 3 coworkers ask me about Macs and if they could use them - and every damn one said "Well, I hate Vista." These aren't techheads or gurus - but they just aren't loving Windows Vista.
- worminater, on 07/09/2008, -2/+10"Obviously the gaming thing sucks, but Macs ain't for gaming. So it's biggest advantage is a lack of hardware/software support? Yep. Welcome to denial. - chaoswings, on 07/09/2008, -1/+8People pirate OSX as well.
- alex7575, on 07/09/2008, -4/+11innovation? What is that Apple innovated? What change in thinking was done by Apple? Just because their slogan says so, it doesn't make it so.
They're so innovative, they still use a one button mouse.
If innovation means that instead of Windows I'm using something else... then yeah... - briLo, on 07/09/2008, -4/+11Ahh the beauty of advertising to the general public; they'll believe anything they read or see!!!
I'm a MS person by trade; it's work enviornment but run both Vista and some Linux variations at home and have to tell you, there's much more I can do on my Vista machine than on my Linux os's.
A trend I've noticed as well, Mac users upgrade systems and not parts; MS & Linux users upgrade parts and reuse the same OS. I know, digg it down, I'm falling.................... - Zippo, on 07/09/2008, -0/+7Xcode, which is used to develop Mac applications, comes free with OS X. It's not an express version, either - it's the full deal.
- wyrdness, on 07/09/2008, -1/+8I'm a software developer and several members of the development team that I work in are switching to Macs, rather than to Vista. Others have switched to Linux. Remember that OS X is Unix-based, so it's not just a friendly OS for non-techies, there's a lot of power under the hood.
- HoratioHellpop, on 07/09/2008, -8/+15//the whole Windows platform just seems so wrong after using something which has had a lot of thought put into it. OSX isn't perfect, but it feels a million times better than Windows on its current course will ever be...//
Concrete examples of the proof of this, other than personal preference?
None?
kthxbye - chadseld, on 07/09/2008, -0/+7All the Mac dev tools are free. They even come included on the OS X install DVD with all Macs.
- inactive, on 07/09/2008, -2/+9Honestly, if I want to opt out of windows, I'll start using Linux. I've tried Ubuntu and liked the platform pretty well. It was just the lack of compatibility and the fact that I enjoy gaming on my PC (yes I know about Wine, but not everything runs properly even with Wine). At least with Linux it is free and I can still use my own hardware configuration for a lot cheaper.
- pmrx, on 07/09/2008, -1/+7I use both OSX and Vista. I see flaws in both, and recognize both as good OS'. With that said, I can't help but wonder if the recent increase in popularity of Apple's platform isn't due to them having a near strangle-hold on the laptop market for college students for nearly the past decade. As these students graduate or near graduation, it seems a rock solid laptop which lasted them through their formative years, running an OS wrapped in marketing (an OS, btw, which is admittedly great), may kind of make them think twice about leaving the platform.
Personally, my main machine is a Vista box. I like OSX, but simply cannot afford or justify buying upgrades every 1.5 or 2 years. That said, my first Mac lasted me five years with no complaint. It was an eMac, and still has a place on my network. I only upgraded memory and added an Airport card. Part of the reason a Mac "just works" is because it stops or limits tinkering by the end user. Either way, I enjoy both Vista and OSX. - kraetos, on 07/09/2008, -5/+11Given how cheap it is to build your own box and acquire an OEM copy of XP, I think one of the best options around is to build a gaming rig, and use a MacBook for everything else.
Honestly, a decent gaming rig can be had for $600 + $200 for a 20" monitor you can use with both computers. Then $1100 - $1500 for a MacBook, you come to between $1900 and $2300 - way less than a Mac Pro, but more expandable AND you also have a laptop. - xsecretfiles, on 07/09/2008, -27/+33.....Call me a sellout, but I got a mac recently because I wanted to match with my iphone.
- estvir, on 07/09/2008, -4/+10If you're remotely going to rely a laptop to impress 'chicks' you already have next to no chance.
By the way, you're pathetic and you've completely fallen into Apple's stupid marketing. - sparql, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6The bulk of Windows users do not upgrade any hardware ever. They do the same thing Mac users do and use their computer till it is too slow then buy a new one. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the percentage of Mac users who do hardware upgrades is equal to that of Windows users. Considering the most common upgrades are more RAM or a larger HDD, which is just as easy to do on a Mac as any windows box.
I'm leaving *nix users out because *nix users are nerds.
The thing people seem to forget around here is what THE AVERAGE PC USER actually does with their PC. By posting on digg alone, you are probably outside the realm of the average user. -
