- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+43What are the chances we'll see this in 2007? Tiny!
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28that is a lame article
- dpotter2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22What a piece of crap... pure speculation with little foundation
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17More like no foundation.
- theworldisround, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15This is a Newton on steroids. I want one.
- cobaltgrc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12This would be swank but it'll never happen. :(
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9> Newton failed cause it was a wrong product at a wrong time.
Wrong. The timing was just fine. The problem was that the Newton turned out to be wildly popular amongst those in the medical profession and Apple did not understand that market or how to cater to them. On top of that, Apple was having some real financial woes at the time and they didn't have the time or the resources to figure it out. Jobs is on record with this fact. There was nothing at all wrong with the Newton including the timing of its arrival. This often-repeated thing about the Newton being too far ahead of its time or being the wrong thing at the wrong time is simlpy false. It was a success, but one that had to be let go for reasons that have nothing to do with the product per se. - earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13apples laptops are chunky?? compared to what? ultraportables with no optical drives?
this article has the credibility of... ummmm..... our government. - mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Meh. I can't stand Mac speculation. They put out some good (and some poor) products, just live with it. Why bother photoshopping a screen to look like a tablet because you hope they'll make something like it next year? If they do, great, but why get all hyped about something that probably wont happen?
Its one thing to speculate about, say, an Thinkpad X61 Tablet, because thats most likely going to happen, but who the hell knows with Apple. - MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Newton failed cause it was a wrong product at a wrong time.
Not that oragami did anything. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Seriously, if the Newton was any good, you'd be able to go out and buy the latest incarnation today. And you can't, so there."
Jobs killed the Newton to free up money for the iPod. Had they not done that, they wouldn't be able to start back the Newton project now (if they still care to). In this case, the ends justify the means. - krische, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9lol at the photoshop'd pic
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5kaz, but you forget, apple's dead platform technologies are so obviously better than anything that's been developed....this millenium. =)
- kelly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Lets assume that the product is real for a second.
Let's say this device has 12 hours of battery life, runs OS X apps nativly weighs less than 2lbs, has 802.11n wireless networking and bluetooth built in and comes prebundled with some specialized apps.
And even though there are no products like on on the market today, can everyone agree that the antimac concensus will be that Apple is doing nothing innovative with its release? - kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Apple really should bring back a device like the Newton. That was so ahead of its time. Possible in the form of an UMPC (considering it's Intel's initiative) rather than a large tablet that is more annoying, at least i find them to be.
- MBarnwell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7or mirror the sides properly, the left doesn't totally look like the right...and i thought i am uninspired.
- theonlyvlad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I still have a MessagePad 130, I believe, on my shelf. I haven't used it, for a while, due to me not being a PDA person, but as far as PDAs go, I still consider it one of the best. With an adjustment for its age.
Newtons died not because they sucked. Because software support for it lost to the Palm. So for some reason Apple stopped fighting. I don't know why... I guess it was all in Steve's big master plan. I wish they'd bring them back though....
The best part of the newton is that it uses AA batteries. That means as long as they keep making AAs in the world, I will be able to run my newton. So far it's over a decade old. My more recent 3 year old iPaq has battery span of about 5 minutes by now. - marksy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3how can it be unknown, if you know about it :p
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"That’s according to rabid Apple fansites spanning the interweb. They all seem to think we’ll get our hands on an ultra-portable from the Mac makers of Cupertino at some point next year."
Ummmm. I haven't seen a single "rabid Apple fansite" predicting a tablet next year. - jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3and what makes anyone think, especially jobs, that apple understand the portable pda device market any better now?
- Kazbaeden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That’s according to rabid Apple fansites spanning the interweb == One post on some 14 year old's unknown blog
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Apple laptops are too large, in my opinion. I just bought a 13" MacBook, and it dwarfs my Fujitsu P-series.
As someone who goes everywhere with my laptop, I need to carry something that weighs two pounds or less, can fit in a messenger bag with plenty of room for everything else, and still has a proper keyboard and can run all my day-to-day apps (Office apps, email, basic image editing, etc.).
The MacBook is my machine for travelling, or going from one room to another in the apartment, but it's not small enough to be my run around machine. For that, I have my 10" Fujitsu, which I run Ubuntu on, meaning I get fast performance and ultra-portability.
If I could run Mac OS X on this, it would be my only laptop. I hope they do come out with this. - handheldchimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They make this and they will start to dominate the handheld/pocket pc world...or not they could also screw it up. I personally would like to see it.
- blankartist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey, it's the World's No 1 gadget mag. And they have scantly dressed woman in their masthead to prove it. They' can't be fibbin'!
- marksy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this could be the device to implement the "gestures" patent?
if so, it may be just a touch-screen device, with a visual keyboard / mouse integrated into the screen. could be awesome. although, why would i want one.. for use between my macbook and work computer? - maehem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Last year I interviewed for a position that required prior experience with wearable computers. They are definitely up to something in the "smaller computer" space.
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I find myself wondering how well the whole dock system will translate to a tablet format. Wait and see (if it really is real).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7marked as inaccurate - speculation is lame
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"Short battery life, awkward controls"
We have this already; it's called a MacBook Pro.
And by the way, pen computing FAILED. No keyboard = ***** "computer."
And stop posting this stupid ***** about flash memory saving the day. FLASH MEMORY WEARS OUT. - aallan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We've been talking about this for a about a year now, ever since last November in fact,
http://www.babilim.co.uk/blog/2005/11/no-hard-drive-means-instant-on.html
in the hopes that there will be something to replace the 12 inch Powerbook
http://www.babilim.co.uk/blog/2006/01/future-for-apple-powerbook.html
http://www.babilim.co.uk/blog/2006/01/one-more-thing.html
after the MacBook Pros started to roll off the production lines in January. So far all we have is rumours, speculation and some 2GB NAND flash chips that people aren't really doing that much with yet (presumably because they're so expensive). - euphoriadj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2works great on my tablet Pc
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2another day, another unsubstantiated rumour... *yawn* + who cares!
- marksy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah, gestures right?
- nerd05, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Let's keep in mind that Apple does have a patent for such a device (sorry, too lazy to back that with a link), and they already have all the software technologies well in place (Ink has been around since OS 10.2 and is quite decent).
If I had the money and Apple released something like this, I would, without any knowledge of the product, order/preorder it. - macslut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is lame because it's such incredibly old speculation and has no basis for the time table or other references. Swathes of fans in mourning over the 12" PowerBook being replaced by the 13" MacBook???
Also, the thought that OS X would be scaled down for this is off. For it to be useful, it would need all of OS X...or at least the minimum configuration currently avalaible which is only 1.5GB to 2GB. - rjghwruigvyoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Um you guys the picture is supposed to represent what they're talking about. Its not confirmed that this is what it'll look like, someone just made the mockup so we could see what it would look like. Calm down dude.
They do have that little touch functioning patent, dont they? - briansalo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maaaybe if it was as cheap as possible, had bluetooth, and ran fairly smoothly on video... I'd consider sticking one on my wall :P
For video and calendar type purposes, that'd be kind of cool. - LowFuel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5It says Apple in the title, good enough!
- jacks0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting .. I'd like to see just what this tablet-pc's market is though. Personally I don't see any tablet-pc taking off, except for specialized use like a courier.. Then again, most of those are smaller, and task-specific.
- Kakou, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3sounds like a 16x9 iPod, or and iPhone, both of which were "confirmed" for release september 12th, as I recall. buried for lack of authentic sources (none)
- swindmill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How in the world could you say the MacBook Pro has "awkward controls"?
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3there would be nothing innovative in that product, other than power efficiency, and this is an area that has nothing to do with apple's software, but rather the hardware - which they don't make themselves.
- euphoriadj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually Tablet PC come with win xp pro and some tools
When vista come out you are supposed to buy one disk, and many licenses
One for tablets, one for bus., one for family one for what ever flavor of win you want
slick marketing, but very greedy
tablets have pretty good recognition, but I want a mac tablet (inkwell is the newton recognition engine)
My first portable comp was a newton with a keyboard and modem
The only short comings for the newt were lack of software and the connection process was kind of clunky - ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It takes Flash memory YEARS to wear out. Modern Flash has what's called "write leveling" that splits up the writes across the whole device, so each individual piece gets worn out equally (and very slowly). Your basic consumer hard drive will fail before your flash wears out.
- combatchuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd rather see them release a reasonably priced minitower system. I don't need quad Xeon cores or FB-DIMM. I want a midrange Apple that doesn't include a screen, a single PCIe slot, enough room for 2 optical drives, and not priced over $1200. Apple makes some of the most stable and usable systems out there, but I think they are bilking their customers out of an extra $1200 with the Mac Pro.
- palmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Possibly it was a reference to its lack of a Delete key (as you probably know, that one labeled "Delete" is a Backspace key). And the lack of End, Page-Up/Down, Home could've factored in.
Sure, you can simulate some of these with modifier keys, but as usual, that takes two hands and is therefore awkward. - marksy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2those are speed holes
- bkorte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well if this happens, I think it would be a success - OS X would make a better tablet based OS than Windows.
- marksy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ Kazbaeden
yeah, but Inkwell is integrated, and has always been.. meaning you dont have to buy specialised software. You have to buy the tablet version of XP right? - phill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would love to have a Tablet Mac. Something like 8x11x.5 would be good.
