- ventro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Also, someone should write a mod that will allow you to use your Wiimote pointer to navigate through the menus of AppleTV. I mean it's already been written for OSX, all that someone needs to do is port it.
- WolfDV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10thank you modding community.. . .
now just create a linux-based xbmc clone, that plays all 1080/720p high definition files with 5.1, and I'll buy an aTV in a heartbeat.
but seriously this thing could be my next media center, my network of XBMC xbox's is great (so far best homebrew period) but the lack of HD support is starting to be an issue with the advent of more HDTV's and HD content available.
I hope this device continues to prosper into the perfect media device (all formats perfect HD support !!) and successor of the current king . .XBMC - mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I would love to see XBMC decode H.264 HDTV in realtime. Untill then, we have Apple TV.
- ventro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wow, this is maturing so fast, so well. The second it can do 5.1 i'm buying one.
- stoppedcode12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'd also also love to see an xbox1 running OS X or windows flawlessly. Until then, we have AppleTV.
- glitch47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5 Installation
1. Copy ATVFiles.frappliance to this folder: /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/PlugIns on the Apple TV. You may want to create a symlink from there to some more convenient place.
2. Restart Finder. The command killall Finder will kill it, and it will be automatically restarted. - lofiboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Damn, I really want an AppleTV now. :(
- windminstrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can mount any sort network file system to the mount point and do it from there, no muss no fuss.
- SilverBlade2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As soon as there is an easy way to add this (without ripping apart the system) I'm all for it.
- ...---..., on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple is walking a fine line delineated by the MPAA and RIAA. They HAVE to employ DRM or else no movie company is going to allow Apple to sell their products - let alone sue Apple themselves. Remember the open letter from Steve? Also, the video quality of their video downloads on iTunes aren't great - they were initially in that format to be played on iPods. Maybe now they will put out a higher rez version as well? Time will tell. I'm sure Apple would love to incorporate a lot of higher end features and non DRM but their arms are tied behind their backs by the movie and recording secret police.

didnt you see the recent article? you can just install ful osx on it ;o) - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The AppleTV supports DRM free videos out of the box with no mods. (h264 MP4 format) You can rip your own stuff using free tools like ffmpegX or HandBreak.
- TheYoshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It can do 5.1, or rather it doesn't really need to do it. It has digital output, all it needs is the DTS or other surround stream to output via it's digital audio output to a receiver that can decode it. This is the exact same way dvd players and other devices that support it handle it.
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm so tempted to buy one now. Runs OS X, plays most video formats... damn this is lookin' cool!
Soon we'll be able to throw on Salling Clicker and a bluetooth dongle (or your own favorite remote control) with OS X and you'll have your own full media centre. - pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What do they mean by "plugin"? How do you install it?
- MitchCumstein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The problem with Apple's strategy is they're attempting to make their content work for portable devices and home theater systems. In the end you end up compromising for both: file sizes larger than required for iPod/iPhone and media quality incapable of getting the most out of modern home theater systems. I enjoy my iPod and Apple TV but I'm wondering how much longer Apple can sit on the size/quality fence.
- dreamcode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1found a new link on akwardtv.org http://apple.qj.net/ATVFiles-Apple-TV-plugin-for-playing-local-content-v0-1-0-/pg/49/aid/88084
- P5ycHo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll just wait for the Full/True HD version .....
- hadimirza, on 03/26/2008, -2/+2This made life a lot easier
- pasqualiej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea seems the original link got destroyed...... use above link.
- RoflMyWaffle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hopefully not april fools...
- dreamcode, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1was this a joke ? cos the link just shoots me back to digg.com
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is a case of the hackers doing wonderful things that the hardware company can't. Even though there is no compromise of the DRM of films bought at the Apple store, I think the studios would look unkindly if Apple had done this sort of thing. The iTunes videos look, well, pretty bad. They're not high enough res, and the artifacts, in the Apple store units I saw, are terrible. If you have only HDTV-style connectors, you have to provide Hi-Def. Now, with all the hacking going on, that's what the box will have: true hi-def, playing a variety of codecs, with no DRM.
I don't know, of course, why Apple brought out this so obviously unfinished product. But I suspect that they're wrestling with how to provide hi-res to the living room, and the 5.1 will come, too. (When did stereo get so outmoded, folks?) Bit Torrent, anyone? iTunes with peer-to-peer? Who knows what the engineers would do if the fatasses would just get out of the way. But I think Apple was counting on the hacking community doing its thing. We'll see. I sure hope they don't start unleashing Apple Legal on this. That would be a huge mistake. - Phssthpok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0@mastercheif
I would love to see XBMC decode H.264 HDTV in realtime.
Too bad Apple TV doesn't do it either. It maxes out at 720.
stoppedcode12
I'd also also love to see an xbox1 running OS X or windows flawlessly.
I guess you could run either on an Xbox. But why would you want to? I don't think the Apple will run either flawlessly. The point being is the XBMC is what this ATV borrowed from. Too bad Microsoft didn't see it as the innovation it was. The Apple TV is a response to Microsoft's Media Center. - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Sweet... Hopefully we can get network content working, seeing how little internal storage there is...
- SoxFanNH, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Thats the sad part, thats its so crippled to begin with...
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1*cliked wrong reply digg me down*
- tenfingas, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Apple TV... i guess its okay for for mainstream consumers. IMHO if people who bought an apple tv are taking time to mod and hack it for additional features, they should invest in an XBOX1. Apple can't beat my modded xbox1 running XBMC. Not even xbox 360... lol.
- dgblackout, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3of course?
- nakedfool, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6its getting more exciting by the day....
go apple tv...hooray
its not much money to pay
as yoda would say....more hacks we must prey... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2It's spelled "plug-in", not "plugin".
