- OSJunky, on 11/14/2007, -5/+227That is the last product they'll make for Apple.
Rule number 1 about making products for Apple is you don't talk about making products for Apple. - highwebl, on 11/10/2007, -16/+133"Asus is Apple's contract manufacturer. It's one of the companies responsible for building the iBooks, PowerBooks and MacBooks of this world"
Who makes them on other worlds? - CraigJ, on 11/10/2007, -0/+94Funny, that's rule #2 as well...
- chrisutley, on 11/07/2007, -1/+69If somebody at Asus leaked this information, the streets of Cupertino will run red with the blood of Asus executives.
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -0/+40All it has to be is a GIANT iTouch with all the goodies
- rebotfc, on 11/07/2007, -4/+43Why bury him it's a valid question, Jobs himself hailed the finger as the best multi-touch tool when announcing the iphone, its not beyond the pale to consider this to be the default mode of the tablet.
That said for nearly every graphic professional a stylus/pen with pressure detection is essential and I would be extremely surprised if it was only finger controlled. - johnhummel, on 11/10/2007, -5/+42OK. Look, I've been hearing about the "Apple Tablet" for I don't know how many years now.
Personally, I'm treating this one like "Star Wars: Episode I". For years after Return of the Jedi, people kept saying "Hey, George Lucas is going to make movies 1, 2, and 3 in the Star Wars world!"
1985 came. Then 86. Then 1991. And every year, geeks would always tell me "I'm telling you, Lucas is working on the next Star Wars movies!" And I'd get my hopes up, and have them dashed.
Finally, I decided that until the day came that I could buy tickets to a new Star Wars movie, I would not believe that they existed. No heartbreak, and I could focus on the now instead of some mystical future.
I treat the Apple iTablet rumors the same way. We heard it was going to come - and it was the iPhone. We heard this was the year - and it was new Macbooks. So until Steve Jobs gets up and says "OK, this is it", I'm not going to listen to any more Apple Tablet rumors.
And even when Jobs does announce it, I'm still holding back until it's released - because God knows, the last thing I'd want is for a cool Apple product to turn out to the "Phantom Menance" of the tech world: an overhyped piece of suck. (Hey, don't get me wrong - I love my Powerbook and my iPods and iPhones - but I don't put stock in anything a company is announced to make until I get touch it for myself.) - streetstealth, on 11/09/2007, -1/+28"Apple Tablet PC is real, says Asus"
"Not anymore, says Apple" - Chirp08, on 11/10/2007, -0/+27This is a great way to lose a contract Asus..
- honus, on 11/10/2007, -2/+28This is two years slow for me. I adopted the tablet when I started school last year and it's come in pretty handy. If Apple had a tablet offering, I would've scooped it right quick at that time.
The article seems to express hope for the future of the tablet platform. It's a little naive to put that much faith in the actual tablet technology when offered by Apple. But that's the whole reality distortion effect of that logo.
Bill Gates has considered the tablet the future for a long time. And Vista, believe it or not, does a good job in making a tablet-driven future possible. Tablet functionality was tacked into XP and was really pretty junky, but in Vista it's a lot better integrated and actually makes some sense. - mmgrinberg, on 11/07/2007, -11/+35Will it use a stylus?
- OrangeTide, on 11/07/2007, -1/+24contracts can be terminated for reasons listed in the contract. If Apple has ASUS sign an NDA, which is almost certainly the case, then breaking the NDA is often a breach of contract. Depending on how the contract is setup. I would assume a place like Apple would give their NDA some teeth and allow them to fine or cancel contracts once it has been violated.
- tupperbacharach, on 11/07/2007, -3/+26Steve Jobs invents, designs, engineers and builds them by hand, just for you, in the reality distortion world.
- bigsteve, on 11/07/2007, -3/+23"I can have have it shipped to Nega-you on Earth minus one."
"Oh yea? how long will that take?"
"70 Million years." - zachblume, on 11/08/2007, -1/+21Integrated attachments to your hand that include touch&heat feeling
- bluepass, on 11/10/2007, -3/+22Who wants to bet it's going to be at least $2000?
- Chompy, on 11/07/2007, -0/+19That's certainly true, Apple has no other successful products.
- rudy23, on 11/08/2007, -1/+20and your seem to be a miserable jealous *****
- Twoodge, on 11/07/2007, -5/+23Ah, the epitome of wit... in your dream world.
See what I did there? - ejdunphy, on 11/10/2007, -10/+27its called modbook, not official but still cool if you're looking for a current alternative to mac/tablet

- davidrools, on 11/07/2007, -2/+19"Any company that can make a mobile phone with no buttons, no picture messaging, slow Web access and no video capture into the most desirable phone on the planet can easily make tablets popular." says it all
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -0/+15Apple don't have plants, their machines are built by Asus in big parts, but also Quanta / Honhai, Foxconn at some point in time...
- Chompy, on 11/07/2007, -1/+16Not for long.
- matriculated, on 11/10/2007, -0/+14Bye, bye, Asus. Didn't ATI get fired for leaking information before Apple?
- martyuiop, on 11/07/2007, -3/+15PC users have had a tablet that runs OSX for years?
- aznhomig, on 11/07/2007, -1/+13Either you're playing dumb or are naive that American companies like Apple or Dell actually MAKE THEIR OWN PRODUCTS.
It's been outsourced to the Chinese for a long time now, Apple included. - hordak, on 11/07/2007, -0/+11we were told in a very hushed manner: "Asus is helping Apple build a Tablet PC." ..................... Sheesh... guess who's not having lunch with Asus ever again.
- Flatlineskillz, on 11/07/2007, -1/+11Ever heard of fingerpainting? /sarcasam
- KSUdesigner, on 11/06/2007, -0/+9You know they make wireless keyboards, mice and internet these days, right? Besides, if you're going to use the thing at your desk that often, why would you buy a tablet instead of a laptop/desktop?
- mufasa, on 11/07/2007, -1/+10The Liandri Corporation.
- otatop, on 11/07/2007, -0/+9It's not that you're accurate, it's that they programmed it to know where you mean to press. Pretty impressive, really.
- dgp1, on 11/07/2007, -0/+8Um, NO. Taiwan (Republic of China or R.O.C.) is not part of the People's Republic of China (PRC or just "China").
Handy guide:
Oppressive "Communist" government, Agrarian and industrial society, population 694 Trillion, has no regard for human rights let alone quality control, likes "Simplified Chinese" characters and lead paint = PRC ("China").
Free democratic society, not affiliated with PRC, highly advanced technologically, population 23 million, located on an island, not known for human rights violations or shoddy workmanship, likes "Traditional Chinese" characters = Taiwan (R.O.C.)
Hope this clears that up.
Oh, and also there used to be Hong Kong which used to be a free and cool society when Britain still owned them, but they gave it back to the PRC in '99 or so. So HK's officially part of mainland China now. Probably kinda sucks for HK residents.
For the record, they used to make 12" PowerBooks in Taiwan until the 1.5GHz G4 model came out. It was made in mainland China. The build quality suffered noticeably. - lharrod, on 11/07/2007, -0/+8I get the feeling that rudy23 is a... how did he put it?... a "miserable jealous *****."
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -0/+8Now thats funny. :)
- themastersb, on 11/07/2007, -1/+9So that would explain why they have a couple of laptops that closely resemble Macbooks
- SimonGray, on 11/07/2007, -0/+8*Taiwanese (yes, let's make this political)
- Ireland, on 11/07/2007, -0/+8You can be sure if they are telling the truth, Apple told them to "start whispering".
- dudefaceguyman, on 11/07/2007, -0/+7Somewhere in an old abandoned Apple warehouse, Steve Jobs is aiming a revolver towards a kneeled down Asus representitive who's sobbing and claiming he didn't know it was wrong to divulge apple secrets.
Poor man. He's gonna eat some lead. *sigh* Just another day in the office for Mr. Jobs.. - MiltyKiss, on 11/07/2007, -0/+7Considering how he's at +5 diggs and you're at -2 diggs (as of this comment), I would say that you failed.
- bradleyland, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6The statement was rhetorical. You don't have to refute _every_ statement that points out the flaws of the iPhone.
- MacParrot, on 11/08/2007, -3/+9So in other words, just like every other PC built but with style. It's too bad you can't afford one with your paper route eh?
- koweja, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6Or, you know, they'll either just remake it or discontinue it and go about business as usual.
- joeyjojo402, on 11/07/2007, -4/+10Can we hold an intervention for all the people on DIGG that have ever used this comment? You guys really need to expand your mind and start getting more creative.
- sdubois92, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6Asus makes some of the best laptops on the market.

I LIKE COFFEE! - koweja, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6Don't know what's worse. Waiting 16 years (almost to the day) for episode 1, or episode 1 its self.
- osage, on 11/07/2007, -1/+6Stylus, who needs a stylus... the rest is history
