- WestonP, on 10/11/2008, -28/+115This is nitpicking. Mine came packed the same way, and it's excessive and all, but the nitpicking is far more irritating.
- macwisdom, on 10/11/2008, -5/+84sorry to bust your bubble , but that is a standard Apple Service package size , I have seen Xserv video, fiber and megariad cards all show up in the same size box.
- joncannon, on 10/11/2008, -18/+68Amazon does the same crap every day, this goes especially for CDs. I feel sorry for the trees.
- mechnoch, on 10/11/2008, -5/+54Pretty much all Apple parts that have to be returned ship in a box like that. If you didn't have to send the other one back you'd have gotten a manila envelope with a bubble-wrap liner.
- thejacknut, on 10/11/2008, -13/+60I SERIOUSLY doubt human use of paper products will deplete the earth's tree population. Do any of you realize that trees are a RENEWABLE resource? Modern recycling practices, along with responsible lumber producers, insure that earth will not run shy of her required amount of trees due to the production of paper. If there is any real threat to the world's tree population, it is the irresponsible destruction of rain forests.
Buried for erroneous reporting of a non-issue.
(Sounds to me like someone is really reaching to find a reason to pick on the Apple company.) - Gee1004, on 10/11/2008, -4/+49This is a return box.
- mvanhorn, on 10/11/2008, -3/+47You're supposed to send the other one back and DHL comes and picks it up. Then in theory they could reuse it again?
- oblivian92, on 10/11/2008, -6/+38Why the ***** is this on the front page?
- GliliumHkY, on 10/11/2008, -1/+24Really? I just received my order with is packed in just an envelop with bubble wrap. That's all.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -4/+22Because you are blowing him.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/11/2008, -5/+23But but but badwithcomputer posted it. It must be true.
I got mine in the same box. Sent it out in the same box. As someone who has worked for Apple I can tell you they are exceptionally environmentally conscious. Especially for a tech company. - somejuicy, on 10/11/2008, -4/+15My friend's package was even bigger since he ordered it online to ship to our country, Thailand. What a waste!
- linagee, on 10/11/2008, -0/+10Burried. Keep it simple like, "Your friend's package was bigger?".
- TyrannousDotNet, on 10/11/2008, -2/+11you can recycle cardboard, it is great for planting and gardens too
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -2/+10I'm pretty sure the energy expended to manufacture and pack boxes of all sizes to accommodate every product they have would far outweigh the cost of using an extra square decimeter of recyclable cardboard. Same goes for any company that ships products, like Amazon.
- flarn2006, on 10/11/2008, -0/+7That's what she said.
- pfranz, on 10/11/2008, -3/+10Are you telling us that a 17yo from San Fran walked in on you blowing Lurch?
- soopafly, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8I would hope so. Would you rather have it in a box that fit your Mini exactly so it could be bang up in transit?
- sladek, on 10/11/2008, -0/+7None of the paper or card used in all of the big shipping companies is used from non-renuable or 'wild' forrests.
They're all made from quick growing trees in special forrests that are replanted - partrow, on 10/11/2008, -4/+10You don't realize that pulp trees are a renewable resource, grown to about 4" in diameter as crops? Do you feel sorry for corn, barley and sugar cane too? How funny.
- hollywoodphony, on 10/11/2008, -1/+7Well, apparently they disagree:
http://www.apple.com/environment/ - nzezelj89, on 10/11/2008, -3/+9But Apple LOVES trees! /sarcasm (First iPhone bill...given it's AT&T's fault, gotta point at someone, it's the American way)
- chelsealeaf, on 10/11/2008, -1/+6Having worked for Apple in the past, they are standard parts shipping boxes. There are heavy envelopes used on occasion, but the box is better to avoid crushing. Quit yr bitching.
- AlekNovi, on 10/11/2008, -1/+6You might want to do some research on the way paper is produced. Its not made from "wild trees" in some exotic forests... Like some hippies would like to have you believe. All of today's paper is produced from special "paper tree farms". They actually take a big piece of private land and PLANT trees, which are grown especially for paper.
The more paper we spend, the more trees get planted. - tkcom, on 10/11/2008, -3/+8Underwhelming.
- FoxOrian, on 10/11/2008, -1/+6Besides, sometimes I find getting those kinds of packages useful, with the padding and all. Helps when I have to ship a small fragile object to someone.
- cesar33, on 10/11/2008, -3/+8It's a BOX, why is this news people?
I want those 3 minutes of my life back. - danielazarc, on 11/17/2009, -0/+4Because the box is too big! The internets must be alerted of Apple's complete utter failure!!!!11
/s, as it's probably necessary. - judicar, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4That's just the smallest box Apple has for shipping service parts, replacement RAM comes in the same box.
Apple gets the boxes back and reuses them so yeah it is more environmentally conscious than sending a smaller throw away box. - thatsmyaibo, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4Why? Can't he just recycle it?
- defectDS, on 10/11/2008, -3/+7...and with Greenpeace constantly breathing down their back.
- Philbert, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4This reminds me of when I worked at Best Buy years ago in the media department. Media does it's own shelf stocking and we would get shipments all the time that included a big 3x3 foot box containing 2 or 3 CDs. Not even packing material, just a big empty box with a couple of CDs rattling around.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3OK, nothing is as bad as what Apple does for .Mac/MobileMe... I bought a subscription last December and recieved a box... with a small piece of paper inside with a registration code.
They could have easily just e-mailed me the code, but no, they sent me a box instead. - glitchbit, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3Bob: Umm... Steve it looks like we have a faulty AC adapter for millions of iPods..
Steve: So ship them new ones...
Bob: But we only have Millions of unused large boxes meant for bigger parts, should we place an order for millions of little boxes instead?
Steve: What's cheaper?
Bob: Right.
I hope this was entertaining enough to educate you people, your an idiot if you think Apple is going to place a separate order of boxes just for AC adapters, while technically cheaper individually, it does not end up that way when you already have a large bulk order of a different size which is meant to be used for several different parts. Also let's say they had a form fitting box for that part, what are they chances that it would not get lost in the mail vs a big box? - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -4/+7That's not comically large. Comically large would be a wooden crate that needs to be wheeled in on a dolly.
Somebody needs to learn what "comical" means. - ExSlashdotter, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4Psssh, have you ever ordered from staples direct?
I kid you not. Order 10 laptop bags the other day, and I got 10 boxes, each with one bag in it even though it could hold like 5. But dont worry, they filled the box with airbags to pad the *soft laptop bag* from getting banged around. - wukillabee, on 10/11/2008, -4/+7bury this ***** article
- MorningZ, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4Considering it got shipped to me for free and then all i had to do was call an 800 number to have it picked back up from me, i wouldn't have cared if it came in a box the size of a fridge, heh heh
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -2/+5The fact is, the box is sized so that the item does not become lost in transit.
- Tyrghast, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3Renewable resourceses aren't much good if you're chopping them down faster than they grow.
In any case, apple is probably saving time/money/trees by buying a few box sizes rather than ordering a different size box for each replacement product. - thejacknut, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2Touché. Excellent point. I was only responding to the material presented in the article.
- bluehavana, on 10/11/2008, -4/+6You may be right about the use of trees for paper, but what about the energy required to produce and ship a larger box as well as the foam padding? Water waste is also starting to become an issue, especially in developing countries (like the ones producing packing materials). Think of how much water was required to produce this box, that water then has to be treated (with energy being a factor there as well) to be let back out into the wild.
Now multiply that by Apples regular return rates of small items.
I am not saying that apple is wasting _so_ much more resources by shipping in boxes a little too big for the contents, just that trees are not the only issue here. Waste of anything is not erroneous, especially on scales of Apple's and Amazon's size. - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -1/+3With large stacks of money.
- edicius, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2I had my iPod serviced and it was shipped in the same sized box as my iPhone adapter came in. It is their standard shipping box, that seems like it would save money to reuse these boxes instead of creating a new shipping box for every different sized item they make.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -5/+7If DELL or MICROSOFT had done this, the consumerist and diggers would be throwing a f'in fit right now.
But since it's Apple, oh la de de, it's hillarious!!!!
I'm just sayin... - TyrannousDotNet, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2yes, but you can take action and recycle them yourself. use it around the house, use it in the garden, just dont trash it!
- linagee, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2Apple != their RMA department. Everyone outsources.
- TreatsTheBear, on 10/11/2008, -1/+3Apple Ships New iPhone Charger Box That is Somewhat Larger Than Necessary
Fixed. - Junior612, on 10/11/2008, -2/+4You should boycott barley and leave all the beer for me
- nosecohn, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1I meant four PLUS packing. I bought a new one later and the box was less than half the size of the one the refurbished unit came in.
