- gaymathman, on 10/06/2009, -17/+64It's rather ironic two companies that solely rely on cheap labor and (very dirty)coal-fired power plants from China and ship their products half way around the world are attempting to be morally righteous here.
- pixeldust, on 10/06/2009, -6/+33"Mt St Helens eruption released more "greenhouse gasses" then everything expelled from the industrial age until right now."
Completely false. It took a few minutes on google to find it would take something like 7 Mt St Helens per day to equal what humans contribute every day, as well as the following:
"At Mount St Helens the maximum measured emission rate was 2.2X10^7 kg per day. The total amount of gas released during non-eruptive periods from the beginning of July to the end of October was 9.1X10^8 kg . I do not have an estimate for the volume of CO2 released during the Plinian eruptions. As a long-term average, volcanism produces about 5X10^11 kg of CO2 per year; that production, along with oceanic and terrestrial biomass cycling maintained a carbon dioxide reservoir in the atmosphere of about 2.2X10^15 kg. Current fossil fuel and land use practices now introduce about a (net) 17.6X10^12 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere and has resulted in a progressively increasing atmospheric reservoir of 2.69X10^15 kg of CO2. Hence, volcanism produces about 3% of the total CO2 with the other 97% coming from man-made sources. For more detail, see Morse and Mackenzie, 1990, Geochemistry of Sedimentary Carbonates.

So, no, we’re not worried about all the volcanic CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere. The earth system is in equilibrium with that amount of CO2 and can deal with it easily. But yes, we are worried about all of the extra CO2 being released by recent human activity at a rate much faster than current natural mechanisms can compensate."

- cyberskier, on 10/06/2009, -4/+10The bigger story is that perhaps this will finally reveal the Chamber of Commerce for what it is, at least on a national level. Policy after policy is aimed at giving big business special privileges, regardless of what is destroyed in its wake, which I guess shouldn't be a surprise. Look, for example, at their version of so-called "tort reform," much of which is just an attempt to shield members from responsibility, even for truly egregious actions.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_opinion_on ... - scottyah, on 10/06/2009, -4/+9thanks for that ad populum fallacy, because the volcanos do it, it must be ok... While i agree greenhouse gasses have been produced in the past by nature, and in greater quantities, humans are still contributing to the production unnecessarily. Also, volcanos don't fill the earth with trash. Last i heard, human beings can and have been studying the CO2 concentrations from the past
- Gusbob, on 10/06/2009, -5/+9Exactly. The Greenhouse Effect is a naturally occurring phenomenon that is beneficial to us in terms of weather and temperature stability. The Enhanced Greenhouse Effect is what we're worried about. This opposition to 're-branding' of global warming to climate change is exactly what is preventing 'objective science'. If scientists are unable to adjust their models with new knowledge or data, how are we ever going to advance past rudimentary models if they are all shot down in their infancy stages?

- the8thbit, on 10/06/2009, -5/+8"but for every study that says "global warming" (now re-branded as the more poll friendly climate change) is absolutely doing everything that scares little children at night, theres another study that says the exact opposite."
I have never seen a single article published in any reputable scientific journal which states that global climate change isn't a serious issue.
"There is no such thing as objective science nowadays, just as theres no such thing as objective news."
You're right, there isn't, and there has never been. Scientific research is biased towards research which goes against the trend of popular opinion, as this is the most interesting research, (most likely to get noticed and get funding, and just generally more fun) and this is the kind of research that, if it you end up having repeatable results which conflict with popular understanding, will make you more likely to win a Nobel prize.
This is beneficial, as it forces science to be self-critical. This also means that it is much, much more beneficial for a researcher or group of researchers to provide evidence against global climate change.
"Mt St Helens eruption released more "greenhouse gasses" then everything expelled from the industrial age until right now. Sorry but the most likely explanation is that human beings are trying to explain and comprehend epochs of time when they only have a reasoning of a few hundred years,"
As already pointed out, this is not true, but even if it were, why would this matter? Are you saying we shouldn't do anything about it because it's naturally occurring? It's no different from taking a medication to stop or suppress a naturally occurring disease. Are you opposed to medical research because it's just a response to something natural? - sivyr, on 10/06/2009, -3/+5As I understand it, after having the sweat shop fiasco brought into the limelight, Nike enacted a rather strict corporate policy against their use, and now has some of the best standards in terms of worker compensation and environmental impact in their market.
Honestly, I really don't know the truth of this, but I've heard, anyway. - xGORDOx, on 10/06/2009, -1/+3They are pro-business. You can't be pro-business and be for government health care.

The equation just doesn't add up. - inactive, on 10/06/2009, -1/+3@sivyr:
"Has there been any progress? Has anything changed?
Yes. For example, because of the pressure that was placed on Nike by consumers, women workers no longer have to prove they are menstruating to get their legally guaranteed leave. Also, workers are no longer beaten with machetes or threatened at gunpoint for union organizing activity.
However, while we have seen some progress, there is still no movement on the two most important issues -- Nike workers are still being paid a poverty wage and Nike still refuses to bargain with their workers in good faith."

Try reading your own source. The NSB was talking about thousands of years from now in one case and the cooling effects of aerosols overpowering the warming effects of carbon dioxide in the other. We've made good strides in cleaning up the aerosol pollution, as well as in our scientific understanding of this field.
Ranting about a self-appointed celebrity spokesman does not make the accumulated scientific knowledge disappear. - kamiller42, on 10/06/2009, -3/+5Let's try not to white wash history. The idea we may be in a global cooling was entertained by more than Time and Newsweek. The National Science Board and even Carl Sagan entertained the idea.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_cooling#Concer ...
Scientist disagree. Scientists agree. Scientists are right. Scientists are wrong. They are not on the same page about this no matter how many times Al Gore wants to repeat it. There is insufficient evidence, historical and otherwise, to prove there is human created global warming and even less evidence there is anything man can do about it to significantly change it. - vikingcoder, on 10/06/2009, -3/+4Ideological opinion columns pointing to daily & weekly newspaper articles do not make the published scientific research disappear.
There was no 1970s "global cooling scare" in the scientific literature. Time and Newsweek, and all popular weeklies & dailies, are not reliable sources of scientific knowledge.
http://ams.confex.com/ams/pdfpapers/131047.pdf A review of the literature suggests that, to the contrary, greenhouse warming even then dominated scientists’ thinking about the most important forces shaping Earth’s climate on human time scales. More importantly than showing the falsehood of the myth, this review shows the important way scientists of the time built the foundation on which the cohesive enterprise of modern climate science now rests.

The survey identified only seven articles indicating cooling compared to 42 indicating warming. - vikingcoder, on 10/06/2009, -3/+4Both terms, "climate change" and "global warming", are accurate. It is called "global warming" because the averaged temperature is rising. It is called "climate change" because the increased energy (i.e. temperature) won't affect all locales equally. "Climate change" isn't a new term; it's the IPCC, not IPGW & the first assessment report was released in 1990. It has been called "climate change" since 1975. http://books.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=12181 http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/189 ...
"Climate change" became the terminology of choice under the Bush administration after the Republican consultant Frank Luntz determined that people were less likely to be stirred to action with the terminology "climate change" as opposed to "global warming." http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2003/mar/04/ ... http://mises.org/Community/blogs/tokyotom/archive/ ... - inactive, on 10/06/2009, -5/+6Simply put, the late 20th century warming is not unusual nor "unprecedented."
This is huge news that has gigantic implications, both economic and political. Since this past global warming was not extraordinary, it can no longer be extrapolated by global warming alarmists as producing catastrophic climate change causing the polar ice sheets to melt, thus causing incredible sea rises with associated "drowning" of coastal areas. All the catastrophic calamities that Al Gore, President Obama, the EU and the United Nations have claimed are based on false conclusions from bogus tree ring research. It would now be fair and accurate to conclude that the trillions of dollars that politicians want to spend on the reduction of CO2 emissions and the imposition of a drastically lower energy lifestyle on the world's citizens is totally without merit.
