- OneManArmy, on 10/15/2007, -2/+73"apple tv to gain optical drive"
Introducing the new mac mini. - atbnet, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28I think Apple would make a killing if they added DVR function. Then it would be a true media center machine.
- thashiz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23You got your Mac Mini in my Apple TV..
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Uh...so Apple called AppleTV the DVD player of the 21st Century. "A DVD player for the Internet Age."
And now they are gonna put a DVD drive inside? :p - kingfoot, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15you got your Apple TV in my Mac Mini!
- sinnix, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14Looks at left hand, holding an AppleTV.
Looks at right hand, holding a MacMini.
Smashes both hands together, violently.
Voila, Intel Core 2 Duo, RAM, HD, Optical Drive, BT, Wireless Networking, DVI, maybe HDMI out, optical out.
Smaller form factor, evokes latest black and glass design motif.
There ya go. Sorry to ruin the surprise, - Bamborzled, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9They originally called the Apple TV the iTV, but they chnaged the name due to ITV being the name of a British television broadcaster.
- SuperJimmyJimbo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7....except they would loose iTunes TV Store profits for that segment of the market. Why would any AppleTV owner buy content from there if they could record it for free?
- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Completely agreed. Ars is linking to the MOSR site as their source for this story, and MOSR is known for being completely full of *****. Buried.
- gronne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You're comparing a $300 consumer device to a laptop costing over $1000. How does that make any sense?
- debuggercll, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Well, thank you Ireland.
I think it's going to rain somewhere on Tuesday. If it happens, it was my idea and god [sic] just saw this post and stole my idea. I'll be by on Wednesday to brag. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Wasn't this what Arstechnica (among others) told us Apple TV would include when it was first released? And I don't remember anyone calling it a "hobby" device, it was going to friggin' kill Tivo and all the other DVRs.
How about just not theorizing wildly about what Apple is going to do? I'm sure it's good business but it's just pointless. - lukebond007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4ROFL, completley agree also.
- knightboat, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8I'm not seeing the "lol" in that.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Thats fine and all, do you know where I can buy an apple stencil and some spray paint though?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Yeah, its been almost a year, switch to Vista home premium already!
- pcpimpster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hey guys, just buy a ***** 360 - Mix it with XP Media Center or Orb (installs on regular xp) which does a good job of streaming content from your PC. I prefer Orb because it streams divx without the need for a re-encode like the XP Media Center. This AppleTV looks like a complete close ended turd.
- NAOC, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I just want the damn thing to be more like a DVR downloading crap all the time is getting old.
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Why you're getting buried is beyond me. Windows Media Center on your PC + a Xbox 360 in your entertainment is the best Entertainment center experience you can get.
Bar none. Feature for feature. And the best value (by far). An Xbox 360 is cheaper than the AppleTV. - mrsteveman1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The art store...all the apple heads work there
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/10/2007, -10/+13Mac Rumors aren't really rumors. It's just some fanboy that says, "Hey, this is a neat idea I just came up with. Apple must be doing it for release on some date that I'll just pick out of a hat." Why do we only get this crap with Apple? BMW rumors — BMW to possibly unveil flying car, sometime maybe.
- kingfoot, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6haha, well i THINK that the "new" mac mini will be the appl TV with a Mac Mini built in.
- BrianPower, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Ha that's hilarious!! Ireland, you're a genius
- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Not going to happen. Apple is trying to play nice with content distributors, and the cable and satellite providers have the DVR market locked up...
- mabhatter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3it's a lacking feature for a media device. Ability to have both outputs working with a small screen for music and such instead of turning on the whole rig would be nice too. The biggest target for Apple TVs would be College students and apartment dwellers with little money to by 8 devices. Now that you can get a combo TV/computer monitor for < $500 and a nice stereo so you have a low budget dorm entertainment system and dual screen laptop.
If Apple is serious about this market they'll reintroduce the Hi-Fi but update it to feature-complete the Apple TV/Cinema display/macbook combo. Right now Hi-Fi just doesn't have the feature set as anything except expensive iPod speakers. It needs some kind of display, radio or airTunes support, and multiple inputs/outputs.. and hold the damn iPod INSIDE so you can carry it. - mrsteveman1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Vista media center IS awesome...have you even seen it before? It's one of the few things MS has ever gotten right.
- Wander2000, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Let's hope they don't pull a 1.1.1 and kill all the free 3rd party utilities that are available for it when they 'upgrade' it.
- ericxoxp, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Blu-Ray !
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Use the network Luke! Whatever device you put into the entertainment center isnt remotely capable of storing the average homes's media assets (think all your music, DVDs and soon HD-DVDs).
Trying to store all that data in a HD in your living room doesnt make any sense. Using standard data-storage hardware in your Home Server and streaming the content to any network connected device in the home _is a better solution_.
Microsoft has the right archetecture with Windows Media Center (on Vista or in the coming "Home Servers") and then having Windows Media Center extenders as the distributed clients.
Windows Mobile Phones are Windows Media Center Extenders (play your media from your Home Media Server over the cellular network), Xbox 360 is an extender, HP and LG have announced they will be putting Windows Media Center extenders into their flat screen TVs.
Run out of space? Drop in another big / cheap HD. And the data is available everywhere. A vastly superior system for this space. - johnhummel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Actually, I'd say this makes some sense based on the "nano" rumors. Throw out something that looks like a DVD player with a hard drive that runs OS X, and you've got a machine that can play DVD movies without any problem, or play MP4/MOV/iTunes content. Yeah, pretty much a Mac Mini, only without the rest of the operating system.
- mythicflux, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5A DVR free of subscriptions is the one thing I'm waiting for. It's ridiculous that that I can buy a VCR to record shows but noone makes a standalone DVR that doesn't require me to pay a monthly fee.
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2On Oct.23rrd, the Xbox 360 Core is replaced with the Xbox 360 Arcade bundle. The Arcade has HDMI, Memory Card, 5 Arcade games and a wireless controller. For $279 (though, I recommend getting a elite for $450)
The LIVE Marketplace is full of TV + Movies in HD. And Windows Media Center rocks (free Internet TV FTW). - CompTechNSX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3A standalone TiVo without subscription functions as well as a VCR does... the subscription just gives you the advanced database access to the Tribune guide data.
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2'The ITV trademark is owned by ITV Network Limited ("ITV Network"), a company controlled by Granada and Carlton '
Despite what many of its fanboys think, Apple doesn't have a trademark on the letter i - wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You do know that Steve Jobs is an executive with Disney / Pixar? JOBS sits on the board of one of the most zealous MPAA firms.
You guys crack me up. Apple is the _last_ place that you should be looking to deliver your MPAA/RIAA free future. - deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3If they're going to add an optical drive they might as well go ahead an put a CableCARD M slot in there too. With NBC leaving iTunes Apple needs to start looking at alternative ways for people to get content.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You mean Apple didn't sue the television station for retroactive trademark infringement? Out of character...
- colto, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Never say that again.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Doesnt the iTV only use a sub 1.5Ghz pre-conroe CPU?
- mrsteveman1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2He was making fun of the Apple because they highlighted the fact that discs are so 19th century, then (probably) will add a drive to it anyway because everyone has DVDs, and Apple refuses to let you rip them like they do CDs. (yes i know the difference, its irrelevant)
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Sorry, but as much as I agree with you with having the AppleTV as a client to a remote NAS, this just won't happen. Fans cried out about the 40 GB of space the original aTV had, so apple quickly released a 160 GB upgrade. They aren't going down any time soon...
- 3vno, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2so do you guys think it will be able to rip dvds? that would be cool. pointless but cool.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ars references Mac OS Rumors, which probably has the worst track record of any Mac rumor site. MOSR pulls stuff out of their ass and slaps it on their site. Ars should know better.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You're not seeing the lol because you take offense to things that make fun of Apple.
You're a moron. - neodorian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You're missing the point that these devices are designed to sell iTunes content. That is their massive cash cow and all of the shiny hardware is there solely to sell iTunes and get your library to be tied to iTunes.
- michaelb1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1PLEASE ADD DVR to Apple TV!
- happy2k, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4WHy not just get an XBOX 360 for much less and does a lot more including HDMI? Play games, music, video, pictures, TV with PVR, Internet Tv, Webguide (sling box like feature). Apple is rotten.
- ScottBookG4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If this is true, I will stop hesitating and buy one
- blatantninja, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's absolutely amazing that it took Apple this long to come up with something that a Modded XBox running XBox Media Center could do 3 years ago. That's not to say that Microsoft is any genius either. How the hell they didn't grasp what could be done with the XBox is beyond me. If I had been in charge, I would have been on the phone with the XBMC guys they day after they launched it trying to license it for a new version of the XBox that I'd charge $200 more for. Just amazing how slow and dumb companies can be.
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2it doesn't really matter, Apple would be best suited to decode the video with the GPU.
