- trebe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Drive sharing, now that's a neat new feature.
- VicHislop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Even better: Multiple drive sharing through the use of a USB hub (or a mixture of printers and drives).
- iching, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Comes with a CD to enable 802.11n on the new apple intel computers
- MikeFromAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -1/+153-port switch but no gigabit Ethernet. The wireless speed is faster than the wired. Kinda limits how seriously you can take it as a NAS server. Still a nice feature though.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Because Apple can reach inside your Core Duo machine and install draft-N hardware? All Core Duo Mac owners (including myself) knew Core 2 Duo was around the corner, and that draft-N wouldn't be far behind. We bought anyway.
- eurleif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I hope it's possible to enable 802.11n support in Macs with the right hardware without buying an Airport Extreme base station.
- mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10more important matters at hand,
they didn't mention a few things, if they mentioned everything the thing would go all day.
I want some more news on leopard - gers4302, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Any rumors on swap out cards for the original Intel Macs? N would be nice in my Macbook Pro Core Duo.
- ez12a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If you hadn't heard, C2D macs like the MBP i'm typing on have been shipping with "disabled" Draft-N cards. Hence the "enabling software" included with the new Airport.
Installing specific D-Link drivers under Boot Camp also enables N. - brianmartin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8$179 and no Gigabit Ethernet? Pass
- bearda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Nope, still draft-n.
- drumnbass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ eurleif -
You're right - Apple should definitely release the update publicly for users of non-Apple 802.11n base-stations... But, even if they don't, you can be sure that the CD will be torrented as soon as it's available. - Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's "it's" - in that context, "It's" - but certainly not "its".
Seriously, sometimes you think you're a spelling-and-grammer nazi, and then a marketing nazi comes along and shows you up, enforcing the spin-speak of his favorite money-grubber.
*sigh* - kyrre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Is that really new? At least the Airport Express had a USB-port when it was released two or three years ago. However I do beleive HD-support is something new (for Apple).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Has 802.11n been standardized yet?
- Rodzirra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm wondering why they didn't make it the same width and depth of the AppleTV... With the 3rd-party HDs which are sure to hit the market with an AirPort Extreme footprint, you'd think that a 500GB HD + AppleTV + Airport Extreme stack would be perfect media hub for the entertainment center... Dang. :(
Still diggin' it, though. I've been craving an Apple network storage solution for months. - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I love it except for the no GigE. And the price. A bit saddened.
- ez12a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It would be unwise to kill the mood by announcing the new Airport.
-also they had to debunk rumors of failing iTunes sales and present new commercials.
"Here's the super hyped up new product of Apple...ooh and here's a new router too. " - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And jolly well *****.
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Doesn't seem overpriced to me. What else would you buy? Crappy Linksys gear? My Linksys router was so bad I just eventually pulled it off my network. It would always crash when I tried to video conference.
- Mirag3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the lack of gigabit is just sad, considering that practically all of their computers (my MBP included) come with gigabit cards standard.
- blakholephysics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Does that mean that it still has all the incompatibility issues that the other draft-N routers experience?
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm wondering why they didn't just incorporate the airport extreme directly into the Apple TV. I'd be willing to pay another $100 if they woulda just incorporated the two into one piece of hardware. It makes sense to do...you need to wirelessly stream the content to the device, which requires some form of wireless networking. Put it all in one little box and it'd be a winner for me.
- iching, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ eyrkeuf
I agree I think they will hopefully have an update to download at least by February when they ship the other product. - bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3blakholephysics, consider the following:
A) Apple's entire line of desktop and laptop PCs come with gigabit ethernet
B) The new AirPort has 802.11n connectivity at 300mbps, but no way to bridge those speeds to the wired network - Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry, but wasn't Apple doing that with AppleTalk back in the early 90's? What'd they drop that ability?
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd be really curious to know what chipset this box uses. Atheros? Intel? Broadcom?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you're desperate you can get an expresscard I suppose.
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes it does. It allows them to go further away from the base station. I've been using a Belkin Pre-N router for awhile now. I don't have anything better than G in any of my devices but it was still a major improvement.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sure it does, it gives you yet another reason to update your outdated machine.
- seanzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's grammar.
*sigh* - leopardhunter, on 02/18/2009, -0/+2Yes, 802.11n is not standardized yet. Thus, the title of this Digg post is incorrect. All of this "802.11n" equipment, whether from Apple or another company, is "draft n" equipment. No one really knows if a given device will be firmware-upgradeable to the final 802.11n spec. Of course, there's a decent chance that it will be, but ultimately you are rolling the dice.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you aren't going to buy it, what the hell do you care what Apple makes? Apple is creating competition in the market. Competition is a GOOD THING. It drives prices down and forces companies to come up with better products. If you don't like Apple, fine don't buy their products, but you definitely want to keep Apple around because they are helping to create competition in the market.
- bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2escapedspecimen, I don't understand what you're rolling your eyes about. Were you expecting a software update to magically upgrade your PowerBook, which is now two generations old? The only reason this works on MacBooks is because they shipped with the "n" hardware from the factory. Said hardware didn't even exist when your PowerBook was manufactured.
- ez12a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I see a router firmware update in the future.
- yabos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The standard isn't even finished yet that's why there's no general update for all Macs that can support it. There's no point because if you bought a draft-n product from another company it probably wouldn't work with Apple's wireless cards without drivers supporting a final standard.
- yabos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, lack of gigabit is strange. Some people are forgetting about how useful it'd be for transfering between a wireless and a wired device.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>Does that mean that it still has all the incompatibility issues that the other draft-N routers experience?
Possibly, but it should work fine with Apple cards. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Only if you take the time to put a third-party firmware on it, it's not.
- derkles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmmm, it is missing something that the old one used to have, an antenna port. No MMCX, MCX, SMA, N-Type, RP-TNC, nothing . . . Guess I'll stay with my Linksys WRT54GL and DD-WRT firmware.
Though I guess I should wait till somebody does a physical disassembly of this router. - Mirag3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are you high?
- smojo12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Routers aren't sexy like the IPhone
- Sethwm2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OMFG "According to both the Airport Extreme specification page and a 802.11 explanation page on Apple's website, it appears that the 802.11n Enabler software will only ship with the Airport Extreme." SOMEONE PLEASE MAKE A TORRENT OF THE SOFTWARE TO ENABLE IT!!!
This is suck and demented the wireless N should have been available when the computers shipped. Just because they wanted to wait until THEY had a wireless N router does not mean no one else makes them. I know that it was not advertised on the box of my MacBook Pro But come the ***** on pay $4.99 to enable something that is already there.... I bet it is something ***** simple also like a value change that turns the N on. And even if they did wait until now to do this it should have been in a routine update!!!! - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually am considering this particularly for the purpose of saving on electricity. I use a NSLU as a server right now, and I could combine it with my base station and use less power overall.
Amazing to see someone else who is very attentive to saving power. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1drlha,
good point-I guess they didn't want to compete with iTV? Or want us to buy both, no doubt ;p - umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, back with our original airport we could share printers, though the airport had to be wired to a computer that was wired to the printer to be able to do it. But as long as you had a desktop and a few laptops you could share the printer fine.
I digg the HD sharing though. - blakholephysics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@fleetskeet
It has a WAN port in the back. I would assume it's a router then. - mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've always gone with assumption is the mother of all *****
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Make that antenna ports, as it's 802.11n.
Also, don't bother sticking with the WRT54GL, there's much better Linux routers out there. -
