Pre-Production program that enables anybody with the program to log onto the the project which includes storyboards, shooting script, ect. and it's free.
of course knowing Apple there's will probably be more advanced. - kingofinternet, on 02/01/2009, -6/+23one day apple will sue god for copying apple with apples.
- UbIwerks, on 02/01/2009, -0/+13As a storyboard artist for the last 7 years, this looks pretty cumbersome. Mouse clicking everywhere just to get an extremely basic storyboard? 10 seconds of sketching can bring 100 times more information. Lighting, composition, movement, backgrounds. I hope they don't forget that. This seems like something for junior/high school students.
I hope I'm wrong though! There's an incredible gaping hole for good storyboarding software! Just mainly ToonBoom Storyboard. - SlyT862, on 02/01/2009, -1/+13I'd love to see a preproduction tool that works seamlessly with Final Cut Pro... hope it happens soon.
In the meantime, yeah, Celtx is the way to go (I don't understand why people continue to spend 300 dollars for Final Draft). - mmijatov, on 02/01/2009, -5/+13The idea of a common software platform to allow collaboration among actors and crew sounds intriguing. I do wonder how receptive the industry will be to such an idea.
- Mizerooskie, on 02/01/2009, -1/+8A patent application does not equal a patent.
- xaeon, on 02/01/2009, -2/+9I'm not suprised really. Prior art is a concept that Apple can't quite seem to grasp.
- factsahoy, on 02/01/2009, -1/+7Hopefully they will revolt against this and any other of these ***** "business method" patents. Once Obama knocks out a couple of the top tasks that face this nation, next on the list should be massive reform of the patent office. There is no excuse for the USPTO's defiance of its own rules, continually awarding patents for such unpatentable items as algorithms (which all software is), "business methods", and THE OBVIOUS.
Talk about killing innovation and our country's future. Who would risk slaving away for years, or much of a lifetime, on an invention only to have it stolen under the authority of a patent that should never have been issued? Or simply to be bullied into bankruptcy and have your investors and customers threatened or driven off under the threat of such a patent?
If a patent like this is granted, all software developers might as well quit now. Basically, you won't be able to drag and drop controls onto a dialog box in your development environment, compile, and sell your app; someone might have patented making the OK button bigger than the Cancel button, or vice versa.
*****. Write to your representatives and DEMAND THAT THEY PUT A STOP TO THIS. - Emera, on 02/01/2009, -0/+6Like the idea.
- junkneo, on 02/01/2009, -0/+5Nice, I foresee many other applications for this software, especially in project discussions.
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/01/2009, -2/+7patents don't stifle innovation. They just make sure someone else doesn't come along, steal all your hard work and try to undercut you by selling a stolen version of your identical product.
If another company was interested and had the resources to produce a similar product, go ahead. No one has. - DecoyQ, on 02/01/2009, -2/+6After they made Windows XP, anything is possible :)
- michaelpinto, on 02/01/2009, -4/+8On the surface this looks like it's aimed at Hollywood and Pros, but my thinking is that as time goes on more consumers and everyday people will be doing video — sort of like what desktop publishing was years ago. There's a ton of potential once Apple starts to add video to the iPhone and integrate that to video editing software which will be provided via the cloud.
- digitalpencil, on 02/01/2009, -0/+4Oh for crying out loud! just because Apple's patents are widely publicized, does not mean they are the only company to patent IP. The patent system's broke, nobody in their right mind would deny it but you can't blame companies' litigation for having to play the game presented.
On the most part, patents serve as a form of intermediary currency between companies that both infringe upon each others' IP, leading to a kind of stalemate whereby both companies don't sue each other because they are both infringing on each others' IP.
I know it's currently super-fashionable to '***** Apple' and put them down for every possible thing they do and I guess it's in rebuttal to all the smug fanboy ***** we've had to put up with over the years but the anti-fanboys are getting even more annoying then the adversaries they so valiantly (and inanely) fight against..
Stop pretending Apple are any different to any other company. Any legal advice worth their weight would advise any company to take similar action.. Business isn't open-source hugs and cuddles, it's oft brutal and merciless, get over it.. - KJHM, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3Nice I currently use Celtx (www.celtx.com) but am sure this would probably have better features.
- OBKenobi, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3Apple Shmapple. Get over it already.
- Midnitte, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3Knowing apple they'll sue celtx for copy-write infringement.
- 2Bnor2B, on 02/01/2009, -0/+3Nice, but from what have seen in the past, story boarding takes place on a large blank wall with lots of thumbtacks, index cards and tape.
- Blajano, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3so they can sue while they sue.
- digitalpencil, on 02/01/2009, -0/+3^ yeah, sorry meant logic/fcp. point still stands though.
- JDex, on 02/01/2009, -1/+4Except that this is like patenting the act of web development in order to make Dreamweaver. Every production pipeline has a collection of tools and workflows to do this - most only "good enough" to get it done and none commercially sold (that I'm aware of).
Apple can make a killer app and have a MASSIVE market without patenting this process that others already use daily. But if they get the patent, no one else can sell an app based upon their own, existing and future R&D because Apple "owns" the idea that they didn't originally have. Thus they eliminate competition. - jasmus, on 02/01/2009, -4/+6To be fair, it's been a while since I've heard of Apple going after anyone for patent infringement (if that's what it's called). I'm only aware of Pystar recently.
- MWeather, on 02/02/2009, -0/+2c@admiumpaint
"its not as if patents are a new concept."
Software patents are a pretty new concept. in fact, they're not recognized in most countries. - MWeather, on 02/02/2009, -0/+2With the current set of goons running the PTO it does.
- shotgunefx, on 02/02/2009, -0/+2Yup, Celtx already does. But even if they didn't, embedding data and linking data should never under any circumstance be patentable. It's always obvious, it's just whether someone it yet.
- SlipperyNipple, on 02/01/2009, -3/+5Why would anybody not like the idea? If it would simplify anything, then it's a positive step.
- JDex, on 02/01/2009, -3/+5I don't blame them for trying to patent this... it's been hodge-podged together by each and every production shop, yet no one has actually successfully made a unified, commercially viable app to do it.
It's like patenting the act of web development, people already do it, some aren't doing it well, and no one thought to apply for a patent. I hope they don't get the patent, the only part of this idea that is original is to apply for a patent. - bobdance, on 02/01/2009, -0/+2Kino is an abbreviation for Kinoflo. More commonly known as a professional florescent light fixture that allows for color temperature correct tubes.
- MWeather, on 02/02/2009, -0/+2@digitalpencil
"Seriously, the patent system in the US is broken but all companies have a responsibility to employees and shareholders alike to use it in the best way they can to protect their IP."
Copyright is all that should protect software IP. - KingGorilla, on 02/01/2009, -0/+2Don't tell me what to do
- factsahoy, on 02/01/2009, -1/+3If you don't think the ***** patents being granted now don't stifle innovation, you've been living under a rock for 10 years. Amazon was granted a patent on clicking something to buy it. That's like someone patenting pointing at stuff under the deli counter to order it from the deli guy.
The patent office has simply GIVEN UP. There's no excuse for U.S. citizens or legislators to allow this robbery to continue. Grow a nut and tell your representatives that we need PATENT REFORM. Patents on real inventions are needed. Patents on "a method of swinging" (I ***** you not; look it up) simply prove that this office is broken beyond belief. - factsahoy, on 02/01/2009, -0/+2After Effects and FCP are from DIFFERENT COMPANIES.
- factsahoy, on 02/01/2009, -1/+3They only made the default UI scheme.
- tzon, on 02/01/2009, -0/+2Factoid:L FCP originated from Macromedia when it was called KeyGrip. Apple bought it and turned it into FCP. Macromedia is now part of Adobe.
- digitalpencil, on 02/01/2009, -0/+2you mean the company responsible for AE/FCP?
- JDex, on 02/01/2009, -1/+3@cadiumpaint
Oh... okay. Then Palm CAN provide a multi-touch-like interaction model, since they haven't used any of Apple's code and hard work without facing lawsuit. You are misinformed on how patents are used (abused) as a business tool.
Code is protected by copyright. Patents are about protecting general process ideas. This is not Apple's idea. Though they get credit for trying to patent the idea that has been worked on by many pipeline engineers globally for many years. - factsahoy, on 02/01/2009, -1/+3Final Cut Pro doesn't work "seamlessly" with itself. Don't hold your breath.
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/01/2009, -1/+3except you're wrong. This is patenting a certain application and the code that makes that happen in a specific way that apple has developed. Like i said before, if another company wants to put out a competing product that does the same thing in a better way there is nothing stopping them.
Its like how Ferrari patents their own specific mixture of Red, or Coke patenting their own mixture of cola. They're not saying you can't make something similar with different parts. They're just saying this is our hard work and you can't steal it verbatim. - digitalpencil, on 02/01/2009, -1/+3^ StoryBoard Artist received a pretty positive review in ComputerArts a while back although it doesn't seem as in-depth as this, not to mention integrated and cross-discipline.. Sounds like a great idea honestly but that won't stop everyone with a vendetta against Apple jumping on the patent bandwagon just because theirs are widely publicized.
Seriously, the patent system in the US is broken but all companies have a responsibility to employees and shareholders alike to use it in the best way they can to protect their IP.. mostly it simply results in patent stalemates with other companies' IP, and whilst i realize it's currently very fashionable to sand-bag Apple they honestly aren't acting any different to other large tech corps. - roxgod666, on 02/01/2009, -1/+2Dugg down and blocked.
- bobdance, on 02/01/2009, -2/+3If it includes detailed lighting diagrams, I'm sold.
- skankbowlfight, on 02/01/2009, -1/+2I'm calling *****.
The script in the storyboard, Young Man's line:
"I mean the way it is now, you're talk in (sic) the same *****' risk as when you rob a bank."
Is it kosher to use curse words in your presentation when you are trying to sell your idea to a commitee? - SlipperyNipple, on 02/01/2009, -1/+2or what?
- EverTheCynic, on 02/02/2009, -0/+1If they're so interested in motion picture production, why'd they cancel the damn Insomnia Film Festival this year? I was looking forward to it. Still, this could be handy since I suck at drawing storyboards.
- specialK16, on 02/01/2009, -1/+2Um.. the whole Pre ***** that is going on right now?
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/01/2009, -1/+2@jdex
so its Apple's fault that all of these other people weren't smart enough to utilize the system to their advantage? its not as if patents are a new concept. If this thing has been around for as long as you claim, how come Apple was the only company smart enough to patent it?
Part of being an innovator is recognizing that all the pieces to the puzzle are often in plain view, you just have to be smart enough to know how to put them together in a new way.
Its Apples fault that Palm didn't beat them to the punch with a touch screen handheld? If you think Palm created their new multi touch device without studying the hell out of the iPhone and reverse engineering it at some phase of R&D, you're pretty naive. - ushere, on 02/01/2009, -1/+1from what i've seen in hollywood mainstream movies recently they have three scripts which they circulate widely. mindless, mindless with violence, mindless with comedy.
more than likely apple with supply a fourth, mindless with text. - starfes, on 07/27/2009, -0/+0http://www.starfes.com
