- mcwiggin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+50It should have enough bandwidth it handle it. But I have never been dugg before... so we are about to see what happens
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+43Looks great. Now if Apple would actually offer some 720p content, I'd buy one of these things!
- mcwiggin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44Someone may want to mirror this before my server melts down. The QT video is about 15 meg.
- AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -7/+41@alwaysmc2 Art is pointless. Beauty is Pointless. The things that make us human have no value.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34Is that one of those HD YouTube videos?
- r2builder, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35I've set up a torrent here:

Thanks mcwiggin. - bobmagoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32but o so pretty...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33Wait... Does this play every time you start AppleTV?
- wonderchemist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30File is static and his server is giving me 900k/sec. He may indeed have enough bandwidth to be dugg!
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+251. The intro video is 720p
2. The machine can handle 720p as per it's sworn specs
3. Are 720p iTunes TV Shows and Movies on their way?
4. If they are what will they cost? - AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21@slave25637
No I am not being pretentious and no my screen name has nothing to do with this.
What I mean to say is that, you may not like it for an intro (and I don't know that I would like it if every time I turn it on it did that) but to say it doesn't serve a purpose ("pointless") is foolish. When you install OS 10.4 for the first time (or setup a new computer), you are greated with an intro video. While they could just let you set up your computer without the video at all, the interactivity of the sound and motion ads a sense of dimension to a typically tedious setup task. I wouldn't want to see it every time I booted up, but I believe that it has intrinsic value as art, and a purpose in the short delight it provides. - NWVG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Mirror just in case: http://reimaginememories.com/fileserver1/functions.php?m=get&fileKey=06a6c0b124e78e2232b3066c00b7b3ed&userId=20
Awesome video; the Apple fanboy in me wants to buy an Apple TV just for this.
Thanks for sharing it with us. - ludy25, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I am more of a PC fan but I applaud apple fully. I think that everything they do is very well done. I own 2 iPods, the nano and the 20 gigabyte version, and love both of them. I think that iTunes is a very good bit of software, and hopefully their foray into pseudo television works well, as I would like to see them succeed, as a PC fan.
- zadak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17How do I get the screensaver to work?
- Ulrika, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I have experience with Quartz Composer and thought I'd look at the screen saver to see what it would take to get it to work. Loading it up in Quartz Composer, it appears that the FloatingPhotos.qtz file has six inputs, SpinFrequency, SpinLeft, SpinRight, FrontImages, MiddleImages, and BackImages. As folks have discovered, when run as a screen saver the final three options cannot be defined. (The option input box says "Structure not editable".) The reason appears to be that these inputs expect structs with three components, x, y, and image. Thus, the trick to get this to work is to create additional code to convert a list of files into a struct that matches what the current code expects or to rewrite the code to work with a list of image files. I'll start tinkering and see what I come up with. :)
- Ulrika, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Partial success! I realized that FrontImages, MiddleImages, and BackImages are structures that hold structures. The initial structure is a list accessed by index. Each element of the list is another structure that contains three variables accessed by key (x, y, and image). This is very similar to the output created by the "Folder Images" Source in Quartz Composer.
So, I aded a "Folder Images" Source and connected it to FI, MI, and BI. I then descended into each "3D Transformation" macro (for example "Root Macro Patch > 3D Transformation > Front > Iterator"), disconnected x and y and then changed the key from "image" to "url". Imediately after the "url" "Structure Key" Member Modifier, I added an "Image Downloader" Generator and *pow*, I have images!
Unfortunately, the images don't move vertically right now (I guess that's what the x and y are for), however the static images do do that cool rotation every few seconds. :D
I'll keep going... - andrewcod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Yes, it's running a scaled down version of OSX.
edit - beaten by a noob. What an insult. - brewno2k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14mcwiggin, thanks for the upload.
- rocketengineer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@backfire103 and @CheapDigWannbe
As a proud owner of an AppleTV, you only see that movie when you cycle the power (ie - unplug the power cord from the back). Otherwise, you just hold down the play/pause button on the remote and it goes to sleep like an iPod does. When it wakes up, that movie doesn't play and just dumps you into the main menu. - r2builder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Torrent:

Please seed. Thanks. - BobaFettTDG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Screensaver does not appear to work...
- Noobist, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14hrmm how u get screen saver to work?
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12You need to install Apple Developer Tools, and then double click on the screensaver. It will open with an Application called Quartz Composer. It will show the screensaver like a flow chart, from there you should be able to edit the path that it looks at for photos.
I don't know enough about Quartz Composer to tell you exactly how to do it, but google "Make Quartz Composer Screensaver" and a bunch of tutorials will popup. - dangerding, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14why is everyone complaining about how "long" this startup clip is? 0:18 is no longer than the TiVo startup movie, and frankly much cooler.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11For some people it is worth it, especially those with Mac-only households. There have been options for wireless Windows boxes to TV before, but Macs haven't had many options for it to this point. Apple's problem right now is the content, there just isn't any HD content available on iTunes. I have a Mac-only home and have been dying to be able to watch my downloaded TV shows on my TV, this will make that possible. I do think it is a little over-price however. If they had combined this with an airport extreme, and offered it for the same price, I think it would be a real success.
Now if only I had an HDTV. Saving up tho, 2 more months til I bring home my new LCD. :) - str3ama, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13hmmm....it looks like they cribbed the image from the front cover of "Consumer Convergence: Where Old and New Media Diverge"

http://aycu07.webshots.com/image/11046/2005621628432202912_rs.jpg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Here it is, application and source code:
http://www.csc.uvic.ca/~dastone/Floating%20Photos.zip
Cmd+q to quit. It just reads 9 pictures out of /Library/Desktop Pictures/
So, there are three arrays (front, middle, and back) and each array contains 3 images, for a total of 9 images. The problem is that if the arrays contain more than one image each, performance drops like a rock and I don't understand why. I worked around the problem by scaling the images down to 256x256, but that shouldn't be necessary because there doesn't appear to be any performance issues when running inside Quartz Composer.
Other than the performance problem, it would probably be a little bit of work to provide a continuous stream of images; presumably the array would need to contain many more images. - jasonlich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What hosting package do you have?
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10GawtMilk:
Actually from what we've learn over the last few days, the Apple TV OS is very close to a full install Mac OS X 10.4.7, it includes the full Aqua interface and APIs. Not included are the utilities and applications, apache server, some drivers, keyboards, mices, all printers etc are missing. But the rest seems pretty much intact.
From the look of it, most apps will run without problem once the keyboard and mouse problem will be fixed. The only problems some apps seem to have is the lack of SSE3, but that only affects applications that do direct calls to SSE, and there are only a few, the rest will use the OS X vector APIs abstraction layer, that will run in software when SSE is not present.
You comparison to Windows Mobile may apply to the iPhone (up to a point), but not to the Apple TV. Windows Mobile is definitely not Windows XP with some drivers missing. - Yazoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Someone should setup a torrent.
- wilhoitm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8no, I have only seen it once so far....
- bmwboy2844, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Also, unlike TiVo, AppleTV doesn't take up to 8 minutes to start up....
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Was wondering that myself, but I'm assuming it only plays when first booting up. You'd likely have it plugged in and turned on 24/7, much like a TiVo (or likely your computer as well).
- Ulrika, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8OK. I've gotten as far as I'll probably get. I've attached all the x values to an image's index and I turned the LFO into a saw function so that images move slowly from the bottom to the top. It looks similar to the screen saver with the exception that I can only load a single image and all of the images have the same y value so they all march upward in a single line. :D
Reproducing the functionality of the aforementioned "engine" should be trivial in Objective C, however it is quite beyond me in Quartz Composer. If anyone wants to see what I've done, you can download the file at http://www.ulrikasheim.org/FloatingPhotos-Ulrika-0.qtz
For Safari users, if you get an error that the composition can't be run, just right click and save it.
Good luck! - AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7There are hacks now, and will be more in the future hopefully, that will probably make this quite a nice system. I also wish it had more options built in by default, but I wouldn't write it off yet.

same thing. - slevit1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'll admit that I'm a major apple fanboy and used to work for apple....but for some reason, that intro just makes me happy. Well done!
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Looks great. Now if SeƱor Haxxor could just get bittorrent, asterisk, and other software running on it, apple'll make a *****' killing in our market. I didn't realize this thing was running actual OS X, as a quick look around the interweb shows...
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"bittorrent"
Step 1: upgrade hard drive (40 -> 60 gigger at least). Dozens of tutorials already available, Google is your friend.
Step 2: start SSHd. SomethingAwful gave us the low-down here, but in all honesty, hacking around on the file system of the AppleTV can quickly repurpose the device.
Step 3: install bittorrent. Have fun.
We're already able to do these things _now_. The only real fear is that Apple will somehow disable your boxen's ability to playback encrypted content if you modify the disk, but we've already seen this is not the case, and there's no indication it will ever be. Furthermore, I fully expect Apple to be releasing iTunes (iCinema?) for AppleTV at some point to remove the need to have a computer shuttle content to it. The box is practically screaming to be unleashed. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It doesn't take a Mac-only household, anyone that uses iTunes at all heavily or buys TV shows from Apple (well over one million sold so far) can make use of. The AppleTV can get video/audio from either Windows or Mac iTunes.
- hanapbuhay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@mcwiggin: Yes. Inquiring minds want to know... surprised your site is able to handle this.
- skidogallard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You should just be able to drop it into the Screen Savers folder
Here's the path to it
Macintosh HD/Library/Screen Savers - OGla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This is probably the inspiration for the whole lots-of-screens idea of the video:
http://creative.gettyimages.com/source/search/DetailPopup.aspx?imageIndex=46&masterID=57194282&bc=SCF&rfsum=False - gunnerycox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Interesting about the HD quality of this video. Apple says the Apple TV supports video up to 5 Mbps, But this video is 6024kbps or 6Mbps. Why would apple put their own demo video at a bitrate above the spec? Perhaps they are being conservative with what the actual hardware can render. HD videos in the iTunes store soon.
- Noobist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i put the screensaver in /library/screen savers/
it appears in the screen saver setting and has it own options, such as spinfrequency, spin right, spin left.
there's also 'MiddleImages', 'FrontImages', 'BackImages', but in the text area for each it says '
damn...
but there's also a "render on main screen only" tickbox, how can this relate to appletv? maybe its already been hacked up to work on os x - Ulrika, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hmm. I think that this Quartz Composer file is called by Objective C code that passes the Quartz Composer file an array with the names and positions of each image for an instant in time. It is this code that is responsible for selecting the files, randomly distributing them over the face of three planes, and then incrementally moving them upward. Each move upward the images make is another call to the Quartz Composer file. Thus, it seems that this Quartz Composer file is missing the "engine" that selects and moves the images vertically (although it does do the "spin").
With this in mind, I connected an image's index to it's x value and put an LFO Controller (low-frequency oscillator) on the y value. This had the effect of spreading the images out horizontally by index and bouncing them up and down sinusoidally. So, it seems like it shouldn't be too hard to reproduce the missing "engine" code that keeps track of and drives the images. The only problem is that I don't if it's possible to create structs in Quartz Composer. Hmm. :/ - dangerding, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8mirror to full res 720p mov: http://senduit.com/66e542
