Dunno, let me reboot my computer again and let you know. ;-) - thomthum, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27How is Delta going to feel about me playing my porn collection in-flight?
- Motobike_man, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29dude, just give up and digg the story you like and move on. The cream will rise to the top (er, front page rather). No one will ever stop dupes on digg.
- Doofy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20They'd feel the same as they do about you playing your porn collection in-flight on your laptop.
- ital, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20The only other article I saw linked to the wonderful news source Appleinsider. Let's link directly to real news on digg - not some crappy rumor website.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17The real fight for the marketplace between iPod and Zune isn't going to be about features, it's going to be things like this.
Whoever has the most integration, the most accessories, and the best deals with the record companies is going to be the long-term winner.
I keep buying iPods because I've got an iPod car kit, my alarm clock is an iPod dock, I already have a nice iPod case, and I can buy the music and TV shows I want through iTunes. If all that were true for the Zune, I'd probably be a Zune owner.
I wonder if Microsoft would have put as much pressure on labels to keep songs under a buck if they had been there first, instead of Apple. - blindbug, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I can understand the need (read: obsessive compulsion) that some people have with identifying duplicates. What I have never really understood, however, is why people who yell about duplicates do not give a link to the original post on digg. When people supply a link to the original, and the link is to the same exact story, I bury as duplicate and give a digg to the original.
However, if the link in the original post is about the same headline, but from a different site/article, then there is no reason to go screaming "DUPE! DUPE!". Imagine how the world would be if we could get news/points of view from only one source (see: V for Vendetta). - Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18yay raise the price of my ticket by adding ***** I would never use
- mvanhorn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I agree. Link from APPLE.COM rules all
- LeFrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9dude honestly all we want is a built-in dock that keeps our ipod fully charged. no need for fancy screen hookups.
- Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@zbeast
internet is more entertaining and worth some $ to keep in touch with the ground
need to keep your battery going longer? don't they have plugs under most of the seats?
"American. All Boeing 777, 767, 737, Airbus 300 and Fokker 100 aircraft and most Boeing 757 and Boeing Super 80 aircraft have power ports. They're not available on aircraft with flight numbers 2800-2999. To find specific locations, www.aa.com . Click on the plane, then on the seating chart to see where power ports are located.
Delta. Available in BusinessElite, and all classes of service on Boeing 777, 737-800 and 767-400 aircraft.
Continental. Each BusinessFirst seat in Boeing 767-200, 767-400 and 777-200 aircraft has a power port. In Economy class, on the Boeing 767-400 (H), laptop power is available in rows 10-15; on all other 767s, laptop power is available in rows 16-23, and on the Boeing 777, in rows 17 - 23.
United. Power is available on the B767-300, B747-400, and B777 in United First and United Business class. Existing B757 and A320 aircraft are currently undergoing system installation.
US Air. All seats on Airbus A319, A320, A321 and A330 aircraft have in-seat power ports." - pierrefilms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7People seriously need to stop complaining when companies bring iPod integration into their services. Seriously. The iPod has well over 70% market share.
Imagine this: Airlines partner with Microsoft for Windows integration into planes. Crap, what about us Mac users? If any of us whined all the PC users would say: "Who cares? Stop whining. Apple only has a tiny amount of market share. MS has about 90%.
Same difference. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No offense, but you're retarded. Apple's gone out of their way to keep the dock connector around, because so many devices are now using the dock connector, they don't want to break backward compatibility, it would be a witchhunt. If anything, they're adding newer capabilities to the existing connector, without reformatting it. This means continued compatibility.
However, if Apple were to change the connector, it would be a simple change of cable, a cable which costs maybe a dollar at most to produce, and something Apple would want to subsidize themselves (remember, it's to Apple's advantage to have these on planes). So, less than $500 per plane, less than 10,000 planes carrying this feature, that's not even $5,000,000 for them to worry about. $5,000,000 is waaay less than billions. - LordJezo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9No one else thinks this is really bad news?
As soon as Apple decides to outgrow the current connection port and change it as they did with the firewire port to the sub dock Apple airlines will now be forced to upgrade their planes to keep up with Apple's whims.
This is going to cost the industry billions. - PhillyMJS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I remember reading when the 3G iPods (the first to use the 30-pin dock connector) were released that not many of the connector's pins were actually used, and that it looked like Apple planned to keep that connector for a long time due to the room it allowed them for expansion of the connector's capabilites.
~Philly - panique, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Heh, how much do you guys like the Zune now?
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So? United are a huge airline and they're not affiliated with any of those other airlines, so its not just one group that's doing this.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Fancy? It's two wires and a transistor.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9but its a market advantage you have over other airlines and it costs
less than trying to add Internet access in flight to an airplane.
this is a win, win. it would be great to have power
for my pod while on a 14 hour flight. - slick_rick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@TheUngod
@bishop186
They're adding support for iPods to the existing in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems. If you don't have an iPod then you simply watch the movies provided by the IFE system instead. - alernon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Also, the connection charges your ipod:
snippity:
"These six airlines will begin offering their passengers iPod seat connections which power and charge their iPods during flight" - thunderer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, the screens I've seen all have small viewing angles, so the person next to you just gets freaked out about you rubbing your crotch obscenely while staring into the distance and looking like Gollum.
- Xenophix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Kickass, I fly around quite a bit for work... really, really, really good idea.
- JustinPM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wonder what class you'd have to be in to use this. I usually fly coach, so . . .
- 350Zed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The more Apple commits other companies to invest their money in support for a certain platform (in this case, an interface type), the more you can rest assured that said platform will last.
I would imagine that Apple must commit (via a legally-binding contract) that they will not alter their interface specifications for a specific length of time (contract term). - thunderer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Are you going to sue the American hotels for providing 110 volt current instead of 220? Ethernet instead of USB for internet? I'm sure some 3rd party will make a converter for your Zune.
- SpacedCowboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um, I guess you missed the bit where the connection also charges and powers the ipod...
Simon. - FHKE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Come on United, offer this service for economy class travelers!
- thelivnded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice comment man, that owuld be soem what interesting to view but i would never attmept it , but planes now allow you to take on the silly ipod, i have 2 of them, a mini (hta got run over and works great) and a 5 gen video, tha ti love. if we were to have a built in dock i would make it odd, since there was the invention of the extended battery pack which i have for both ipods. you have that you wont need your dock other wise. just saying,
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree pierre, it reminds me of stories ( I was not a part of ) about the methods Windows became the dominant platform for business and so on.
If iPod docks are the norm in cars, trains, planes, etc,.. well there that was the market's choice and apparently the consumer's choice.
People use OSX and don't complain that much software is on the Windows platform. - BrendanGall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats not a bad idea. When are they going to have ipods built into bathrooms, bikes, benches, and any other random place or item you could possibly use an ipod.
- rodzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool idea, my concern is, I am just waiting for some teen punk or some a-hole to some how screw with the ipod dock to cause damage to your/my iPod... I can see someone spitting in one, then someone pitting their ipod in it and ZAP! shorts out your ipod's dock connector rendering it useless.. something malicious like that

My Cowon A2's 10 hour video battery life lasted me through three movies and a lot more. I don't want to bash the iPod and go on ranting about another product, but all the iPod integration everywhere is really annoying. I would much rather see a standard set for universal integration with portable media devices and cars/airplanes/whatever. Wouldn't that be a much more logical choice?
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do agree a little that duplicates are annoying when you digg something and then it shows up two days later, then you feel compelled to digg again...
- rodzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great,now terrorists are going to start making bombs that look like ipods and f%^K this up too
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, if they just put in a connector for any video source, then it would really be better for anyone, for instance, if you had a portable DVD player or a notebook but you didn't want to open it up or wanted your wife to hear and view it too, maybe you could plug it in?
- lebbink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2for your information klm/air france today announced no deal has been made yet.
http://www.nu.nl/news/885979/54/%27iPod-aansluiting_in_vliegtuigen%27.html - AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, I'm probably never gonna be on a plane that has this, but you have to admit it's pretty cool.
- rieuwa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"Air France, Continental, Delta, KLM"
Makes this sound a lot... but consider that Air France and KLM are the same company, and with continental and delta are all SkyTeam! Delta is intensely close to Air France as well... - duality, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1thunderer, I was about to agree with you, but then you demonstrated your immaturity and mentioned the Zune. You could have presented your case quite well without that chunk of flamebait.
Any third-party converter of any type would probably be trivially easy to create, but nobody would do it either because the interface specifications are trade secrets, or because they're protected by patents and obtaining a license would negate the profit that comes from manufacturing a converter. - thelivnded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is very cool, i have some frineds that do alot reasearch with planes and hte new tech's tha tare going in i'll look into it and get abck as to what else they are doing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0klm/air france announced no deal has been made yet.
- Providence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't know about you guys, but I've been on a lot of planes, and none of them have had video screens in the seats. Maybe I just get the cheap jets.
- rodzilla, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Oh come on man, get with the times, everybody has an iPod
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I think this is a good point. Even if you aren't watching porn, what if you are watching something you don't really want to share with other people?
Once those screens are installed, anybody who -isn't- using them will be thought of suspiciously. - bishop186, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Now, the real question is this: how long is it before the airlines ban headphones because the cords "could be used as a strangulation device," or some such thing? What use will your precious iPod itegration be then, o' fellow Diggites?
- theonlyvlad, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Isn't this kind of integration bordering on monopoly? I mean, sure I have my choice of accessories, and it's not anyone's fault that 99% of them are for the iPod only. But if my airline only supports the iPod doc, it's not like I have a choice. So they are monopolizing the market by making the iPod the only player you can "plug in" to things.
- TheUngod, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1For some reason I don't think this will fly (no pun intended) well in Europe. They're already facing problems due to their lack of interopterability, and won't this just add to the problems? If you NEED an I-Pod to use the features on these planes, that just screams out another reason for an anti-trust suit.
- crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Wonder what dock it will be.. will you have to bring the little plastic piece that came with your ipod? or??
