LOUD NOISES!! - umbrellainabin, on 08/03/2008, -14/+61i seriously don't get you guys. iTunes is providing a service by SELLING video. YOU ARE PAYING FOR THE ABILITY TO HAVE THE VIDEO FOREVER AND PUT IT ON YOUR IPOD/IPHONE WHATEVER.
YOU GET WATER FOR FREE OUT OF A TAP BUT YOU CAN ALSO PAY FOR IT IN A BOTTLE - octoberism, on 08/04/2008, -2/+33"YOU GET WATER FOR FREE OUT OF A TAP"
...since when? - UrinalPooper, on 08/03/2008, -10/+41Dr. Horrible was taken down for awhile and then put back up on Hulu (limited time only)... since the DVD isn't ready yet, paying US$4.00 for a high quality version of all three acts was a no-brainer for me.

...
Obviously you don't care about video quality! - ObscuredCelery, on 08/04/2008, -3/+24Ya people are so dumb, don't you just love that feature of Hulu where with one button click you can download it and transfer it to your iPod? Or how you can watch it where you don't have broadband internet access.... oh wait you can't do that with Hulu. I think this is just proof that people are willing to pay for the convenience of the iTunes store. Must have been a slow news day.
- davidlick, on 08/04/2008, -1/+20I don't know about wherever you live, but around these parts we have what's called a water bill.
- Kragnerac, on 08/04/2008, -1/+19Isn't the content on Hulu Ad-supported?
- colincornaby, on 08/04/2008, -0/+13Maybe people like having a local copy? Maybe people like having a copy they can load on an iPod. Maybe people like having a copy they can stream to other devices? Maybe people like having a copy that doesn't have ads?
Seriously, this is dumb. This is like asking "Why would you buy a TV series on DVD when you can watch it online?" - darkone_05, on 08/04/2008, -0/+13I payed the $4 in iTunes just to support Joss's movement, and I will gladly buy the DVD and soundtrack when they are released.. Who cares about apple in this equation.
- Linh, on 08/04/2008, -0/+11This is just proof people will really support something when it's actually GOOD. I bought it off itunes before it was available on hulu (between the first free showing and release on hulu). I will most likely order the DVD too for the extras and soundtrack (which I hope is part of the dvd...)
- 37prime, on 08/04/2008, -1/+12Lame article.
A lot of TV shows are available for "free" through through the airwaves, cable, etc. The studios are selling them on DVD's and digital downloads.
Why pinpoint Apple? The fact is "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" and Stephen King's "N." are made available on iTunes Store by the studios who produced them.
I wouldn't be surprised if the article author is a huge fan of Paul Thurrott and Rob Enderle.
Buried for being Ultra LAME. - gllopc, on 08/04/2008, -1/+10It's free from water fountains and the taps at work, etc. Although, you could argue that you're paying taxes for that water or you have to be employed in order to use the taps at work.
Well ***** me - you're both right. - inactive, on 08/03/2008, -15/+23for you, the term "no-brainer" sounds just right
- khsheehan, on 08/04/2008, -4/+11Your correct, and I don't think that buying water in a bottle is really a justifiable thing.
- HaloZero, on 08/04/2008, -0/+7Technically, you didn't "pay for it", you supported it in another way.
- ObscuredCelery, on 08/04/2008, -2/+8Thanks for telling me how to consume my media, I had no idea what was best for me until you came along. Seriously though there are a lot of reasons people buy from iTunes. Instant gratification, ease of use, and zero travel or wait time for the DVD. I have converted my own DVD using Handbrake and the like, it's not hard but it takes awhile and some people just don't want to mess with it I don't think that makes them "Apple faithful" more likely they "have a life" and don't want to mess with that crap. Naturally some of us have found more convenient ways of getting media, that don't involve Apple or DVDs.
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -0/+6sure... who here has ever paid for a bottle of water?? same thing right?
- streak, on 08/04/2008, -1/+7It also bothers me that I bought a pass from iTMS and it lacks the commercials that I so enjoy wading through--and waiting through--on hulu.con That's not the NBC Experience I've come to expect. What was Jobs thinking?
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -0/+5Yeah, ***** paying for things – I watch everything on Hulu on the train on my way to work...
oh, wait. - inactive, on 08/04/2008, -0/+5Floppy *****
- streak, on 08/04/2008, -1/+6Yes, and by my calculation it took more than 11 hours for diggers to figure this one out. Impressive.
- PrometheusBorn, on 08/04/2008, -1/+6Unless you visit Mexico.
- peznex, on 08/04/2008, -0/+5Disappearing pencil?
- stlcadet11, on 08/04/2008, -0/+5comparable to getting free video off of hulu by paying your isp for internet service...
- robertnealan, on 08/04/2008, -1/+5I LOVE LAMP.
- earthtoandy, on 08/04/2008, -1/+5I bought Dr Horrible from iTunes because I wanted the artists to get paid. Its a brilliant show, I gladly paid.
Not to mention a lot of people buying on iTunes helps get the word out. Its a powerful tool to building an audience - peznex, on 08/04/2008, -0/+4I don't comment much on Digg but I just had to agree that this is a stupid article. You can go on youtube and find almost any song for free to listen to so Apple is also making money on Free Web Music?!
This is terrible logic. - tidu, on 08/04/2008, -1/+5Wanna see a magic trick?
- thallium205, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3ZOMG PAYING FOR VIDEO???? LETS GET THE FCC TO FORCE STEVE NOT TO DO THIS!!!!!!!!! FREE ZE INTERWEBZ!
/sarcasm - ConfusedCartman, on 08/04/2008, -1/+4***** SALT.
- Flambo, on 08/04/2008, -1/+4Don't worry, none of the purchase price of Dr. Horrible goes to support the people who made it.
I can't speak on the Stephen King media, but the purchases of Dr. Horrible have nothing to do with "apple faithful". I didn't have an i-Tunes account prior to the release of Dr. Horrible, but when it went on sale I registered one and bought the season pass to show my support for Mr. Whedon's work. - diemunkiesdie, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3Man, way to get me all excited about going over to Hulu and downloading all this stuff by using a feature I hadn't noticed, then snatching it all away!
- headzoo, on 08/04/2008, -1/+4What does it say? That consumers don't do a Google search on every single show/movie they are about to buy, to see if it happens to be offered for free somewhere else?
- leamanc, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3Let's get super pedantic, and say even your well is not free water. It requires electricity to pump water from the well, which isn't free. Or, if it's a hand-pump well, it takes your time. We all know time=money.
- hagridore, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3I paid for Dr. Horrible because I wanted to support the crew. I wasn't tricked as the artice claims so many were.
- neodude237, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Buried.
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2I will never get these 15 seconds back.
- tyler0is0sexy, on 08/04/2008, -3/+5No, I don't believe it does.
- xsuite, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Unless you live in/visit a place where the water is undrinkable. Then its a no brainer - shell out 2 bucks for the lovely chance to NOT have explosive, vesuvian diarrhea .
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -1/+3I concur with you ObscuredCelery. Why the ***** does everyone who buys stuff from Apple have to be part of the "apple faithful." I've got a nine-year-old niece who buys tons of music from iTunes. Does that make her part of the "apple faithful?" I think if you asked her whether she prefers Apple or Microsoft or Sony or whatever, she would just look at you with a blank face.
iTunes works for people because THEY LIKE IT. There's no strange Apple voodoo involved. If Microsoft or the freaking McDonalds corporation had created iTunes, people would still like it. - jave8u, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2There was a direct feed on drhorrible.com but after it was on iTunes for a while, they then embedded all three acts from Hulu. Go check it now. If you meant the itunes version works everywhere, my bad
- thallium205, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2I have a well. It is free.
- BZKyle, on 08/04/2008, -2/+4Lots of people from outside the US (Where Hulu doesn't work) may be buying it also.
- supguy, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2I DO!!!!!!
- voidptr, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2I tried watching Dr. Horrible on Hulu, it crashed my browser twice.
So I paid $4, bought a copy I can keep on iTunes, and watched it fullscreen on my TV instead of a tiny box inside my browser. - joe28753, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2do you really love lamp or are you just saying that?
- kawaiirobo, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1I have a strong feeling you only commented because you hate apple, and honestly, that's kinda pathetic. And to agree with everyone else who's commented, just because it's 'useless for you' doesn't mean it's useless for someone else, correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt the world revolves around you, unless your the sun, then my apologies.
- timdorr, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1And this is exactly why it's legal for RedHat to sell Linux. In this particular case, you're paying for the content to be available without ads, without an internet connection, and on a variety of mobile devices. Oh, and to support the artists who created this (Seriously, Joss and crew deserves some cash for Dr. Horrible!).
- housewarmer, on 08/04/2008, -3/+4Don't be a tool. As I'm sure many others have pointed out, the products are different. Yes, the content is the same, but there's a vast difference between web video which is restricted to computers and tends to be ephemeral and a downloadable, archiveable video file which can be played back on multiple devices.
So in short, ***** off. -
