Apple Removes Ability to Install iTunes on Windows x64 with version 6.05
flickr.com — See for yourself, Apple seems to have decided those of us that use the x64 version of Windows are no longer worthy of installing the latest version of their iTunes software.

- NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How about filing a bug report instead of getting snotty about it?
-jcr - Pliep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How come you decide that "Apple removes the ability" rather than it being some stupid problem on your own lame Windows machine?
- Angrydna, on 05/08/2008, -0/+0How bout people that bought windows xp64 were told that it was the new windows to support the new cpu standard- then after being duped into buying it no one supports it. There machine isn't lame- but maybe you are.
- sarcotic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1actually, microsoft broke itunes... one of their windows updates broke both itunes and quicktime.
you'll find, if you run a windows update, your existing versions will stop working.
apple, simply put a stop in the installation to prevent people from trying to install a piece of software that no longer works...
presumably, microsoft patched some "security hole" which seems to have only affected their competitors software--how unlike them...
anyway, hopefully apple will run a build for x64 soon enough.- sp4rky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not what i've read, it has to do with the newest version of itunes. apparently old versions installed just fine.
- Anisty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, the old version of iTunes stopped working as well for anyone who had it currently installed. Windows update appears to have prohibited it from being useful anymore... not that windows update has ever been much use either.
The new version of iTunes (6.0.5) will not install on an x64 machine - so it is in fact a collaboration to break iTunes on x64 together... it's nice to see Apple and Microsoft working so hard together for once. - Celerex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have every single windows update installed for x64 and I am still able to run my iTunes 6.0.4.2. I am of course unable to install the new 6.0.5. I agree that this is a windows issue as the installer invokes the Windows Installer process. Typical for Microsoft to block a competitor’s product.
- carbontwelve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its nothing to do with windows blocking apple :| and its ignorant to say so.
its most probably due to apple writing device drivers for the new build that will not work under x64, and i am sure they will bring out another update that will work soon.
Prior versions work under x64, abiet with bugs. you can get them here: http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.htm

- madmaxjnsn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+06.0.4.2 still works (Sort of). It will update for the pod-casts and play lists that I have selected. The issue for me is that if I try to check a new play list or pod-cast in my preferences, when it writes that change to my iPOD I get an error.
I guess they are just trying to find more ways to bread more hackers. - eyebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used Quicktime 7.0.4 and iTunes 6.0 on my XP x64 system. It would be nice if Microsoft or Apple, or whoever is really at fault for this... would fix the issue. I should think it in the best interest of Apple (and their partners in crime) to make sure iTunes works for as many people as possible.

ftp://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/apple/iTunes/iTunesSetup_6.0_WIN2KXP.exe - hexydes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iTunes 7 seems to have fixed the issue for installing and using iTunes on Windows XP x64 Edition.
If this ever happens again, try YamiPod, which helped me through this tough period. Or hell, try YamiPod anyway, as it is great software that never stopped working.- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the update
I can update itunes now.....finally
