3. Are 720p iTunes TV Shows and Movies on their way?
4. If they are what will they cost? - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Looks great. Now if SeƱor Haxxor could just get bittorrent, asterisk, and other software running on it, apple'll make a *****' killing in our market. Step 1: upgrade hard drive (40 -> 60 gigger at least). Dozens of tutorials already available, Google is your friend.
Step 2: start SSHd. SomethingAwful gave us the low-down here, but in all honesty, hacking around on the file system of the AppleTV can quickly repurpose the device.
Step 3: install bittorrent. Have fun.
We're already able to do these things _now_. The only real fear is that Apple will somehow disable your boxen's ability to playback encrypted content if you modify the disk, but we've already seen this is not the case, and there's no indication it will ever be. Furthermore, I fully expect Apple to be releasing iTunes (iCinema?) for AppleTV at some point to remove the need to have a computer shuttle content to it. The box is practically screaming to be unleashed. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4"I didn't know this thing was running OSX"
Like the iPhone, it isn't OSX as you know it. It's a little bit dumbed down, optimized for the smaller hard drive and reduced processing power / RAM. I guess Apple doesn't like naming products "Mobile Addition" and such, but it is more or less like Windows Mobile and Windows XP. They're both windows, they both look the same, they both support many of the same frameworks, but you cannot run every single XP program on Windows Mobile. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10GawtMilk:
Actually from what we've learn over the last few days, the Apple TV OS is very close to a full install Mac OS X 10.4.7, it includes the full Aqua interface and APIs. Not included are the utilities and applications, apache server, some drivers, keyboards, mices, all printers etc are missing. But the rest seems pretty much intact.
From the look of it, most apps will run without problem once the keyboard and mouse problem will be fixed. The only problems some apps seem to have is the lack of SSE3, but that only affects applications that do direct calls to SSE, and there are only a few, the rest will use the OS X vector APIs abstraction layer, that will run in software when SSE is not present.
You comparison to Windows Mobile may apply to the iPhone (up to a point), but not to the Apple TV. Windows Mobile is definitely not Windows XP with some drivers missing. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Huh?
"the Apple TV OS is very close to a full install Mac OS X 10.4.7"
That's what I'm saying -- very close. It's not 10.4.7, it's the Apple TV OS. Similar, not identical. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The truth prevails, sigh.

- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Was wondering that myself, but I'm assuming it only plays when first booting up. You'd likely have it plugged in and turned on 24/7, much like a TiVo (or likely your computer as well).

enjoy! - ludy25, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I am more of a PC fan but I applaud apple fully. I think that everything they do is very well done. I own 2 iPods, the nano and the 20 gigabyte version, and love both of them. I think that iTunes is a very good bit of software, and hopefully their foray into pseudo television works well, as I would like to see them succeed, as a PC fan.
- Noobist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i put the screensaver in /library/screen savers/

but there's also a "render on main screen only" tickbox, how can this relate to appletv? maybe its already been hacked up to work on os x- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The rendering option is there for most screensavers I have seen, but not those options. Pretty sweet.

- dangerding, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14why is everyone complaining about how "long" this startup clip is? 0:18 is no longer than the TiVo startup movie, and frankly much cooler.
- bmwboy2844, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Also, unlike TiVo, AppleTV doesn't take up to 8 minutes to start up....
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12You need to install Apple Developer Tools, and then double click on the screensaver. It will open with an Application called Quartz Composer. It will show the screensaver like a flow chart, from there you should be able to edit the path that it looks at for photos.
I don't know enough about Quartz Composer to tell you exactly how to do it, but google "Make Quartz Composer Screensaver" and a bunch of tutorials will popup. - Noobist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Thanks Inkhead!!! ill try it out
- aydoubleyou, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Apple put a lot of skateboarding clips in.

- CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Before buying appletv, I wanted to see how this video will affect my nerves after few hundred times of seeing it. So I downloaded it, re encoded to win friendly format and set it as my DreamScene Vista background.
And the results are not surprising. It is damn ***** annoying. - wazzledoozle2, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5What use is 720p "capability" if they sell all their shows/movies at 480p or lower? Doesnt help that its anchored to iTunes as the only media source.
Also, the 40gb hard drive is pitiful for full-length video in 720p.- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2People are digging you down... probably because you neglected to notice all the posts about being able to upgrade the drive in these things rather easily.
I don't think anyone here can disagree with you on the HD Content portion of your post, it's ***** sad that Apple launched this little gadget without anything in a high enough quality to make the price worthwhile. - hoppocket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@wazzledoozie2, this is my main problem with the AppleTV. I would buy it in a heartbeat if there were Apple Store HD content. Until then, I'll probably wait.

As a proud owner of an AppleTV, you only see that movie when you cycle the power (ie - unplug the power cord from the back). Otherwise, you just hold down the play/pause button on the remote and it goes to sleep like an iPod does. When it wakes up, that movie doesn't play and just dumps you into the main menu.- wilhoitm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Thanks, I've had it for 3 days and was wondering how to turn it off or put it to sleep! LOL
- gunnerycox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Interesting about the HD quality of this video. Apple says the Apple TV supports video up to 5 Mbps, But this video is 6024kbps or 6Mbps. Why would apple put their own demo video at a bitrate above the spec? Perhaps they are being conservative with what the actual hardware can render. HD videos in the iTunes store soon.

- robinator08, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I still like the centropy intros better.
- Ulrika, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I have experience with Quartz Composer and thought I'd look at the screen saver to see what it would take to get it to work. Loading it up in Quartz Composer, it appears that the FloatingPhotos.qtz file has six inputs, SpinFrequency, SpinLeft, SpinRight, FrontImages, MiddleImages, and BackImages. As folks have discovered, when run as a screen saver the final three options cannot be defined. (The option input box says "Structure not editable".) The reason appears to be that these inputs expect structs with three components, x, y, and image. Thus, the trick to get this to work is to create additional code to convert a list of files into a struct that matches what the current code expects or to rewrite the code to work with a list of image files. I'll start tinkering and see what I come up with. :)
- Noobist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i don't really have any experience with this sorta stuff, couldnt find anywhere where it actually grabs a file, and yes it does seem to require x and y. would be great to see what you come up with. ill keep trying but i doubt ill b able to help all that much :p
it's a great screen saver, hope someone can get it to work - Ulrika, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Partial success! I realized that FrontImages, MiddleImages, and BackImages are structures that hold structures. The initial structure is a list accessed by index. Each element of the list is another structure that contains three variables accessed by key (x, y, and image). This is very similar to the output created by the "Folder Images" Source in Quartz Composer.
So, I aded a "Folder Images" Source and connected it to FI, MI, and BI. I then descended into each "3D Transformation" macro (for example "Root Macro Patch > 3D Transformation > Front > Iterator"), disconnected x and y and then changed the key from "image" to "url". Imediately after the "url" "Structure Key" Member Modifier, I added an "Image Downloader" Generator and *pow*, I have images!
Unfortunately, the images don't move vertically right now (I guess that's what the x and y are for), however the static images do do that cool rotation every few seconds. :D
I'll keep going... - benradler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3AAAAHHH. We love you, keep trying. Unfortunately, my programming knowledge is with C#, so this is all a bit confusing to me :(
- theorem7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I was using about this same process to try and fix it, but wasn't sure how to access the images. Does this screen saver show images from the iPhoto album or from iTunes album art? (I don't have an Apple TV) I would think iTunes album art would be a bit difficult, seeing as they imbed the images in the song files... But I think a users iPhoto album would be much easier to pull images from...
- benradler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ulrika -- I have a buddy over who is good with quartz compositer -- if you can send your version of the saver my way we'll take a look and see what we can do. Let me know.
- Noobist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1awesome! ill try it. duno how ill go :p
maybe u could try creating a random variable for x and y? obviously not too high tho - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've got it working, too, by using a folder source and image downloader.
I'm guessing that the input structure containing images and x/y coordinates is generated programmatically and passed to the qtz in code. - Noobist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i slightly have it working! the image spins, yet i can only see 1 image, not multiple. but its good to see that it's not that hard to get it working!
- benradler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Astrosmash -- As I just posted, I've got a friend here with me who is fairly good with quartz *****, so if you wanna send what you've got my way, we'll check it out and see what we can do.
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1By the way, there are lots of sample projects that demonstrate embedding and passing parameters to quartz composer compositions in XCode, in /Developer/Examples/Quartz Composer/.
The SlideShow example demonstrates passing a structure of images to a qtz composition. - Ulrika, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hmm. I think that this Quartz Composer file is called by Objective C code that passes the Quartz Composer file an array with the names and positions of each image for an instant in time. It is this code that is responsible for selecting the files, randomly distributing them over the face of three planes, and then incrementally moving them upward. Each move upward the images make is another call to the Quartz Composer file. Thus, it seems that this Quartz Composer file is missing the "engine" that selects and moves the images vertically (although it does do the "spin").
With this in mind, I connected an image's index to it's x value and put an LFO Controller (low-frequency oscillator) on the y value. This had the effect of spreading the images out horizontally by index and bouncing them up and down sinusoidally. So, it seems like it shouldn't be too hard to reproduce the missing "engine" code that keeps track of and drives the images. The only problem is that I don't if it's possible to create structs in Quartz Composer. Hmm. :/ - theorem7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't know how entirely relevant this is, but it almost looks as if this engine was made so that it could also be to be used to view a set of images. Browsing through the quartz file, I found that some of the events are able to be triggered by user input (in this case, the arrow keys). I followed your process to retrieve images (I used my iPhoto library), and then discovered that the "cool rotation" you refer to can be initiated by pressing the right or left arrow key, and it will rotate the corresponding way.
- Noobist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i tried using some random variables between -1 and 1 for the x and y values, this created a rather odd effect :p i hav no idea what causes the images to change though. i can only see 3 images at most, aren't there meant to be more? i used the wallpapers that come with OS X are the images scaled? or is it dependant on the resolution of them (for thier size?)
- benradler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1noobist -- send the qtz file to bradler@uci.edu -- got some friends over here working on it too, would like to see what you've got going.
- Noobist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1just sent it
- benradler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1thanks, gonna work on it, will email results.
- Ulrika, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8OK. I've gotten as far as I'll probably get. I've attached all the x values to an image's index and I turned the LFO into a saw function so that images move slowly from the bottom to the top. It looks similar to the screen saver with the exception that I can only load a single image and all of the images have the same y value so they all march upward in a single line. :D
Reproducing the functionality of the aforementioned "engine" should be trivial in Objective C, however it is quite beyond me in Quartz Composer. If anyone wants to see what I've done, you can download the file at http://www.ulrikasheim.org/FloatingPhotos-Ulrika-0.qtz
For Safari users, if you get an error that the composition can't be run, just right click and save it.
Good luck! - Noobist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2coolies, thanks
- lrdntwnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone think that maybe it's meant to be used with Core Animation? It may not work in Tiger and it may be relying on technologies only found in Leopard... Just a thought.
- Noobist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2thanks for the work Ulrika, will be interesting to see what the others come up with. oh yea u can set different images by using a seperate "Folder Images" with different paths, but it will only change the three layers to three images. i couldnt get the images seperated like u did tho
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've got it working in Xcode by hacking the SlideShow sample project.
I pass in an array of NSDictionary objects containing image, x, and y keys. It accepts these and displays the images, so now it's just a matter of choosing good values for x and y, and getting the thing to animate. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Here it is, application and source code:
http://www.csc.uvic.ca/~dastone/Floating%20Photos.zip
Cmd+q to quit. It just reads 9 pictures out of /Library/Desktop Pictures/
So, there are three arrays (front, middle, and back) and each array contains 3 images, for a total of 9 images. The problem is that if the arrays contain more than one image each, performance drops like a rock and I don't understand why. I worked around the problem by scaling the images down to 256x256, but that shouldn't be necessary because there doesn't appear to be any performance issues when running inside Quartz Composer.
Other than the performance problem, it would probably be a little bit of work to provide a continuous stream of images; presumably the array would need to contain many more images.
- wilhoitm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Does this mean that the Apple TV can run Quartz Composer compositions?
- Noobist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6yep :)
- andrewcod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Yes, it's running a scaled down version of OSX.
edit - beaten by a noob. What an insult. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What's cool about that is that you'll be able to add all sorts of nice features to your Apple TV screen saver. For example, adding a current time display would be trivial, just drag the "System Time" module in Quartz Composer and Voila!
- TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6You know it would be really cool if we could get ahold of the Final Cut or Shake project file and replace every movie tile with some random porn. Good joke on a friend with an Apple TV. Eh? Or just re render it in 3x speed.

Then do a File->Save as a .mov file, put it in your Movies folder, open System Utilities, go to Accounts and then to your accounts "Startup" pane. Drag the movie in, and log out and in on your Mac. When you login, it plays ;)
This obviously could be done even nicer with scripts but its a workable quick fix. :)

- ROYALWITHCHEESE, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2it's kinda lame
- collareddrifter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1For some reason i cant wrap my head around this product. Why do you need it? I just cant see people going out and buying this regularly, like Mac computers for instance. Why cant people just connect their computers, to their TV's?
but, people have said that about iPods... CD's... hardrives.... i dont even care. to me its still an awsome product. - OGla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This is probably the inspiration for the whole lots-of-screens idea of the video:

Using as a desktop wallpaper via DeskShade. It's so awesome.
My question is, the AppleTV OS? Isn't it just an app running on a half-install of OS X 10.4.7? - Noobist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i'm not sure if anybody else has noticed this, but 2 new downloads we're added to the main link. one of them was a zip of the OS running on the apple TV, i was having a browse through it and i noticed a couple of interesting things...
there is a folder called /System/Library/Autormator/
within it are some action files called, "new video capture.action" and "pause capture.action" and "stop cature.action". is this hinting towards beign able to record TV? in OS X the same files can be found in the same location, but there are more, it seems a selected few remain on the apple tv, why would they be there if they have no use?
also in System/Library/CoreServices theres various files relating to bluetooth, including a "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" could this be used with the future iPhone to use the iPhone as a remote? some patents by apple from a few months ago hinted this.
there's also a few .component files in the QuickTime folder you wouldnt expect to see, such as FireWireDV? but there isnt even a firewire port, although there are four unplugged pins within the devide, mayb there will be a future version with a firewire port that will allow for watchin movies from a dv camera?
there also a 3GPP codec, MPEG, and of course MPEG4 and H264. maybe the other formats relate to streaming content from a mobile? iphone anyone?
also the login pictures are on the apple tvs hard drive...
doubt any of this means anythingm but it certainly seems odd that they would keep unessecary files like that, when most files from OS X hav been removed.- Roybertito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A 3GPP codec? That's rather surprising. I mean, I'd expect bluetooth, but I don't think it has anything to do with the iPhone - though it IS very possible, and would be VERY interesting. The .action files are a bit shocking, because that shows that Automator.app is on there somewhere as well.
3GPP codec... why? That's mostly mobile media, such as videos recorded off of camera phones. iPhone can record video, maybe, and then you can extract them into iTunes? THAT would be awesome functionality, and I really hope Apple's going to implement something like that.
Now, I'm going to take a look through the files. I'm sure that the AppleTV GUI is nothing more than an app, like Front Row. If it is, then I'm going to use it on my MacBook. And exploit it. Because that GUI is awesome.
