- hoyaman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32Plus, additionally, Cingular will overcharge you for data access plans, ignore any complaint you make over the phone, SPAM you with ads for more sevices, randomly sign you up for said services, forcing you to call in a complaint to above stated response.
AND drop your calls, not connect your calls, randomly alert you to voicemail and missed calls that happened apparently, while you looking at your phone and wondering why no one called.
THEN spen more money on an ad campaign stating that it had the opposite of what reality bears out.
So long as the 6 mo. exclusivity expires as soon as my Treo 650 contract with Cngular expires, I might jump on this. Or I might thorugh my Treo at a Cingular store. I'm undecided. - SouthernDigger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20good deal... cingular has sim cards... that means in the first week someone will come out with an unlock hack to open it up to all of us sim users!
later RAZR! - trendy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20king huh? what about all these rumors that never came true?

god the list goes on... - RickTV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12It would make sense for Apple to go with Cingular. Having a GSM enabled phone opens up other markets (like Europe) to them that other carriers can't do. Verizon for instance might be a good service in this country, but in reality their phones don't work overseas. GSM is the leading technology for Cellular Phones and GSM service is in over 140 countries. Verizon has done a bad thing to the Razr's they sell. They have locked out most of the features that make the phone what it is. For example - you can't import your own mp3 ... it has to be their wma format. Also you cannot bluetooth on their Razrs which defeats part of the reason for having these phones. Cingular's GSM phones a fully functional and the service allow you the end user the use the product as it was intended. So if this story is true, you can begin to understand why Apple may have signed with them. Why produce a phone where a cellular company is going lock out the phone basic functions. That wouldn't be prudent business for Apple.
- fowleryo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10What does Verizon have to do with the Chocolate, other than the fact that they sell it? It's an LG design through and through.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15On a similiar note Think Secret also has conclusive evience and concrete evidence that the wide touchscreen iPod will be unveiled in 2006. Why do people still link to these Rumor sites?
- jasondefaoite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If the phone is not released till Q3 2007, those specs will be out of date.
- mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Oh yea, that stinking ugly RAZR... How repulsive..... ...
I can't wait to stick with my motorola v551 - drlog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6When I was last in the US (it was 3 years ago...), you couldn't get pre paid sim cards. I had a tri-band phone but couldn't use it unless I bought a US phone. Its so obvious that the US mobile phone situation is dodgy.
Having said that, the situation in oz inst exactly perfect :) - jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Wow, the USA cellphone market seems to be badly SCREWED.
Oh, and GSM is old. - lemorex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It is not very clever to only take one provider. Take the RAZR for example, it became popular not only because it was sleek, but also because multiple providers carried it.
- perre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Additionally, ThinkSecret reports an agreement btw Apple and Cingular to be an exclusive carrier for it's initial 6 months.
- chrisrad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Wow this is bizzare.
In Australia, we just buy the phones, put our SIM card in and off we go. I'm not aware of any "exclusive" offers to mobile carriers. Plus, most people swap around to different providers with ease anyway. (a lot of networks are prepaid also)
And America doesn't use GSM? Australia does, but most networks/handsets are moving into 3G soon anyway.
Either way, we don't have a Verizon or Cingular here, so I hope the iPhone is available here when it is in the USA! - FinishdLawSkool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The US cellphone market does indeed suck.
The phones available suck, the 3 major service providers regularly rape customers and phones and none of them care about improving services, phone offerings or otherwise. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Not again! Show me the bloody phone. Until I see the phone, these multi-year rumours are just that: rumours.
- rofflcopterr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm not sure how Apple is going to be so secretive of this. I can imagine a few things involving the phone.
1. Apple introduces an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) service, with either prepaid or direct bill service, possibly offering up some sort of content (e.g. iTunes downloads, etc.)
2. Apple sells an "unlocked only" phone to be used with any network running on GSM. Phone is sold within Apple stores AND on network providers' sites and stores. Phone will be featured throughout Cingular and T-Mobile in the US and all over the place in EU.
The only thing I'm wondering about, again, is their level of secrecy. EVERY cell phone has to pass FCC inspection if it is to be released in the US. That means a picture/info will go up on the FCC website. I say good luck to Apple on hoping that it slips past the guys at Engadget Mobile if they do plan on releasing a phone.
One can hope that Apple doesn't follow suit and load the damned thing down (if they do release one) with hideous features like mini-mini camera, silly MP3 playback (how could they with the iPod?) or a slew of other "I don't need that" features. Knowing Apple, they'll turn something that we go "DUH!" to into some cleverly named service or function, reinventing how we think of using phones.
For now, I guess I'll stick to my 5.5G 30GB iPod and a Samsung E870. (Google it.) - alephsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think you'll find that we do have exclusive phones in Australia. Take the SE K608i for example- only available on 3.
And most non-exclusive phones are network locked anyway. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4flag,
You're incorrect. 100% of Apple's products are real. It's the 99% of rumored products as told by sensationalist webhit seeking sites like seekthinkret.com that are fake.
The only recent product I can think of that Apple announced but never made was the original successor to OS 7-8 called Copeland. Lots of screen shots, lots of announcements made over a 5-6 year period and never released as promised. The bits and pieces of what was left was put out as OS 9. Gee, why does that sound so familiar? - neondiet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
To be successful in Europe it will need to support 3G, quad band and Bluetooth; with the ability to transfer songs from iTunes over Bluetooth. To get _my_ interest it will also need to integrate seamlessly with OSX's iPhoto, iCal and AddressBook and become an extension of my MacBook Pro. It would be a bonus if it could double up as a Bluetooth Frontrow control device.
I already own 2 iPod's, so its music support isn't that important to me. - gothicx00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, I'll phonescoop it! http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=990
Must say... nice phone. But who is your provider? That thing sure would look nice next to my Macbook Pro! - liveinabin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thinksecret are consistantly full of crap.
- BWhaler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hate every phone on the market. Either they have a slick design and terrible UI, or vice versa.
I can't wait for the Apple phone. Sure, it won't be perfect. It'll be expensive.
But it's Apple. It will work like it supposed it, in a simple, wonderful way. - McoreD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apple is betting a phone with Apple's iconic design, elegant interface, and iPod-matching functionality will be a strong draw for users who currently carry both devices on them.
Do I need to say it better? Bring it on! Been waiting for a true Apple iPhone for ages. Already have ROKR E1. Thanks. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very sexy phone... no iSync support though?
I'm using Panasonic X800 -- very pretty, and based on Symbian S60 so it works great with iSync. Camera blows, though. - billyliberty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think the big Cingular "Jack" logo ruins any simplicity Apple may have in their phone blueprints. Why would Apple partner with any provider? They don't need the marketing that a partner would provide nor do they need to have their product subsidized by a two year long contract. If anything, Cingular is the old, stodgy company just begging for the help and a unique phone to offer to their (largely purchased) customers. Apple has no reason to help keep their old technology from dying off.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -5/+625 Million phones in a single year? Sounds to me like Apple might be a bit over-confident..
- rgholmes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are exclusives all the time here in Oz. Most often Optus carries phones for 1 month before other carriers can. They did this with the RAZR for example. Telstra had the scoop on the ROKR, but screwed it up by destroying the software integration.
Bizarre but true. - scottybowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes a lot of them do it, but none of them do it well
apple is the leader in mp3 players, so thats why i want to hold out for an ipone - fu_fish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm not surprised that it's rumored to be a Cingular exclusive (for 6 months), given their current relationship. Unfortunately for me, Cingular is the only GSM provider in my area and once my contract with them expires in a few months, I will take their advice and drop my network because I'm tired of dropped calls, bad service, missing calls, duplicate text messages...I won't go on, it'll just make me mad. Maybe I'll just superglue a nano to the back of my phone. :)
- lucas911, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope think secret is wrong. I love apple but I could never go to Cingular. I think of cingular similar to microsoft, bad service, bad support, bad all around. Apple PLEASE choose someone else! I am willing to switch cellphone providers but not Cingular.
- Undefined, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The Razr was Cingullar only when it was introduced. It was grossly over priced, but you could only get it through cingullar for a long time. it must've been at least a year later when T-Mobile and others started selling it.
- gagravaar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's 25 million +1. Me.
Apple, release the f****ing thing now! - collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Loads of phones already do what you are asking for, camera, mp3 player and radio.
Fact is that phones have a far shorter lifespan than the mp3 players that you are worried about becoming obsolite. About a year on average.
And a first run product from Apple in a field which they are new to in points to a whole load of first generation problems too. Most likely it will look pretty though. - DeezKnots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gossip Gossip and more Gossip. Believe it when I see it. No Digg.
- rakaur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Phew, I was getting worried for ThinkSecret for a second. I was wondering when their next story would come out to drive up their ad revenue. iPhone to the rescue!
- screamokid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yah well i just got out of my 2 year with t-mobile and then renewed it to get a razr for 50 bucks ;( 4 f-ing years im gonna be with them
and no im not paying to cancel my contract - scottybowl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm probably one of the few people who doesn't own an mp3 player, let alone an iPod. The reason for this is that I'm patiently waiting for a phone that will bundle everything i need into something that will fit in the palm of my hand (phone, camera, mp3 player, radio etc).
I don't see the point of forking over £200 for an mp3 player that is going to become obsolete within 6 months. The mp3 player market is going forward at breakneck speeds as one evolution leads to another. A point will be reached when all the features people need are in one device and the evolutions will only be things like increased battery life - so I think i'll keep waiting until things (and costs) start to calm down! The "ultimate" device is just a few months round the corner. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5You are getting buried because you speak common sense. It is absurd to think that that many people are going to citch their current phones for an iPhone.
Fewer than that many people even own a ***** iPod! And buying an iPod doesn't force you to swtich cell phone providers if you are not on Cingular (and forfeiting a huge termination fee)
And yes, I know more than that number of iPods were sold. I don't give a *****. Becuase a huge portion of that is fanboy lemmings replacing their 12 month old iPod that already broke. Unlike the iPods, people are not going to buy two or more iPhones.
10 million would be pushing it. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4"You are getting buried because you speak common sense." - lakawak
And you're getting buried because you're a trolling moron.
If Apple does a phone right, sales could dwarf that of the iPod. The cell phone market is simply bigger than the market for a dedicated DAP. MUCH bigger. Period. People who wouldn't even think about buying an iPod might consider an Apple cell phone.
The lemming in this thread is you, lakawak. Try not to let your hatred of Apple stand in the way of rational thinking.
Oops, too late. - firsttube, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Aww, I'm married to T-Mobile for 1.5 years :( so much for signing my first ever 2 yr contract. Luckily I have a samsung t809.
- snowwrestler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+025 million phones sold in one year would be an amazing accomplishment if Cingular has a 6 month exclusive, since Cingular only has about 54 million customers and they offer a couple dozen phones. Even without the exclusive that is a pretty optimistic first year for a new cell phone from a company that has never made one before.
- spvn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1damn it.. i was hoping to see an iphone in my country, and considering the fact that i live in asia, i might only get to see the iphone in 2008.... :( i bet other people outside of the US also want the phone in their country as soon as it launches in the US.
- ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been hearing iPhone this iPhone that for quite some time now (as has everybody) but it has only struck me now as to how much this type of product would sell. I'm dumb, I know, but it'll be insane.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As those shares rise, i'm only getting richer. Wuhuuhahahah!!
- fenixx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ThinkSecret is really aggravating me. They take predictions a 7 year old could make, publish them, then get dugg and get all the electronics blogs in a frenzy.
Where else would the Apple phone go, if not Cingular? And if it turns out not to be Cingular, we will blindly disregard that ThinkSecret reported this article, and jump aboard the next "rumor" they throw out.
Here's a "rumor" for Think Secret ; A new iPod will be released next year! Hurry, publish that. - 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2this would make sense, cingular just broke off its partnership with its music vendor infospace
- roxas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i wonder if paris hilton would bling out apple's iphone. . hmm
- pope24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I would hope that they would release it internationally at the same time as they do in the US.
Actually I would really hope they pre-announce the phone ASAP so I know whether I should get a new phone at the end of next month. With phones the earlier you announce them, even if they are not available yet, they more people will hold off buying other brands until to get the cool new phone.
Apart from the usual cool interface stuff, I would hope that it has 3G or even better HSDPA capabilities, if it is EDGE only it will be such a disappointment and contrary to Apple's position on the cutting edge. - esoteric0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0you should try samsung. they're actually pretty decent.
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Ummm... The Mac Pros DO have new Airport cards.
