- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And what about the Nano whose screen broke from just sitting in a pocket? I'd call that reliable...
- Metman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No argument here.. Still have my Apple IIc and Apple Lisa which both work like champs still.
But alas... Appledom is starting bore me. Anyone else had enough of Go Apple! pep-squad? - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yah... because you can really compare the two when the mindset of the two are so different.
On the Apple side, it's akin to asking someone which religion they recommend. They'll overlook flaws because of their sheer devotion.
On the PC side, it's akin to asking someone which pen they recommend. You'll get nutty zealots who love their gel pens, or fine pts, but they'll be mostly indifferent.
They're just glorified calculators people. They do the job people need them to do, and they all have their flaws and problems, and you're dumb to think and waste your life arguing otherwise.
On the service side though, Apple offering better customer service doesn't suprise me. I've never called or dealt with them, but that extra purchase price has to account for something. Economics will get to them eventually, but at least for now, from what I hear, Apple service reps speak english. :-) - DKasler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Im not anti-apple, but this constant "pep-squad" (as Metman put it) is getting annoying. Its hard to get objective opinions on apple products anymore because people SEEM to blindly follow the "Apple is cool" bandwagon.
Personally, I'm all about the creative micro photo. (Finally released) - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My Dell has been rock solid for the past 3 years.
Power cord pulled accidently twice? Still works.
Power surge from a lightning storm? Still works.
Left on constantly download files that I don't wish to mention for two months? Still works. - twitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No digg. There support for OS X server is mad crazy poor. $795 per incident or reformat? I don't think so! It's Linux for me from here on out.
- goat2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"rolfmayo closely followed by dell!?!?!"
"why any sane person would recommend a Dell ***** to anyone."
maybe because theyre not *****? they use the same, for the most part, standard components that ANY pc manufacturer will use. i work at a computer repair shop, and i see all kinds of pcs through here. what people dont seem to get through their fanboy heads is that nowadays theres almost absolutely no proprietary components anymore. hp, compaq, gateway, etc all use standard stuff. - seriypshick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple, Most reliable brand. - *AGREE*
- dezi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0rolfmayo closely followed by dell!?!?!
- CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Remember that thing where people could get free iPod accessories from apple? After i found out about that (and got my ***** of course) i started thinking about how apple was pretty dedicated to let their customers get replacement accessories no questions asked.
- moiety, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Most reliable? Get Apple to have iTunes sync with my iPod photo without locking up, or the required weekly resets of my Apple Airport Expresses and Extreme and THEN we'll talk.
- jmyhasuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would have to strongly disagree with this claim. My girlfriend has sent her iBook back to Apple a good six times in 3 years. If not for Apple Care (I call it exotortion), they would have refused to fix the computer. The worst part is that they were reoccuring issues, even after new hardware had been replaced. In all, the logic board was replaced three times, the screen was replaced twice, and the power supply was replaced once. What ever happened to quality control?
When the last issue arose (logic board again), she expressed her extreme satisfaction; she had to send the computer back five separate occasions prior to this. She also demanded compensation - a new computer - because it was evident that the hardware used in the previous generation was shoddy at best. They refused, and made her send it back again.
Her brother, who has an identical iBook model, has the same hardware issues: logic board and screen issues. These reoccuring problems do not exactly instill quality assurance. - LuckyJack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still waiting to get wife's G3 back from it's fourth logic board replacement. My favorite line was when the kid at Apple answered my "What are my options?" with "Have you thought about buying a new one?".
Not an Apple hater, love the iBook (when it's not a paperweight). Just got burned badly with this logic board messiness. - MastaX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+05th ipod and it still doesnt work and now iTunes wont even run.......thnx apple....so from my personal experiences i strongly disagree
- JDub800, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been a Mac owner for years, bought a few, always been pretty reliable. Happy customer.
I did have a problem with a DVD burner in an old G4 800 DP switching from 2x to 1x for no apparent reason though. Could I get anyone to acknowledge it?!? Still overall, I'd say they were pretty solid - Definitely so compare to the PCs I've owned. Very pleased with my current G5 and PBook combo... - j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No digg. My iPod broke within the first 6 months of use. ***** hardware, bad support.
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, has anyone else noticed the people who whine about iPod (really, any premature portable device deaths) usually have homes with stuff thrown all over the place, CDs/DVDs out of their cases, fingerprints all over their displays, and dirty plates in the sink?
Just saying. What I consider 'abuse' most people consider wear and tear, and most people (especially young people) never learn how to treat electronic devices and media properly. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WTF? I'd own a dell and Apple before I thought about buying a Gateway. They should change their boxes from cow print to pictures of cow pies.
- jagnum1fan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMFG! Dell as the close number 2!?!?!?!?!?!??!? The only computers I have ever really had to fix (other than my own custom built one [becuase, I love *****' with it... ;) ]) are Dells. I have never seen a worse computer company in my whole life. Worste hardware and worste pre-installed software.
I can't comment on Apples, though, because I haven't ever really used one extensively enough. Although, I can say that my girlfriend's iPod is a POS - it crapped out within 6 monthes and won't accept songs on it anymore. She called them and they said since it's been more than 6 months, she has to pay for shipping even though there was a 1 year warranty on it and said it would take 3-4 weeks AFTER she sent it to them. - moiety, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fudgebrown: Lucky, you are.
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All my Apple products (imac g4 800mhz, powerbook 1.5ghz, powermac 2.7 x2) are running perfectly, even my 2nd gen ipod (not the one with the red buttons as many people get confused, the one before that), but then sice they are electronics anything can go wrong as with the ibook above, my advice get APP.
- lotus22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My e-machine is the most reliable thing to date.
- Heavy_C, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know about the most reliable brand, an Apple was the first store bought computer I've ever owned. But I'm defiantly tired of the Apple pep-squad. Apples are good for some stuff, other brands for other stuff. Let's give up the grudge, people.
- goat2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"moiety: i have none of those problems with the same hardware -"
cuz hardware cant be faulty - hyperpasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm. A lot of people have bad luck with Apple, but the statistics show they ARE more reliable. You can't "disagree" because they sent you seventeen defective iPods in a row, because if you do a big study, you'll find that in general they're statistically more reliable.
Also, computer parts have become a commodity. It's all about Bang for the Buck, Service, and Design. Some people like Dells because they're cheap. I don't because they're ugly and the support is outsourced. Also, Macs are VERY different from PCs. PCs have a comparitivly bad OS (if you disagree prevent specific evidence), run more software, get more viruses, and look damn ugly in general. Macs are WAY over-priced, have VERY sleek hardware and software, don't run everything under the sun, and don't get viruses. - bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Macs are reliable for the most part, but it does suck when something proprietary breaks that in the PC world would just need a quick trip to CompUSA to replace. That's less of an issue nowadays, but comes up occasionally still . . .
My G3 iBook suffered a logic board death, but has been fine ever since (a year and a half later). My PowerMac G4 has had every fan replaced except the case fan, but no other troubles. And my iMac DV (almost five years old) is still running strong. I haven't owned an iPod long enough to really comment.
Older Macs generally keep ticking (going back 15 years even). If one appears dead it's usually just a bad PRAM battery. - fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0moiety: i have none of those problems with the same hardware -
- skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not surprising, Apple rocks. :P yes i am biased.
- Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no doubt Apple is most reliable... not being biased.. my PCs last long as well.. but they always last at max 2 years and it's always the hard drive to go first..
i think the secret is that Apple's motherboard supplier is low-key and quality focused.
2 years? I've had my pc for 5 now. And how do Sony and Dell even get on there? Their products are crap, mainly Sony which puts out unreliable products... - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"A survey by consumer magazine "Which?", found that consumers were more likely to recommend Apple computers to their friends than any other brand"
thats far from reliable...since the reccomendations come only because they like their products, sure reliablity factors in but do a reliablity survey and you'll get far different results - wynnwill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i second the comments on the bad hardware. i had two ipods die and an iMac die. lots to like about apple products but i think it is a myth that they are more reliable.
- MikhoohkiM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My powerbook hasn't given my any problems
- Math-Sux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple customer service SUCKS!
As of today the Richmond, VA Apple Store has had my G5 for 2 months because of a logic board. After the first month they decided that the whole machine needed to be replaced and made a request from apple. Two days ago, after sitting on hold for over an hour I complained again and this time demanded compensation. Eventually one of their customer care people offered me an extra gig of ram. A gig of ram in no way compensates for the time (money) I lost having to use an old G4 for the past 2 months. I didn’t spend $3500 on a computer to play games - I need it for business. Turns out the extreme delay was because the Richmond, VA Apple Store screwed up the replacement order that they submitted. After a month of waiting for the replacement the apple store kept telling me that it would be in soon but they had no way of checking the status. The customer care person spoke to last told me it would have stayed on hold indefinitely. If I hadn't kept calling the 800# (on a daily basis lately) it may have never shipped. I wonder if it would have taken this long if I spent the $300 for their Apple ProCare crap???? - t35t0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pound for pound also the most expensive
- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no doubt Apple is most reliable... not being biased.. my PCs last long as well.. but they always last at max 2 years and it's always the hard drive to go first..
i think the secret is that Apple's motherboard supplier is low-key and quality focused. - ArcaneDevice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0for the price people pay for Apple hardware they should last a long time.
They still don't make them as well as they used to though. The 8000 series towers and the beige G3s were the best they ever made. - chevyorange, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"In a releated story: "Apple Name Brand with Most Fanboys""
I wonder why they have fans?
Maybe because they actually do rock. - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"apple always semms to sell me faulty Ipods and replace them with faulty ipods. So, I disagree"
You are either unlucky or you're running windows, sorry same thing. I have had an ipod since 2002 and the only thing that is wrong with it is not being able to use a remote since i've treated it rough, but the headphone socket works fine. I know people who treat their equipment particularly bad and they think they're being gentle. - BASK1104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0apple always semms to sell me faulty Ipods and replace them with faulty ipods. So, I disagree
- larsinio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0most reliable on charging massively inflated prices :O
they're the starbucks of the PC world - diggDoug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really like Tiger and for the most part I've been very pleased since Jaguar to now. However, I don't find their hardware to be anymore reliable than anyone else's, with one exception. My PowerBook Ti has had a new mainboard, two new LCD panels (although Apple wins, hands down for the image quality and color accuracy of their laptop displays), five combo drives, a new top cover (bad track pad), and two new airport cards. I'm not rough with it and I've never dropped it.
Every manufacturer has their issues, but I have a high regard for IBM hardware. Over the years I found their servers and workstations to be very reliable. Although the quality does seem to have fallen slightly since Lenovo purchased the hardware division, I still feel the Thinkpad is the best quality laptop I've seen. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>Im not anti-apple, but this constant "pep-squad" (as Metman put it) is getting

please listen. there is no blind following. there are very satisfied customers. years of very satisfied customers. if there is anything going on... its that after years of buying the best computer with the best OS with the best return on investment and listening to Microsoft fan-boys criticize with the most bizarre Gates worship... we are nodding and saying i told you so. and people that formerly were Microsoft fan-boys are now buying macs and saying, geez, you weren't lying. they are talking to you... the knuckle-headed ***** that can't say... damn i guess i was wrong. ***** off. we are tired of you. - sedgemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mac and Sony both have excellent product lines and they certainly have the proprietary elitist group locked up... people who love to backslap themselves by telling the world about their smart purchases.
- Bran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^^ More like the Mercedes of the PC world. Dell Being the Hyundai. Price it what you pay, Value is what you recieve in return. I'll pay extra for preformance/Build Quality/Professional Design.
- DEIx15x8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why wasn't eMachines mentioned at all, possibly because they weren't used in the survey. According to PC World's survey a few months ago on customer service, reliability, etc. eMachines was #1 with Apple 2nd and Dell 3rd.
- snyy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0apple computers are very reliable
Ipod are not reilabe at all there awful reliblity - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Bran
No they're not, it's all built and assembled in Malaysia and Taiwan. Same with most clothing and shoes, but in that case it's sweatshop labor. Apples are different in that they run PPC instead of x86s, but that'll soon change and it'll be more obvious you're paying more for the same thing.
Same with Starbucks coffee, you're overpaying for the brand name, with an undifferentied product. :-) - nomore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I agree about Apple being the most reliable... but what I don't get is why any sane person would recommend a Dell ***** to anyone.
- FriedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, perfect week for my iBook to die.
http://www.jason3d.com/blog/2005/10/03/ibook-paper-weight/
Come to think of it, both iPods I've owned had bad batteries, part of the headphone jack broke, and now my iBook died. I'm not seeing it anymore. -
