- TriTech, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39I guess I'm missing something on this one. You have a MacBook which already has iTunes and Front Row which play movies and other content on you computer. Why hook up the AppleTV to play movies on your computer? Even if you hook the computer to a TV you are still reinventing the wheel.
- r2builder, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32You've not fully grasped this 'sarcasm' thing yet, have you?
- bobdobolena, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29I dunno, it doesn't look like it's actually working... It looks like there are a lot of errors's when it seem like he's trying to play a video... Having a menu pop up in OSX isn't actually calling AppleTV working.

- Vision2098, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Or has he?
- ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24"What's that sound?"
"Shh, that's Apple's lawyer fleet passing overhead..." - ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I hope someone is working on the opposite - moving full OSX to the AppleTV. I would buy a $299 Mac.
- benwaterworth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16i'd be amazed if it worked on powerpc as the appletv has an intel chip
- TotalTutorials, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15or you can just connect your comp to the internet
- lucas448, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15something like this would be great to put on an older computer with the same tech specs as the apple TV
- deadprez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Maybe someone can hack a reason to buy an Apple TV into it... like maybe DVR software?
- Disko, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Sorry for comment abuse, but this is a direct link to the vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-kNtfIUO4I
- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I couldn't watch the whole video - I'm eating breakfast and the sound of that guy struggling to breathe made me ill.
- tracydanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11If you stop and think about it, puting the apple TV interface has no more use than novelty (not that novelty is a bad thing). Front Row already comes on the computer and it has the same basic function of the apple TV (plus some). It can stream content from other computers.
- iricund, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13The interface is running yes - I haven't seen it showing any content though. Surely that's the big thing, not just pretty menu screens.
- adz999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12your mums buried
SNAP! - forumreader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yeah, because softmodded Xboxes had tons of mainstream potential...
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You know what, if I were able to run the AppleTV software on a million dollar Cray supercomputer, I would call it a cool hack and it would get on the digg frontpage. You just won't get it. Don't even try.
- TomWoozle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Tutorial on how to do it here:
http://www.appletvhacks.net/2007/03/27/apple-tv-running-on-a-macbook/ - sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@ned: Your comment was hardly any more mature.
- lickmygiggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@ggore
you're an idiot. you can see when the computer boots, he's booting the AppleTV off of an external drive. - trenskow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's intel only binary
- MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Cool. But who would like to do this? Dedicate a computer to run something that's is better for a Apple-TV box?
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Ummm XBOX = slow slow slow even menus are slow... and no HD
AppleTV = fast fast plus HD and will be very easy to turn into a kick ass mythtv front end. - idugcoal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7yea, and then you only need to buy two macs!
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Heh. Every once in a while there will be some article like this on digg, and half of the people will go: "What's the point?"
How hard is it to understand why hackers like doing such stuff?
If it really is incomprehensible, let's just say: Just because. Is that reason enough? - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I can understand people wanting to load this up on a mac mini, but i personally think it would be better to use the real OS X on a mini, and just use it as a server networked to another Mac.
- nerditup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5whats wrong with Front Row?
- TomFrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Forgot to hit reply. Like a douchebag.
Digg really needs a way to change that in edit mode. Or at least delete during edit mode. - blueigloo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yea I am not really sure why on earth you would want to run AppleTV OS on a MacBook?
- benwaterworth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4not if you check out the appletv skin all it does is change the front row icons to match the appletv ones...
...it doesn't actually change the layout like in the video - benwaterworth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3pmuse that's just like saying why try to play doom and gameboy games on an ipod (or computer)...
i'm sure i could play them on a gba for cheaper....but that's not the point. - TomFrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Everyone keeps saying this... but think of a year or two from now. You have a macbook that's pretty darn slow compared to what's out, there's some cash burning a hole in your pocket, you want a new mac and you'd kinda like an Apple TV too. Well then, upgrade your mac, and plug your old one into your TV! Viola!
I agree that there's not much application for this now since it's obviously not going to run on a G4 Powerbook, but it could make the future that much more convenient! - nextsteposx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Awesome! Now I am off to get it working on my Mac Mini
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You weren't seeing things. My guess is the guy has found a way to run the Apple TV interface framework and software inside a standard OS X install.
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The next step will be Linux.
Turn these into a kick ass less than $300 HDTV capable MythTV and LinuxMCE front end. - MikeDugg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't get the point of this. All Macs come with Front Row (which is better since it plays all codecs). Why would you put the AppleTV on a computer when you can just hook up any Mac to a tv and play Front Row on it?
- simplenation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2does anyone know how i can use my Macbook for Frontrow? I mean I wanna connect my macbook to my TV and use frontrow but I can't close the lid. I have all the cables (mini dvi to dvi to hdmi) but every time i close the lid of my macbook it goes to sleep. How can i disable it from sleeping? Thanks. Digg me down but can someone please answer me.
- r2builder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I genuinely don't understand your second question.
"Dedicate a computer to run something that's is better for a Apple-TV box?"
Do you mean any of the following:
* I advise you to dedicate a computer which will run better software than the Apple TV frontend.
* Who would dedicate a computer to run something that is better than the Apple TV software? (doesn't make sense either)
* Use the Apple TV box, and install another front-end on it (like mythtv)
There could be other interpretations - I invite you all to join in this game. The first person with the correct answer gets $1 via PayPal. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Dude...showing any content? The Apple TV draws it's content from a PC...it's possible in every sense of the word.
- sneed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think he means "Who would dedicate a computer to run something that would (work/run/be) better on an actual Apple TV?"
I tend to agree with him actually, unless you have a spare old computer around. (Or a mac that you're already using as a media center) - benwaterworth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3isn't it a bit odd the way os x loads up in the video then the appletv interface comes up straight away?
i would have thought it'd be alot easier just trying to boot the appletv os (yeah scaled down os x whatever) - atrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What about porting LinuxMCE to the aTV?
Actually, if people can get full OS X to run on these things, I'd gladly by them. It could be used as a great intro computer for 3rd world countries, except for the no warranty part... - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Easier to download an image of the Apple TV OS than spend $250 to get it.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You do realize they work on projects long before they even announce them right? They don't just go and say "hey we're going to make this product" and then go make it. They make the product and then say "hey look what we did, start drooling." If they wanted to completely reinvent the wheel they had plenty of time to do so. But like you said, there's no point to reinventing the wheel when you've already got a pretty solid base to work from.
- TheSeraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not trying to be an ass when I ask, "what/why would I want this on my C2D MacBook?" So sell me on it. Why would I want to add Apple TV to my MacBook? What would be the benefit?
- benwaterworth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3no-one mentioned getting rid of os x on the macbook just to run the appletv os.
as you can clearly see in the video it boots from a usb drive and mac os x is still on the macbook.
so this guy had a macbook, now he has a macbook with appletv functionality....
.....i don't really see why people think that is stupid. - pussyWagon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It looked like there were errors popping up when he was choosing options. I wonder if they were connection errors to an iTunes server or there was no media found type of error.
- kidjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@aedens:
its not hdtv only. it has 480i and 480p modes and works perfectly fine if you have component inputs. - kennyGS13, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7looks more legit than that other vid
