- ricksite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+70I think it would have been pretty funny to find an iPod inside.
- n00bst3r, on 10/12/2007, -5/+52Lets see how many AppleTV stories we can front page within 24 hours! YAY!
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34Seems like it won't be much of a problem replacing that harddrive.
- rcran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25I always laugh to myself at how fast these guys are to cut these things open.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24"Seems like it won't be much of a problem replacing that harddrive."
It depends on the file system and encryption. I have yet to see anyone replace an xbox 360 drive with a larger one. - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23I just seen that on FOX report and said hey I can do all that on my tv tunner card and run the s video to the tv.
Lame product
1. "I just seen that" It's "I just saw this" you degenerate.
2. No, it does everything that your "tunner" card CAN'T do, but WON'T do DVR functions.
3. s-video is MUCH worse quality than component video or HDMI, so I'm not sure why you would mention it.
4. Lame product? Maybe, but not for any of your reasons. - EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Wow 720p on your s-video ? Must be s for super
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16you can't do it with the 360 because the firmware forces it to a max of 20gb.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18@thejackamo
But yet, ironically, you brought it up.... - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Top 10 reasons ?TV's decision leaves Jenna Fischer nude on my cardboard furniture.
- smallSHEEP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Anandtech also took one apart : http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2951
And being Anandtech they actually accompany the photos with some meaningful discussion. - EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I don't think so. There's no need for a SATA plus can you imagine how cheap a 40 gig pata drive is now if you buy them in bulk.
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12You didn't know it was a 40 gig device?
Apple has the Airport Extreme as their NAS server which : gasp : stacks perfectly with the AppleTV. Coincidence? - tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yeah we're watching video, not editing it.
- therightclique, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11wait what!??!?!? s-video? are you serious? i hope not. either way, you might also note that this thing has component & hdmi video, which means it can send HD signals, which s-video cannot do. also, your lame tv card probably doesn't have optical audio either.
- thejackamo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@ninjab3ar
it's a vicious cycle, ain't it - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There goes the warranty.
Next step: Apple TV hacks - Rexeisen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Ummm...you didn't figure out that 40 GB is less than 92.5 GB when you actually bought it?
Also you can stream data to the TV, so it seems like a moot point. - clesch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7a P-ATA drive... odd.
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6my understanding is that xboxs have a tendency to freak out with hacked firmware (modchips, etc) because of game piracy..... the AppleTV doesn't need that kind of security since it streams media off other computers. yeah, i'm speculating and that's bad, but i'm sure people are already working on that. i'm also sure people will be figuring out how to install linux.

http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/briantr/Apple%20TV/ - bbeahm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i would think that you could at least try copying the original hard drive (carbon copy cloner) onto a bigger one and see if it would go.
- nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Seems like it won't be much of a problem replacing that harddrive."
Apparently this won't be nearly as tough as keeping their webserver up. - skankin231, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Better yet, connect a portable hard drive or an iPod. See if anything happens.
- Metaridley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What Apple is trying to do is make a simple TV setbox for simple people. That's what they said anyway.
- idean360, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think just buying a Mac Mini is a better solution, I mean you can even stream stuff from other computers to the Mini, and it does email/web/anything...for less than double the price.
- howismydriving, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I am hoping that the new Mac Minis will be getting the same graphics chipset with dedicated video memory like what the Apple TV uses. That would really make the Mini an almost perfect computer for every day use.
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8No computer should be sold without a dedicated graphics card.
- idean360, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4most people open their devices in such a way that they can put them back together again...
- isewise, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12http://www.misterbg.org/AppleProductCycle/
Scroll down to step 22 in the cycle.
I post this link every time is see one of these stories and I will continue too. - mrpippy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That's a terrible idea--the Apple TV has a Type A (host-side) USB port like computers do, not a client-side like a printer would have. If you managed to find the cables to hook a host-side to your Mac, it would not work, and you might damage the devices.
- jccalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the system only has 256mb of ram, so I don't think it will be much good for playing modern games anyway.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Use Disk Utility to do a block copy and keep an image for just-in-caseties.
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Aha! AnAndTech finally get the Torx Drivers out and we get a PROPER take-apart, with gruesome details! Nice! :)
- wullerdewust, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I can just imagine what the guy is thinking... "Ok case is open, 300 bucks gone and I still cant find that frack'n record button"
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"I just seen that on FOX report and said hey I can do all that on my tv tunner card and run the s video to the tv.
Lame product"
And if I could afford to put an entire computer next to my computer I would. But in reality-land not everyone can afford an entire computer. - jues, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@tsunamisteve - you think that the Bus connection on a 7,200RPM HDD makes any difference? ATA-66 isn't a bottleneck and was superceded by ATA-100 / 133 many years ago. The only benefit from SATA is that the cabling is much easier to manage. Sure, when we have consumer hard disks spinning at 10 or 15k, 300mbps is gonna come in real handy, but in the iTV - makes no difference... ;)
- djbelieve, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Can someone help me out here? When I download TV shows from the iTunes music store and watch them on my computer I get video that is garbage quality in full screen. How does Apple TV make this any different?
- howismydriving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is what I did. I have a 1.66 Core Duo Mini with a TV/DVR tuner on a USB2 connection. It allows me to use Front Row and the Apple remote. I can play DVDs, see photos, and also play other files that the Apple TV can't.
I have 3 500 Newtech external HDs that have the same form factor as the Mini. The Mini and my TV have a DVI plugin, and the Mini can drive the tv natively at 1080i.
Along with the TV, the Mini has a digital optical out that goes into an Outlaw HT receiver for the sound. It is small, quiet, and offers quite the Apple experience for media. I have over 200 DVDs on the HDs, along with 200 hours or so of recorded tv shows. I also have over 8,000 songs from my CD collection that I have ripped into Apple lossless format, so the music side is covered too.
If anyone has any questions or stuff, just hit me up, and I will answer them on this kind of setup. - Jabjabs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice to finally see these things ripped apart, I was always interested to see just how they fit it all in there. Also didn't know that they had an Nvidia GPU in it which was a nice surprise since I though they would of gone with GMA 900/950 again.
- Hackzaur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I love the Uncommon Project YBox in which they make an "internet connected box" out of an altoids tin. Can work on any TV. APPLE ROKS MY SOXS
- jonr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, has anybody actually seen HD output from this gizmo? All I have seen is unpacking and dissecting photos.
- bakingoven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Apple TV Dissection... or as some call it geek porn.
- vcleniuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Mmmmm... smells like opening a fresh can o' Pringles.
- phytonix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1is Go 7300 good enough for some serious 3D games?
- zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1open it up and see how much money you are wasting.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"Everyday use" means onboard video buddy. Sorry but if you have an application that *needs* a dedicated video then you need to not be running a $600 mini computer.
- nsjoker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Where'd all the files go?
- ratzfatz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Great find - I bookmarked. Wonderful read. A very friendly thank you for this post.
- idean360, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1what they should have done is added a cable line in, and allow you to record TV to the hard drive...
A great semi-viral effort would be to not right any restrictions on thew HD...thus allowing experienced users to crack open their AppleTV and swap the HD to a larger one. -
