Apple Takes the Mac Out of This Year’s Macworld Keynote
cavemonkey50.com — "Now that they keynote is over, I feel a little disappointed. Not one product I can run out and purchase today. Not one enhancement to Apple ’s software. Not one mention of Apple’s computers or next generation operating system, Leopard."

- philrenaud, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14There's a certain disappointment that we inevitably feel whenever we pay close enough attention to the major players in the high-tech market, I think. It's not too far off from the auto industry (the Detroit International auto show is going on right now, and regularly showcases more concept cars that will a) never be put onto the market, or b) not be on the market for half a decade or more).
The truth is this: it's for the shareholders, not the gadget/new tech fans. Want proof? Here's the chart of today's stock read on Apple, RIM, and Palm. Guess when the keynote took place: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?t=1d&s=AAPL&c=PALM&c=RIMM- RyAnderson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+52Obviously there will be another event concerning Mac hardware and software within the next few weeks. The iPhone noise would have drowned it if anything was released today.
- ckr4282, on 10/12/2007, -15/+13RyAnderson: you better make damn sure it happens or prepare to meet an angry mob of diggers in front of your house.
- drewpost, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19iLife 07? iWork 07?
- magicRob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19The iPhone is drowning out almost everything at CES... I was expecting some Leopard info, maybe some Mac stuff. Almost the entire 2 hours this morning was taken up by the iPhone. So I too can only assume once the iPhone talk has died down, there will be another announcement to keep Apple in the news.
Any other product announcements from Apple would have been drowned out in the iPhone media fest anyway... as always, Apple know how to manipulate the media to make sure it's used to full effect. I was going to order a MacBook today, but since there was no iLife/iWork/Leopard information today, I'll wait again for the next "special" press conference called by Steve... I can't see the point in buying a MacBook then finding out in a couple weeks time that I could get a "free" Leopard upgrade because Apple announced the release date... - jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -21/+4didums, poor little appleboys.
- PhireN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If there is another event, I guess there will be a high chance of a wide screen video ipod.
Apple already has the technology, and its a very similar product, so apple wouldn't want to release both of them at the same time. - clickmyface, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Well, perhaps it would be wise to stop and think about why Apple didn't release anything about Leopard or any other products.
What's coming deserves a keynote all on it's own, once it's ready to intro. The iPhone was the biggest non-secret secret at Apple. OS related stuff is still the big secret. See you soon, as Steve said. - Ivand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5lets just wait for "One more thing..."
- Phatt138, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1jrbrewin - Hey, you're in the thread too. Or did you come here just to say that? Your momma must be so proud.
As for there being 'not one enhancement' and not one product to 'run out and purchase...'
(Pre)orders for iT...I mean, AppleTV started yesterday. You can spend the money right this second, if you wish. And Leopard's still being pounded away on in the background. Aside from Ry's thoughtful comment about the iPhone fervor, recall that they've already shown us most of what they're willing to with Leopard. It's not due out for months and months, so I would be a little surprised if (even though Vista's been released now) they were like, "Okay, cat's (erm...seriously, no pun intended) out of the bag!" Unless you want to see some new icons and a tentative screensaver or two, you really shouldn't be waiting for too much more Leopard news until closer to the release.
Anyway, the patents and technologies included in the iPhone have enough meaning for the Mac line as a whole that you should be excited. Since they've already got multi-finger support on the MBP's and more recent PowerBooks (though maybe not as advanced as those on the iPhone), I wouldn't be surprised if technologies like 'pinching' found their way into other applications... - Raian, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2We're annoucning 3 new products: iLife '07, iWork 07, and Mac OS X: leopard.... which have all been bundled into ONE APP! It's called (Apple)Tax... and it's the perfect compliment to your $299 (Apple)TV, and your $599 iPhone!
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28Keynote is over, not macworld.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And the title of the story is "Apple takes the Mac out of this year's Macworld _Keynote_" ...
- oskite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1'It's Showtime' was pretty recently. I'm expecting Leopard come along soon. They'd never wait until WWDC (they damn well better not), so it'll no doubt have a special event keynote to go with it.
As for computers, they've almost completely changed the line-up in the past year. I'm not expecting any more drastic changes, such as a new model, for the first half of this year. - megagram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19They took the whole damn Computer out... Apple, Inc.
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4that surprised me a lot.
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Didn't surprise me. Makes a lot more sense. It certainly is more representative of their product line-up.
- gravity242, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Yep, Apple is mostly just a DRM'd content delivery & cell phone company these days. I would expect Apple to drop support for the OS soon as it doesn't make them very much money and isn't all that popular in the marketplace.
(heheheh)
- DonWilson, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Are we at the 50 apple stories a minute threshold yet?
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9To be fair, I think the iPhone is the next Mac. Not for everybody, but think about what the average person does on a computer. They manage photos, write email, chat, play music and watch movies. That's about it. Guess what? The iPhone can do all that, and you can carry it with you everywhere. Why would a lot of people even need a computer anymore? Now there are still quite a few Pro users and gamers out there that this would never work for, and that's fine, the PC will stick around for them. But for the average user, I think this is the future. This is getting pretty close to Apple's old knowledge navigator.
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5it just doesn't work like that.
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"it just doesn't work like that."
Why? - sparkalex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Some thoughts for iPhone version 2 aka the new hand held Mac
- 40GB/60GB HD
- 5 Mega Pixel Camera + Photocasts
- Mobile iTunes with iTMS / Podcasts / Radio / etc (bottom line: move away from the iTunes mother ship)
- Apple tv can sync and stream from it
- Video capture with basic iMove editing
- iChat AV!!
- Terminal :) - colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5(Also, when I say PC's will stick around, I mean it in the "Personal Computer" way. Apple won't ever fully ditch the Mac as it stands. I didn't mean to say only Wintel PC's will be around.)
- vi0cs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Good point to be honest.... I am currently working retail till I find a new job with me just out of college... Most poeple come in looking for...
I want a computer that can do just music, photos, get on the net... nothing to big for fancy.... I think when this thing hits.. That's is what I am going to do is sell these things a replacement for laptops if that is waht someone wants it for... Wouldn't be surprised in later gens with the dock you can go out too... A monitor/keyboard etc etc etc....
BEHOLD THE FUTURE! - wush, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4so can an existing PDA
- wangeyes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@wush But can I 'touch my music' on a PDA ?
/me prepares to hear that phrase a lot - unit101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ wush
It's not just what the iPhone does that sets it apart from run-of-the-mill pda's and smartphones, its HOW it does it. It's the user experience that makes it stand out and judging from the keynote video and other reports, this is an amazing device, years ahead of its time.
@ colincornaby
I somewhat agree with the idea that the iPhone could eventually be used as a PC replacement, although I don't think that will truly happen on a mass scale. I know of at least one or two people who could use that thing and rarely ever need a conventional PC again. But I don't think that's the direction Apple will go with this device. - OMGWTFROFLMAO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Sure, and the PS3 is a PC replacement too. Stop buying into the hype.
It's a trendy smartphone with a touchscreen interface. The fact that it runs osx doesn't mean much other than it will be a bit easier for current developers to port their current products to a scaled down version for the phone. It is still a smartphone. It will not perform as well as a PC. It will not be as functional as a PC. It will not be as cheap as a PC. If you believe that it will, sell your PC and have fun typing up your resume or a 10 paged document using the tiny touch screen interface.
- jiub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think it just shows the new direction apple is taking.
Instead of a "computer" company they have effectively rebranded themselves as an entertainment technology company- dooraque, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Bye bye Macintosh. Say hello to DRM ***** dongles like iPod and Apple TV
- Subtonic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Apple sells COMPUTERS?!
- DevilDunkard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24People have P.M.D (Post MacWorld Depression). They will wear black turtlenecks and cry for a while. Its OK, were here to help.
- scottschiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In related news, local Starbucks across the US today were complaining of a high volume of prank calls - they reported people were calling in, ordering 4000 coffees to go, saying "Just kidding, wrong number, bye!", and hanging up..
- martinnguyen90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Well, I wasn’t the least bit disappointed by the keynote content. Jobs confirmed the existance of products which were shroaded in rumour. Leopard, iLife and iWork revisions are pretty much given.
- InannaMe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Cingular owns AT&T and I think he was assuring current AT&T customers that they can get this phone, which is amazing because as a former AT&T customer, I had to "upgrade" to Cingular just to get a new phone after I lost mine. There were no new phones being made for AT&T. There's a brisk business on eBay and Craigslist on used AT&T phones because of this.
(oops, I replied to the wrong one, sorry, I was replying to Wolvin)

- wolvin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I smell something funny with the way the Cingular Speaker kept eluding to AT&T and the partnership plugs.
How long till it's an AT&T and Apple, Inc. deal
And I hope that my current phone will last me till then, and what will the expected user's end of life anticipated to be, (average time a specific phone will last on the market place, before common errors take place , battery needs to be replace for the second time, no real physical or water damage and the phone white screens or will freeze too often.)
How long until a UMTS G3 version will be available.
One last thought, is this a hint at the next generation of ipods?- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wouldn't it be cool if the next generation of iPods had no scroll wheel, and had the iPhone touch-screen/wide screen interface? I had thought that the iPod form factor had reached equilibrium. How awesome it would be if this new form factor swept the iPod line.
I suspect that Apple will not do this though; the appeal of the iPhone is the new interface, and iPods that also have that would remove the impetus to buy their phone, and what Apple really wants is for you to buy their phone so Apple can become a major player in the mobile phone market. I suspect a lot of people, though they like the iPhone, are not quite ready to switch to Cingular from another provider, and that if they could get the slick widescreen iPod by itself, they'd settle for their current not-so-smart and rather lame phone. The iPod can stand to not be upgraded for a while. I'd rather that Apple upgrade the iPod to the new coolness, but I think they're going to ride the iPod's momentum for a bit while they push this new phone. - r00ts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Apple really wanted to be a major player in the cell phone market, then why would they lock their phone to only work on one GSM network?

- imyayo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I think the iPhone should have been left for "One more thing...". That way, at MacWorld everyone would of been disappointed with it not being released, then announcing the iPhone after would of made everyone even crazier for it.
Just my 2 cents.- HUKI365, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2My 2 cents is that the IPod only widescreen touch-screen device will be the "one more thing". Perhaps with Wifi and a chat interface.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Two hours were scheduled for the keynote. I think if Steve Jobs had pretended to end the Keynote after 20 minutes, just to pull off the "one more thing" that soon into the presentation, it would have been too predictable, and kinda lame, since he spent over an hour and a half on the iPhone part of the presentation. And if he had presented two hours of stuff, and kept people there another hour, it would be overkill. He's spreading out his goods. Apple's stock went up 8% today; if he drip-feeds us surprises, I suppose the stock price will make additional jumps at each announcement, where as dumping the announcements all at once would waste some of that.
Steve Jobs thrives on secrecy and being unpredictable. (Except for how he dresses.) Not doing the "one more thing" is just part of that. Everyone was anticipating the phone, but nobody knew it would be quite what he presented. - michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1So Apple DID release a tablet computer.
- iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Yes. As I said here: http://digg.com/apple/Keynote_is_over_iPhone_No_new_Mac_Leopard_presentation_iSuite
It is funny to see that diggers care to digg just some specific sources.- Koopa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Congrats, you posted a link to the apple website. Why the hell would I want to digg that up?
- rasice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not to mention a ***** title.
- rasice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4
.
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Face it, it was a very long show, and the two star products were very fun demos to watch. You wanted another hour at the end to do a walk through Leopard, and then showing and announcing iLife, and iWork -- it's just too damn much. He didn't even mention Airport Extreme going to 802.11n.
The other thing is, you could see very clearly that this was Jobs' pride and joy, and he was going to show off every part of it.
The world is interested in this, thanks to Jobs' presentation skills, and of course, to an incredible product. - animex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There's a reason they took the word "Computers" out of the company's name. Welcome to Apple Inc... the new Sony. The iPhone however truly deserved the time it got... its a totally revolutionary product.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Agree. But this article overlooks something.
If the iPhone performs as projected, MacOS X's market share will increase dramatically (even if it is a stripped down version of MacOS X). If 1% of the mobile phone market is 10 million units, and the iPhone achieves that, that's a greater increase in MacOS X users than this past record quarter, where Apple sold over a million Macs. If you think the "iPod halo effect" propelled the increase in the Mac's market share, just imagine the "halo effect" of 10 million iPhones running a miniature version of OS X. The Mac's market share would grow beyond anything we've seen yet. Imagine the Mac achieving 10-15% market share in the span of a year or two. The iPhone may not be the core product of Apple right now, but it may end up benefiting the Mac platform far more than the incremental upgrades to the OS that the author of this article wished Jobs had spent more time on.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Agree. But this article overlooks something.
- Devilboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think I'll probably wait for the iPhone mini or the iPhone nano...
- wangeyes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26Don't forget the iPhone shuffle. Who knows who it will call next!
- KielEWyote, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't know what he's complaining for. Apple has officially dropped "Computer" from their name, which means that they are going to focus not only on computers, but consumer electronics. While the Mac is still an important part of Apple's business, they are venturing out into other areas. So expect Macworld keynotes to change in the future.
- skoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm gona medidate until they update iLife.
- franklinbluth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The iPhone is only the beginning. We all know that. It's the 10th day of 2007, and Apple has hit a home run (concept wise). Ten days in and we expect Apple to pull out all the stops and dazzle us with all of the tricks? Nope. We have the rest of 2007 to soak up Leopard, the updates to iLife/iWork, and the (inevitable) widescreen touchscreen ipod. Not to mention the rumored MacbookPro-Thin (which I am eyeing as my entry into the Mac world). After seeing the iPhone, any iPod less than a widescreen/touchscreen one would be utter disappointment. Here's hoping to a 30gb iPod and a 100gb iPod! Apparently 30 years really is only the beginning.
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you just mentioned all the reasons why I bought Apple stock the day before Macworld.
- hyperden, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Get over it...
- berkeleyblue, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Both iPhone and AppleTV should have been in CES.
Mac stuff should have been in MacWorld. There are a lot of great products by some great companies that could have been featured, but they sadly were not.
Is the Mac computer dying? It sure seems to be much lower on the priority list. Steve Jobs even announced that they were taking "computer" out of their company's name. I might be forced to take a closer look at Vista.- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9" I might be forced to take a closer look at Vista."
let us know how that works out for you. - berkeleyblue, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0That will probably work out horribly, but if Apple phases itself out of the computer business.... I didn't mean my comment as a threat, but more as a fear of what the future will be.
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9" I might be forced to take a closer look at Vista."
- firsttube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3digg: All Apple iPhone, all the time!
- samuelcotterall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Now that they keynote is over, I feel a little disappointed. Not one product I can run out and purchase today."
That's the sort of statement that gives Apple users a bad name. Is this guy going to let Apple tell him what he needs in his life? Buying Apple products for the sake of buying Apple products - to be able to tell other people you own them.- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So wait, let me see: Loving everything Apple does unconditionally gives Apple users a bad name (i.e. fanboyism), and now being somewhat disappointed by what Apple does also gives Apple users a bad name? Hmm...
I can't see what's wrong with being disappointed with the lack of Mac stuff at the keynote, I was too. I was also blown away by the iPhone, but it doesn't mean I can't be a little disappointed not to get a Leopard preview or any news on iLife or any Mac hardware.
Or does anything Apple users do give us a "bad name"? - samuelcotterall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am an Apple user. An avid Apple user for that matter.
The idea of watching the keynote with your credit card in your hand is ridiculous. A vulgar display of consumerism.
I can understand being disappointed if you really needed a faster Mac Pro, or you needed the form factor of the 12" PowerBook in a MacBook Pro. Other than that you'd be looking for an excuse to spend money.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So wait, let me see: Loving everything Apple does unconditionally gives Apple users a bad name (i.e. fanboyism), and now being somewhat disappointed by what Apple does also gives Apple users a bad name? Hmm...
- Tattor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They played it perfectly the iPhone alone would have been enough for the Keynote.
- SpazticChips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1June.
- roberto_deneero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Dude, relax. Don't rule out Steve's media tricks just yet. There's still plenty of oppty a couple of weeks after Macworld to keep the buzz going, like a special media event. The iPhone is way more groundbreaking than Leopard will be. Who cares if I can scroll through my backups in space? Ooooooh. This phone will do unexplainable amount of drive for the mobile phone market. Have you seen the pics of the Japanese staring at this phone like it's from outter space?? Dude, when the Japanese envy a tech product from America, you know we're doing something right! Those smarty pants over there are generally light years ahead of us. It's about time we get with the program!
Anything in addition to the iPhone would have been too much for the keynote!
Leopard, new Mac models, etc. will all arrive soon enough. Don't get your panties in a twist! ;) - DocDEB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The first thing I look at when I buy a phone/provider is the coverage. Will I be able to use my new wiz-bang tech in the areas I know I will be? Cingular just doesn't give me the coverage. Sadly no iPhone for me.
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1awwww, a tear.
go buy the new Airport Express. - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was also disappointed that a 'MacWorld' Keynote wasn't really Mac-centric, but I also appreciate the significance of what WAS discussed at that Keynote, and why it needed the Keynote to itself.
However lets face it, what else was rumored? Things like a 8-core Mac Pro have, however much you might all want one, a very limited market audience. CPU speed-bumps are boring and run-of-the-mill, and rumored new software releases are unlikely to bring anything earth-shatteringly new. These can be done later, when everyone is looking at Apple.com.
The Keynote is what the very best Apple Keynotes always have been. It was BIG news that EVERYONE was interested in, delivered in that typical sensational media-frenzy way that Apple and Steve Jobs are so good at delivering.- Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An 8-core mac pro is logical progression. The quad-core processors are out and it's just a little bit of time til they put it on there. Just like the C2D, why wouldn't they use them?
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Apple took the "Mac", and also the "computer", out of Macworld. Apple Inc, makers of fine consumer products.
I think they should go all the way and make Leopard a Mac/PC release (ok, PCwithApplelogo/Generic PC release). People would still buy "Apple Computers" for the coolness factor (same way people buy Alienware computers). But you could go to the store next month, and either buy Vista or OSX, which would you buy? IMO Apple's market share would jump exponentially - everyone would want the OS to go with the phone to go with the iPod to go with the TV to go with the vacuum cleaner to go with etc etc- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Keep on wishing, its not going to happen any time soon.
- Sentinel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I totally agree. I felt very disappointed, as I have no interest in the iPhone.
- tyme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Not one product I can run out and purchase today."
Hmmm....you can already get the AppleTV, at the very least online, and probably in stores as soon as the shipments get in. - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1BUT THEY HAVE WIDESCREEN IPODS NOW ZOMG!!!!
- gravity242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ZOMG TORRENT PLS!!11!
- nufoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love what Apple is doing Product release wise ...every month or so the bring a new product to the market there by keeping there customers happy ..I remember a while back when Apple would only release at mac world and you had to wait till the next one [6 months] that seemed like a long wait for new products! this way Apple max's out the media so they can focus on the new product without losing to a another.
I just hope they release some more Machines perhaps a single processor Mac Pro or a Quad-Quad with SLI!!!! - skymt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AppleWorld Expo, anyone? ;-)
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who had expectations?
- Talguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought the keynote was fine. I really wasn't expecting anything about and new computer or computer upgrades on their behalf. I kind of thought that they would have announced the rumored new displays with the built in isight cameras. I also didn't expect them to announce the iphone yesterday and they only spent a little time on the apple tv because at the last conference they help for the new ipods they had a good 20min preview of it and it is not a really complex machine like a regular computer is or the iphone. They spent so much time on the iphone bc it is the first of its kind for the company.
well that is my two cents - peter303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple also took the word "computer" out of their company name this year too.
Coincidence?
Press said it was Apple is more than a computer company.
I think the settlement with Apple Music, Ltd (Beatles) might have
something to do with it too.
