- nace33, on 10/04/2008, -13/+66I would rather that Apple take their time and get the notification system right.
- bignah, on 10/04/2008, -3/+37It sucks that they weren't able to get the Push Notifications released on time. However, as someone who can become frustrated with the buggyness of their phone, I am glad they decided to scrap it from 2.1 and work on bug fixes instead.
- Wootstapler, on 10/04/2008, -1/+18Dugg for picture and creepy doctor face.
- RyanW2050, on 10/04/2008, -2/+17The person who wrote this article is uninformed. The push feature of exchange and .me works fine. It's push applications from the app store that were promised. (instant messenger apps that actually work while not opened, etc.)
- nace33, on 10/04/2008, -4/+16Never mind, I changed my mind because everybody knows how to avoid unforeseen circumstances, so no one should ever make mistakes. Good point.
- Tezgno, on 10/04/2008, -0/+11Apple never stated that there were issues. They did, however, state that the push notification service would be available mid September (when Mr. Jobs first announced the whole push notification thing).
- indraneel24, on 10/03/2008, -2/+12There's not really any sort of notification system, just nothing shuts down.
- Swift2, on 10/04/2008, -3/+12Somebody at work sends me an Exchange message, my iPhone beeps within twenty seconds. I don't know what's working, but I'm happy.
- valis, on 10/04/2008, -6/+14Is it me or does that article seem a bit whiny?
- Tezgno, on 10/04/2008, -0/+8No business is waiting around for MobileMe push. That's not what push notification is. The push notification service (announced by Apple to be available by September, which has now passed) is for third party apps to be able to receive notifications (through Apple's service) so that they can act upon that notification without the application having to be running. This will obviously be useful for people who create apps like instant messaging apps, in which the notification would alert the app that someone has sent you an instant message, etc.
- drlha, on 10/04/2008, -0/+7Dugg down for a question that makes no sense. Do you actually understand what these push notifcations that Apple promised in September are?
- mklcom, on 10/04/2008, -0/+6"The great thing about this: it scales... it's a unified push notification service for all devs. It preserves battery life and maintains performance. And it all works over the air -- WiFi and cellular. Available in September, but next month we'll be seeding to devs. This has been an update of the SDK, thank you!"
That is from the WWDC 2008 keynote, in June. - SuperJimmyJimbo, on 10/04/2008, -3/+9apple missed a deadline?!?! Stop the presses!!
- Tenoq, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5Same thing happens to Microsoft on every release of their software. :p
- MavRevMatt, on 10/04/2008, -13/+17Then they shouldn't say they're going to do something, and not do it.
- jjustin01, on 10/04/2008, -3/+6Jailbreak your phone and download backgrounder. Problem solved. :)
And for those saying their email has push and you don't understand the problem is: This has nothing to do with email services. This has to do with both third party apps and corporate IT apps that would benefit from push technology. I for one would like to use my iPhone the same as I did with my Blackberry and Blackjack. I could login to a chat client and actually have it keep me logged in even if the app wasn't open. I think this is one of the iPhone's biggest set backs. Phones that you can get for free manage to handle this, yet this bad ass iPhone can't. And it's not that it can't, it's because Steve Jobs likes to tell people what they want and not actually listen to what they are saying they want. He does the same crap with MMS. He can't seem to grasp that not everyone has email on their phones or they may not have a data plan.
And would Digg please fix the stupid script that freaks out when I am trying to type a comment! It either causes the text to freak out and jump everywhere or it causes the text box to jump up and down in height. - Tenoq, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3Sounds like a lot of tech companies. Actually, sounds like any company. :(
- skidooer, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2Considering that it doesn't exist yet, except in some BETA releases, how exactly can it work fine for you?
- Tron007, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2hopefully they release Push along with MMS and Copy/paste....and while we are at it...give us flash!
- dsalmon9, on 10/04/2008, -4/+6No, it's not you. The article is whiny and based on bad information. I don't know if the person who wrote the article is a tech writer or whatever, but he doesn't seem to know that push email is only possible on MobileMe, Yahoo, or off a Microsoft Exchange server. He doesn't indicate that he was attempting to connect to any of these when his push email didn't work.
Apple has clearly missed the promised date for push notifications for other software though. That sucks but I don't think it's a deal breaker for many businesses or individual users of the iPhone. Most people/businesses are looking for the push email option and that's been working, or it least it works fine for me using MobileMe. - MrViklund, on 10/04/2008, -3/+5Buried as spam because of gizmodo.com. Those kids are not worthy writing about anything Apple or iPhone.
- JohnnyDIGGme, on 10/04/2008, -0/+2Whiny AND poorly written.
I think by "pooling the servers" he meant POLLING? - stealthspc, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1Apple has already said this feature will be delayed a bit, so they can "get it right this time" (a direct quote from Steve Jobs).
Would it be a better idea to release it buggy? No. - Oddish, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1And your battery will last about 7 minutes.
- dimplemonkey, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1Not only is push not working but the fetching intervals are not working either! C'mon, Apple, before I start typing things like - Blackberry FTW.
- farfromsubtl, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1Thank you.
- mlLk, on 10/05/2008, -0/+1I ***** APPLE SO HARD IT TURNED INTO AN ORANGE!
- phatphil, on 10/05/2008, -0/+1You don't diss Apple and win. Ever!
- juliohm, on 10/05/2008, -0/+1Ha!
Way to keep "pushing" the deadline... - iErika, on 10/05/2008, -1/+2I'd rather wait. Apple rocks!
- stealthspc, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1Missing a deadline?! Like Vista did?
- texanpenguin, on 10/06/2008, -0/+0And a pony!
- PeterVine, on 02/28/2009, -0/+0If you're looking for some new and used discount Apple Iphone's take a look at http://www.discountcellphoneheaven.com it's got a huge range of Iphone's.
- Wailord, on 10/04/2008, -3/+3Why so serious?
- RyanW2050, on 10/04/2008, -3/+3use google.com to prevent diggdown.
- pyrates, on 10/04/2008, -6/+5Said like a true fan boi. But if the same thing happened to Microsoft, you would all be saying EPIC FAIL.
- colonels1020, on 10/04/2008, -7/+6http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u224/SaneMadnes ...
- bradleyland, on 10/04/2008, -4/+3You have an uncanny grasp of the obvious.
- iBros, on 10/05/2008, -1/+0Well, that just about settles it. The company is now officially finished. Kaput. Dead on arrival. Expired. Pushing up daisies. Defunct. Limp. Done for. Spent. At room temperature. Stiff. Belly up. Snuffed out. Worm food.
No wonder it has lost 50% of its closing value in the past year. NOW we know, and thank Gawd for Dan Moren's invaluable insight! - inactive, on 10/04/2008, -3/+2Thank you netburnr for this useful app
- farfromsubtl, on 10/04/2008, -6/+2I love it. Dugg down for a legitimate question.
- WomensUnderwear, on 10/05/2008, -7/+3***** APPLE
- blorc, on 10/04/2008, -6/+2Push works fine for me. Not saying it's perfect for everyone, but I think it's working well for most people.
- farfromsubtl, on 10/04/2008, -8/+3When did Apple officially acknowledge these issues and states that it would be done for September? I didn't know that they had made any statements.
- texizboy, on 10/04/2008, -9/+3What business is sitting around waiting for MobileMe push whatever? Any company that's buying iPhones for their workers is most likely going to have enough money for an exchange server, so as to the iPhone not being the solution they were looking for, I call BS.
- Wailord, on 10/04/2008, -9/+3Well, I guess it's better than a half-assed attempt at a system that doesn't work.
Edit: Oh, and dugg for the picture, too... what's the name of the font that Giz uses in those speech bubbles? - Mjeacoma, on 10/04/2008, -12/+6It's a new Apple - this type of delay would never had happened 3 - 4 years ago
- netburnr, on 10/03/2008, -12/+3Whats your point?
You want notifications of a new IM, okay well if palringo is still running in the background, tada, you get the sound/vibrate.
You want the woot tracker running so it reminds you at midnight, background it, tada you get the notification.
It works, yes, its not the official steve-ified stuff as promised, but it works. - netburnr, on 10/03/2008, -19/+4Not really needed anymore if you just jailbreak and get the "backgrounder" app from Cydia.
