- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -12/+58Oh, no, here come the jealous PC bitches. Let's get it over with. Overpriced, smug, gay, trendy, iTards, Starbucks.
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -2/+24Uh, this is an update to Leopard, not Snow Leopard.
- dullnation, on 03/24/2009, -2/+19it's just a point release, why bother?
- GoldenChaos, on 03/24/2009, -0/+14LOL
I wrote mine backwards. - Zippo, on 03/24/2009, -0/+11Well, the guy who recently hacked Safari is collaborating with Apple to fix the hole and the exploit can't be released publicly until he does... so yeah, a more secure Safari is on the way.
- JakeW, on 03/24/2009, -2/+11Burying for bitching about a story that you DIDN'T have to come and read.
- digitalpencil, on 03/24/2009, -1/+9you forgot to mention something about stroking Steve Jobs' balls whilst sipping a Starbucks latte..
on a side note, this isn't really news.. we all know SL is around the corner, the frequency of service-packs further indicates this yes, but this revelation alone is hardly worthy of its own article.. buried. - Warom, on 03/24/2009, -1/+9LOL
- TVarmy, on 03/24/2009, -1/+9This is like a service pack. It's meant to patch problems and add a few tweaks and features. It's not really a new OS in the sense that Windows 7 is a new OS.
Snow Leopard would have a better case, but Apple is the type of company that likes monumental releases (ie nobody but developers and pirates have tried it before release) over releases where the product slowly trickles out in various levels of development. - Aphelion, on 03/24/2009, -1/+8LOL
- seltaeb4, on 03/24/2009, -0/+6Supposedly they're aiming for June or so with 10.6.
- TVarmy, on 03/24/2009, -0/+6The developers are getting to use it, RTFA. If you desperately need it, look on a torrent site for it.
- TVarmy, on 03/24/2009, -0/+6Apple traditionally lets you buy the OS update online for about $10 if you buy the computer within 30 days of the update coming out. I'd say wait until July or the release to buy your next computer, whichever comes first.
Oh, and if you buy just after the update, there's a good chance they're going to just give you the OS for free but the computer will have the old OS installed. In that case, you'll want to "archive and install," as "update" is somewhat unreliable, and "Clean Install" will remove iLife, which you'll need to reinstall from the discs that came with the computer. - pak314, on 03/24/2009, -2/+7Any idea when the next full OS release is coming out? I was thinking of buying a mac and would rather wait if it is coming in the next 6 months.
- icirrus, on 03/24/2009, -3/+8Good to hear. Anyone for more secure Safari?
- mjpwall, on 03/25/2009, -0/+4it's a point release, free.
idiot - inactive, on 03/24/2009, -2/+6I seriously don't care what any of thinks. LOLing at you from my MacBook Pro. I know you're jealous.
- rimantas, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4@Kyan: I dug your comment backwards (:
- TVarmy, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4I've noticed Leopard got more stable with each 10.5.x release, to the point that now it's as solid if not more so than OSX Tiger was. This release seems to be providing a lot of major fixes, tweaks, and driver updates.
Still, I don't know if this is news, really. It's just another incremental early build. - PoopOnPaul, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4I just want them to give us back the ability to change the energy saver profile from the menu bar.
- dullnation, on 03/24/2009, -1/+5LOL
- Kyan, on 03/24/2009, -2/+6ГОГ
- KSUdesigner, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4Update was unreliable for 10.5, but I'd hope they've fixed that with 10.6.
- rstrube, on 03/24/2009, -1/+5Amen... Apple definitely needs to step it up on the browser security front. OS X is an awesome OS, its a shame that the default web browser appears to be relatively easy to hack.
- meathead, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4Now who's whiny....
- pigeonmeister, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4stfu
- MrChunks, on 03/24/2009, -2/+5No, your words.
- rebotfc, on 03/24/2009, -1/+4LOL
If you haven't figured it out we're not laughing with you. - Capand, on 03/24/2009, -1/+4...and most people did, hence the Mac-user growth in recent years.
- MacParrot, on 03/24/2009, -0/+3I must admit I was completely wrong. Stupid IS a good look for you.
- MrChunks, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2@mdhensley5, you clearly don't otherwise you'd not make inane statements like you did.
- AngelBunny, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2depends what OS you're on. In windows apps have root privilege by default but in nearly everything else apps do not. In other words, if you're on OSX and safari has a hole you still can't get a virus since safari doesn't have access to your system.
A hole would have to be found in Safari AND OSX for it to be insecure for mac users. - wisedude, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2I wonder how far it would be dugg up if I submitted a story about microsoft TESTING a patch
- alexra, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2windows is pretty good, if your using it on a mac
- AngryChris, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2And the dollar sign goes in front of the number:
"$129"
So sad. :-( - AngelBunny, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2ႨoႨ
- melonade, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2Yeah... you failed. Sorry dear
- melonade, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2LOLing with you.
- bigsteve, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1Update from 10.4 to 10.5 only hit a few snags with some 3rd party software. That said, I never use the update OS function on any platform, Mac, Windows, anything. Starting fresh is nice, especially with a new OS. Helps flesh out inconsistencies and bugs should any arise.
- AngelBunny, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1Depending on what you want to do there are programs like caffeine and insomniaX.
caffeine disables any screen fading, screensavers, ... anything with the push of a button and then back to your default settings the same way. - bigsteve, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1People see my car and say "wow, nice car." They don't say "why'd you buy that, a Ford Taurus gets you from A to B just the same." So why do people get so heated when they see what laptop I'm using? I don't get it.
- AngelBunny, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1yes but you're talking about a trojan. What is the point of finding a hole to exploit only to have it end up being a trojan? Why not skip the hole step and just have a trojan from the beginning in that case?
- techdever, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1GTFO LOL
- AngelBunny, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1"your OS doesn't worth that money..." are you a redneck?
.... actually with all the CAPS YOU MUST BE A LITTLE ***** KID or you act like one.
one) you don't know what you're talking about
two) if it bothers you so much use an embedded lower level OS for everything ffs. solder on the chips that you want, upload a kernel you like lik vxworks (oh wait, you'd probably end up with linux), if it doesn't come with tools like gcc and some sort of shell install that with the kernel, also install some sort of ethernet drivers or write your own, then finally download and compile the software you want to run on your computer. if you don't like it then write something better for that setup. problem solved, unless you're so lazy that is. - solefald, on 03/24/2009, -0/+1this is HUGE news, especially for me. And i am VERY impressed with Apple engineers releasing this update 2 days after i submitted a bug report detailing a problem that has been bugging me since the day i got my Unibody MBP, with a fix for this very problem! (i mean i'd like to think its because of me, but in any case i am happy to see the fix!)
there was some kind of bug which caused my MBP wake up in my backpack 3 min after i put it to sleep and put into my backpack. - sybersnake, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1Thank god, maybe they've fixed the thing where the Debug Flash Player crashes Safari 10x a day. I'd like to think my 10,000 crash reports actually mean something, LOL.
- AngelBunny, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1you might want to work on your english. it obviously isn't your first language.
- bigsteve, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1This is correct, but keep in mind the malware -would- have access to your home folder. Proper backups (like TimeMachine) should mitigate any real damage there.
Also, with an exploit complex enough, a password box could be called and if the user isn't paying attention and just enters their password without thinking, they might unintentionally authenticate the malware as root. But that could happen on any Unix or Unix-like OS... the weakest point in any desktop OS's armor is the fool at the keyboard. This of course would only work if the user had administrator rights, so if a guest on your machine is set to limited rights, even authenticated malware wouldn't get far. User management is key. - AngelBunny, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1actually unraveling loops is one of the most efficient things a programmer can do when it comes to SMP code and since this is what 10.6 is all about it isn't far from the tree. Optimizing loops can have about a 20% speed increase when done right in certain situations.
- Yage2006, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1First of all. The $ sign goes in Steve's wallet.
Secondly you missed the /Sarcasm I was not being serious.
But wow are you apple fanboys sensitive. -
