- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -11/+91"its totally for the noobs"
Gee, it's a good thing there aren't any noobs out there that use computers. : rolls eyes :
Seriously, I'm tired of the elitist PC users. Anything Apple comes out with is always too easy to use, with not enough support for some niche technology, and you can't build the thing yourself. We get it. Apple doesn't build any computers for you. We know it won't let you use some piece of hardware only %5 of the computer market would ever care about. We know it won't run some game that only %1 of the computer market plays. Apple won't let you put your computer in some case a majority of people would find ugly. We got it. You can shut up about it now. The fact of the mater is the reasons you won't use an Apple don't matter for %95 of computer users.
Look, personally, I'm not sure about the Apple TV. I might be one of those people who will go with a Mini instead. But the thing is cheap and easy to set up. Cheaper than a Mini. For a large segment of the market, the "noobs" as you call them, it's probably going to be pretty popular. That doesn't mean it's a bad product. It's just not for you. - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -5/+50"Bob, we've got another lemming on the line"
"Well... *sigh* Is he gainfully employed?"
"He says that he is, something about being a 'blocker'. Said it was good work until the 'master' has to blow him up to finish the level."
"Salaried?"
"Yeah."
"Alright, give him a card - but DON'T offer the life insurance option" - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37digg =/= the real world. It's a great social news site for geeks and nerds, but let's face it people, we aren't the entirety of humanity.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23@ Cobr@
Have you used one or are you basing your statement on what you have seen? Also, regarding it being "the same as a mini", it is also less than 1/2 the price of a mini. For those of us who will never use it as a computer from their television, paying for a mini is worthless. - JPFitting, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Fee-based? No fee's except what you download/use on your computer. It's free.
- cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Apple TV has hype????
- joaob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17If I was to go strictly by what pops up on digg I woulda thought it would be a flop
- Capta1nA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11you don't have to use content bought from iTunes, but the videos have to be an iTunes-compatible format (.mov, .mp4, .m4v). iTunes will play every audio file that Quicktime can (.mp3, .mp4, .m4a, WAV, AIFF), but not for videos.
- bradtacs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You do not need to buy anything with DRM why don't people get that fact? You CAN buy itunes music and videos but it will play any Mpeg4 video and mp3 etc weather it comes from itunes or not.
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14@ collincornoby
NICE.
This article surprised me. I underestimated the number of people that want to view their iTunes media on their TV/Entertainment system.
This will be good for apple stock because I read somewhere the margins are pretty good on the AppleTV.
Plus these sales numbers will give Apple leverage when negotiating HD movie downloads.
Apple is on fire this year. - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8> "You know apple will include a DVR soon. Its inevitable."
Umm, no, actually. Why would they want to let you record your own shows for free when you can buy them off iTunes? It's a simple business decision. - TibarNapies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8And there is a handy, "Convert Selection For iPod" feature built into iTunes. Drag a clip into iTunes, right click and chose that option and iTunes will encode it to .m4v for you. Sure you aren't going to be able to drag in Divx or Xvid without first flipping them to a .mov, but like colincornaby put it (and I am so glad someone finally did), those are niche formats mainly used by we geeks and not 95% of consumers.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Wow, a lot of hate for a product none of you seem to want. I'm not planning on buying one since I don't watch a lot of TV, but why all the negativity? Geez, let people buy what they want. I don't complain about all the lemmings (your words) buying Windows. If MS had released this, some of you guys would declare it the second coming of Christ.
MS has Media Center. It can difficult to set up for those that aren't tech savvy. They also have the XBox option. Again, not as easy to set up for Ma and Pa Kettle. I haven't seen the set up procedures for the Apple TV, but if it lets people get more out of their TV zombie time and is easy to use, what's the beef?
Oh, forgot that Apple makes it and is therefore subject to criticism no matter how good or bad it is. - hbweb500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Isnt this a no brainer? A recently introduced product will receive a surge of traffic immediately after it is released, especially through pre-order. Just look at the gaming consoles.
- JPFitting, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16I would enjoy an Apple dominated living room rather than a Microsoft dominated living room. I have much respect for the 360; however, if your iPod, iTV, and iMac can all work together nicely compared to the horrible mismatch of the 360, Zune, and Vista...
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I bought 4 from Apple website.
1= 1st gen
1= Mini
1= Nano
1-30g video.
lots of people do. You get the student discount there. - TibarNapies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You don't need a house full of Apple computers to do that. You can do those same things with the PCs in your house. iTunes will share content between computers and the Apple TV regardless of whether or not you are on a PC or a Mac. Just go into iTunes and turn on the sharing feature. All I have are PCs at home and we share content all the time through that feature. Apple TV works with PC and Mac.
- jlettee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I have a good question for diggers. As you all may be aware (i hope), you can rip and store your music on iTunes. However, now that we have video iPods and the AppleTV, one can't help but ask, "shouldn't iTunes let you store your home DVDs as well?" I mean, why would I want to pay an additional 14.95 for a movie I already own, just to have it on my video iPod or Apple TV? Maybe I should contact Apple, inc. about this...
Ideas? - jeylux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i have nothing to be a fan boy of....
*sigh* - johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Hm - actually, this is a product I've been interested in. Oh, I know - "Just build a Myth TV!". And then try to explain to my wife/children how to use it.
The plan is to hook up a terabyte storage to the Mac Mini, dump all of the DVD's onto that, then stream it to the TV using the iTV. For that, the price is low enough, I don't have to worry about "How do I do X" - just show them the remote, wait until they go to bed, then finish watching "Starblazers". I showed the idea to my wife, and so far, she's good to go.
Will it be a big hit? Probably not - but for $300 it suits my needs perfectly. - TofuHsu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I really think that this is the first time ever that microsoft has apple beat. Xbox with Xbox Media Center has Apple TV beat hands down. Of course you would need to mod the xbox in order to run it, and maybe apple tv after a hack or two can actually do something I want.
- DooM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I've bought 3 from the Apple website.
- marco114, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11I bought an Apple TV but then cancelled my order after I found out how little it really does. It almost feels like an incomplete product. Very un-apple like. It would be "cooler" if it could record TV and also stream those recordings back to my Mac. Like the SlingBox for example. I really wanted to buy something like this, but it got me to thinking, I already pay the cable company enough money as it is. I don't need to spend more money on TV. Gimme a iPhone without the phone, and let me add apps to it.
- morgdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Idea: Handbrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/)
- JPFitting, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It would be being one of the newest products. I must say that I would purchase it if I had a house with multiple Apple computers in it. That way the family (if I had one) could access all of our pictures, movies, music, etc. in our living room.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9"I would enjoy an Apple dominated living room rather than a Microsoft dominated living room."
For christ's sake why do you even care? It's almost the textbook definition of a total corporate drone. People use Media Center, MythTV, and a few people will use AppleCoTV. Tra la la.
It's not as if it's you're TV... - kelly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I plan on using mine to watch video podcasts... as I'm sure will many other people.
- writerboyVSgod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6their. Also, you are a moron.
- chalkmaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've bought three iPods from the Apple website.......the reason? You get them engraved for FREE.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5b05q
Right, so here you are posting about niche products that only 5% use, but you don't care. (slaps head) Forgot that you must be one of those "special" anti-fanboys fanboys (/sarcasm) - DooM, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6To me just doing that is great - I can't watch shows on my mac unless there's someone in the room with me because my ADD is uncontrollable. If I'm in front of my TV I can just relax and watch, if I'm in front of my computer I'm off and surfing and missing most of what I'm trying to see.
Maybe I'm a niche market, but it works for my needs. - Sun.Surfin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Mac Mini - $600 low end
Apple TV - $300
Apple TV serves my needs, and when I get a mac, I want to go all out and pay for a decent one with nice specs. Why get something for $600 when it's only going to serve as a media center? That's the draw right there :) - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@bradtacs
SHHH! You're bumming flag's karma! - goodness0001, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Apple TV to me doesn't offer anything other than streaming of movies from another computer to your TV. Until it has PVR technology that can rival Tivo, then such a box is useless
- hexix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5cybermort:
I think that's a very good point. Apple TV has seemed (to me at least) to be a complete bomb among tech people. It got nearly completely buried under the news of the iPhone. The few articles that do talk about it seem to come to the conclusion that it is overpriced or under-powered.
Yet it apparently is selling well. So maybe the point is that it's not hype that's selling this product but rather functionality. This is something that people wanted to do but didn't want to pay for a complete computer (mac mini).
Of course locking users into media that can only be played with Apple products helps too. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4slove,
I won't disagree that an Xbox 360 set up as a media center would be a better buy. Plus it plays a lot of great games. Does it surprise you that as an accused Apple fanboy I would admit this?
Unlike flag and many of the Apple haters, I try to be honest with myself. However as a member of a "niche" platform (as diggers like to remind me so often), I have to wonder why this is such a big deal? Many times what people buy is a much a matter of perception.
Consumer A goes into a store wanting something to use to stream content. He sees the Xbox, but either out of ignorance or because he "perceives" it as being primarily a gaming console, doesn't consider it and buys an Apple TV or one of the countless MS based Media Centers. Why? Because he doesn't want a game console.
Consumer B goes into the store with the same idea. He knows about his choices because he's spent some time making observations and checking out the facts. He buys either an Xbox to mod as a MC or he buys MSMC or he buys an Apple TV. Why? Because he likes the looks of one over the other, or the ease of use of one over the other, or the cost of one over the other.
The point is that it's the consumer's perception of his needs over what might actually be a better fit.
I admittingly use and enjoy Apple computers and MP3 players. I prefer them over the competition. I don't have a problem with Windows (hell, I use it 8 hours a day at work) and anyone who uses it and prefers it over the Mac or Linux I say, good for you. Apple's products currently fit my home needs better in my opinion. Sooner or later, that might change and I'll buy something else. Anyone here is welcome to check my posts for anything negative I've said (that wasn't true) about MS and rub it in my face. - cosmo7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Yummy ***** flavored ipod."
flag, please stop revealing the Zune codenames. - SteveR4376, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This just goes to show you that Steve Jobs could bleach his next bowel movement white and sell it as the iTurd to apple fans.
- ChoadNamath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OMG U R A VISIONARY!!1!
- gardnmi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"If Apple were to convert 1 percent of those iPod owners to Apple TV owners, it would be a success. That would be a million units."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Speaking as an Xbox 360 owner and an Apple fan I would like to chime in. I think Microsoft has a great thing on their hands. The movies, while offering a limited library, offers most movies in HD while Apple doesn't (at least not yet). However, Apple allows you to begin viewing a movie while it's downloading (so I believe, I probably shouldn't have posted after all), while xbox marketplace makes you wait until the ENTIRE movie is downloaded. I downloaded Superman Returns in HD from XBL Marketplace last week and it literally took 8 hours. While I was pleased with the quality of the HD movie and the somewhat-convenience of it, I found myself really hoping Apple brings the full experience of true convenience to the consumer sitting on the couch wanting to watch a movie within an hour of purchasing it. If Apple doesn't let you even purchase content via the iTV then I'm sticking with my 360. Otheerwise, Apple will own my tv.
- biiscit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7The whole point of the post was arguing against a ___ dominated living room. Personally, I own and iPod and a macbook as my main laptop. But even so, I would not want to be in Apple's, or any other company's, deathgrip when it comes to their vision of the entertainment center. When a company assumes a lockdown, it will only be detrimental to the consumer.
- zang74, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't you ever give up, Flag? Way to totally ignore his point, in order to find anything to discredit it.
The original iPod sold for $399 and $499 for the 5 and 10 gig models respectively. 5 years later, and the prices are $249 and $349 for 30 and 80 gigs, respectively. They're better powered, have more features and are between 38% and 30% cheaper.
It's funny, you rant and rave so damn much against Apple. Ground yourself, man. Find something constructive to do. - dancpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2or you can get an MG-35 http://www.xpcgear.com/altechmg35.html for $120 and stick a 500GB HD into it for the same thing at less than half the cost.
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would wager $100 that a PVR is in the works. To me it seems to be a glaring ommission.
Any device that does what the AppleTV does NEEDS to have PVR. It will. - HarryGldfarb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well played meat, well played
- writerboyVSgod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Every other option, arguably with the exception of the 360, is difficult to set up and not very attractive. If you have a nice entertainment system set up, then adding a neat and tidy little AppleTV with no wires running to your computer (which in most cases is in another room), then $300 seems like a damn good price.
I always frightens me how win/lin people will settle for ugly, messy and difficult. Apple TV is just pretty, from the form to the UI... what ever functionality it lacks will be hacked by a 15 year old in Denmark within 48 hours of release, so you WILL be able to watch your DIVX/XVID or what have you. You know this. - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My extended family accounted for 8 iPods last christmas all of them purchased off the Apple website. If you ask me the best place to buy is as follows 1) Apple Store 2) Apple Website 3) Target, Amazon etc. 4) Best Buy and any other place that tries to sell you there version of an extended warranty.
- Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Macparrot
What about the 360 at the same price as the AppleTV. 360 media center features are pretty easy to set up. No mad skillz required. - kelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Im surprised anyone is asking about this. The reason for the lack of DVD writing of iTunes videos has to do with the outlets that own the media not made copyable in any way shape or form.
