These products may be exciting, but could you fanboys quit gushing over it? - boffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1£250...lol very true we really do get ripped off over here.
According to Darrelc its only £199 but I don't know his source - h0m3styl3, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16I did not think that the iphone would look like that. Superbly awesome! Cannot wait!
$299 is a little much for the Apple TV though.. I'd rather just spend a bit more and get the xbox 360 that does the same things except at resolutions up to 1080i as well as play games.
One question, why do so many people use the apple music store?
Lossy quality DRM'd music just does not appeal to me at $.99 a track. Jobs said something like 59 tracks every second are bought off the store?
I guess I'm just old fashioned, but I like having the disks and cd artwork...as well as the ability to rip it to any computer I'll ever have rather than 5 computers in my entire life.
And for those that say this won't happen, it already has. I had a bunch of free tracks from pepsi caps a while back for the itunes music store and I can no longer listen to them on my computer.
Also, what if something better (or more accessible to me for my price range) than the ipod comes out? Oh yeah, my music is gone.
Iphone is awesome though :D - JerodSlay, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6Bury because inaccurate. It's called Apple TV. It's already on the apple store online. Power, ethernet, hdmi, component, analog audio out, optical digital audio out. 40GB Hard Drive.
HDTV required
Now you can watch 320x240 video on your 1080p television at your heart's content.
Lame - neonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10720p, didn't Sony tell them, 1080p is the only true HD
/sarcasm - KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3720p actually makes a great deal of sense now that I think about it. 1080p web video content seem a bit too much, but 720p sounds just like the limit of feasibility, so why not keep it at that.(being I'm guessing the main reason for the iTV was to sell HD content on iTunes at some point)
Actually, it almost makes me want to get a 720p native res TV to match! Still, a hard choice to make as the cost of 1080p plummets... - Mirag3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@kibibyte
I can see how most things you would want to stream would be in 720p, but why limit it to 720p? I just don't understand why it can't play 1080p - it seems to have all the hardware, especially with the 10/100 port
sorry guys /rant, im still looking for something to hook up my linux server in my basement to my 1080p tv upstairs.

- iching, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10720 progressive HDTV. 40 GB HD confirmed. B, G & N! (That is to say, 802.11a/b/g/n.) How sweet to be right! UI is similar to an updated Front Row.

XBMC FTW! - Mirag3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2seriously thought, wth, 1080i? with a correctly formatted h.264 over 10/100 Ethernet connection, 1080p should be no problem. Also, all the new Macbook Pros have gigabit ethernet ports, and yet the new airport extreme only supports 10/100? That's just stupid. There is no reason why they couldn't use gigabit ports.
P.S. Airport extreme includes "802.11n enabling drivers" - those should already be ON EVERY MAC. I should NOT have to buy an airport extreme just to enable the draft-n I already paid for!! - i64X, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1That's exactly what it is. I also noticed that output is limited to component and HDMI. If you want to use component, it looks like you're only getting stereo audio output since there's no optical or coax audio out on it for 5.1.
- joshuakuhn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@i64x: It has optical audio out as well as the audio that streams over HDMI... That's what the port on the far right is...

- Absinthminded64, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2I've been down on Apple since they ditched the PPC processors in favor of Intel. Now that I think about it buying a product that is a threat to Microsnot doesn't seem like such a bad idea.
- JamesShiell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why would you be down on Apple for ditching PPC? After all, we're now getting much better performance, especially for those of us with laptops, and Rosetta has made the transition almost painless. You can't ask for much more.
- Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Why would you be down on Apple for ditching PPC?"
Because he's the type of fan-boy that can't accept all the times he was told how much better PPC is he was being lied to. He needs to cling to that lie to justify his existence. - popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@JamesShiell:
You're absolutely right, switching to Intel was the smartest thing Apple has done in the past 20 years. They have been able to bump up performance on laptops and iMacs nearly every month because they're following Intel's roadmap. No longer are Apple users stuck with last year's processors on 2 year old bus speeds. - Absinthminded64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A machine running using a BSD derivative with a 64bit PPC processor was appealing. It was very different than mainstream and was appealing because it wasn't a WinTel box. I'm no fanboy but I do try to seek out that "Just got a new toy" experience that can be had when you're playing with a new architecture.
- simpranos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I could understand his dismay over the intel switch if it had occurred 6 or 7 years ago when the G4 reigned supreme, but honestly, I'll take any performance increase even if Apple announces that they have contracted with Satan to improve speed and power consumption at the low cost of Steve Jobs's soul.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Barlo
The G5 was a remarkable processor with great potential and high performance features that almost anyone who had any class about computer arch design would see as a better "computing" processor than x86/Intel, especially at the time(before woodcrest/conroe/memrom). The problem was really that POWER/PPC was designed for big bang for the buck and reliability(try making high performance embedded systems using x86 without spending half of your time powering/EMC'ing your cpu) and not power efficiency. Apple was selling more laptops than desktops, so this just wouldn't do. They also wanted to go into other low power devices, and knew Intel was moving to a low power multiple device class arch. Intel also had chip sets that were more home multimedia friendly than any Apple/PPC hardware makers could ever dream to come up with. So , they had to "skate to where the puck was going to be" and go Intel. Still, if i were running a supercluster of Macs, I'd definitely rather have new PPC based ones :p
- jiminoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5the webstore on apple.com is down for maintenance.... interesting timing. Could they be adding it right now??

- lancert, on 10/12/2007, -7/+69For only $100 more, you can buy an XBox 360 (when it launches IPTV) and have the same functionality AND play kickbutt cool games as well...
- Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Actually, to have the same functionality, you would have to have Windows Media Center as well (to stream multimedia from your PC). Other than that, good point (from what I see here, the 360 is a better use of one's entertainment dollar).
- junkmail02, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2but you can't stream divx
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I'm bummed...this isn't a DVR of any sort. Crap. I was SO hoping that the iTV would incorporate DVR.
- lancert, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Which ITV are you referring to? MS's XBOX 360 IPTV WILL have DVR functionality, don't know about the Apple TV... As for the Media Center comment, MS Vista Premium includes it, it's no longer a separate version as with XP.
- dice13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12As of right now you can run Windows Media Connect (small client on XP) and play content (music and video) on the 360. Media Center is not necessary.
- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Lol....you're saying buy a 360 because it's cheaper and then suggesting they purchase Vista Premium to stream to it? You do realize Premium alone is more than the cost of the Apple TV device? I'll bet you I could buy this right now and stream from any PC I already own. Streaming via Vista requires a purchase of the OS or buying a new computer preinstalled with it....either will both cost me more.
- JerodSlay, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7The Apple TV is no DVR. It has no video inputs of any sort. Apple said it best. It's "iTunes on your TV." Nothing more. To be honest, I could care less about 320x240 video on my HD TV, and as far as the music goes, I don't need a $299 box to make that happen. This is pretty dumb.
at msqvd: XP streams to 360 already. - artiomh86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What if the rumors about 360 v2 are true with 120gig hard drive? Would be a far better deal considering you getting a console as well. Also doesn't 360 has a choice of better resolution for films? (can't remember)
About the having vista to stream the content, but still its capable of working without any computer, for apple TV you need a full stop. - popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3@lancert:
"Which ITV are you referring to? MS's XBOX 360 IPTV WILL have DVR functionality, don't know about the Apple TV.."
Yay for a non-upgradeable 20G hard drive pretending to be a media center! - Butters66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You don't need media center at all. It's iTunes versus Xbox Live Marketplace. They have all kinds of movies and TV shows for download, like iTunes. The prices look to be the same, when you convert them from MS points. MS keeps adding all kinds of shows. For instance, you can watch the first four seasons and the current season of South Park on there. Which is something I, as Butters, care a great deal about.
They also have lots of HD shows and HD movies. It is pretty cool and very easy to use. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"To be honest, I could care less about 320x240 video on my HD TV,"
ITMS video has been 640x480 for some time now, which actually looks really good on a projected image - I thought the lower resolution was a little too small for Battlestar, but 640x480 looks better than my cable signal for Sci Fi. Given that the iTV supports 720p, I'm sure we can expect even higher resolutions for things like movies. For $10, I might well be willing to buy a 720p movie and have a nice compromise between the lower resolution DVD and a more expensive 1080p version on Blu-Ray. - cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Actually, to have the same functionality, you would have to have Windows Media Center as well (to stream multimedia from your PC)"
Just goes to show how dangerous it is to begin a reply with "Actually".
One can put one of many UPnP servers on your Windows box and the Xbox 360 will see it and stream from it quite well. One of which is basically just the newest version of Windows Media Player. TVersity is another free solution. No Media Center required.
Oddly enough I was looking at the many wireless and wired UPnP media connectors in the market place, and decided to get an XBox 360 for just about $100 more than the units I was sold on ($299 vs. $399 Xbox 360 w/ HDD). Best $100 I ever spent... Now given Apple's iTunes Apple TV should rock. This may come down to content in 2-3 years...

- bigjimslade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15
I doubt it. This is not a business device. The Treo is, and will continue to be, mostly a business device. You won't find many businesses that will plunk down $599 for an iPhone that's 95% consumer device and 5% business. - ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Why are you digging down bigjim? He's totally right. I'm a sysadmin for a fair sized company that happens to run 90% OSX, and I'm sure as heck not buying these for everybody. Until they have the same support for exchange that the Q does, i can't justify $500/employee, especially when I can get a Q for $200 and the iphone doesn't offer as much (email/contacts/calendar-wise).
on another note: I've had 3 users turn in broken phones *this week*. Theres no way we're buying touchscreen iphones for these boneheads.

This product is slick. But, ultimately all it does is make it easier for you to give more of your money to Apple by removing obstacles to purchasing TV & film content from ITMS.
(Cue the Don LaFontaine voice) "In a world where $15/month gets you Battlestar Galactica, Rome, 24, and all your other TV and movie favorites delivered to your door overnight from Netflix or Blockbuster, one man refuses to pay $300 to download DRM-ridden low resolution content."

It ties into iTunes the most robust and widely used content distribution system in the world. It comes with a real remote control. The look and feel of it will fit in much better with most people's home entertainment center, and it will appeal to people who would never dream of buying a video game console.
That answer your question? - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5It's the interface.
The 360 music player sucks.
iTunes on your TV and the Front Row interface is what will sell it.
Also, it has HDMI. :P - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I'd still take the 360 over this.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31) You can play music you bought on iTunes
2) You can buy content from the iTunes Store

>> 3) 802.11N = wireless HD streaming

- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2if you're currently holding any shares of RIM- sell, mortimer, sell!
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4i'd like to retract that statement after seeing the phone $$$ and contract. don't think they'll be stealing rim's lunch money anytime soon....
- douggmc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21pfft ... iTV ... hardly revolutionary. I'm disappointed with Apple in putting out something that other devices have done for 1+ years. Now ... if this device had a CableCard slot in it and a tuner ... it would be a serious home run.

- evolvedlight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not bad, seems like a competitor to the MHS a little
- fahrenheitlf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Does purchasing this $299 set-top box lock you into using iTunes? No thanks if that is true. There are plenty of other options out there that do not lock you into one content provider.
