- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33@tmarc "I don't understand how apple plans to sell anymore pro's to anyone since gamers typically avoid macs and graphics don't tend to matter much for anyone else."
I guess you've never done video editing, 3D rendering, a lot of work in Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign or any other graphic oriented software. Those all depend heavily on the graphics capability of the machine, and having integrated graphics is a serious handicap for serious software.
The MacBook Pro with it's X1600 is targeted to Apple's bread and butter audience, creative professionals, and rightfully so.
Contrary to what you may be interested in, there is more to graphics hardware than gaming. - merz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19No, the Pro is the "better" model, performance and feature wise.
Though the Macbook does have lower price and (alledged) longer battery life going for it. - StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The new MacBook supports lid closed operation! Look at the dual displays part of the spec sheet
- Cam_86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Honestly, if they were all priced the same, i would prob. go with the 2end/3rd tier Macbook. Better battery life, smaller footprint, look and weight are all more important to me, then the larger screens, and metal body.
And yeah, i did just buy a new laptop a few weeks ago.
Yeah, it wasn't a mac.
Yeah, it was at the same price point
and most importantly...
yeah... i wish i held off for the macbook. - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+76 hours of battery life on the Macbook sure beats out 4.5 Hours on the Pro
- aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The pro has a larger screen with a higher res, dedicated ATI x1600 mobility gfx with 128/256MB, DUAL link DVI (supports 30" Cinema display), ExpressCard/34 slot, an aluminum finish, VGA adapter included, a larger default HD size, and a DVD-+R/RW burner.

"i just figure that most people doing that, like me, use a desktop for that kind of thing...video editing along with those others not only demand graphics but also a lot of space, video especially, and a true "PRO", it would seem to me would probably do that kind of thing on a G5"
You're still missing the point: portability. Take for example, a filmmaker who shoots on location in Asia. There's no easy way to bring a G5 tower and display safely and easily, so a MBP with a few external hard drives is a no brainer.
"usually requires precision with the mouse and keyboard shortcuts out the ass which is something i'd much rather have a keyboard for"
The MBP keyboard is a great laptop keyboard, key combinations flow easily on it. And come on, a bluetooth mouse is small, and easy to pack along on any trip.
MacBook Pros are going to continue to sell just fine to the audience they're intended to, despite the availability of the MacBooks, just like the PowerBooks did when the iBook was available.
@nogami
"Nothing else you mentioned benefit more than slightly between the macbook and the pro - it's all 2D stuff which any video card since about 1998 can blow through without any difficulty at all."
Try uncompressed HD video on a 64mb integrated card. It's not pretty. - jeblis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Great. Now a link to a spec chart on apple's site is considered news.
I'm gonna submit this as my next digg story: Apple's main site: http://www.apple.com - davdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It still does everything it did yesterday.
- kenz0r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7gah, i wish apple included the 1.83 GHz MacBook Pro
its kind of sad to see my once top of the line Apple notebook "Out of Production"
=/
whatever, its still beats my old 450 MHz G4! - seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes when comparing the MacBook vs. MacBook Pro, the MacBook pro does come ahead (duh), but come on it is not that much better than the new MacBooks. When you consider that for the starting prices of the MacBook vs. the MacBook Pro, you could buy 2 MacBooks for $200 more dollars than it would cost to buy 1 MacBook Pro. I feel confident saying that the bang for the buck award goes to the MacBook.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6you're right, i agree, and actually i do use the entire adobe CS2 and macro 8 and premiere pro, so yes i do know about that, i just figure that most people doing that, like me, use a desktop for that kind of thing...video editing along with those others not only demand graphics but also a lot of space, video especially, and a true "PRO", it would seem to me would probably do that kind of thing on a G5, me myself, I'll stick with my pc, it is a good point though and i guess i could see that being somewhat of an issue but mobile graphic design isn't exactly practical, usually requires precision with the mouse and keyboard shortcuts out the ass which is something i'd much rather have a keyboard for. I do agree with you somehwat though.
- martianbob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I gotta say that I'm a bit of a Mac fanboy. I love the hardware. I love the OS. I'm definitely going to buy a Macbook Pro this summer.
Having said that - this is not news. It's not even a review, it's a feature comparison on the Apple Store site! How, in the name of all that is good and holy, does this deserve to be a front page story?!
No digg. - Jonny5alive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The MacBook Pro also has a bigger screen, illuminated keyboard, metal case and express card slot.
- kenz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@tmarc, many photographers use their laptops for direct shooting on to hard drive, likewise, many people are on the go with work and want to have their workstation wherever they are. Ever photoshopped in starbucks?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3its there as a possibility, look closer
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"I guess you've never done video editing, 3D rendering, a lot of work in Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign or any other graphic oriented software. Those all depend heavily on the graphics capability of the machine, and having integrated graphics is a serious handicap for serious software."
Integrated video can handle all of that stuff without breaking a sweat. The only thing that high-end gfx cards are really good for these days are 3D applications (which is to say, games). Nothing else you mentioned benefit more than slightly between the macbook and the pro - it's all 2D stuff which any video card since about 1998 can blow through without any difficulty at all.
The only difference might be "3D rendering", but for serious applications, even a pro doesn't have the horsepower to keep-up with high-end openGL cards for CAD workstations and the like. And that's only for 3D design work, not actual rendering output using a graphics card to write final images to disk - that's pretty rare (most renderers are software-based, not hardware based). - vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3well integrated video doesn't take as much power to run as a dedicated graphics solution, not to mention the 20% more screen space, which basically means 20% more power required for the backlight and lcd panel..
- kartack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One thing I noticed that I was surprised at is that they are adding the "Extended Desktop Mode" to the MacBooks. The iBook line never had this ability, only the ability to mirror the desktop to the output. A few years ago when I bought my 12" PowerBook that was one of the things that pushed me to a PowerBook over an iBook.
- chota, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, you get to choose between a 5400 RPM 120 GiB, or a 7200 RPM 100 GiB. On my 17" I opted for the smaller but faster drive.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not $200, $150
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2old macs do to if you know what your doing...
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36 hours is wishful thinking to be honest, maybe if you turned your screen brightness and all you did was move the mouse every 3 minutes when the battery was brand spanking new.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd wait if I were you Pros should shift into Core 2 Duo's around august-october since apple likes to stay ahead of everyone else
- adinb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I *really* like the extended desktop, closed lid, and mirroring video modes. Just wish it didn't use ::barf:: shared video memory. The Intel integrated graphics wouldn't be *that* bad if they just had dedicated video memory.
- sedition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yah.. well.. sweeping generalizations and inaccurate information is what internet is all about! Net Nuetrality Now! :)
- mntpng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think I'll buy the $1099 model since I think it's the best value. The difference between $1099 and $1299 macbook is slight processor speed and dvd burner. I'm thinking I'll get a faster external dvd burner and max out the memory. Having more ram will surely make up for the slower processor speed and perhaps even extend the battery life tad bit.
- Undefined, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the macbook pro is just waiting for the merom or core duo 2 processor to be released. And it won't be long before the pro gets a bump to 2.33 ghz core duo in the meantime. The macBook will always be the consumer product while the MacBook Pro will always be the 'PRO' product. I couldn't imagine a professional buying the MacBook. The MBP is the closest thing to a mobile desktop replacement so far, and will continue this trend.
- sedition, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Fashion Statement - Black. I spent $200 for this color!
- cliffosj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The graphics chipset makes a huge difference, the x1600 is a fast for an internal card. No one seems to remember that apple rebuilt is graphics architecture to make use of the processing power of the GPU, aperture makes heavy use of the GPU for Filter effects among other things.
- gleepskip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2eBay awaits your sale...
- Saxonx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What kind of Speed enhancements are you getting? Im also wondering how much of a difference there is between the Macbook Pro 15inch 2.16 and 2.0 models. Anyone got some benchmarks?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1considering intel is set to release the Core 2 Duo's in late august/september that could make a lot of sense, leave the MacBooks on the Core Duo, up the Pro to the Core 2 Duo's
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd consider picking up a macbook, but the new keyboard has me worried (I quite like the keyboard on my current PB G4), and the low-end gfx in the macbook (shared system memory... gah), worries me...
I would've thought they could put at least a low-end Radeon in there... Maybe like an X300 or equivilent?
Other than that, I'd consider buying one... - gothicx00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You'll have to wait for the next line of dual cores to come out before you even start to see speed close to that.... the yonah i do believe will end it's life span around 2.3 at the most....
- stalky14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They could have at least kicked in 256MB more of RAM on the black one or something. I like the black one, but I couldn't pay $200 more for it just for the sake of color and a little more HD space just on principle. Oh well, maybe this feature/price point stuff will straighten out by the time I can actually afford to buy one... hopefully this fall. Maybe 10.5 will be out then too.
- kenz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1theyre all going to upgrade at some point or another, look at the history of the powerbook for example
- raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really thought this would be the year I replaced my trusty but slow 3 pound Dell with a 3 pound Mac notebook.... ah well, maybe next year.
- kenz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1but if i could get more power for the same price then i would rather have that
- drunkenoaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Firewire 800 on the 17" MBP is also a big factor for those in the video editing community. They went mental when it wasn't specified on the 15" MBPs
- Cam_86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, the GMA950 is better then an X300... The X300(which is part of the M200 chipset) is actually more like a GMA900/915G.
Its the 'shared memory' that's really holding this budget card down... If they added a dedicated 64 megs, and allowed you to allocate another 64 megs through shared memory, this chip wouldn't be so bad... And by that i mean, about on par with a ti4600... - Hoffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Went to the Apple Store at the Mall of America during lunch today. Picked up a white 2.0 GHz MacBook with a gig of ram. I had no problems with the glossy screen or keyboard. IMHO the new MacBooks look much nicer than the iBook they replace. Can't wait to get home from work and play!!! :)
- shadowmoses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MacBook's look very impressive, at first the in built GPU worried me but i'm far from a heavy gamer and rarely game on my Mac's only on consoles.....Anyhow i'll probably pick up a macBook in a month wait to see if there are any initial problems and see if Apple give the processor's a little bump like they have been doing with the MBP
- runner91786, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I agree with jeblis. Digging the comparison table is ***** lame. I am a die hard mac fan, but c'mon we have had about 5 or 6 relevant digg stories within the last 24 hours referring to MacBook. The comparison table?? NO DIGG!
- systimax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I just wanted to stop by and thank everyone who puts Digg or No Digg followed by one or more !!! in the comments
I really need that type of info, and belive me, others do care also.
Ftards! - owenstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How many people here are actually Professional Graphic Designers? Iv'e been in the design insustry for 10 years now- wondering how many other designers are happy or wanting the MacBook- since it's smaller and better for travel than the MBP... I have a G5 tower for most of my work, and just need a small mobile system that can work CS2 when needed. Hopefully the MacBook can handle it all?
- macamigo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want a mac book and I've been a designer for 8 years. My Quicksilver has had it (4 years old is ancient for a mac right?).
Does anyone know if the case is plastic or metal? - nhurden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if it would be more cost effective to have a macbook pro with comprimises in speed compared to having a macbook with a mac pro
- amp5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not sure if anyone still following this specific thread!!! I would like to know if 13-inch macbook and the integrated intel GMA 950 graphics would be compatible with all new flashy interface of OS X 10.5 leopard and also eventually Windows Vista Aero Glass via bootcamp?
- owenstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the Macbook case is definitely plastic- I checked them out at an Apple Store
