- CoreyTamas, on 12/04/2008, -2/+30"As we saw yesterday, the accusations from the BBC, Washington Post, and Cnet saying that Apple was trying to "quietly" recommend antivirus software were false..."
Gizmodo forgot to add "and Gizmodo" in that sentence. - Supernova36, on 12/04/2008, -20/+36Are we mature enough to stop denying macs have no security flaws yet?
- pixeldust, on 12/04/2008, -3/+16Jesus Christ, how many times do we have to hear this same faulty argument. OS 8/9 had a smaller market share percentage and still had viruses, obscurity is not the reason for not needing anti-virus on OS X.
- jakem1, on 12/04/2008, -5/+16I'm an MS user and:
a) I've not had anything to say (at any point) on this topic
b) I couldn't care less if Macs need antivirus or not. - mingistech, on 12/04/2008, -1/+11My mother has been running Norton Anti Virus on her iMac for about 3 years now.
Over the past 3 years Norton has found ZERO viruses.
I finally convinced her that it's time to remove it. - MacParrot, on 12/04/2008, -2/+11No OS is immune from flaws that can be exploited, but the "Security through Obscurity" has been the mantra you guys have been saying ever since OS X 10.3 was out. Any chance you can admit that OS X just has better (not perfect but better) security features out of the box than Windows XP did? Vista is much improved as far as security goes, but it is still more exploitable than OS X and naturally ANY OS can be affected if a user purposely downloads and installs malware (which is why most of them are being targeted now through human engineering like new emoticons or "free" movies and MP3s with a hidden surprise)
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+9I too am sick of this "security through obscurity" lie. You don't have "security through obscurity" when you're installed on millions of machines all over the world. Get a new playbook.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+8LOL LOL LOL. Reformat every 6-9 months? Dang, I used to be just like you. Now I have better things to spend my time doing.
- ilmari, on 12/04/2008, -6/+13OS X is not obscure at all anymore. It's being used by milloins of people, who usually are quite wealthy too, being able to afforf a Mac.
Great target for viruses. But why isn't there even one yet? Maybe because it's just too damn hard to write a functional virus for OS X. - CoreyTamas, on 12/04/2008, -2/+9Every OS has security flaws and their own ways of dealing with them. The thing is, some operating systems have armed guards at every entryway who stop and question all those who attempt to enter. Other operating systems eschew guards and locks for a hand-written note taped to an open door which says "Please don't come in and stuff."
- CoreyTamas, on 12/04/2008, -3/+10I needed a calculator to manage the double-negatives in that statement.
- bigsteve, on 12/04/2008, -1/+7Nowadays, I can't tell if people are trolling this "security through obscurity" line, or if they're really that ignorant.
- utnow, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6You're on the right track, but to get through to the Digg-zombies you have to appeal to their inner geek. The better way to phrase that is: "Maybe because it's just too damn hard to write a functional virus for unix". ;)
- Heilige, on 12/04/2008, -8/+13I'm glad Apple made this statement because too many people think that the reason OS X doesn't get viruses is because it is not popular enough or not a big enough target (which isn't true these days).
You can be using AntiVirus software on Windows and _still_ be vulnerable, so you will always no matter what have some level of vulnerability. But as for OS X, the system has built in "anti-malware" features and architecture and just does not _need_ antivirus software. - bigsteve, on 12/04/2008, -2/+6I'm not really unsure that anyone who wasn't mentally handicapped ever thought that in the first place.
- ilmari, on 12/04/2008, -10/+14After 3+ years of using OS X I feel that it's kind of absurd to have to use an external software to protect a modern operating system.
Anti Virus software sounds like 90's to me.
Do people use AV software on Ubuntu too, or is it just a Windows thing now? - ragingflamerboy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4No Heil. it's the retards that think the lil' blue E is the internet!!!!oneoneone111o0
- I don't do anything that needs malware protection.
i've never had a virus.
ever.
and I have a lot of p0rn. - eadnams, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4Surfing habits dictate a lot of whether or not you need protection.
- samadam, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4Aye, there are fundamentally safer things going on on Macs. Things like not allowing hidden EXEs to be easily downloaded as screensavers...or allowing software to quickstart from CDs, and using a program install method that stops the software from installing into various parts of the OS.
- ragingflamerboy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4no Heil, again you're stupid, retarded, and I'm guessing single.
Malware isn't from a vulnerability in your OS.
it's 'CHECK WHO DELETED YOU ON MSN!'
it's 'HEY LOOK AT THESE SMILES, DOWNLOAD NOW!'
OR
it's 'HERE'S A 9/11 SCREENSAVER.EXE! DOWNLOAD NOW AND REMEMBER FOREVVVVVVERRR!'. - akula89, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3pretty sure a large chunk of digg users do not use anti-virus on their XP machines. I don't.
- Slizzo, on 12/04/2008, -2/+5I don't use Anti-virus on my Vista SP1 box. Then again, I'm not your average Windows user.
Either way, most users *should* have anti-virus running on their machine, no matter what OS you're running. - Ouze, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4You keep saying that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/spouting
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sproutin ... - Chunken, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3No security flaws? There have been known security holes in OSX that Apple knew about for 6 months before bothering to patch it. It would be more accurate to say nobody is exploiting those flaws. Claiming there are NO flaws is completely ridiculous. Not a single operating system exists with no flaws.
- rimantas, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Yes, OS X is vulnerable to attacks.
No, there are no viruses for OS X. - mbarker2, on 12/04/2008, -3/+6You can't count to 1?
- MacParrot, on 12/04/2008, -2/+4@Heillge
I think most of the people on Digg understand the difference between a computer virus (mostly described by the definition you used) and malware which requires the user to actually install it and bypass basic security.
As far as Viruses go, there have been very few that I know of since Vista was released. Microsoft stepped up their game in that regards and I salute them for doing so. - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2In addition nearly every single one of those macs has no AV, so you would think some ***** would have written at least one virus to screw us already.
- james6, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Hmmm Precisely. Then you would not be who the comment was aimed at.
- CoreyTamas, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3"Are we mature enough to stop (negative qualifier) denying (another one) macs have no (and there's three) security flaws yet?"
Not a big deal, though. My comment was just meant as hyperbole and in jest. Cheers. - crgnetworks, on 12/04/2008, -8/+10Dear vilago,
I'm not sure if anyone has brought this to your attention as of yet, but i'd like to inform you that you're a tool. - ftx437, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3I have been running norton on my pc since i have owned my own and It's never found any either..Just depends on you level of knowledge and whether or not you don't do anything stupid.
- pyrates, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3The only reason why Apple removed it is because it contradicted their ads and that gives them bad PR. Nothing to do with needing or not needing anti-virus on OS X. It just made them look bad and this is typical Apple where they care more about their reputation then the security of their users or functionality of their products.
- UltraMegaFilms, on 12/04/2008, -2/+4Aight, no Mac bashing. They are not all mentally handicapped!
- Zippo, on 12/04/2008, -2/+4LOL... Maybe if you used your brain a bit more... and maybe some AV software... you wouldn't have to reformat that often.
- Heilige, on 12/04/2008, -3/+4You need to realize that when people start thinking they won't get viruses because they are not "stupid" they will actually get viruses. Windows users who think they don't get malware because they are smart and don't need AV software are the ones who get infected with viruses and worms which in turn automatically spam me via MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger etc.
- tomis, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1This is like arguing for or against Britney Spears shaving her head, instead of the merits of the Iraq war.
One event doesn't actually affect us, the other does. But it doesn't matter. The facts are still the same.
Vista is still Vista. Linux is still Linux. OSX is still OSX. So STFU about it. Find the OS that fits your needs and be happy. - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2And exactly what would those AV programs be scanning for? WINDOWS viruses, because there aren't any mac ones you tool.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2Don't be ***** stupid. There are millions of macs out there, most of which have no AV protection. If what you say is true some clever bastard would have written an virus and ***** over at least a tiny percentage of those macs.
- inactive, on 12/08/2008, -0/+1It totally disagree norman - there is no kudos to be gained from creating yet another windows virus. Imagine being the first hacker to create an OS X virus....
- norman619, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1See my response to your dup comment above.
- dperren, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2Brilliant - aside from the fact that I've been using Windows bareback for the last ten years without a single issue.
- Heilige, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2Very good analogy, lol
- Chiphort, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1I don't know, because I had viruses in system 7 and mac os 8.
They were not unix based, and had an even lower market-share.
However there have been no viruses in X, there has been other things, but no viruses. - Chiphort, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1last time I checked, there has never been a virus, just worms. I have used the antivirus to remove a DNS changer once.
- james6, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Haha bet if i'd done this a few years ago would have got Dugg down a hell of a lot more, just shows how Mac users are increasing.
- Slizzo, on 12/04/2008, -5/+6Quit sprouting this nonsense. Windows XP and Vista have built in anti-malware software as well.
Your OSX, no matter how much you want to think otherwise, is *still* vulnerable to attacks even after all of your anti-malware software. No OS is invulnerable. I only hope you fall into your own trap soon so you actually WILL stop sprouting this nonsense. - Enlightenment, on 12/07/2008, -0/+1Introducing the NEW Apple Product...now with MORE SMUG!!!!
Funny Apple Spoof on Simpsons...this is great!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZGIn9bpALo - JTMON, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Yah whatever Zippo,
Last I checked, today, there was one virus for OS X. But please, show me one that can infect BOTH operating systems as if they are remotely close to being coded the same. It would be something like a double virus which would need coding for both OS's. -
