- lancert, on 10/12/2007, -7/+69For only $100 more, you can buy an XBox 360 (when it launches IPTV) and have the same functionality AND play kickbutt cool games as well...
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -13/+61neat, but $300 vs $20ish for a connector cable from my laptop? eh, no thanks.

Actually, knowing the UK, it'll be £299 for you guys. - Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29fastest front paged article ever.
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27"Apple TV" not "iTV"
- bouche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26never buy an apple product less than 5 months before macworld. I learned that last year when I got an iMac G5 in October...then they launched the Intel iMacs.
- douggmc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21pfft ... iTV ... hardly revolutionary. I'm disappointed with Apple in putting out something that other devices have done for 1+ years. Now ... if this device had a CableCard slot in it and a tuner ... it would be a serious home run.
* This from a so-called Apple "fan-boy". - rcran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I don't think anyone expected them to release ALL of the rumored products!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19i wonder if you can stream Divx movies
- hoos30, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I'm not that smart. Someone please explain to me how this Apple TV box is superior or even competitive with the media features you get from an Xbox 360 or a PS3?
- scots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16
This product is slick. But, ultimately all it does is make it easier for you to give more of your money to Apple by removing obstacles to purchasing TV & film content from ITMS.
(Cue the Don LaFontaine voice) "In a world where $15/month gets you Battlestar Galactica, Rome, 24, and all your other TV and movie favorites delivered to your door overnight from Netflix or Blockbuster, one man refuses to pay $300 to download DRM-ridden low resolution content."
This is like business school marketing class day 1; Create the shiniest Razor blade handle or neatest inkjet printer so you can gouge consumers on refills for the rest of their lives. - AllnightChemist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Wrong. The power of well-planned keynotes.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18iPhone is real, wow...
Touchscreen, too. - Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14it's usually down during keynotes and similar.
- bigjimslade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15
I doubt it. This is not a business device. The Treo is, and will continue to be, mostly a business device. You won't find many businesses that will plunk down $599 for an iPhone that's 95% consumer device and 5% business. - dice13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12As of right now you can run Windows Media Connect (small client on XP) and play content (music and video) on the 360. Media Center is not necessary.
- Sanitarium, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16And most spelling mistakes in a front page story ever.
- Insignis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11No Xvid/Divx support = zero chance of me even considering it. Too bad.
- andrewcod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Costs $299
Shipping in february - taking orders starting today - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I'd still take the 360 over this.
- h0m3styl3, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16I did not think that the iphone would look like that. Superbly awesome! Cannot wait!
$299 is a little much for the Apple TV though.. I'd rather just spend a bit more and get the xbox 360 that does the same things except at resolutions up to 1080i as well as play games.
One question, why do so many people use the apple music store?
Lossy quality DRM'd music just does not appeal to me at $.99 a track. Jobs said something like 59 tracks every second are bought off the store?
I guess I'm just old fashioned, but I like having the disks and cd artwork...as well as the ability to rip it to any computer I'll ever have rather than 5 computers in my entire life.
And for those that say this won't happen, it already has. I had a bunch of free tracks from pepsi caps a while back for the itunes music store and I can no longer listen to them on my computer.
Also, what if something better (or more accessible to me for my price range) than the ipod comes out? Oh yeah, my music is gone.
Iphone is awesome though :D - ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Why are you digging down bigjim? He's totally right. I'm a sysadmin for a fair sized company that happens to run 90% OSX, and I'm sure as heck not buying these for everybody. Until they have the same support for exchange that the Q does, i can't justify $500/employee, especially when I can get a Q for $200 and the iphone doesn't offer as much (email/contacts/calendar-wise).
on another note: I've had 3 users turn in broken phones *this week*. Theres no way we're buying touchscreen iphones for these boneheads. - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I'm bummed...this isn't a DVR of any sort. Crap. I was SO hoping that the iTV would incorporate DVR.
- neonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10720p, didn't Sony tell them, 1080p is the only true HD
/sarcasm - residentofevil, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10iHype
- zynaps, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13It's not, but digg is so apple-is-god aligned that it is scary
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15"Sounds like an over priced media center extender."
XBMC FTW! - iching, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10720 progressive HDTV. 40 GB HD confirmed. B, G & N! (That is to say, 802.11a/b/g/n.) How sweet to be right! Can stream from up to 5 machines and sync to 1 machine including your iTunes library. Both Mac and PC. Can "Autosync", i.e. take the 10 most recent unwatched vids and send them to the TV. UI is similar to an updated Front Row.
- lancert, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Which ITV are you referring to? MS's XBOX 360 IPTV WILL have DVR functionality, don't know about the Apple TV... As for the Media Center comment, MS Vista Premium includes it, it's no longer a separate version as with XP.
- Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Actually, to have the same functionality, you would have to have Windows Media Center as well (to stream multimedia from your PC). Other than that, good point (from what I see here, the 360 is a better use of one's entertainment dollar).
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I hope it plays content other than what's purchased from itunes. I won't buy anything with DRM in it. So i'd like to know what formats it supports and if the photo feature is tied into iphoto only. I personally hate iphoto. If it worked with picasa that would be great.
But without a DVR it's pretty much worthless to me. I want dual tuners and cable card support.
But then there are already a ton of devices that do this so this one is nothing special. Just seems like a device for those who have to deal with apple's DRM. - andrewmp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7*cliche*
but can it run linux? - stevenb486, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The engadget article is WAYY better

After all, we're now getting much better performance, especially for those of us with laptops, and Rosetta has made the transition almost painless. You can't ask for much more.
- kevincw01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5please digg down non-apple tv comments. there is a thread for the iphone.
- bouche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Useless to Canadians. There is no TV shows or movies in the iTunes store.
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4$299 for something that only streams formats that iTunes has is kind of crappy. Wish it did xvid divx

Sounds like an over priced media center extender. - Manhigh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I wonder if I can play Duke Nukem Forever on it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4jeez is that phone a beautiful piece of design.
- gazzerh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The success of this is dependent on the video formats it can play. I'm not touching it until I know it can play Xvid from files on my Mac.
- Kaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'll stick with my Xbox360. Thanks anyhow.
- TimothyStickles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm really surprised Apple released this product. After previewing it in the last Keynote they had an opportunity to read the reaction of the public / media. It was very clear across the board that people thought the product was too anemic and specialized to serve any real purpose. Why wouldn't Apple take that into consideration and build it up into something more useful? At the very least, a DVR.
It's a strange misstep for Apple and one that could have real consequences. This is their first real foray into the living room, and it's a dud before it even hits the gates. Better to write off the costs and not release a poor product than to release a poor product to try and make money and give yourself a bad name in return.
Also, and this is just my opinion, the name "Apple TV" looks cool when they replace the word "Apple" with their logo -- but it's a terrible brand name. If they were going to go with an existing brand, it should have been Mac TV.
In summary: Useless, underwhelming product + poor branding + high price = FAILURE - bishop1847, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How long until someone figures out how stream divx movies, instead of using whatever format iTunes uses for movies?
- i64X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Who cares what Apple wants, they should be interested in what the customer wants.
I'd much rather record a show in HD from the cable that I already pay for than pay them 99 cents to get a DRM'ed copy of the same show in less quality. - JamesBrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hear Hear!
Not to mention MKV container format files. Without support for more codecs/file types this thing is essentially worthless to many users. Sure you could transcode your video to M4V but that could take a very long time. - fifrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7He said meh! That is adding to the conversation. Haven't you seen the Simpsons?
- fahrenheitlf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Does purchasing this $299 set-top box lock you into using iTunes? No thanks if that is true. There are plenty of other options out there that do not lock you into one content provider.
