- theuniversal, on 04/19/2009, -13/+76This just in. Non-iPhone users who don't know what they're talking about love to bitch about the iPhone.
- flamyngo, on 04/19/2009, -10/+64Bitch all you want... I'll be video chatting with my iPhone.
- DamnedSaint, on 04/19/2009, -6/+46Why are people whining and bitching? If you don't like it, don't use it. Use Nokia, I'm happy with my iPhone.
- aussieNickuss, on 04/19/2009, -4/+39Whoop-de-*****-doo. As an ex-Nokia owner myself, all I can say is that Nokia may have had the actual feature already, but the iPhone will no doubt trounce the Nokia in the usability and elegance of said feature.
- Keddren, on 04/19/2009, -2/+30Taking sexting to a whole new level.
- wush, on 04/19/2009, -2/+23A decent UI.
A usable browser. - inactive, on 04/19/2009, -4/+22Apple will never add buttons. This is what I love about Steve Jobs...it's the fact that he would say NO to half of the planned features. If it was someone else, they'll just add everything and make everything crappy. Less features means better usability for each individual feature.
- digitalpencil, on 04/19/2009, -2/+19seriously guys, STFU! i hated the fanboys, but if I hear another hateboy bitch about another feature that Nokia/Treo/BB had 6/12/200-gazillion years ago and how anyone who's ever seen a click-wheel is a 'gay hipster fanboy' i'm going to punch an orphan in the face..
you have been warned.
seriously we know, you don't like it. i can't say i'm overly struck on the lack of a tactile keyboard either which is probably why i'll never buy one but YOU don't have to buy one either, YOU don't have to read these articles, YOU ca just choose to ignore it and carry on with your Nokia phone thing.. nobody gives a *****! - AndrewWiggin, on 04/19/2009, -2/+19Touchscreen.
Multitouch. - protodon, on 04/19/2009, -1/+16Slide out keyboard? Go back to 2001!
- Tanktunker, on 04/19/2009, -3/+16I've tried Nokias, and I tried iPhones, and iPhones are much easier to use, they look better and they don't ***** up as much in regards to trying to press ***** and the phone doesn't register, or the phone registering false positives when you weren't trying to press something.
- MadEngineer, on 04/19/2009, -1/+14Lets just wait and see what apple does with Video chat. I don't remember using my HTML browser MP3 player or pretty much anything else on my smart phones until apple made them usable.
- AndrewWiggin, on 04/19/2009, -2/+15It will be a sad day when innovation stops and first asks the question "Does anyone really NEED this?"
Of course no one needs a lot of technological perks that we have but that doesn't mean anything. Look at HD television, does anyone really need that? - JPamplin, on 04/19/2009, -1/+12Dear Flamyngo,
No.
Sincerely, Apple - MrJagil, on 04/19/2009, -1/+12and i'm happy with my Nokia. Let's be friends :)
- freediverx, on 04/19/2009, -2/+11There's a difference between bragging about features on your phone's spec sheet and actually using all those features on a daily basis. I'll bet anything that you don't use a fraction of those features in real life because they suck.
iPhone users actually use those features because they're well executed and easy to use. I'd rather pay more for features I use than save a couple bucks for poorly implemented features that will never be utilized. - Daniel591992, on 04/19/2009, -3/+12These comments are pathetic.
- AndrewWiggin, on 04/19/2009, -0/+9You just turned yourself into one of those "Big deal, my X phone has done Y for years" commenters.
- AndrewWiggin, on 04/19/2009, -0/+91. They didn't patent video chatting.
2. Do you really compare video chatting with hardware devices? - reflexblue, on 04/19/2009, -0/+8Why is everyone talking about this like it's just for video calls? I read it and immediately saw it is a way to record videos of yourself for the video edit/upload feature that people found a few weeks ago.
- inactive, on 04/19/2009, -4/+12roffle at the hateboys
- MacParrot, on 04/19/2009, -0/+7PLEASE hateboys! Save an orphan!
- mrBitch, on 04/19/2009, -0/+7@ AndrewWiggin, correct -- you actually RTFA.
@ AboveandBeyond, RE: "wow....apple patented video chat.. "
If you had RTFA, you would have read that the patents were for :
1. interface changes to UI to allow using the phone without looking at the screen.
2. UI changes based on motion sensing (eg. make the icons bigger if the OS detects that the user is running or walking while using the phone). - stubear, on 04/19/2009, -0/+7Steve, is that you? What have we told you about playing around on digg?
- mrBitch, on 04/19/2009, -0/+6@ ohreilly RE: "Big deal.
I could do video chat on a crappy NEC 3G phone in 2003. It wasn't a very good phone...
... No one actually wanted to do video chat though... "
You don't get it do you? The reason "No one actually wanted to do video chat" is due to the implementation and the underlying technology.
When the iPhone does video chat, it will be an implementation that works so well that you guys will say "why didn't anyone else think of that?" - Archaic1, on 04/19/2009, -6/+12Also just in, other phones get features iPhone has had for years! How over-analysed!
- coldeh, on 04/19/2009, -1/+7I'm sure this has already been on digg at least once this week.
- Capand, on 04/19/2009, -2/+8The thing is that the iPhone has much more public interest and likely more handsets sold than your Nokia.
The changes made in the iPhone are interesting because they will affect many, very-willing, consumers.
Apple has a tendency to execute these changes/updates very well and proper. - Philbert, on 04/19/2009, -1/+7@ohreilly What you want has nothing to do with what features are or are not available on phones.
- MacParrot, on 04/19/2009, -1/+7Soooo because some Apple users are ***** in Window's threads, that means you're NOT an ***** for doing the same in Apple threads? Just trying to clarify things here
- swmbuk, on 04/19/2009, -4/+9How much are they paying you?
- Philbert, on 04/19/2009, -1/+6Probably because nobody else had one.
- freediverx, on 04/19/2009, -1/+6Horrible because you actually dislike the phone features or because you live in an area with ***** AT&T service?
The latter is not Apple's or the iPhone's fault. - AndrewWiggin, on 04/19/2009, -1/+6Wow you missed the point.
- inactive, on 04/20/2009, -0/+5ohreilly: Can you just accept the fact that you're not the brightest crayon in the box and move on? You're wrong. Period. We're done here.
- sodoh, on 04/19/2009, -3/+7Not sure why your getting buried. Probably because of how you say it.
Without getting into who makes the better phone you are correct in that Nokia pioneered this stuff years ago. So from the patent standpoint I am not sure how Apple is going fair in that regards.
From a technology standpoint on mobile devices Apple is playing catch up. This is a statement of fact rather then opinion. But they are getting there. They do design a lovely UI. - MacParrot, on 04/19/2009, -0/+4MrBitch's point = WHOOSH over ohreilly
- mrBitch, on 04/19/2009, -0/+4@ StrikePower, RE: "Does iPhone even support Flash yet? Guess not."
Did you know that there is NO PHONE that currently supports the full Flash implementation?
Every phone on the market that has "Flash" actually has a subset of Flash known as Flash "Lite".
Google it and maybe you will learn to actually do a bit of research BEFORE posting on a subject you know very little about... - sondunoneblood, on 04/19/2009, -0/+3whats with all the dumb comments about the video chat. If you like it use it, you don't like it, don't use it. I welcome any new features that will improve the usability of the phone. I use video chat all the time on my computer, don't see why I wouldn't use it on a phone.
- sodoh, on 04/19/2009, -1/+4@Capand. Nokia is the worlds largest phone manufacturer in the world. Well ahead of Apple.
The iPhone at the moment really only sells well in the USA. In the EU there are a lot less restrictive plans and the system is more open. So getting a phone with better features then the iPhone is easy.
A lot of the stuff only coming new to the iPhone has been standard for phones for years here. iTouch features of the iPhone are great (best so far for a touchscreen), but everything else it is sub-par compared to other devices on the market. - homercles337, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3Wow, the Apple fan boism is strong in this thread. I think i just lost 100 IQ points by coming in here.
- sdcarter, on 04/19/2009, -4/+7Please explain why someone would need to video chat on a phone. I get the idea; but it doesn't seem very practical. I'd have to stop everything else I'm doing just so I can stare at a tiny screen. Having it in the house or at work is fine, it'd also work in futuristic pay phones (like in Blade Runner); but on a mobile device? Star Trek didn't even use it.
- P373Y, on 04/19/2009, -0/+3my verizon krzr has video texting. and my phone is a piece of *****.
- protodon, on 04/19/2009, -2/+5I don't get video chatting. Especially on and mobile phone. Most of the time I am on the phone I'm rolling my eyes or some *****. There are only two reasons why people would want video chat: one is so they can hold their baby up to the camera because it is the greatest achievement in their lives and the other is so they can say they video chat, extra points if it's on a mobile device.
- Kazaki, on 04/19/2009, -1/+4NO to half of the suggested features.
It's true, saying no is a very difficult thing to do but can lead to great things, protects the focus. Any other successful businessmen here on Digg want to continue to explain to me how Steve Jobs is making Apple go bankrupt? - MicahT0078, on 04/19/2009, -1/+41. Go to Europe, Central America or Asia. (Yes I have been to these places.)
2. Walk in any internet cafe or wifi coffee shop.
3. Be proven completely wrong about your opinion on video chat.
Perhaps if you left your basement/lair and actually got some friends in other neighborhoods and countries you would understand the benefits of the technology. - MortalynFlux, on 04/19/2009, -4/+7Buried. AOL had this 10 years ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P2SrqCWe_E - MacParrot, on 04/19/2009, -0/+3C'MON! I only have so many hands!
- sodoh, on 04/19/2009, -0/+2Can you cite some examples to what these broken promises are? Like the latest devices?
- jamaph, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2Real quick - factsahoy, the iphone has earbuds with a microphone, so you could video chat without, heh, to use your words; "Not only that, you get to yell at the phone as you hold it out for said view."
Anyways, to reply to the thread starter...
My cousins hubby is stationed in Japan. I'm sure that himself and many other service men and women, would love to be able to see, and converse with their loved ones. What if his kids are playing soccer, and mom is able to just phone him up, and say "babe look how cute"! He can just step away from what he's doing for two seconds, crack a smile, and get back to work - and no computer was needed.
And that goes for any two parties that are separated by a great distance.
I don't know about you dude, but I can think of a million uses for video chat on an iPhone, be them naughty ; ) or nice =) -
