- autoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, but where's all the fun?
Besides, show me one of those that has an HDMI and optical audio out. Oh, and while you're at it, show me another with 802.11n sporting an nVidia video card.
The thing is crippled codec-wise, but its quite a machine for the price. - signal15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I love OSX, however, if this box would be compatible with LinuxMCE (http://www.linuxmce.com), I'll buy one tomorrow.
I don't want to go through the hassle of building a box, I have better things to do. So if I could buy this and plug it into my satellite box somehow, I would be lovin' life. - leontes, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13I'm still not convinced that AppleTV will do well enough to to not be considered a flop. I do think these hacks extend its usability, but I'm not sure they will be enough, does the bloody thing actually do something useful enough to be bought up by enough folks?
- catbeller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And you can use it as a warmer for your cup of coffee. Damn that thing is hot.
- catbeller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As of today, you only need to open the box to upgrade the hard drive, because the boys at AppleTVHacks.net have posted a story that claims someone has managed to boot the AppleTV from the USB port, after which you can modify your AppleTV files at will! Done. No need to open the box to make it yours.
Damn, I bought a mini to be my TV front end, and now they have a 300 buck replacement. Maybe I need two TVs? - autoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is a very fine article and sum-up for anyone that wants to get into ATV hacks, links to the places you need. What whould be really cool is some kind of soft mod just to add Perian and folder browse, that would do it for me. Anyway if the hacks are stable enough I'll just grab one.
- Cbeck527, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Eventually I plan to buy a cheap server with loads of memory and use it as a samba share. Then use the ATV (with OS X or whatever) to stream my content to my TV. 720p is fine for me.
At only $299, that is a great deal! (and it looks nice) - catbeller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You'll have your soft mod in two weeks, guaranteed. They managed to boot the AppleTV from the USB port. Now it's just coding.
- jdogg707, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is becoming the ultimate convergence device of Home Theater and Computer. 120GB HD upgrade + Plugin support + Full OS X Install + Back Row = Awesome box for watching movies, TV shows, listening to music, and surfing the web. I can't wait to see what the hackers come up with next!
- memoBug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had low expectations for this product, but it as an iTunes bridge, it does what it does quite well. It's quite easy to use, and it puts a big share of multimedia content where the rest of the family can access and enjoy it.
- ketha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AppleTV is a Trojan Horse... it could be enabled to run subscription services, purchase music via iTMS, use P2P torrent software, IPTV, DVR add-ons (even)... Apple could also introduce future versions that include tv tuners... i'm not saying they will I think they're dipping there feet in, but Apple has a long term game plan and it includes the AppleTV (and iPhone, iSlate, iPod)... it's the same game everyone is playing but apple seem to really focus on user experience over bamboozling the public... the appletv unhacked is aimed at techophobes... but allowing it to be hackable has also extended its appeal to tech heads... another genius move... time will tell if it will work.
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1apple tv wills ell well but not on the 1st model. i think apple needs to make appletv with in 8 maybe 12 months
- catbeller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't think it was an accident. Apple is not a huge corporate fan of machine lockdown. They made it easy to open and easy to mod; the mini I cracked was a lot more work to open up than this little box.
- cosmicrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple TV won't sell well until it's advertised on TV. Apple is probably waiting for some more content deals to go through. I'm guessing they're waiting to put some HD content in the store before pouring their dollars in to advertising.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1For a few extra bucks you can get devices that do the same thing without you having to take the damn thing apart and fiddle around with the innards.
These "hackers" act as if it's a good thing that you have to go through all of this just to get some use out of this thing. - moocow1452, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Well, if it can be hacked like that, just after first week, then Apple's security team must be headdesking right now.
- meehawl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Wow. It's got almost the functionality of a MythTV or Media Center box from several years ago. Almost.
Amazing. - lemonloser, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3thank you geeks
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5@tenlow, you are a fag!
- Birdoftruth, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4Tenlow, you are right. I am cooler than you.
- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -18/+9Sure, it's made by apple. Meaning you need to buy one or you're not "cool" anymore.
- schoate09, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5***** the RIAA.
