Apple OKs 13-inch LED BLUs units for use in ultra-portable
appleinsider.com — Apple, which in January is expected to take the wraps off its slimmest and sleekest notebook in years, is reported to have placed orders for a new breed of 13.3 inch LED backlight units with production-ready quantities scheduled for delivery this month.

- lateralus, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2hahahaha.... (L)User Error.
- OSJunky, on 12/05/2007, -12/+1this isn't for a laptop but for a tablet/laptop hybrid
http://9to5mac.com/apple-13-inch-touchbook-pro-432 ...- Murdats, on 12/05/2007, -2/+2tablet/laptop hybrid?
wtf is that? tablets are essentialy laptops with a touch and swivel screen.
does this mean it will be missing either the touch screen or the swivel screen?- Tippis, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I think he means the swivel kind, along the logic that a "true" tablet has no keyboard or lid -- it's just a thick screen.
- Murdats, on 12/05/2007, -2/+2tablet/laptop hybrid?
- carpetbomberz, on 12/05/2007, -2/+21Speaking of Dell LED backlit 13.3" panels, I have one right now on XPS M1330 and it is the brightest, sharpest laptop display I've ever used. Can't see what Apple is able to do with the same panel on an ultra-portable.
- illt, on 12/05/2007, -10/+5hate to burst your bubble, but 13" LED backlit displays are in most if not all 13" ultraportables....lenovo, toshiba, samsung and vaio.
the article is saying this is a new breed of 13" LED backed that will soon be in new dell and apple laptops- tolbs, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5correct me if i'm wrong but I don't even think Lenovo has a 13" screen available in both thinkpad and 3000 lines...
- Gloony, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Erm... the Dell XPS M1330 *is* an ultraportable, so therefore you *can* see what Apple is able to do with the same panel on an ultraportable: Imagine an Apple branded and styled XPS M1330.
In other words, a Macbook.
Once again the dam holding back the OMFGWTFAPPLETEHBEST flavoured kool-aid has sprung a leak. - daza, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2The XPS M1330 is one of the best lightweight laptops I have ever used. A friend has one and the quality of the panel is amazing, very sharp, bright and vibrant colours. A tad expensive, but it's definitely a winner (XPS M1330).
- illt, on 12/05/2007, -10/+5hate to burst your bubble, but 13" LED backlit displays are in most if not all 13" ultraportables....lenovo, toshiba, samsung and vaio.
- happyseamonster, on 12/05/2007, -0/+43Why does it have to be for an ultra portable? That's the size of the Mac Book. Apple already announced their intention of using LED BLU's for their displays as part of a Green push. They started with the 15" MBP and will eventually use LED for all their displays.
- deadnoob, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4im with you. i dont see how making a computer with the same screen size is making it super portable. even if it is thinner, its still not supper portable.
- smoothlou, on 12/05/2007, -3/+2Unless it's a multi-touch tablet...
- m00nmaster, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1I have the LED panel on my MBP and coupling that with their super awesome ambient screen brightness adjuster, which works a million times better than a similar feature on my work Dell D430, makes it the best screen I have seen so far on a notebook. Plus they hid the sensor for it, on the Dell it looks like a shiny black spot on an otherwise dull finish bezel.
- Gloony, on 12/05/2007, -0/+6I have to agree; a 13.3" screen does not automatically imply an "Ultraportable" form factor.
It's more the classic "laptop" form factor that went missing in the bit to fit a 17" screen to the damn things several years ago.
12.1" is where "ultraportable" begins - look at the Sony/Tosh/Lenovo range of laptops to see some pretty good examples.- Tippis, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Agreed. Unless we're talking <1cm thickness and in the 2lbs-range here, 13.3" is just regular old Notebook, nothing "ultraprortable" about it.
Most ultraportable *max out* at 12.1" and 3lbs, and to be considered small and cute, they need to be smaller than that.
- Tippis, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Agreed. Unless we're talking <1cm thickness and in the 2lbs-range here, 13.3" is just regular old Notebook, nothing "ultraprortable" about it.
- deadnoob, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4im with you. i dont see how making a computer with the same screen size is making it super portable. even if it is thinner, its still not supper portable.
- InSeverance, on 12/05/2007, -11/+4So Apple are going to announce a new line of computers AFTER Christmas*
Right...
*At Christmas a lot more computers are sold- ThreeDee912, on 12/05/2007, -1/+9It's too late to release a new product. Releasing a product after the holiday rush is a good thing is some ways.
New product now=Angry customers ("WTF I just ordered a MacBook, I hate Apple")- wtfpwned98, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I DID just order a Macbook, but unless this one sells for ~$1100 we're talking about, umm...Apple's and Oranges.
- seinman, on 12/05/2007, -0/+20Apple usually releases new machines at Macworld, which is the second or third week of January. It's been this way for years.
- Tippis, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1But aren't those generally consumer oriented? I seem to recall that both the Mac Pro and the MacBook Pro were announced during other events.
Ultraportables (if, indeed, a 13"-er can be called that) generally fall into a higher pricing tier, which would make them more pro-level products.- seinman, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Generally, you're right; however, if I remember correctly, the MacBook Pro was announced at Macworld.
- Tippis, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1But aren't those generally consumer oriented? I seem to recall that both the Mac Pro and the MacBook Pro were announced during other events.
- deadbaby, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4They're going to sell a lot of Macs for X-Mas anyway. If this is really an ultra-portable it's likely to be very pricey which makes it less of a X-Mas gift and more of a "tax refund splurge" sort of gift IMO.
- baller90210, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2i hope so, i'd like to make myself feel good about it since i just bought a macbook
- ndonohue, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2to add on to deadbaby, its also good practice in general for Apple, as it allows them to get rid of any surplus old-gen product before they release any updates to the product line.
- ThreeDee912, on 12/05/2007, -1/+9It's too late to release a new product. Releasing a product after the holiday rush is a good thing is some ways.
- illt, on 12/05/2007, -6/+4I really manufactures would make ultra thin, ultra light, low-powered 15" laptops....i guess there isn't a market for them.
i don't need the horsepower, just a larger screened "ultra-portable" as oxymoronic as that sounds.- whahaa, on 12/05/2007, -1/+0agreed. a 15" notebook that's .5" thick and weighs less than a pound with 10+ hours of battery life... sold!
- m00nmaster, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3And you'll buy music online when it's non-DRM, 320kbps, VBR, super mega high quality, right? ;)
Never satisfied. - Tippis, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1So... basically, a Vaio TX or TZ that has had a run-in with a steamroller? :P
- m00nmaster, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3And you'll buy music online when it's non-DRM, 320kbps, VBR, super mega high quality, right? ;)

Orrr...you could shut the ***** up.

- fuzzmeister, on 12/05/2007, -1/+20I assume you hate Toyota when they come out with a new car every year, too.
- pintomp3, on 12/05/2007, -3/+1toyota doesn't try to keep everything a secret up until the release date. it's hard to make buying decisions based on rumors.
- knightboat, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2Right, because it makes sense to say "don't buy this product, we have something new coming in two months. Let it sit quietly on our shelves and add to the feng shui."
- pintomp3, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2that doesn't happen because most products are marked down in price once the new model comes out.

- ozroy, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6Oh come on. Digg publishes every single Mac rumor that comes out, and you are pissed at Apple because there is a possibility Apple will be updating their product line soon? It's not their fault you don't bother to research anything for 5 minutes.
- CraigJ, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6Oh crap, I just bought a new Dell and now the spec has been revised up. I hate Dell... You are a moron if you expect the system you just bought not to be revved to better specs in 6 months (at the most) It's technology - get used to it and quit whining.
- tracydanger, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4I bought a G5 iMac with iSight as soon as it came out. A month later, they introduced the intel iMac. I still love my G5 iMac. It's a great machine even though there are other things that are faster (much more so by this point). I bought a computer to meet my needs and it still does that. I can't complain (I could, but I choose not to).
- wtfpwned98, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Why not a Macbook Pro? Because that cost more, right? Well, this one will cost more too, so...as you were.
- c0n724ll10n, on 12/06/2007, -0/+0I believe the OP was wtfpwned.

- BossKey, on 12/05/2007, -1/+18LED backlights: Less battery consumption, better color, longer lamp life...what's not to like?
I'd hit it...with my credit card- Tippis, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1...or, even better: less batter consumption → a bit longer battery life *plus* smaller (i.e. less heavy) battery.
But maybe that's just me -- my main grief with the various MacBooks is that they're a bit too heavy for their size, and not as "on the go" as they could be...- demonstro, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1mmmm, batter
- Tippis, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1...or, even better: less batter consumption → a bit longer battery life *plus* smaller (i.e. less heavy) battery.
- ndonohue, on 12/05/2007, -0/+7yeah it kind of sucks that windows is still the only real option when it comes to tablets (linux isn't nearly there yet)

- gr00vy, on 12/05/2007, -2/+4YES! It will be 13 inches!!!!! I was worried they would make it thin and wide. But it will be small and convenient. Yes!
- DCstewieG, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5That's what she said.
- brickbat, on 12/05/2007, -5/+8For all those people that just bought a macbook, calm down and enjoy it. Version 1.0 Apple hardware is C R A P.
- jimjimjimson, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2I agree with your first comment, but I have to disagree with the Version 1.0 theory. I still use an original 17" 1Ghz AlBook (built in March '03) daily. Almost five years and all I've needed to do to it is replace the battery and power adapter (twice).
- sg7791, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1On the contrary, I bought my macbook last... October (?), I believe. The first week of the Core 2 Duos, and I'm still having hardware problems. All covered by Apple, nothing hard drive related thankfully, but nonetheless annoying.
- MikeCerm, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1From the facts I've read, not the analysis, this is going to be MacBook 2.0. It's the same size screen!
- demonstro, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I agree too, but have to add that other manufacturers have that V1.0 problem too
- jimjimjimson, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2I agree with your first comment, but I have to disagree with the Version 1.0 theory. I still use an original 17" 1Ghz AlBook (built in March '03) daily. Almost five years and all I've needed to do to it is replace the battery and power adapter (twice).
- Genetico, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5apple products hold their resale value pretty well. I wouldn't worry about selling a macbook if I had to.
- RealHyperX, on 12/05/2007, -11/+3Apple hardware rocks, but the OS is SOOO ***** slow, it may as well be going backwards.
- fakingbush, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6obviously you are not an OS X user.
- BossKey, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4You seem to have missed the common observation:
With each Windows upgrade, the system gets slower.
With each OS X upgrade, the system gets faster.
- rowlodge, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2waiting...
- selfdisplaced, on 12/05/2007, -2/+7i want a 12" powerbook back :-(
- nufoto, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4And when are the new MacPros with Penryn chips coming?? should be an interesting January!
- greydout, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I'm way more excited about this than I should be.
- DagMX, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3umm...it's just bloody new screen lighting for the macbooks. I would have thought that having the exact same screen dimensions as the macbook would have been a bit of an obvious tip-off right?
- denniscross09, on 12/05/2007, -0/+0Sure this is a great new product but is apple's supply chain going up to speed enough to get me one when i want it?
- Dylson, on 12/05/2007, -5/+2Macs cant right click!
- goudkamp, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Macs can, I'm sure you can't.
- Dylson, on 12/05/2007, -5/+1No, I can actually.

- goudkamp, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Macs can, I'm sure you can't.
- 1CHAMONIX, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Mac just keeps getting better and better. It would be interesting to do a financial analysis of this apple company and put some money into it. I have also been hearing about this company called Microsoft and I heard it is getting destroyed lately. That is just a rumor probably.
- Tippis, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Well, you heard wrong. MS is where it has always been: stable (and boring) as a rock...
- sniperfora, on 06/15/2008, -0/+0Instead of making debt the first place any income goes, it should be savings. Yes getting out of debt is important but savings is even more important, if just to get into the habit. Even if you are a couple $10k in the hole, putting away even $10 a month is a good thing.
