- madgunde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Well, one slight correction for the title of this article, it works with standard DEFINITION TVs that have component video connections. Not sure if the term "standard TVs" is the best in this case. Every TV is a standard TV, isn't it? Aren't they all built to standards?
I just hope people won't read the headline and run out to buy an AppleTV without reading and understanding the caveat. - venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20What the hell does this article even have to do with the title? The article is "Happy 6th Birthday to Apple’s Mac OS X!". The article the title refers to is here: http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/13062/ (Same link as in the first comment). Someone needs to double-check their links before submitting a story.
- Vanadium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Also, while it does output 480i, the aspect ratio is still 16:9. This means that watching on a 4:3 TV will still cause the picture to be compressed.
- dkm201, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10My last TV had component and no 16x9.
- darksheer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18Valid point....save the $300 and put it towards an HDTV
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10...not only does the 4:3 set need component in, but it also seems to need some 16:9 mode as well (which some of the 4:3 SDTVs do have, not sure if they all do). Would be nice to see a list of which SDTVs are supported, I guess.
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That is pretty dumb, considering plenty of content from iTunes isn't 16*9
- darksheer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10My 32" Sony WEGA from 2001 has a 16x9 mode. I would guess that any with component inputs are going to have a 16x9 mode on them.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -21/+28It's a flop because people are not lined up in the rain to by one nor does anyone have a reason to get one.
The same "standards" mac fanatics use to denigrate products like Vista and Zune "3 days" after they were released.
A standard they apparently cant use on this product. What a surprise! - Motobike_man, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/13062/
- interrelate, on 10/12/2007, -12/+18What person with a standard TV will want to buy an Apple TV anyways? It is too expensive.
- Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Personally I think this is $150 too expensive, there's just not enough features and capabilities for the price.
- janeregained1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The article is really just a summary of this page: http://www.rogueamoeba.com/utm/posts/Article/appleTV-2007-03-22-21-30 .
The MacDailyNews article acknowledges this as the source. - Shatneresque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes, it's true a lot of 4:3 TVs with component in have a mode that will squeeze the image down to be displayed correctly, but there might still be a few that do not.
Also, the point remains that the AppleTV only outputs a 16:9 image that it expects to be treated as 16:9. If it is displayed uncorrected on a 4:3 TV, it will look wrong.
The slogan on apple.com used to say "If it's on iTunes, it's on TV", but now it says "If it's on iTunes, it's on your widescreen TV". They added the "widescreen" bit recently to emphasize the nature of the device. - chewy5000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I LIKE CAPS LOCK TOO!
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think its about $200 to expensive for my taste... at $100 its a decent media extender / airtunes replacement.... at the current pricing its just beaten silly by an xbox 360 in value.
- jeddyftb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5the fact that we've had a whole slew of articles concerning what apple TV can and cannot do suggest maybe Apple never communicated properly what the hell this little device can can and cannot do.
Good job, Apple. - BamaStangGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Holy in text ads
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6i could care less. Personally dropping 12 bucks for a iTunes movie download is retarded anyway. It can only go 1280 by 720 p anything more it bogs down and the rendering looks horrible. If it crashes you have to reconnect and restart the Apple TV and iTunes !!.................
Hello people if you own a Tivo, Dishnet PVr, Media Center, Linux MCE, Myth Box/Myth TV, Vista Media Center, Xboc360 as an extender on your PC or any other free download DVR/PVR interface.
Rotten Apple TV is about as useless as ***** on a nun in todays already crowed market. Plus an iPod can do what this crap does and more !! As the ipod can at least move pics and audio to the TV, wheres as this shrunken Mac Mini can't !!!! - SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6So wait, when apple makes stuff that is considered "best in class" Everyone makes excuses to buy it because it is worth it. Now that apple has made something mediocre, people settle for it? Now all of a sudden apple cares about the little guy? Do you forget the thing costs 300 dollars?
- cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ermmm, am I the only one to remember the panic when it was speculated NOT to have HD support?
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's being dugg down because there are Apple Haters and morons lurking around with quick trigger-digger fingers. Stardard Def support? Cool beans.
I'm anxious to get an Apple TV and start juke-boxing my DVD collection. It's a stripped down Intel MacMini running OS X, that you can SSH into and add all sorts of crap to. True, you must actually have a brain, but that shouldn't be a problem for most of us. Hook that sucker up to a network drive, and you're in serious business. Contrary to popular belief, you can't really "shake sense" into people, just work hard at ignoring their influence on the world you think is cool, and occasionally stamping them out like bugs... when opportunity permits. - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2At $299 it's not overpriced, people are just under-informed. Keep reading up on what Apple TV really is, and has out of the box. Do your price comparison and show me the cheaper products that compare to it. Nothing? Ah. No surprised look here, sparky. Did you see the price on the NetGear Digital Entertainer HD? It a much more flexible product (just in terms of supported file formats and content sources), but costs $100 more while looking like your old Commodore 64. No one has started hacking it you say? I'm pretty sure the proprietary NetGear set-up isn't going to yield much fruit, whereas the Apple TV has no less than 200 fingers prying greedily at it across the nation.
Like Izacus up there, who doesn't realize that most people don't care about using XBOX 360 as a Media Xtender (this is why it hasn't erupted with popularity). Check out the FAQ ( http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/extender/mcefaq.mspx ). Let's see, I need a "Media Center" version of my Windows operating system. Sweeeeet. ***** you. I'm not upgrading to Vista Ultimate, my XP Pro doesn't count apparently, and I'm moving to the Mac anyways (which has more XBox 360 connectivity options ironically, but I'm not impressed).
Looks like AppleTV kicks ass on the number of supported platforms, especially for Windows users, nevermind Macs. Will NetGear be updated to have an interface that doesn't look like it came straight out of the 80's? Come on, even cable has gotten past that homebrew look.
I was checking out this excellent walk-thru of the NetGear Digital Entertainer at this link:
http://www.livedigitally.com/2007/03/16/netgear-eva8000-review-hands-on-with-the-digital-entertainer-hd/
I was really impressed by all the features, but after watching the monotonous and excrutiatingly dull implementation, I can't imagine EVER thinking this product is anything but a toy for nerds. (A toy for neeeeerrrrd.) The Apple TV on the otherhand is elegant and engaging... as if it were designed to actually be presentable in front of a group of non-nerd friends or family, trying to pull up a movie or some photos, and not have one of them lean over and say, "LOSER" under their breath. I really appreciate Apple for doing that for us.
My two cents. - tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You guys are not average Americans. You have HUGE e-penises. The rest of America IS mediocre compared to you guys, which is why they will buy an Apple TV and you won't. The only way mediocre Americans can cope with small e-penises is by using products that are simple to use and don't require much setup, like the Apple TV.
- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@cliffzdude
"Raise your hands, who owns or has ever seen a 4x3 regular def TV WITH component inputs? Not High Def tubage TVs, but old standard run of the mill Mom's living room 32" 480i analog TV. "
*raises his hand* My 27" 4:3 Sylvania 480i standard definition has one set of Component inputs (along with 3 composite and 2 svideo). It's about a 9 month old, $230, Circuit City, normally stocked item. Not high end at all, not even a specialty model. I think component is showing up on more lower end TVs every few months. I was surprised that this one had it. - SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12also again macfags jump a story that is complete crap to the front page. The story doesn't even link to the correct source. Good job posting this, i guess you just couldn't wait, too gitty with anticipation?
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm a Mac fan, I have a Macbook Pro and even an iPod. I cannot see a single reason why I would want an Apple TV! The thing is just a way to get Apple's DRM a foothold in our living rooms. I don't see any fair use like being able to burn dvd's of the shows in iTunes, until we can actually do what we want with the media we pay for I will be ignoring products like this.
- kilofox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The 360 is great if you dont mind having a leaf blower running in your living room. The fan noise is unacceptable... you would have to be deaf not to hear it.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You may use a 4:3 TV, but must be a digital or high-definition TV. Analog sets don't have a 16:9 mode, and digital sets do. To this day, there are still plenty of 4:3 HDTVs in the 27-32" range.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO THAT
- kingyubba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3weird. Macworld magazine says "you must use a widescreen TV"....
source: http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/03/23/pcwatv/index.php?lsrc=mwrss - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Am I the only one who cares that the only HD Content off iTunes continues to be movie trailers, frankly I don't think its worth paying $300 to watch those in HD on my TV.
I could spring a bit more and buy an Xbox 360 and have tons more functionality or if I was hardcore Apple crazy... I could spend even more and get a Mac Mini and use it to watch DVD's at least... - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just bought a $400 32" 720p/1080i LCD TV off line, granted it has a rebate but still if you put that $300 this overly useless gadget will cost you into an HDTV you can get a good deal.
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've had a non-standard TV before.
- digitalarcanum, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6only advantage that the apple tv has over an xbox 360 is a bigger hard drive and with the "special edition" 360's coming out, even that's pretty moot. Additionally the 360 supports this fine media extension known as gaming..
- nanboya, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Not necessarily true; I'm still on a "standard" definition TV and would be very interested in an Apple TV to play content; I'm still waiting for the HD formats and restrictions to sort out before I get an HDTV proper.
- digitalarcanum, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7do yourself a favor and do one of two things:
1) take the 300 dollars this thing costs and invest it towards an xbox 360 that can act as a media center extender, plays dvds, plays games, has a nice internal hard drive and it's own online mecca
or...
2) as previously stated, invest in a decent HDTV - j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's not that bad at all. Damn.
- dalesmatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1excellent news, I see 576i on the list as well, my widescreen standard def TV (with component inputs) just got a little extra lifespan.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Raise your hands, who owns or has ever seen a 4x3 regular def TV WITH component inputs? Not High Def tubage TVs, but old standard run of the mill Mom's living room 32" 480i analog TV.
Anybody? Anybody?
Nobody?
Thought so. - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1(Snicker) Just because you CAN stream video to the XBox 360, doesn't necessarily mean the Xbox is the best environment to stream your movies from, easily, and simply. Of the growing percentage of XBox 360 owners who are buying Apple TVs, I'm pretty sure all of them know what they're 360 can do, and were still unsatisfied enough to make another purchase. Just gonna throw that out there, buddy. From your link above, notice the part of the sentence that goes: "--the WMCE with HDTV compatibility for under a grand". Wow... "under a grand". Apple TV cost $300. Wireless. Streaming. Done. Nothing to be proud of, its just what it does.
- TheShockwave, on 08/21/2009, -0/+1Yep, it's true... as I just discovered last night and wondered why everyone had just become thin.
How dumb can Apple be that they don't have a 480i 4:3 output? Oh wait, it's Apple, everyone should have the latest equipment. - hollismb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@cliffzdude
Lots of people have 4:3 480i televisions with component inputs. They're pretty standard. I have a standard def, 27 inch Toshiba in the bedroom with component inputs. Check pretty much any tube tv on the internet that's over 20 inches, and not HD. They're almost all like that. Mine doesn't have a 16:9 mode either. - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I normally despise Apple fanatics, but I'm gonna give you guys some support here.
Apple TV is a great device. Overpriced? Yes. But you always pay a premium for Apple products.
Are there some shortcomings? Yes. Just as there are with other "media extender" type devices. Last I checked, my 360 can't play Xvid/Divx either.
This is a product tailored for a specific niche and it will fill it nicely. - ahknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Didn't even bother to RTFA and see the photo of it working, didya?
- chewy5000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I LIKE BAGGING PEOPLE SO MUCH THAT I PUT IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT COMMENT THREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
/sarcasm, caps lock off - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Don't cry pukester errr i mean pubster, papsmere whatever your names is
DivX or XViD are actually consider illegal forms of pirating my Microsoft so there will never be a legit way to do this at least not in M$'s eyes. (DiVX is used by pirates for files to encode them in a DiVX or XVID format)
@pabster
I'm speaking about officially sanctioned use here
There is none ass clown and never will be to do copyright protection and rights !!! That oblivious statement makes you fail at life !!!!!!!
Plus this was about streaming content in general PERIOD !! not formats types ass ***** !!!!! Transcode360 works fine it's called Beta cause it's new and still being tested so what works fine for me !!!!!!!! Your life is a ***** of problems but you don't see me calling it beta testing do you ?
Besides do some converting you lazy slag !! To WM files nuff said !!!!!!!!! - antijava, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Crowded market? I've been looking forever for a wireless hardware device that can play back h.264 video. What else is there so I can consider it? I'm currently using a Philips DVP-642 to shuttle video from my computer to my TV, but it is a rather lame solution that I want to replace.
- redxii, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Providing your TV has the Apple logo.
- indnick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too early to tell.
