- pierrefilms, on 10/12/2007, -4/+69And just to remind the uniformed out there, THIS is what is considered a SERVICE PACK, in the Mac world. Please stop saying that Mac users pay for their service packs when it is not true.
Service Packs for Windows are supposed to fix security issues and boost performance. Same on the Mac side.
Major releases like Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 and soon 10.5 are not Service Packs as they release major new features like Exposé, Dashboard, Spotlight, etc. If that is what was considered a service pack, then that would honestly make Vista a long overdue service pack as it is introducing its own 'spotlight' and "gadgets". But it wont be a free download. You will have to pay for it just like when you pay $99 or $129 to upgrade Mac OS X.
This is just FYI since EVERY TIME we have a major release there is some idiot that says that us Mac users have to pay for our 'Service Packs'. We don't. We just don't have major releases ever 7 years. - JBSherman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34The update includes enhancements to AFP, DVD Player, Graphics as well as Graphics applications, iCal, iPhoto, Mail, OpenType fonts, Modem usage, Networking, Printing, Safari, and USB support.
- xtr3m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Nothing better than the feeling of being current.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -16/+39fishbert, 10.4.8 is OS X Tiger, update 8. Don't be a ***** dumbass, and speak out on something you know nothing about. What does that have to do with programmers anyway? Anyone who read your comment is now dumber.
Is this also the same fishbert on the BSS boards? - JuyLe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I personally don't like updates since you have to restart your computer, and I only restart it for updates, every month or so, depends.
- bill679, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18wtf does that have to do with the latest tiger release?
- Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The 10.4.8 Update is recommended for all users and includes general operating system fixes, as well as specific fixes for the following applications and technologies:
- connecting to wireless networks using the EAP-FAST protocol
- Apple USB modem reliability
- using OpenType fonts in Microsoft Word
- compatibility with 3rd party USB hubs
- scanner performance
- RAW camera support
- printing documents with Asian language names
- performance of the Translation widget
- broadband network performance
- security updates

The update is 147mb - zenmouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Finally that translation widget will work!
- jtjdt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"Improves the accuracy of Rosetta numerics and addresses Altivec translation issues on Intel-based Macs."
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Another update! I love updates!
- thermus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Full list of enhancements: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304200
- redrighthand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8it just came out
- gidd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It would have been better if this story linked to the main Apple download page (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/) or the Universal update (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxserver1048updateuniversal.html) rather than the Intel-specific build.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Um...maybe that just happened to you, Toast 7.1 works fine for me.
- merr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I think the update comes in two different sizes, one for PPC and one for Intel. It's 147 MB for my Intel Mac.
- rcorrino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9If your mac-mini sucks ass I would gladly take it off your hands.... just send it over my way......
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15You should try Fedora Linux if you love updates, lol. Daily update goodies.
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Also adds additional RAW camera support to go along with the Aperture 1.5 update.
- reklus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"the MANOR in which it which it was said" ???
How the hell did you figure out that he lived in a Manor?
*****. No wonder he thinks his mac mini sucks...when he's used to using the Batcomputer!!! - NV0U, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Sheesh... I just got iWork and iLife updates about 3 hours ago... my net connection is sure busy today!
- Buschaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Just installed on my Core Duo iMac. Everything seems to be just fine and dandy.
- seanthepatrick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Lies, lies lies lies..
- ductions, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6211mb here.
- Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Improves the accuracy of Rosetta numerics and addresses Altivec translation issues on Intel-based Macs."
Think that's all you're getting :/ - DPowers08, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Is the Front Row hack still working for everyone after installing the update?
- mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6mine was only 22.3. weird. G5 iMac.
- M4cb0y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There's a new "close" option for right clicking on the minimized windows.. about time ^^
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It because the Intel build contains major enhancements to rosetta and seeing as the PPC machines don't need it, the update is smaller (from what i heard at think secret)
Other than that there probably isn't much difference between the two. - pu-z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Jesus, noone boos MS updates. If anything, they come too seldom. Sure, this summer there was some lutzing around them, then we booed. But we also booed when Apple released the external FireWire HDD killer upgrade.
- cmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I own a Macbook and showing the dashboard, expose or any graphic intensive feature was really slow when my 24" Dell monitor was hooked up. 10.4.8 fixes that! It's now very fast, as it's supposed to be. Thanks Apple!
- Gantos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why the difference in the size of the install file?
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25799
"The sizes of software updates can vary for computers running Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later. This is a feature of Software Update, which automatically detects the best update for your computer." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So much for the "massive Rosetta performance boosts" that one of those Apple Rumour sites were talking about.
"Improves the accuracy of Rosetta numerics and addresses Altivec translation issues on Intel-based Macs." - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"can you imagine what insane amount of traffic apple is getting ? Their bandwith bill must be enormeous"
If looking to be impressed, I think one would be even better of researching Google's bills. ;) Or, for other companies, perhaps Akamai's (which I wouldn't be surprised if Apple used) traffic, etc. - davidd009, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Apple said that Aperture 1.5 would be out "later this week" and that was at the beginning of this week, so hopefully that will be out today
been downloading 10.4.8 for awhile now, apple servers are so slow it seems - macgabriel87, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7@ jawadde: we, the consumers, pay apple's bill. everything that apple is was created through the consumers. the consumers keep apple alive. we may pay higher prices sometimes, but at least steve guarantees free keynote webcasts, and you know how expensive that bandwidth gets.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There's an updated version of rosetta so all the PowerPC user's won't be getting a large size.
- M4cb0y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, and do NOT try reenabling it.. I just did and it wasn't fun.. (kept getting stuck at a blue screen at startup.. kinda ironic since this is a mac :P)
"everyone else:
10.4.8 breaks the front row enabler. Andrew is working on it. don’t try to use the enabler to “enable” front row on your 10.4.8 system files. It will break."
http://andrewescobar.com/frontrow - trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had to see for myself the improvements in Rosetta so I'll post up my results using Xbench (Using a Mac Mini 1.66Ghz Core Duo):
(This is all from running in Rosetta mode of course.)
10.4.7 the total score was 24.40; for 10.4.8 the score is 25.60.
One of the biggest improvements I see is floating point library CPU test.
10.4.7 was 2.84 Mops/sec and 10.4.8 is 8.15 Mops/sec.
Some other things such as memory fill and sequential uncached write improved. Nothing declined in performance though so that is a good thing. - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Jugulator: they actually do use Akamai.
- omnivector, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You're retarded. Really. Go troll somewhere else
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13Any problems anyone?
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My only question is why the update is 22.3MB on my PPC mini, and 211MB on my new MacBook. wtf? I understand how fat binaries work, but I don't understand how adding PPC and Intel (even with 32 and 64 bit versions of each) into one package can multiply the size by 10. Is there something I'm missing about how they package their Intel software?
- M4cb0y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's odd, it seems to only work on Finder and iTunes ..
- Grimgrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OS X is currently 10.4, also known as Tiger. This update is going from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8.
- blcarson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yay, it fixed my crappy Comcast speeds! I was getting 1 to 2mb, now I'm crusing around 6 again. That's been driving me nuts for the last 6 months.
- dunkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It could be ColorSync - that will change the hue. Maybe it's been reset or something.
Check out the Color tab in your Display Pref Pane. Might be time to calibrate. - SonofMaug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@dlsspy
FTA: "After installing the delta version of this update on an Intel-based Mac, the computer will restart two times--the first restart after installing this update may take several minutes; please allow it to complete. " - meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not something that can be removed - something in the Universal Access system preference triggers it. Driving me bloody nuts.
Cheers though -
