- timusca, on 11/06/2008, -0/+29You should have known better anyway.
- nshady, on 11/06/2008, -1/+18I wish he'd rung to tell me not to just buy two Mac minis.
- HonoredMule, on 11/06/2008, -1/+13Streaming media can't truly arrive until North America's network infrastructure exits the stone age for at least 80% of the population.
- Laxaloot, on 11/06/2008, -1/+13http://tinyurl.com/6p4e5d thats a fake, but shouldn't be.
- CoreyTamas, on 11/06/2008, -1/+13You are one bored little fella, aintchya?
- robotdestructo, on 11/06/2008, -4/+12***** off
- ironhide, on 11/06/2008, -3/+10I hope Apple does refresh the Mini - I don't use mine as my main system but it makes an excellent 2nd system.
- Zippo, on 11/06/2008, -9/+16Give me a Mac Mini with a Blu-Ray drive, the same graphics enhancements the Macbooks have seen, and 802.11n, and I'm sold.
I know Blu-Ray is a bit far away right now... I just hope that "big bag of hurt" becomes less painful really soon. - smacksaw, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5Didn't you hear? They gave away a Mac Mini in California with every "No on Prop 8" vote!
Moron. - chad78, on 11/06/2008, -0/+6Have you not been paying attention? Jobs said that BluRay was a "Bag of Hurt". BluRay is only for movies and PS3 games at this point. Apple sells HD movies via iTunes - BluRay would be competition. There's no motivation for Apple to use BluRay at all - much less in their lowest end model Mac. As people have pointed out - there's the cost factor to consider as well.
You want a BluRay player - buy a PS3. - MikeFromAmerica, on 11/06/2008, -0/+6Agreed. My porn collection is getting really ***** big.
- HarleyQuinn, on 11/06/2008, -1/+7As a serious HTPC Mac Mini user, I hope with the new mini we get:
FIREWIRE --- My Lacie Mini drives turn it into a Mac "medium".
Graphics that can handle 1080p
Processor power that can handle TV Capture and playback at the same time
Enhanced 5.1 output for AC3 (coming with new Quicktime 7.6 IIRC)
FrontRow enhancements (that let us bounce between Music & Photos & the Desktop without STOPPING the music, like earlier FR.)
Blue Ray option? (Dreaming)
eSata option? (Dreaming)
7200 RPM HDD's
Same form factor would be nice.
Keeping my fingers crossed. My 1.83 Core Duo can barely playback 720p.
Hey Apple how about just a "Mac" as an addition to the lineup. Something between the mini and iMac without a display? - anksrivastava, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5As you wish!
- mleh, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5We have a 1.66GHz Mac Mini serving as a media center with Plex. It cannot handle 1080p content right now, but I think the newer Core2Duo-based machines can.
There was another article on Digg about an at-home station that 'brewed' biofuel based on a number of ingredients that uses a MacMini as the brain behind the operation. - evilrobot, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5I hope this is true. My current G4 Mac Mini is WAY past its prime; but I love the form factor - I also am not going to buy one of the current lineup when I know it uses the same basic parts as thier MacBook line and the MacBooks have seen SO many refreshes and the mini has had none.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -1/+6I read your comment and thought it was a piece of ***** from my ass.
- puxxor, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5In case the Apple hardware design folks read this.... How about an eSata port so we can add our own 7,200 or 10,000 rpm hard drive?
- kefkaantakrist, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5I'd like to see burning BR drives, not so much for the movie playback, but more for the awesome backup potential.
- stukdog, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5Referenced in the article: State of the Mac mini at http://www.macminicolo.net/state2008.html
- MarkOfTheDead, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4***** that *****, my car can read a book if it's bored.
- digitalpencil, on 11/06/2008, -1/+5it's not really just that.. the cheapest slot-loading blu-ray drive is around $1000 pushing the cost of the mini through the roof.
802.11n, miniDP and the 9400m in the new MB are likely upgrades though. - ExSlashdotter, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4I can almost guarantee what it'll be. The current macbook nvidia motherboards in an updated chassis, with a slight price increase. More than likely sans firewire.
What i'd like it to be? If the mini was just a cube'd macbook that had two full 3.5" hard drives bays (and keep FW800), i'd be all over it. And the GPU must be able to support 2560x1600 (seriously, the bottom-end macbook does now). - markscott65, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4All I want is a Mac Mini that can go to 4GB of RAM, has at least a 200GB disk (7200rpm please) and a slightly faster CPU & GPU. The current form factor & pricing is fine... :-)
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4I gave up on Apple when Steve told us Blu-ray was a big bag of hurt. From there I knew Adobe was the way to go for editing and authoring, and since I own a Mac pro that runs windows, there is no need to worry about buying Apple gear anymore. I have switched back to PC with the MP and could give 2 ***** about Apple now.
They can promise or hint at new stuff all they want, it is just a smoke show. - digitalpencil, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4best media center ever..
- EvilJohn, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4Steve? is that you?
- gavroche, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3I've been waiting a long time to buy a Mac Mini, hopefully they will release a new one on January or sooner because I can't wait no more!
- abbathdoom, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3It wont be HDMI, it will be the same ports as found on the netbooks which Apple said was better than HDMI.
- mohrt, on 11/06/2008, -2/+5It probably won't have blu-ray. optical media is going away, streaming media is approaching full speed. If it helps sell more units for the short term then maybe, but I doubt it.
- clockdist, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3The MacMini is aimed at the low-end market. I think BluRay would make it too expensive.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3***** 30GB Portable Optical media? Srsly?
- zxcv12, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2I got a mini about six months ago. I have been very happy with it. I mainly use mine as a development box and it is ideal for that. Too many programmers think they need "pro" gear. Most don't. If you are a programmer who is looking to get into OS X, save yourself a few bucks and get a mini. After all, how many programmers don't have an unused monitor around?
- digitalpencil, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2same setup and yeh, the c2d handles 1080p rips fine. wireless n drops frames but ethernet works great. i've got mine running Plex, pulling media off a 4tb linux server i keep in the back.
they really are the best media center/car pcs available.. - Elranzer, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2I've never understood the need for a car to have a PC...
- digitalpencil, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2c2ds play 1080p rips fine and if you're a serious HTPC user, i'd throw Front Row out right now..
Plex/XBMC is the way to go, i've got mine pulling media off a 4TB server with in menu torrent searching and auto-torrent as standard. You can quite literally get everything bittorrent can offer automatically, correctly titled, with all artwork and without having to get off your couch and the menu system is infinitely better than FR. - MarkOfTheDead, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2Dual boot I hope.
Otherwise you dropped a nice chunk of cash on a ppc. - digitalpencil, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2^ plex/eyetv
- wwwluckyro, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2Way too expensive. For that many I can buy a refurb macbook or something. Still, nvidia graphics are expected.
I actualy hope they go back to the lower price. $500 - mohrt, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2I suppose it could be miniDP, although everyone will be needing miniDP-2-HDMI adapters to get it connected to their TV.
- peterinjapan, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2My Mac Mini has a 500 gb hard drive. Upgrades, man!
- agarc, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1I've been waiting 2 years for Apple to update the Mini. It needs more power!
- Nosyn, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1Because of a computer? I guess they were right about you Apple fan boys...
- anshuman, on 11/06/2008, -1/+2jesus christ... why so serious guys?
/iwaskidding - Elranzer, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1"it makes an excellent 2nd system."
I have DOS and Windows 3.1 installed on mine. - warragul, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1Look here:
http://www.erebos.net/articles/macmini_esata/macmi ... - SilverBlade2k, on 11/06/2008, -1/+2The Mac Mini has the potential to be such an awesome HTPC..but..
1) They need to include Blu-Ray playback.
2) They need to allow Front Row to play every file format under the sun, including DVD's and Blu-Rays.
3) They need to allow Front Row to use HD audio streams.
4) They need to put an HDMI port on it.
If the next Mac Mini has these, I'm instantly sold. - BigBroMario, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1I'm really hoping for an update before Christmas, I could use a Mac desktop to help take the load off my MacBook I use for school, but I don't want to pay for/can't afford an iMac.
Speaking of school, the Mini is pretty popular at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. A few quarters ago the tech department replaced all the PC's in the regular lecture rooms with dual-boot Minis, giving teachers more of a choice. - inactive, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1Yeah, why are slot load BD drives so damn much? I would love to put one in the iMac and Macbook, but they are so expensive compared to the LG one I bought for the Mac Pro.
- digitalpencil, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1blu-ray will come but not to the mini with slot-loading drives priced at $1000..
- digitalpencil, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1miniDP>HDMI
