- gamebittk, on 10/12/2007, -13/+96What about Nintendo... They've revolutionized an entire industry.
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -35/+107Huh? Apple is the most innovative company for 2006 based on products from this year?
What did they honestly do last year that was so innovative? Switch to Intel? - Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -24/+69Innovative?
Apple innovate on nothing, they market exceptionally well though. - pwnrOiNK, on 10/12/2007, -8/+46Where the hell is Nintendo ? (...only place 39)
should have though the Wii deserved Nintendo a higher place - digitalarcanum, on 10/12/2007, -23/+52yeah they're innovative.. Innovative on jackin up prices on the same hardware everyone else uses. Seriously, why the hell isn't Google or Nintendo beating Apple?
- blapierre, on 10/12/2007, -31/+59Apple fanboys overrun poll? What's new?
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27They weren't publicly released. Nobody had heard of the iPhone or the tv thingy, they were just rumours.
- Katana314, on 10/12/2007, -41/+57Are you kidding? THEY INVENTED THE MP3 PLAYER WITH THE IPOD! Oh wait, did they? Hang on...
THEY MADE THE FIRST EVER DEVICE TO WATCH DIGITAL VIDEOS ON TV-wait, no, forgot TiVo...
THEY MADE THE FIRST PHONE THAT CAN DO STUFF-...except for the Razr and blackberry and.......yeah.
Um...they changed their company name?...in a really...creative.......way? - SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23This must be the most retarded list ever. First, I dont agree with Apple being first, they havent actually done very much for a while now. Sony shouldnt be on the list at all. They didnt innovate a single thing with the PS3. I'm not being a fanboy; it's the truth. Also, I'm in doubt of Microsoft being the 5th most innovative company. Many of the other entries also seem like odd choices.
- robinator08, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23The real problem with this list is its compiled by BusinessWeek, meaning 'innovative' really means 'innovative increased money making'. It has nothing to do with how cool the products are, just the business aspect.
The people who voted for the various companies only really had advertising and stock prices as references, making BP, Exxon, Apple and Microsoft look awfully innovative. - antitab, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17"exploiting open source software"
Open source isn't always meant to be a two-way street. The BSD license was created with this in mind. Blame the projects for licensing this way, Apple's not "exploiting" *****, they're doing exactly what the creators allowed for. - black|math, on 10/12/2007, -13/+25Devices like appleTV have existed before though and it does not offer anything new.
- SillyRabbits, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Do they really expect me to click through all 51 slides? What ever happen to a simple list where you can click on the things you actually want more information about?
- greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Most of the stuff you list are just incremental updates.
Example: the iPod 5G was released in November 2005 (that's when I bought mine, anyway). The only big new products since 2006 to now have been the Macbook and the 8core Pro. - gamebittk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17@meatmcguffin
Oh, and that was what? Like 20 years ago? This is a 2006 poll. - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14it's not for 2006, note where it says "2006 rank" - so I guess it's a ranking based on what they've done from this time last year to now.
- Zap2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Wow...Nintendo shoukd be alot higher....I really don't see how people can say the PS3 is more innovative then the Wii. People might like the PS3 more, but the Wii Remote is a HUGE step in innovation
- SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Apple has innovated hugely in user interfaces and functional industrial design. Saying they steal is fair, but they do contribute a lot as well.
- LemmingJesus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I like the iNnovative names they come up with.
- Morky, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I'm sorry, but that phone they demoed is ***** awesome. Here are the features no other phone has:
1. A decent email client.
2. A real web browser and the means to use it effectively
3. Browseable voicemail.
4. Easy to use conference calling
5. SMS conversations that are easy to read
6. Nicer iPod than the iPod.
Am I wrong? What other phones beat the iPhone as demoed in these areas? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8any list that includes microsft is a BS list.
any list that ranks walmart above target and amazon is a BS list. - meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8You're conveniently forgetting about Apple's continuing contribution to the webkit project
- robinator08, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14They've gotten exploiting open source software down pretty well.
Also, most of these companies don't deserve being on this list, but this is the best we have from the biggest companies worldwide, since when is Best Buy innovative? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7and... especially... any list that ranks sony that far ahead of nintendo is a complete BS list.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8> .. with the 3D desktop graphics engine, linux fundament to serve advanced users and practical design
Kamino, you really have NO IDEA what you're saying, do you ? Well, you're somewhat onto something later on in your post but dear me, that first line was amazingly bad. - knelto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"No exchange support makes it a toy."
You sound like Ballmer. Wrong target audience. Most common people don't even know what the hell Exchange is. But hey, it's an iPod, makes calls, surfs the internet and you can access your Gmail or Hotmail from it... most common people can relate to that. - SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7^^ yeah, but on the page, they only mention the PS3, which has zero innovation. Lets see what it does...
* Same controller as PS2 but wireless, without rumble and with gyro (basically) - not very innovative
* Great graphics - not innovative
* Blu-ray - this might be the closest to being innovative, even though it doesnt actually benefit the games, or hardly so
* Online play - not innovative (especially since 360 does it better, price aside)
* Umm... quietness? They did a fantastic job making it quiet. Not sure it'd count as innovative.
Anything else? - championchap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So only MEN have jobs?
Also, get your ass down to any design agency, or over to Pixar and see what they use!
Macs for designing and Linux boxes for rendering. - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In other news, in a "most liked company" list, Apple would probably also top it... I have a feeling this poll just might be clouded about what some think of the company, not what new products they've innovated. It probably also depend on how influental they are, which is why you mostly just see the bigger ones there despite others probably being more innovative.
- zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -30/+34They made completely computer illiterate people switch their more expensive product just so they can fit in with the "in" crowd.
- mykos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Did anyone catch who won the award for "most cult-like following"? I'm having trouble finding it.
- brasso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5But being the most innovative company three times in a row isn't really that innovative now is it?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8
"I'm aware of that, but it seems a little stupid so say that Apple isn't an innovative company when it clearly is."
Past != Present
They may have been in the past, but now, they're more into marketing than innovating - SOS84, on 10/12/2007, -17/+20What has Apple every done besides take other people's ideas, put them in a pretty package and bring them to the market with catchy advertisements?
- SOS84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3At first glance the PS3 may not seem innovative but the impact that the Cell Processor is having is huge. People just do not know about it because as long as it is doing its job, nobody cares, but to the hardware designers it is really big and it is quite innovative. Of course IBM and Toshiba were also heavily involved in its developement.
- RyTakahashi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The tag line on the article states "the most innovative in the eyes of senior executives." Senior executives aren't going to be impressed by the Wii, but they will pay more attention to stock prices. According this this criteria, Apple wins.
- greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10@ catmistake
You are correct. Apple switched to the Core Duo chip, and then the Core 2 Duo chip. So did Dell. And HP. And Lenovo. And Toshiba, Fujitsu, ...(you get the idea). I'd say that switching to the Multi-core Intel processor cannot qualify a company to be innovative. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Could not be more different? Let's see, integrated graphics, check, custom motherboard, check, custom power supply, check, all mounted behind a flat panel monitor, check, All in one design, check. Come on, who do you think you are kidding? I have one sitting about six feet from me as I type. It has a 1GHz Pentium 3 and was produced in 2000"
Really? Sounds to me more like the 20th Anniversary Mac which came out in 1997.
All in one computers have been around for awhile. Apple had made a lot of them starting with the freaking original Mac 128. Are they most innovative? I don't know, but for a company that was written off as dead some 5-6 years ago, they seem to be doing pretty well. - DAVIBE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nintendo did not invent the Wiimote, they just incorporated. !!!SHOCK!!!BLASPHEMY!!!
Other smaller have implemeted that technology in there cheaper videogame system way before Nintendo.
Nintendo simply brought it to a larger audience & made it more stylish. - YossarianDent, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10catmistake:
Do shut up. - hassanchop13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i thought the list was over the past year. DS is 2 years old now, so is the PSP. they aren't really relevant.
- maxtypezero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2interesting article that could have used a better headline
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I'd like to see Sun on there. They're doing some awesome work with ZFS, OpenOffice and Solaris, and have been great about contributing to open source. It would be great if Apple took some cues on relations with the open source community and their customers from Sun. If Apple has earned its spot, however, it is because they understand the importance of usable and specialized software in the consumer electronics market.
- SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Macs are for girls."
Random claim of the day - drummerant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Perhaps we shouldn't just focus on Apple's innovation in terms of products alone...
Look at their retail store strategy for example...
How many other computing/electronics companies could you say are building more REAL stores for people to
get hands on with their products?... The Apple stores also provide unique services such as personal training
and workshops, not to mention on-site repairs. - Redemption289, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Don't get me wrong. I like apple products (eye candy + more stability than Windows... how can you not), but they aren't exactly innovative. If you look to their OS, things like Time Machine will be the most innovative thing they have. These are COOL ideas, but its not as if apple invented them. They just took ideas from a bunch of different sources and integrated them into their products. (Same happened with the iPhone. What, you think apple invented the touch screen phone? Go to Japan.) I do believe that they are pretty, and generally useful (at the price of being expensive), but innovative? Give me a break. This award should have easily gone to Nintendo who revolutionized the way games are played. Apple just thought up a way to make yuppies and fanboys fork over another 2 large. I don't think that qualifies as innovation.
- hassanchop13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@SeBBBe
There are exactly 3 setnences for the sony section. The first discusses their move into software as opposed to just hardware. The second discusses the home thing, with the online virtual world, which although has been done before, Home has the potential to take it to the next level (just as the Wii was not the first place with motion controls, just the first to make it popular and more fun than before). Then it winds it up with a discussion of TV's and cell phones. It hardly discusses anything, let alone just the PS3. - SOS84, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Could not be more different? Let's see, integrated graphics, check, custom motherboard, check, custom power supply, check, all mounted behind a flat panel monitor, check, All in one design, check. Come on, who do you think you are kidding? I have one sitting about six feet from me as I type. It has a 1GHz Pentium 3 and was produced in 2000.
- SOS84, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10Sure Apple has released a lot of products but nothing innovative. The IMac' design is a copy of the old IBM Netvista computers of the Pentium 3 era. The MacPro is OK but again no real innovation other than sticking a substandard workstation in a fancy Lian Li inspired case. The displays do not feature options found on other models and actually share the same panel with competitors priced hundreds lower with more features. Many of the MacBook notebook computers are made on the same AsusTek line alongside several Dell laptops, the only difference is one is put in a silver or black case, the other is not. The IPod even used Creative software and is of lesser quality and more expensive than comparable Zen products.
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apple? For what? iPod? The iPhone?
You know, what about SpaceX, the leading corporation in privatizing space launches?
I say it's VERY biased. There are many companies that are way more innovative, though not so heard of. -
