- Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+91I still prefer the 15". Any laptop that can double as a riot shield is stretching the limits of what I call 'portable' :-)

FIREWIRE 800 IS BACK - wmoisis, on 10/12/2007, -8/+58So what are you going to do? Take it back?!?!
Of course a 17" model was going to come out. Geez, I'm sick of all you people whining about newer products because you bought yours earlier. Get over it. - moisie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+49I would have thought it rather obvious they were going to release a 17" it was more a question of when.
- moisie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+46Interesting... it has a firewire 800
- 500freestyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34Wait, I'm confused.... if I configure a 15 inch to the same specs as the 17 inch one the 17 inch one is cheaper.
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -14/+45"Apple have just released the 17" model of there Macbook Pro" < learn some proper grammar.. it's: "their".
- NV0U, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Totally agree... and I have a 17" PB G4. It is like carrying around a pizza box.
That does not mean that I don't love it though... - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Of course they know when new products come out, Steve buys all the employees some apple juice and goes through in detail every single apple product they are developing without worrying about leaks because he trusts every single retail employee.

> Holy CRAP - either way that's one friggin expensive machine by today's standards.
WRONG!
Compare it for example to Toshiba's new 17" Satellite P105-S921. At $1,999 its the same price as the new MacBook Pro and has a larger (but slower) 160GB 4200 rpm drive; it has the same 1GB memory, the same 256MB VRAM and dual-layer drive. One less firewire port (1) and one more USB port (4).
But it only has a T2400 1.83GHz cpu, and it weighs more: Starting at 7.1lb .vs. 6.8lb. It's also a lot thicker. I can't work out if its 1.4" or 1.61" from the specs (its a bit confusing) .vs. 1" for the MacBook.
So the 17" MacBook is actually better value for money due to fact it looks nicer, is thinner, is lighter, and has a much faster CPU ! - aceworld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Excellent. Things are going exactly as planned.
Step 1. The 17' MacBook is Released.
Step 2. Sell a kidney to be able to afford the MacBook. ;-) - Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30you know there hasnt been a (popular) story ive submited to digg where someone hasnt commented on my spelling or grammar, English is NOT my first lingo so in my opinion i'm doing preaty well :) An YES i am an aussie :) thanks for noticing :)
- vatchea, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24did you buy a Powerbook G4 in december?
...someone sounds bitter. - neondiet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20
I just noticed this too. The 17" default package comes with a 2.16Ghz cpu, 1GB RAM, a 120GB 5400 rpm drive and 256MB vram and is showing at $2,799 (£1,999 in the UK).
But if you go look at the 15", select it and increase the options to the same spec, the price comes to $2,899 (£2,059 in the UK).
So the 17" is cheaper than the 15" ... huh ?? - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26"What do you mean dirty Brit/Aussie?"
In America, a corporation is referred to as a single entity: "Apple has done something cool today".
In Austrailian and British English, a corporation is refered to as a collective entity: "Apple have done something cool today". - moisie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22No-one said there wasn't a 17" coming out soon either, Apple never says anything. Apple store employees don't get told anything either. I think they've said they reckon the intel switch will be complete by the end of the year though so it was never gonna be that long.
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22/me prays for a 12/13 inch.
- LordVoldemort, on 10/12/2007, -12/+30What's the point? The text would be too tiny. Moreover, LCD's with a high natural resolution look like crap at lower resolutions. It's a very purposeful design choice that Apple keeps making; lower is better, and I would say that 1680x1050 is getting too big. Meanwhile, Dell can keep advertising bigger better faster, cause that's what consumers apparently like.... big numbers.
- CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22I've got some spam that claims to be able to help in such situations. Would you like me to forward it to you?
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21When a hot story comes out that you know every one is going to submit to Digg you have to sacrifice grammar and spelling checks in order to be the first person to get their story submitted and thus be the one who makes it to the front page.

Mac isn't as overpriced as you think. You can't compare it to Dell's consumer line. - Niteryd3r, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20It's obvious you dont know much about Macs.
- navvvv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15how much is a dell laptop of comparable size and spec?
I bet its a similar price. oh and an ugly hunk of *****. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I have an ummmmm friend, yea that's it, who works for Apple (not an Apple Retail Store). And he literally knows **after** alot of Apple fan boys do. One of the few things Apple has going for it is secrecy. And any **good** Apple employee knows that, and relishes in the fact that Apple's products _nearly_ always hit the market when people are unaware.
So asking for upcoming products from an Apple employee is futile, for those employees who know won't tell you, and the employees who don't know, well, don't know. - betasp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1610% Apple tax. For it you get better design, smaller size and sometimes faster product.

///Use a 12" Powerbook - JayClark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15A retail employee trying to talk you into buying the computer you're looking at rather than waiting an unknown amount of time for an updated product. Imagine that...
- DocDEB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13In the U.S. store:
17" with 2GB RAM + AppleCare = $3448.00
15" with 2GB RAM + 120 GB SATA + AppleCare = $3548
The 17" has 8X SuperDrive, 3 USB 2 ports, FW 400 and 800 ports v the 15" with 4X SuperDrive,2 USB 2 ports and FW 400 only.
Even if there is a $100-$200 price drop in the 15" you still come up short in the ports and SuperDrive department. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Only the highest end model, which makes sense because the only people who really /need/ FW800 at the moment are film makers with high transfer speed cameras (and most likely can afford a completely tricked out MacBook Pro). However, the nice addition really is the 8x SuperDrive is back on the top-end model.
I guess it was worth it to them to add another chip if they can charge more for it. - cypherz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+111/3rd native speed? WTF? Try "nearly native". The only real speed diff comes from using the windowed mode. Full screen emulation is so fast that you'll have a real hard time telling if its VM or bare metal. I've been using emulation for a long time under Linux and Windows. There's hardly any loss of speed at all with moderm VMM's. I write Windows and Unix software for a living. A MBP could handily replace all my current development machines! As far as games go, yes games might be slow in VM. Who cares? Most high end Macs are owned by professionals who make money with the machine. MBPs are serious machines for real computerists. Flame me all you want. You know I'm right!
- KilgoreCarp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+917 foot macbook... holy *****!
- aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10A dell similarly speced out (specifically a precision mobile workstation that I configured) was actually more than the macbook pro when you selected 2X512MB ram in the macbook pro (there is no single dimm option in the dell, so this is a more fair comparison). The prices were $2699 for the macbook and $2785 for the precision. The only thing that could possibly be different is the display. They didn't say what resolutions the dell was, so I picked the more expensive one, assuming that that would probably be more like the macbook's. Even without that, though, the prices would still be comparable.
Oh yeah.... and the precision wouldn't be quite as capable, either- there was no option for a dual layer dvd burner and I sure that there is no firewire 800, as well as the many other nice things about the macbook pro. - aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"I'm pretty sure the Quadro video card kicks the x1600's ass all over the place."
Not necisarily. It is a good graphics card, but it is for pro workstation situations such as 3d rendering and CAD. I don't believe it would be significantly better than the x1600 for most situations. - breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Supply and demand is what justifies the price. Because of the tremendous backed up demand for this product I'm sure Apple will have no troubling selling every single laptop at this price that their plants can supply. After the a few months the demand wont be quite as strong as it is now and there will either be a price cut or a feature bump.
- feylanks, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12maybe they aren't "normal" laptops
- JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10It seems like most people doing these comparisions don't care about the weight or thickness of a laptop. The 17" macbook pro weighs in at 6.8 lbs and 1" thick while the dv8000t weighs 8.1 lbs and is 1.8 " thick. It has a lower screen resolution as well at 1440 X 900. Also, HP is one of (if not the) WORST computer manufacturer when it comes to installing tons of bloatware that 1) you will never use and 2) slows down your system nicely. A fresh install of windows is a must with an HP.

- cypherz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11How can you let your wife drive a winders machine?! Don't you love her?! :-p
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9thats because they mass produce the base models in higher numbers. If you alter the 15" then its not the base model that they are making millions of. Come on this is basic mass production, they are pumping out the basic models as fast as possible right now.
- Topslakr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Anyone else notice the dual-layer DVD burner? I hope they update the 15" to include that in the next few weeks.....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9the scoop on the XPS... it IS really ugly.
The XPS is missing a camera, iLife (or anything like it), good exterior design, ability to tri-boot...
The XPS has over MBP, weight, thickness, 7200 RMP drive, and in my opinion a slightly better VideoCard

TOTAL:$3,344.00 - josephacote, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm just glad Apple finally came to their senses and put the firewire 800 back in!
And to all those people who bitch about price, seriously, look at it this way, with an education discount (which anyone can get) You can get the 17'' MBP with an upgraded 2GB memory, for under 2,900. Who else is offering a dual core processor lap top with a 256 MB video card, not to mention the incredible resolution on an incredibly sleek machine for under 3,000? Oh yeah... no one. - ericrolph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The price is for an excellent operating system and a tremendous suite of software if hobby photo, music and movie production are your thing; not to mention an overall superb design with attention to the very smallest detail. It's a given there are plenty of people who could care less about how the screws line up in proportion to another and the rest of the machine, but for some it's the difference between excellence and "good enough" which plenty of people are happy to pay for.

> Compare it for example to Toshiba's new 17" Satellite P105-S921. At $1,999 its the same price
Whoops! Sorry folks I should learn to read what's actually in front of me, not what I thought was in front of me. The 17" Toshiba is $1,999 and the 17" MacBook Pro is $2,799 so there's quite a difference in price. I'm from the UK, so I was thinking of the £1,999 UK price which is where I got confused.
However, as someone else has pointed out further down, an identically spec'd Dell is almost the same price as the MacBook Pro, so I guess Toshiba deserve credit for setting the bar so low.
