- JohnnyJohnny, on 10/12/2007, -3/+49Been using OSX since the beginning and I had no idea about this!
- Ireland, on 11/05/2007, -2/+42I always knew dictionary was system wide, but I never knew about this. I usually double click > right click > look up in dictionary. I love the system wide dictionary thing, and this just makes me love it more.
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29It's times like these that make me wonder why Apple never gives exposure to some of the truly innovative features of OS X. This thing is a life saver as I usually have the dictionary/thesaurus widget open at all times.
- itistoday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21@onestep:
According to my sociology class, by age 5 (or something like that) kids are able to see the world from other points of view. Perhaps when you do grow up a bit you'll see that people dugg this story because unlike you, they had not heard of this nifty feature before. Just relax. - avatarpalin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Hey there are new Mac converts every day who might not of seen the Keynote two years ago..... I guess they aren't welcome on Digg eh???
- hyukhyuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15@ UncleCrapper
Sometimes the folder path would be too long to fit, so the solution would not be consistent.
Also, if you Apple-click the folder name at the top of a Finder window, you can see the path hierarchy you need. - TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14...because Word is one program. This is a system-wide spell checker. TOTALLY different.
- luistux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I have to agree that apple is not doing a good job at showing all features of their OS.
But can they really? I mean, that's a lot of info to be covered!!!!
Anyway, I recommend the book The Missing Manual by David Pogue on OS X. They usually do a good job at posting features manufacturers do not post.
Also, is it that hard to do some research? Like adding a macworld RSS feed to safari and go over it every day for about 5 minutes?
You'd be surprised how many "hidden" features Windows has, this is common in all OSs. - onestep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11If you guys think this tip is cool... here are over 180 more....
http://www.thinkmac.net/blog/archives/cat_mac_tips.html - TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12This would be very useful if it wasnt restricted to just cocoa apps. nice find tho i never knew that. os x is always hidden with goodies everywhere.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"This is a system-wide spell checker."
Correction: It's a system-wide dictionary. - h3xley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Your post illustrates exactly the kind of thinking which has resulted into linux still not being a great desktop OS (compared to OS X)...
- UncleCrapper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12A system wide dictionary is not as sexy as Aero Glass or Expose, but it's still a cool feature. It's attention to little details like this that makes using my Mac MIni and OS 10.4 interesting and productive, and it's also the small details and differences that make it frustrating and confusing (what is so hard about displaying the folder path in the title bar?).
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8this is why i love OSX - endless hidden features that are uncanny and useful.
- argyle747, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8This Thesaurus/Dictionary shortcut is prodigiously wondrous!!!!!!!!
- macgabriel87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8this dictionary feature was just added in tiger.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Some overactive digg moron decided to digg you down, for what? Just negated that, but there are plenty of other morons who shouldn't have mod powers.
- munkt0n, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10hoo neids a dikshonaree anee whey?
- heiesuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6lol, I totally missed this. I use the spellcheck and look up in Dictionary feature every time I formulate a sentence but I didn't know this was here. Thanx I learned something new about Tiger.
- prax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I remapped this feature to F8 since I use it so often. It's easier to hit than OPTION-CTRL-D. You can do the same in Keyboard Shortcuts, found in the Keyboard & Mouse system preferences.
- thomasjordan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have only been using OSX for half of a year or so and did not know about this. Incredibly cool however. Good tip.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Cause men do it from the keyboard ? I feel that a mac, the pioneer of visual interfaces should not force it's users to go console. Ever !"
Then download Onyx and enable developer mode with a checkbox.
Or...buy this program: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17922 - munkt0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm Brian, and so is my wife.
- crashingechelon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love learning about new short cut keys and features that i didn't know about. Even though it's almost been a year since i've had my mac, it's like every day i learn soemthing new. Even by reading the comments i learned another short cut. when you have many apps open and cycle through them using cmd+tab you can close them in that little window by hitting Q. Makes it alot nicer then having to select that app.
- Phatt138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's coming in Leopard, I believe. Chill. Anyway, is it such a pain-in-the-rear to enter debug mode? What, ~25 characters in terminal? Write a script, for christ'sake.
Great shortcut by the way! Wonderfully useful...though I have to admit that I find it odd that the Apple dictionary fails to include works like MacBook and iPod (out of the box, anyway). Sure, they're product names and not actual words, but I do find it odd when my MBP insists that I'm misspelling MacBook. - gagravaar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9JohnnyJohnny:
Same here... cool! - phronko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh, the problem is I'm an idiot and didn't read the article. It doesn't work in Firefox, only Safari (and other built in Mac programs). Duh.
- lightandshadow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5NeXT STEP had system-wide real-time spellcheck as far back as 1990.
Since the Cocoa framework in Mac OS X is based on the NeXT STEP frameworks, developers get real-time spell check in Cocoa apps for "free". - SlowOnTheUptake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I guess I'm one.
- prax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4er, CMD-CTRL-D, not OPTION... oops
- Jeezoflip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Are you trying it on a cocoa application. Only works on cocoa ones.
- SpacedCowboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually, it's a component of the system-wide spell-checker. All Cocoa text-views can call on the dictionary to automatically do spell-checking... The following are defined in the basic view 'NSTextView':
Working with the spelling checker
– isContinuousSpellCheckingEnabled
– setContinuousSpellCheckingEnabled:
– spellCheckerDocumentTag
– toggleContinuousSpellChecking:
... these just integrate with the dictionary and do the underline-words-that-don't-match thing. There are then methods to call on the backing 'NSText' class ...
– checkSpelling:
– showGuessPanel:
(you probably don't need to use checkSpelling at this stage :). But, showGuessPanel: will search the dictionary for similar words, again just like you would expect.
All of this can be enabled with a single method call on the NSTextView that you're using to display text. Pretty much any Mac app can have spell-checking "for free". It just works, don't you know [grin]
Simon - sendmesomejunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4very cool feature
- JnCoBoB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is great. I've been using OS X for years and never knew. This is very handy.
- Stelex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, quite handy. Here are a few other cool things on Mac
http://www.silvermac.com/2006/cool-things-you-can-do-on-mac/ - DocBoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4These rock thanks for the link!!
- cctoronto05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5nice.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@ igraham09
it was a joke. relax there buddy - highpass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Do you have the shortcut enabled in System Prefs - Keyboard & Mouse - Keyboard shortcuts; "look up in Dictionary" ?
- zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4see its just the small things that add up in the end, that make this a great os. not to compare it to anything.... :D
- craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Something else that's good to know: in all apps that use standard text fields you can enable an inline spellchecker where it underlines misspelled words in red. You can activate the feature by selecting Edit > Spelling > Check Spelling as You Type.
I use this feature a great deal as it allows my Safari posts to be inline spellchecked just like in word rather than using clumsy web-based checkers. FireFox finally added this feature to version 2.0 although they're rolling their own engine, probably for cross-platform compatibility. - chuckythe2651, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you have never noticed, brainiacs, digg was started by a couple of Mac users. Users that came out of the TV/entertainment sector, where there is mostly Macs (for editing, visual arts, etc).
There is a lot of Digg users using Macs because of the typical person that uses a Mac. Mac users tend to be a little more into new technologies. They are willing to take chances, and experience new things (like spending time in a revolutionary news site...kinda like digg!).
I respect you guys not liking Macs, but don't put your low I.Q.s on display by just bashing others. If you have a legitimate argument then bring it on. If not..just shut it. - mattyohe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Another feature not that widely known... Use your apple remote to sleep and wake your mac... Hold the Pause/Play button on your remote for 5 seconds and it will sleep!
- jbartley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow, Works very well and fast too. It is the little things that bring me the most joy. I just can't believe that I didn't know about this. You would think this would be a better documented feature. Cool Tip!! Thanks!
- danmilw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"This are two full English dictionaries:"
Sounds like you is needing something other than a spell checker you self. ; ) - igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5same here...
i'm constantly jamming the F12 key to open up my dictionary widget
i srsly wore off the letters on the key :D
+digg from me - iAlan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3...that is, switch *completely* to the Mac.
- iAlan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The built-in dictionary and spell checker is the deal maker for me. I love my new MacBook....and wonder why MS never included these features. I can't switch to Apple completely due to one program that only works with Windows, TCNet. Otherwise I'd switch to the Mac.
- umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah I figured it out when 10.4 came out, and probably use it at least once a week. Very useful.
- Wolfman~K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Damn, I have been using OS X for 4 years now and never knew that one.
+digg -

What is Digg?
