- kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -8/+74"Nike Inc. and Apple Computer Inc. unveiled the first product of their Nike+iPod line of products, which integrate Nike clothing and gear with the music player. The two introduced the Nike+iPod Sport Kit, a wireless system that allows special Nike footwear to provide information such as distance, pace and calories burned on the iPod nano screen. Real-time audible feedback is also provided through headphones. The kit, which includes an in-shoe sensor and receiver."

- maverick999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Here's Apple's press release: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2006/may/23nike.html
Here's how it works: http://www.apple.com/ipod/nike/gear.html - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16New feature: click your heels together to skip tracks on your iPod.
- cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22I'ma get burried for this, but I just spit coffee all over my desk. That was honestly the funniest thing I've read all day, maybe all week.
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I hear they're donating the first pair to Ballmer - the man needs more exercise.

- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I, for one, welcome our new ShoePod Overlords.
I enjoy that the centre button has become the "Power Song" activator. They could call it iPod Hero.
An interesting Note - from TFW: 1 The sensors battery is not replaceable. Battery life will vary considerably based on use and other factors.
I sincerely hope the sensors are relatively cheap. A disposable sensor that lasts for anywhere from six months to a year is not a bad thing. A disposable sensor that I replace weekly - well, that leads to vitriolic anti-Apple posts that over use and generally mangle the word "debacle". - rabiddogma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I wonder if they'll be better than these: http://www.lace-mag.com/typo3temp/pics/ff57ecc430.jpg
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i'm not surprised... they both have very similar styles..
especially the logos (and they're both very trendy)
i think this might work for them.. - heydigital, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Shoes made in China, computers made in China. Perfect match!
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I love Apple and hate Nike. What to think, what to think.
I'll get back to you. - drfishy520, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8A bit more info:
According to a "Switch To A Mac" blog post, the author saw a clip from CNBC's show "On The Money" wherein they apparently discussed such a partnership being announced as early as tomorrow:
Rumors are that Apple and Nike will be announcing some sort of deal tomorrow. I just saw the news on CNBC's "On The Monsy" [sic] television program. They also mentioned that Lance Armstrong is scheduled to be at the news conference tomorrow. - Annon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Only $29... pretty cheap, I'll probably get this.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Apple really knows their demographics don't they? Everyone I see jogging these days has an iPod on.
- CasaMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nike also got a very large network of resellers. So in the future apple products can be bought almost everywhere.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Throwing chairs and jumping around like a monkey is great exercise.
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3new, the iFoot
- pu-z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's either a accelerometer and / or a gyroscope. My polar RS 200 has the option of a footpod that measures the speed and angle of each step. The SO has one; It is scarily precise (2% error margin, makes it much more precise than a GPS in forrests) once calibrated. And you do that on the first run anyway. The sensor might be a step sensor, but that's unlikely.
Adidas has something like it, in their shoes. And I agree; a heart rate monitor should be included. An Apple Nike Polar cooperation; MAN that would be awesome. They complete each other perfect as to the exercise experience. - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Check it out:

- benska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now Bootcamp will turn your Nikes into Reeboks. And now we can sue Apple for blisters.
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Then you'll be concerned by the fact that China's dirt-cheap (and some would say artificially below cost) production methods are actually damaging industry in other third world countries, causing hardship for those people doing the work for low cost and destroying the hope of building new schools and such as you describe.
- conigs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yes the shuffle is a terrible DRM'd product because there's no way in hell you can actually rip your own CDs and put that music on it, or buy MP3s from places like eMusic and put it on there... oh, wait.
Okay, the music you buy on the iTMS is DRM'd so you'd have a valid complaint there, but that's not what you're complaining about. - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4They're both brands trying to sell you stuff in the disguise of "lifestyle." I fail to see why you would prefer one to the other when, in the end, they are the same.
- liquidoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think this is an awesome idea, but now it means I have to indulge two fetishes: My GF's shoe fetish, and my geek fetish :(

- Andy.D, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So it's official now. Cool!
- JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3anyone else sick of the stupid "i____" jokes? This seems pretty cool and useful, and not bad for only $29.
- fliped, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2does it only work with the nano?
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In case anybody's wondering: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoe_event_horizon
- jsg7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And once Apple comes out with the iPhone, Nike and Apple can collaborate on the new, modernized ShoePhone (iShoePhone?).
- obenski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's video and a demo of the Nike+ iPod sport kit now up on Nike's web site: http://www.nike.com/nikeplus/?ref=uslanding#overview
- drewpost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One interesting thing to note - This isn't the first time that Apple and Nike have entered into an iPod marketing ploy. When the first iPod minis came out, every single Apple retail emplolyee recieved a free pair of some really nice Nike shoes that had the release date of the mini embroidered on the side and the nike swoosh was available in the 5 colours of the mini (we could pick which colour we wanted) The day the promotion was due to launch we had all the signage up in our store and then later on that afternoon word came from corporate to pull it all down because something had changed and we never heard about the promotion again (although we did get to keep our sweet shoes) They were a bitch to wear at work though b/c they had black soles and our store had a wooden floor (it was one of the early stores) so we scuffed up the floor pretty bad through the course of a normal work day
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Naomi Klein just suffered a stroke
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+3"Will the black sneakers cost $150 more than the white ones?"
- sonofalink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So you WANT to jog with a hard drive based player?
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great. Now I can have a fully branded lifestyle. Honestly, doesn't this alliance between two mega-brands portend the End of Days?
- optimusfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Steve Jobs is going to have to switch from New Balance to Nike now.
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also have a Polar RS200SD that does heart rate, pace, and distance. Works with any shoe as you just clip the footpod to your laces. It works pretty well for a beginner or intermediate runner with cash to spend, but it isn't as accurate as GPS (unless you're in a forest or near tall buildings, etc).
Anyway, I don't know a single serious runner who wears Nike... their shoes have the reputation of being cheaply made gimmicky crap.
On the other hand, I know plenty of serious runners who have iPod Nanos... I own one myself, it's great. - pu-z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They are not always pedometers. Polar has a accelerometer / gyroscope based footpod that attatches to your sneakers. I have tried it out, it is way more precise than a Garmin GPS once you get inside the forrest (+/- 2%). I like the map function on the Garmin, but the Polar is much more exercise oriented.
- jtjdt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kevin Rose if famous, it's like when oprah reccomends a book! It becomes a NY Times best seller the very next day!
- streak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Right, Lyph4. And besides, Ballmer doesn't even let his family use Google, so why would anyone expect him to use the Nike Apple?
- pu-z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also, Adidas makes a similar product. It might be hackable. The sensor is placed exactly the same place in the shoe and is more or less the same size. The shoe is called Adistar or something: http://www.adidas-polar.com/phase2/index.html
- zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great, now i can have ipod earbuds for nike shoelaces... :]
