- svidrod, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33doesn't it seem weird that they have enough of these returned and refurbished to sell on the website after only having been released for a month?
- ohnnyj, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Problem is these Macs are only fast with Universal binary programs. Otherwise they have to go through the Rosetta translation layer which makes them horribly slow. If you use Photoshop a lot then these are not the Macs for you. And unfortunately Adobe will not release an updated binary until CS3 :(.
I was going to get one of the MacBook Pros because:
1. It looks better than any PC based laptop.
2. It has OSX.
3. It is fast.
And why I cancelled my order:
1. It is not fast (Rosetta).
2. Intel is releasing new processors toward the end of the year (based on the Conroe core, called Merom) which should provide a substantial boost in performance and battery life).
3. Hope Apple will put 2. in their laptops.
4. I want a 12 in.
So I am playing the waiting game but I think it will be worth it as once all of the above issues are fixed, their laptops will be hard to beat.

- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17Erm, not really. Do you realize how many computers Apples sells?
- silentauthority, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Maybe professionals rushed out and bought them, then realized their professional level apps would only be working in a couple of months. If the Intel iMacs are so bad, then why are there nothing but good reviews out there?
- mntpng, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Amazon has $100+ rebates on intel macs with no tax and free shipping so buying a refurbished unit might not be all that of a deal when Apple subtract $250 and then they add a tax on top of that. They sorta even out to being similar price.
- jmholloway, on 10/12/2007, -3/+61099 is a good deal though. Its tempting. But I *just* bought a Dell right before the intels came out.... silly me -_-;
- replica, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4LOL. Your comment is widely viewed as incorrect - Apple is 4.5% in the US only. 2.2% worldwide market share.
In 2005, 207 Million PCs were sold. 4.5 Million of those were Macs. That is 2.2%. - TripOverFeet, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12No there are FLAMES. :-P
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Well, they could be refurbished returns, or they could be machines that failed the quality tests during manufacture, then were disassembeled and "refurbished" without ever touching the hands of a consumer. You do have to remember, though, that although Apple's market share is small compared to all PCs sold, they ship about the same number of computers as HP/Compaq does.
- snarkle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I think it's more likely that they were replaced under warranty and these are the repaired units.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those were released about a month after the iMac.
Just give it some time - TripOverFeet, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Dude, that is an awesome price. That's what I got my iBook for and these things are 329084x faster.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'd definately get one. My parents got a new iMac & my gf got the macbook pro and they beat the crap outta my PB G4, especially for encoding movies in H264.
Rosetta? Not an issue to me. Either applications are already native or they run pretty well on rosetta. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can you combine EDU discounts with a refurb product?
- volcomjerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No you cannot.
- silentauthority, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that was definetly because of a cat.
- vinny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't see any Intel Mac Minis, only the PowerPC version. Did they sell out or something?
- pwrstick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This is awesome. A MacBook is now only 700 dollars over my budget.
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11Built-in heater.
- MrTranscendence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"In 2005, 207 Million PCs were sold. 4.5 Million of those were Macs. That is 2.2%."
That's only how many macs were *sold*, though, and as such it is pretty useless: it does not correlate exactly with the number of macs currently in use. That would be more interesting but it is, alas, much harder to measure.
(If a greater percentage of mac owners are sufficiently happy that they keep computers longer than other computer owners, then macs could have a greater penetration than 2.2% despite the sale rate. On the other hand, if mac owners are defecting and buying Windows-running machines, it could result in a higher share for non-mac computers than 97.8%.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5only the ones that smell of cat piss.
- jmholloway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2too bad, eh? I tried it already too... :( mega bummer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2not really weird, logical really.
- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I'd bet that the refurbs are more reliable than the new units. I bet these were put under more stressful tests before being resold.
- cfsporn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw these about 3 weeks ago. However better late than never so I will digg it.
- ACalcutt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hmm....refurbised 20gb ipod color is in my price range
- TripOverFeet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ohnnyj: we already know the pros and cons of the Macintels.
- fuzzywitman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if the DOA Mac Mini I bought last month is in that pool. I will say that the new one they replaced it with is working great!
- TeKoverride, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just received an intel imac i ordered for my mom. Heavy duty apps under Rosetta ...well let's say I am not impressed there. Give it time though. The apps running natively kick the crap out of my imac G5 in comparison. If anyone runs the apple apps most of the time I suggest the intel mac...its fast
I want a 12'' intel notebook though...come on roll them out already!!! - RexStJames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But they're Apple certified - meaning they come with the full warranty. Translation? Apple is confident that they work. Remember, they don't WANT you to send it back. It costs them money. So they better make pretty sure it's a working computer first.
- kamot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not good enough! Should be closer to half price to be interesting.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I agree that cnet is stupid, but they arent the only ones to arrive to this conclusion. Just google for benchmarks.
- palomino985, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Um.. you may not get a discount on the refurb'd Macs, but- you get a discount on the 3 year extended warranty that makes it very worthwhile. At least, I know this works through Middle Tennessee State University's Apple store.
- burleyc1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I love how this comment depends on tax evasion, and with that comment, that the average digg viewer(including me) just accepts that as common practice and goes along with it. Gotta love what the Internet has done to taxing.
- ajcannon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2anyone else notice that Apple is suffering from the digg effect (or is it just me?)
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1apple sells a lot of refurbished stuff. a good majority of the apple servers bought at my work are refurbished.
these macs were on their site for quite some time already. i think this was dugg before?
either way, you get the same warranty and a chance to buy the applecare plan (always buy applecare). one time we returned a powerbook because the case was slightly wobbling, purely aesthetic. so for the most part these machines have nothing wrong with them at all. - Spiff05, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7A company sells refurbished products, WOOOOOAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
- apyoung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0don't do it.
- CaffiendCA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got a 20". Freaking love it. The non universal apps are suprisingly quick. Startup is slower, but performance running isn't bad.
- Hellion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah, but you can't buy a warranty from Amazon- which you'd probably want, even if you weren't getting a refurbished device.
- Arnold22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not like this hasn't been around for ever
- bengringo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well i guess this would be a good idea for people who want an apple and don't want to spend 2 grand on it but I've always been a little cautious when buying used or refurbished computers or part's because obviously they where not just returned for the hell of it they where returned for a reason. I don't really care to spend 15 hundred dollars to find out that reason.
- nigeltufnel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2LOL. That article is widely viewed as incorrect - IDG itself put Apple in the top 5 computer makers with 4.5% share in late 2005.
- rawson819, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Surprising there are no refurbed 12" Powerbooks ?
- brentz0r, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6they've been there for a while...
- ricksite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I wonder if Apple is selling refurbished computers to celebrate their 30th Anniversary.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5exactly, did they just find this out now???
- Tux541, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Did anyone check out the C-net article? You actually trust the performance tests they do? I would if anyone can explain to me why a G4 1.33Ghz 12in iBook is 3x as fast as a G4 1.33Ghz 14.1in iBook for Photoshop? Does that 2in of screen size really make the laptop 3x slower?
Yes, we all know that the MacBook IS slower then a Powerbook when running non-native apps. But who doesn't? Doesn't mean the laptop is a slow performer. I doubt anyone is buying a MacBook and going WTF, Photoshop is slower on this then my Powerbook, I'm glad I'm buying equipment for my profession and have no clue what I'm getting! - apflwr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Refurbs aren't just returns... I would bet a lot of these are display models and "loaners" sent to reviewers.

What is Digg?
