- RyAnderson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+52Obviously there will be another event concerning Mac hardware and software within the next few weeks. The iPhone noise would have drowned it if anything was released today.
- wangeyes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26Don't forget the iPhone shuffle. Who knows who it will call next!
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28Keynote is over, not macworld.
- DevilDunkard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24People have P.M.D (Post MacWorld Depression). They will wear black turtlenecks and cry for a while. Its OK, were here to help.
- megagram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19They took the whole damn Computer out... Apple, Inc.
- magicRob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19The iPhone is drowning out almost everything at CES... I was expecting some Leopard info, maybe some Mac stuff. Almost the entire 2 hours this morning was taken up by the iPhone. So I too can only assume once the iPhone talk has died down, there will be another announcement to keep Apple in the news.
Any other product announcements from Apple would have been drowned out in the iPhone media fest anyway... as always, Apple know how to manipulate the media to make sure it's used to full effect. I was going to order a MacBook today, but since there was no iLife/iWork/Leopard information today, I'll wait again for the next "special" press conference called by Steve... I can't see the point in buying a MacBook then finding out in a couple weeks time that I could get a "free" Leopard upgrade because Apple announced the release date... - drewpost, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19iLife 07? iWork 07?
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Face it, it was a very long show, and the two star products were very fun demos to watch. You wanted another hour at the end to do a walk through Leopard, and then showing and announcing iLife, and iWork -- it's just too damn much. He didn't even mention Airport Extreme going to 802.11n.
The other thing is, you could see very clearly that this was Jobs' pride and joy, and he was going to show off every part of it.
The world is interested in this, thanks to Jobs' presentation skills, and of course, to an incredible product. - michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9" I might be forced to take a closer look at Vista."
let us know how that works out for you. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Sure, and the PS3 is a PC replacement too. Stop buying into the hype.
It's a trendy smartphone with a touchscreen interface. The fact that it runs osx doesn't mean much other than it will be a bit easier for current developers to port their current products to a scaled down version for the phone. It is still a smartphone. It will not perform as well as a PC. It will not be as functional as a PC. It will not be as cheap as a PC. If you believe that it will, sell your PC and have fun typing up your resume or a 10 paged document using the tiny touch screen interface. - roberto_deneero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Dude, relax. Don't rule out Steve's media tricks just yet. There's still plenty of oppty a couple of weeks after Macworld to keep the buzz going, like a special media event. The iPhone is way more groundbreaking than Leopard will be. Who cares if I can scroll through my backups in space? Ooooooh. This phone will do unexplainable amount of drive for the mobile phone market. Have you seen the pics of the Japanese staring at this phone like it's from outter space?? Dude, when the Japanese envy a tech product from America, you know we're doing something right! Those smarty pants over there are generally light years ahead of us. It's about time we get with the program!
Anything in addition to the iPhone would have been too much for the keynote!
Leopard, new Mac models, etc. will all arrive soon enough. Don't get your panties in a twist! ;) - martinnguyen90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Well, I wasn’t the least bit disappointed by the keynote content. Jobs confirmed the existance of products which were shroaded in rumour. Leopard, iLife and iWork revisions are pretty much given.
- vi0cs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Good point to be honest.... I am currently working retail till I find a new job with me just out of college... Most poeple come in looking for...
I want a computer that can do just music, photos, get on the net... nothing to big for fancy.... I think when this thing hits.. That's is what I am going to do is sell these things a replacement for laptops if that is waht someone wants it for... Wouldn't be surprised in later gens with the dock you can go out too... A monitor/keyboard etc etc etc....
BEHOLD THE FUTURE! - colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"it just doesn't work like that."
Why? - timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5But you can't actually pick one up, which was the point of the article. And Apple always delays on ordering things. Don't be surprised if "February" for Apple TV really means February 28 :P
- Ivand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5lets just wait for "One more thing..."
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5(Also, when I say PC's will stick around, I mean it in the "Personal Computer" way. Apple won't ever fully ditch the Mac as it stands. I didn't mean to say only Wintel PC's will be around.)
- philrenaud, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14There's a certain disappointment that we inevitably feel whenever we pay close enough attention to the major players in the high-tech market, I think. It's not too far off from the auto industry (the Detroit International auto show is going on right now, and regularly showcases more concept cars that will a) never be put onto the market, or b) not be on the market for half a decade or more).
The truth is this: it's for the shareholders, not the gadget/new tech fans. Want proof? Here's the chart of today's stock read on Apple, RIM, and Palm. Guess when the keynote took place: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?t=1d&s=AAPL&c=PALM&c=RIMM - animex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There's a reason they took the word "Computers" out of the company's name. Welcome to Apple Inc... the new Sony. The iPhone however truly deserved the time it got... its a totally revolutionary product.
- Koopa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Congrats, you posted a link to the apple website. Why the hell would I want to digg that up?
- wangeyes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@wush But can I 'touch my music' on a PDA ?
/me prepares to hear that phrase a lot - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Didn't surprise me. Makes a lot more sense. It certainly is more representative of their product line-up.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Agree. But this article overlooks something.
If the iPhone performs as projected, MacOS X's market share will increase dramatically (even if it is a stripped down version of MacOS X). If 1% of the mobile phone market is 10 million units, and the iPhone achieves that, that's a greater increase in MacOS X users than this past record quarter, where Apple sold over a million Macs. If you think the "iPod halo effect" propelled the increase in the Mac's market share, just imagine the "halo effect" of 10 million iPhones running a miniature version of OS X. The Mac's market share would grow beyond anything we've seen yet. Imagine the Mac achieving 10-15% market share in the span of a year or two. The iPhone may not be the core product of Apple right now, but it may end up benefiting the Mac platform far more than the incremental upgrades to the OS that the author of this article wished Jobs had spent more time on. - firsttube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3digg: All Apple iPhone, all the time!
- jiub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think it just shows the new direction apple is taking.
Instead of a "computer" company they have effectively rebranded themselves as an entertainment technology company - KielEWyote, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't know what he's complaining for. Apple has officially dropped "Computer" from their name, which means that they are going to focus not only on computers, but consumer electronics. While the Mac is still an important part of Apple's business, they are venturing out into other areas. So expect Macworld keynotes to change in the future.
- wush, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4so can an existing PDA
- DIGGerPhelpsND, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5And Apple TV as well
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Two hours were scheduled for the keynote. I think if Steve Jobs had pretended to end the Keynote after 20 minutes, just to pull off the "one more thing" that soon into the presentation, it would have been too predictable, and kinda lame, since he spent over an hour and a half on the iPhone part of the presentation. And if he had presented two hours of stuff, and kept people there another hour, it would be overkill. He's spreading out his goods. Apple's stock went up 8% today; if he drip-feeds us surprises, I suppose the stock price will make additional jumps at each announcement, where as dumping the announcements all at once would waste some of that.
Steve Jobs thrives on secrecy and being unpredictable. (Except for how he dresses.) Not doing the "one more thing" is just part of that. Everyone was anticipating the phone, but nobody knew it would be quite what he presented. - scottschiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In related news, local Starbucks across the US today were complaining of a high volume of prank calls - they reported people were calling in, ordering 4000 coffees to go, saying "Just kidding, wrong number, bye!", and hanging up..
- rasice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not to mention a ***** title.
- rasice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4
. - DocDEB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The first thing I look at when I buy a phone/provider is the coverage. Will I be able to use my new wiz-bang tech in the areas I know I will be? Cingular just doesn't give me the coverage. Sadly no iPhone for me.
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was also disappointed that a 'MacWorld' Keynote wasn't really Mac-centric, but I also appreciate the significance of what WAS discussed at that Keynote, and why it needed the Keynote to itself.
However lets face it, what else was rumored? Things like a 8-core Mac Pro have, however much you might all want one, a very limited market audience. CPU speed-bumps are boring and run-of-the-mill, and rumored new software releases are unlikely to bring anything earth-shatteringly new. These can be done later, when everyone is looking at Apple.com.
The Keynote is what the very best Apple Keynotes always have been. It was BIG news that EVERYONE was interested in, delivered in that typical sensational media-frenzy way that Apple and Steve Jobs are so good at delivering. - franklinbluth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The iPhone is only the beginning. We all know that. It's the 10th day of 2007, and Apple has hit a home run (concept wise). Ten days in and we expect Apple to pull out all the stops and dazzle us with all of the tricks? Nope. We have the rest of 2007 to soak up Leopard, the updates to iLife/iWork, and the (inevitable) widescreen touchscreen ipod. Not to mention the rumored MacbookPro-Thin (which I am eyeing as my entry into the Mac world). After seeing the iPhone, any iPod less than a widescreen/touchscreen one would be utter disappointment. Here's hoping to a 30gb iPod and a 100gb iPod! Apparently 30 years really is only the beginning.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wouldn't it be cool if the next generation of iPods had no scroll wheel, and had the iPhone touch-screen/wide screen interface? I had thought that the iPod form factor had reached equilibrium. How awesome it would be if this new form factor swept the iPod line.
I suspect that Apple will not do this though; the appeal of the iPhone is the new interface, and iPods that also have that would remove the impetus to buy their phone, and what Apple really wants is for you to buy their phone so Apple can become a major player in the mobile phone market. I suspect a lot of people, though they like the iPhone, are not quite ready to switch to Cingular from another provider, and that if they could get the slick widescreen iPod by itself, they'd settle for their current not-so-smart and rather lame phone. The iPod can stand to not be upgraded for a while. I'd rather that Apple upgrade the iPod to the new coolness, but I think they're going to ride the iPod's momentum for a bit while they push this new phone. - tyme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Not one product I can run out and purchase today."
Hmmm....you can already get the AppleTV, at the very least online, and probably in stores as soon as the shipments get in. - r00ts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Apple really wanted to be a major player in the cell phone market, then why would they lock their phone to only work on one GSM network?
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And the title of the story is "Apple takes the Mac out of this year's Macworld _Keynote_" ...
- Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An 8-core mac pro is logical progression. The quad-core processors are out and it's just a little bit of time til they put it on there. Just like the C2D, why wouldn't they use them?
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who had expectations?
- skymt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AppleWorld Expo, anyone? ;-)
- SpazticChips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1June.
- samuelcotterall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am an Apple user. An avid Apple user for that matter.
The idea of watching the keynote with your credit card in your hand is ridiculous. A vulgar display of consumerism.
I can understand being disappointed if you really needed a faster Mac Pro, or you needed the form factor of the 12" PowerBook in a MacBook Pro. Other than that you'd be looking for an excuse to spend money. - michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you just mentioned all the reasons why I bought Apple stock the day before Macworld.
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1awwww, a tear.
go buy the new Airport Express. - oskite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1'It's Showtime' was pretty recently. I'm expecting Leopard come along soon. They'd never wait until WWDC (they damn well better not), so it'll no doubt have a special event keynote to go with it.
As for computers, they've almost completely changed the line-up in the past year. I'm not expecting any more drastic changes, such as a new model, for the first half of this year. - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So wait, let me see: Loving everything Apple does unconditionally gives Apple users a bad name (i.e. fanboyism), and now being somewhat disappointed by what Apple does also gives Apple users a bad name? Hmm...
I can't see what's wrong with being disappointed with the lack of Mac stuff at the keynote, I was too. I was also blown away by the iPhone, but it doesn't mean I can't be a little disappointed not to get a Leopard preview or any news on iLife or any Mac hardware.
Or does anything Apple users do give us a "bad name"? - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Keep on wishing, its not going to happen any time soon.
