Apple Reveals iPhone SDK
gizmodo.com — Today at a town-hall meeting at Apple's Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino, Steve Jobs showed off the iPhone software developer's kit for the first time. There has been a lot of speculation about what the kit would include, and what it specifically wouldn't. Now Steve Jobs says it will have the same APIs and Tools that Apple itself uses to develop..

- kashk5, on 03/07/2008, -4/+20Hey now, the phones themselves can be pretty nice. It's just the software that sucks
- Mier, on 03/07/2008, -9/+2Yeah they were there first and isn't that interesting that Apple had to license ActiveSync from MS. Probably because they knew there was no way in hell to scratch blackberry's market share without it. Still big competition from blackberry though, they have tons of apps for their handhelds.
Still I'll probably be picking up an iphone in June when my contract runs out.- r3zonance, on 03/07/2008, -2/+6Not that interesting that Apple had to license ActiveSync from MS.
If you had half a clue, you'd know that ActiveSync is the ONLY officially supported by Microsfot way of interacting with ActiveSync (i.e. all the Windows Mobile devices achieve Exchange support that way).
No enterprise in it's right mind would consider using an unsupported add-on to Exchange, when there is a supported method available. By licensing ActiveSync Apple has taken away another barrier to enterprise adoption, rather than putting a slightly different barrier in place (as would have been the case with a third-party unsupported bolt-on).- Balanced, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1If anything, I'ms urprised there wasn't some sort of 'big announcement' with the ActiveSync release, like that Microsoft has extracted some sort of favors from Apple in return for making the iPhone much more 'business friendly.'

- cyclopean, on 03/07/2008, -1/+6Then get one... I live in NS and I have one. Just buy a locked phone on kijiji and use ziphone to unlock it. It's so easy a monkey could do it.

It wasn't because the server's were too busy, the packets coming back were just getting lost. That's why it would stop instantly when you tried to reload, rather than timing out before the server responds.
- RoxStar1968, on 03/07/2008, -10/+25What? Mac only :-p?
- Heavy, on 03/07/2008, -10/+4Yea sucks big time.. Let hope that the Jailbroken Iphone toolchain will benifit from the official SDk so we that don't have and don't whant an mac can develop for an device we do whant.

- MacParrot, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1It''s Bizarro Digg comments!
- PapaRaboon, on 03/07/2008, -5/+17Emm, well course it's Mac only. The iPhone is a Mac. it runs MacOS X dummy. Why would you want to program a Mac on a Windows box anyway?
Apple are in the business of selling Macs. If making the iPhone SDK Intel based Mac only will encourage a few people to go out and buy a new Intel Mac then that's a good business decision isn't it? Apple aren't a charity you know. If you want to be a developer of the iPhone then stop being a cheapskate and at least buy a Mac Mini. geezuz!!! You could always sign up for the iFund if you have a good idea and a decent dev team.- 9bpm9, on 03/07/2008, -7/+1You know the first iPod's were designed for Mac only? See how long that lasted didn't you?
- danbowden, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Cheapskates can always get a hackint0sh setup on their PC. If their app is good enough maybe the royalties could fund a nice shiny Mac Pro 8 core. Possibly slightly overkill for iphone development ;)
- Audacitor, on 03/07/2008, -1/+2"Why would you want to program a Mac on a Windows box anyway?" Because 90 percent of the world use Windows boxes? I don't like Windows or Microsoft; I think it's a ***** product and bad company, but there could be way more 3rd Party apps coming if there were a Windows version of the SDK.
- MacParrot, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2I don't think iPhone users will have to worry about a dearth of applications because the dev tools are only for Macs. With the release of the SDK and Exchange support, I doubt Apple will have any problems getting to their 10 million sold goal for 08.
Do the math. Let's say you develop an app for the iPhone and want to sell it for $5. Because it's really impossible to predict how many people might buy it, let's go low and say only .1% of available customers buy it (10,000 people). Subtract Apple's 30% and you're left with $35,000. I think developers won't have any problem buying an Intel Mac for a possible return like that. - yabos, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2The developer tools are XCode and Interface builder along with some other Cocoa applications. If you think Apple is going to port all that to Windows you'll be waiting for a long time.
- Balanced, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Also, keep in mind that an intel Mac Mini can run the needed dev tools... So that's a pretty reasonable barrier to entry.
- MacParrot, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2I don't think iPhone users will have to worry about a dearth of applications because the dev tools are only for Macs. With the release of the SDK and Exchange support, I doubt Apple will have any problems getting to their 10 million sold goal for 08.

- ElectroBot, on 03/07/2008, -0/+11Because XCode is Mac OS X only.
Why Intel Mac with OS X 10.5.2+ ? Because that allows them to deal with less issues. Besides, Intel Macs have been available for over 2 years now. You can get a Intel Core Duo (the first Intel Mac other than the Developer machine) 1.86GHz for quite cheap now.
- Heavy, on 03/07/2008, -10/+4Yea sucks big time.. Let hope that the Jailbroken Iphone toolchain will benifit from the official SDk so we that don't have and don't whant an mac can develop for an device we do whant.
- GregR, on 03/07/2008, -2/+24No wonder Apple has been so confident in their insistence they are going to reach the sales target for iPhones. Once the 2.0 upgrade comes out all those business people hampered by the lack of Exchange connectivity will finally be able to buy one.
- kashk5, on 03/07/2008, -2/+7Exactly. I can easily see Apple hitting the 10 million quota by the end of the year with all of those corporate accounts. AT&T must also be pretty happy
- Mier, on 03/07/2008, -6/+1Not if someone develops a VoIP client. If Skype or Vonage build a client for iphone AT&T is going to lose some cash on the fact there are so many wi-fi hotspots.
- GregR, on 03/07/2008, -2/+3It's not if but when someone adds a VOIP client to the iPhone it will only add to the value of the product, so how do you see it being a negative?
- rogerbly, on 03/07/2008, -7/+1the sdk does not support voip
- Balanced, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Wrong, at least according to everything I've read. Apple has said they won't approve apps for the store that use VoIP over the cell conenction... Which still leaves WiFi. And it's the App Store, not the SDK to be technical.
- Balanced, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Does AT&T really lose cash? People using VoIP in a wifi zone are just using a different bandwidth source, but are likely still paying the monthly AT&T fees.

- blackjack75, on 03/07/2008, -3/+1Given how hard it seems to type text on this, I am not sure it would be anything more than a gadget.. unless you just like listening and always answering "OK", "YES".. as they do in Apple's demos... Did you notice they only search for U2 on the store?
- RobotLeAwesome, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1have you used an iPhone for more than 10 minutes? I do admit it takes patience in the beginning - but I can two-thumb type on the thing at a decent pace, it's a pretty accurate system. I'd take the screen real estate over a physical keyboard as long as the software is responsive, and it is.
- xoineg, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1typing on iphone is fast...it is hard at first but once you get to use it for a few days is normal and faster than any other phone (i've had blackberries, treos, and sidekicks) personally i love the auto complete feature cause it remembers all my frequently used words even the ones that are not in english or are slang.

- Seidoger, on 03/07/2008, -2/+1Since the moment it was breaking this morning, they had the time to re-glue it up together by now
- adrianc1982, on 03/07/2008, -5/+23This iphone thing is going way to fast for me, steve is doing updates every month and he is hitting the jackpot, the iphone could morph into a all-in-one device in the future. Really I wasnt going to buy an iphone but he is doing so much that is hard not to want one at this point.
- Audacitor, on 03/07/2008, -1/+7This is no longer going to be an all-in-one device. All-in-one devices typically feature a suite of proprietary apps. Now that developers have the ability to develop virtually anything for the iPhone, it's a small tablet computer now.

- BobOki, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Why? Its free to download.
- Proctor, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Because it's slow as ***** and bogged down like hell.
- P5ycHo, on 03/07/2008, -2/+1And torrents are faster? You Americans really need an infrastructure update. A big one at that.
- VSLOATHE, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2Torrents are indeed faster. The more people on a torrent, the faster it goes. I have some dedicated servers I use to seed torrents to help things along, but if you have your OS right (read: XP must be hacked a bit to allow more connections), you will get a very very fast download from a torrent. I routinely max out my pipe's bandwidth at home on torrents.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1This has nothing to do with infrastructure. It has everything to do with a company's massive connection getting bogged down as it gets slammed by a massive overload of traffic. Servers anywhere in the world can suffer the same fate. Just look at things like servers getting Slashdotted, Farked, or suffering Digg rape. Very weak America slam and a very weak troll.
- P5ycHo, on 03/07/2008, -2/+1And torrents are faster? You Americans really need an infrastructure update. A big one at that.
- Bggnz, on 03/07/2008, -14/+3Yeah,.. but whats this crap about developers having to pay 100dollars for every App they want to distribute. Its looking like im staying Jailbroken, where most of the good apps will be anyway. Jailbreak + SDK = Win
- hadimirza, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8I believe its $99 once if you plan on selling your apps.
- Bggnz, on 03/07/2008, -3/+1Well, that sounds a BIT better. Its still going to keep many developers(im not talking about big companies) away. Who wants to pay $99 dollars to have people download their stuff for free
- notadiggtard, on 03/07/2008, -1/+9Considering there are no bandwidth costs for people to download the app, plus it gets exposure on every iphone/touch out there I would guess more than a few.If they can't handle $99 then their app has got to be ***** anyway.
- Bggnz, on 03/07/2008, -4/+1Perhaps...
- VSLOATHE, on 03/07/2008, -0/+3There's no perhaps about it. Do you know how much it costs to develop for Palm? $450 + $100 yearly for updates to the platform. Not to mention you then need to either do all your own marketing, or pay a site to do it for you. In this case, you pay $100 once, then 30% of your revenue, and you're golden. No marketing required, everything is supported. VERY GOOD DEAL if you're comparison shopping as a dev.
- Protoss, on 03/07/2008, -0/+4Yeah I think this is just a good way to prevent one company from making a lot of $5 dollar apps that do next to nothing, like the Windows Mobile scene has become.
- Kelmon, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1If you want to develop for the iPhone then you're going to pay the fee. For what it gives you as a developer the cost is peanuts and it gets you access to the marketplace where customers will be going for applications. It is entirely possible that the need to use iTunes can be circumvented as a means of application distribution but if your customers aren't interested then there's not much point. Customers can get all their applications from the same place and have confidence that what is available won't cause issues (i.e. no malware or unstable applications).
- notadiggtard, on 03/07/2008, -1/+9Considering there are no bandwidth costs for people to download the app, plus it gets exposure on every iphone/touch out there I would guess more than a few.If they can't handle $99 then their app has got to be ***** anyway.

- GregR, on 03/07/2008, -0/+4Don't know where you got that (mis)information from but the $99 is a one-time fee to be a developer for the iPhone.
- Kelmon, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Not strictly true - the $99 is a fee for distribution via iTunes. You don't need to pay the fee to develop applications but do need to when you want to make them available to the public.
- virtualball, on 03/07/2008, -0/+8To be fair, it's okay when you consider that $99 gets you eternal hosting, infinite bandwidth, a way to make money, and help from Apple professionals...
- hadimirza, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8I believe its $99 once if you plan on selling your apps.
- cannibaljp, on 03/07/2008, -1/+31i have to say that they really exceeded what i thought they were going to do with this.
i'm looking forward to seeing what the developers can do! - djmak, on 03/07/2008, -7/+14 and again the ipod touch update isnt free :(
- GregR, on 03/07/2008, -10/+9Stop whining! It'll be a modest fee that will give you a huge boost in functionality over what you had before.
- notadiggtard, on 03/07/2008, -5/+12Never will be.One last time-the two devices are accounted for differently on the books.Get used to it and get over it.
- wjbp, on 03/07/2008, -0/+4The actual law changed in regards to reporting revenue in a way that makes a company look stupid enough to charge .99 for a software update(Apple again). It's new territory that afflicts Apple quite a bit because they update usability regularly. It's like the law (is it contained within Sarbanes/Oxley) was written by IBM or some other evil beast. It was supposedly a response to the evils of Enron and was notably voted against in the house by 3 counting, you guessed it, Ron fricken Paul.
- kevdude421, on 03/07/2008, -6/+3Once again, I'm happy with my decision to always keep my Touch jailbroken. ***** Apple...I can't GET the iPhone in my country, so you're basically charging me extra for that?
- MacParrot, on 03/07/2008, -1/+3Hmmm, well since you jailbreak your Touch, can't get the iPhone, AND seem to think that Apple sucks, you wouldn't be paying a dime anyway.
Stop whining
- MacParrot, on 03/07/2008, -1/+3Hmmm, well since you jailbreak your Touch, can't get the iPhone, AND seem to think that Apple sucks, you wouldn't be paying a dime anyway.
- Proctor, on 03/07/2008, -0/+4Uhh...the iPod touch was made to be a media player with touch functions, not a kind of PDA device like the iPhone. The touch could be a PDA like device, but they like to lock down the iPod's :) As Steve said.
- derekivey, on 03/07/2008, -8/+3Dupe.
- Atomic05, on 03/07/2008, -21/+2Ugh, why isn't the iPhone dead yet? You can buy a regular phone, an mp3 player, and just use the internet at home. The upshot to that is you get to not look like a tool and you save hundreds of dollars in initial purchase price alone.
Dig me down if you want, but you know I'm right.- suprbad, on 03/07/2008, -3/+10You don't have an iPhone, do you?
- wjbp, on 03/07/2008, -1/+3Sorry to reply here but the above doesn't have a reply option.
I'm a tech geek who's older than your mom. Used everything and am hyper critical.
The iphone is the best 1st generation devise ever. Long story but the point is, I'm building a side company to use the iphone as a tool for many things. In a year it will be clear. WTF were these phone pros thinking? Out of the gate and one devise scares the status quo to tears. Nokia, Microsoft, name it.
It's funny to see the shills like engadget and here fight it. A riot really. Engadget's sdk chart is a classic.
The iphone will be used for many things and is the best phone/pocket internet devise period.
Try to compete and beat it if you can.
Note to other geeks...
I'll use my primary area of expertise to say that in real high end audio or recording equipment, it does't matter what the features are. Companies like Sanyo and Kenwood take care of the bells and whistles. That is what the iphone objections come down to. It doesn't do yadda. Yadda doesn't mean ***** ok?
It's the whole thing. A really positive user experience coupled with a very powerful devise with upside potential. Get it? I knew that you could....
- wjbp, on 03/07/2008, -1/+3Sorry to reply here but the above doesn't have a reply option.
- virtualball, on 03/07/2008, -2/+8Actually, I know you're wrong. Having the internet wherever you go is a powerful feature. I can give you more then one occasions where I was in a town, just driving through 'course, and I needed to know where a restaurant is. Or, I could check my Digg anywhere. Also, there's the benefit of only needing to carry one device around. I don't believe I look like a tool, especially because I don't flaunt it. Though, you might believe all iPhoners have the trendy messenger bags, stylish but still indie black rimmed glasses and listen to the Shins in their sleep. Well... I'm only one of those three. :)
- VSLOATHE, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2I'm an iPhone user and I don't carry a messenger bag. I wear glasses that Steve Urkel wouldn't be caught wearing in public, and I listen to death metal. Stereotypes are silly.

- NyteStarNyne, on 03/07/2008, -3/+7Atomic05 in the 90's: Ugh, why is this cell telephone taking off? You can use your rotary at home and there is a payphone on every corner for emergencies!
The upshot to that is you get to not look like a tool holding a device that doesn't even have wires, and you'll save a lot of money because payphones are only a quarter. - deadbaby, on 03/07/2008, -2/+7Buy separate devices, "use the internet at home" -- Do you own Palm stock or something?
- bigsteve, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Stop feeding the trolls. They go away.
- suprbad, on 03/07/2008, -3/+10You don't have an iPhone, do you?
- aloser, on 03/07/2008, -2/+12All I want is a good SSH client and I'm sold.
- mockupscaledown, on 03/07/2008, -0/+4And a bash shell...
- mrBitch, on 03/07/2008, -2/+1you can get bash shell on iphone and ipod touch right now, all you need to do is jailbreak it.
- shankarganesh, on 03/07/2008, -3/+6and i want the iPhone in India! (officially, please)
- Wootstapler, on 03/07/2008, -7/+2Kinda late with the article but okay...
- rogerbly, on 03/07/2008, -4/+1perfect!
- joel8x, on 03/07/2008, -1/+20I wonder if there will be a shortage of iPhones soon after the SDK is released. The Exchange integration is a blackberry killer (yes I hate any killer reference, but come on - how many RIM outages in Canada before people say enough already and get an iPhone? And don't forget that browsing the web on a Blackberry is useless). And, can you imagine MMORPG's on your cellphone? Spore looks amazing - I really hope it integrates with the console versions.
- neom, on 03/07/2008, -2/+3Except for the fact that I can't actually SEARCH my email... to me that kills the iPhone as a productivity tool.
- wjbp, on 03/07/2008, -3/+1This site is funny in how I have to reply to the reply to keep it close to the point.
I'm short rimm, you are thinking correctly. Then again you could short almost anything now and win going forward. The times, they are a changing.- Balanced, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Your comment makes very little sense.

- rogerbly, on 03/07/2008, -4/+2i doubt there will be an iphone shortage. many blackberry users I know have already switched to iphone.
- zongamin, on 03/07/2008, -6/+1How about you kill yourself?

- chuckpenzone, on 03/07/2008, -2/+7Phil Schiller has officially lost the right to use the words "amazing" or "incredible" due to overuse.
- unco, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2too true... and what's with that shirt... are they short long sleeves or long short sleeves?
- MioTheGreat, on 03/07/2008, -13/+2But, XCode Only?
Everyone who has _ever_ used Visual Studio is laughing in your general direction, Apple.- nonsequitor, on 03/07/2008, -1/+7Expand your brain, man
- r3zonance, on 03/07/2008, -0/+10I use Visual Studio at work and home, and I'm not laughing. Xcode is the only way because it has the necessary tool set already built into it.
Do you expect Microsoft to ensure you can create Mac OS X apps using Visual Studio? Don't be an idiot.- wjbp, on 03/07/2008, -0/+5He can only be the idiot he is. Microsoft flag waving *****.
- Balanced, on 03/07/2008, -0/+6I've used Visual Studio.... very briefly. I much prefer XCode. I'm an edge case as I'm a student developer, though.
(As to why, XCode has (in my opinion) a more useful UI. It's like the difference between Word and other word processors. VS has a ton of features, but it throws all of them at user at the same time, making the thing kind of a mess. - mrBitch, on 03/07/2008, -0/+5Mio, you obviously have not developed under both VS and XCode. If you had then you would notice how XCode is a much more powerful development platform.
To put it simply: VS is to XCode as a WinMobile OS is to the iPhone OS ( ie: VS is clunky and poorly designed. XCode is sleek and powerful, and incredibly well designed).
- tacojohn, on 03/07/2008, -0/+11Super Monkey Ball looks ***** amazing!
- PurpleSfinx, on 03/07/2008, -0/+15Exellent! Now they just need to RELEASE THE DAMN PHONE IN AUSTRALIA and I'll be all over this!
- tomwhughes, on 03/07/2008, -0/+4hear hear!!....then again, I am amazed at how many iphones I have seen at RMIT University in Melbourne when I've been on campus (I'm a student). I've seen about 10 people with them! But I'm still hanging out for a June/July release for us aussies. Until then my jailbreaked 16GB ipod touch will have to do.
- Proctor, on 03/07/2008, -2/+2Australia has Cell Phone Service?
- BrendanSheehan, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1Buy a jailbroken one today. Unlocking it takes 30 seconds with iJailbreak.
- xtarburst, on 03/07/2008, -1/+1Will it bring regular cell phone bluetooth?
- DaveTehWave, on 03/07/2008, -3/+2RE-F*in-POST!

i can play doom in my n95 8gb and gameboy advance psx emulators- MacParrot, on 03/07/2008, -0/+4If you could buy an iPhone then you get too much in the way of an allowance from your parents. This announcement is MORE than just about games.
- pablo7011, on 03/07/2008, -10/+0Why do you guys post so much about politics? We get enough of that in the media, this is suppose to be a geek site!
- akf2000, on 03/07/2008, -7/+2Games, yeah nice, but they have to be entirely accelerometer based, that's a bit limiting, I like smashing buttons repeatedly. However this is all fantastic news and I was up till late downloading the SDK, make sure you subscribe to the RSS documentation within Xcode.
- NSResponder, on 03/07/2008, -0/+8 they have to be entirely accelerometer based,
No, they don't. The iPhone has this thing called a 'touch screen'. I'm surprised that you haven't heard of it.

- NSResponder, on 03/07/2008, -0/+8 they have to be entirely accelerometer based,
- nixfu, on 03/07/2008, -0/+8Apple really hit it out of the park with this one.....the iPhone is going to have a phenomenal third-party free/pay software eco-system.
- OGla, on 03/07/2008, -1/+11Put World of Warcraft on the iPhone and turn 8 million people into iPhone/WoW zombies forever.
- AdamSee, on 03/07/2008, -1/+1You can check out the BBC iPlayer preview on the iPhone; http://digg.com/apple/BBC_iPlayer_preview_on_iPhon ...

- dalesmatrix, on 03/07/2008, -1/+3I think that a World of Warcraft auction house application would be pretty darn cool. I'm a recovering addict, but when I was playing it would have been very cool to have been able to check on auctions on the go.
- cave, on 03/09/2008, -0/+2Leeroy, is that you?
- sykotic, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1I like how they have limitations to the shop like "bandwidth hogs". This is probably their preemptive way of stopping skype clients for iTouch .
- jirv, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1wow i cant wait for the new update!!!
