- Rapter09, on 07/02/2009, -11/+63"...enough to reveal the presence of a temperature warning screen"
No. That warning has always been there. Don't act like they added it to the software in a secret stealth update to appease your poor fanboy hearts. They did add the kbase article on the 25th, though. Probably so when people rush to the Apple site and search "iPhone hot" they get the article telling them to not be morons.
People are using their iPhones all day in their hands, connected to AC in these big beefy cases, in their cars connected to car adapters and they're getting hot and they're panicking because they don't understand and - like The Mob always does - it runs to the Apple Discussion forums and it screams as loud as it can that there's a defect and they need to be recalled. Knee-jerk reaction.
The physical shell of the iPhone is supposed to act as a heatsink: so guess what happens when you're using your phone all day, plugged into an adapter, hot california sun beaming down through the windshield onto the phone, in a big black rubber case? Hmm take a freaking guess.
It's not to say that there aren't very likely safety issues present here, and that there isn't a concern. But come on now. For the *large majority* of people this isn't a "Heat advisory" this is Apple saying: "God damn you people are stupid. This is why its probably happening." - mizarone, on 07/02/2009, -0/+34Inability to detect sarcasm? There's an app for that.
- spookyttws, on 07/02/2009, -4/+37That's why my inferior 2G iPhone that cost me $500 dollars finally has a feature that the 3G(S) doesn't: It won't burn your face.
- quomen, on 07/02/2009, -3/+29Were you born with the inability to detect sarcasm?
- tkcom, on 07/02/2009, -2/+183GS: S for Sizzling
- ghatid, on 07/02/2009, -1/+14Well, the iphone is basically as powerful as a weak laptop now..but it's one without active cooling or vents. It's also mainly a large battery inside. Of course it'll get hot.
- Zippo, on 07/02/2009, -0/+12Having to deal with 2G speeds would be enough to burn my face with frustration.
- Gr1nch, on 07/02/2009, -1/+13Same discoloration happened with the first white macbooks. They chalked it up to cheap chinese plastic. It was nasty. I don't know why you're getting dugg down, its a real issue.
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -4/+15In other news, computers get hot when they are in 100F weather leaving scientists puzzled about this recent phenomenon.
- BurtCokain, on 07/02/2009, -1/+10That article is inaccurate - watch out. You shouldn't charge a Lithium Ion battery below 0 celsius (32 Fahrenheit) - charging a frozen Li-Ion battery can cause a nasty/lol-tastic explosion.
http://batteryuniversity.com/partone-5B.htm
The apple article has the correct temperatures. The iPhone won't allow charging below 0C, not 0F. I'd imagine your thumb would freeze to it at 0F, too :D - macsrock888, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9iMelter - see how hot YOU can get your iPhone!
- uberduger, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8I charge mine at 0K.
- Azsen, on 07/02/2009, -1/+9I've seen the app in action, it sends you a text message telling you to put your phone in the nearest refrigerator.
- TrancePhreak, on 07/02/2009, -0/+7Some people are reporting that it affects the 3G as well as 3GS.. The original is clocked lower and might not have the problem.
- BobakN, on 07/02/2009, -2/+9So...who is acting as though they added it to the software in a secret stealth update?
All that was written in the description, in the portion you quoted no less, was that Apple has only chosen now "to reveal the presence of a temperature warning screen..."
You can only reveal the existence of something that already exists which is, as you have explained, exactly what's happening here. - omarqaz7, on 07/02/2009, -0/+7Temperature inside the phone != Temperature outside the phone
- uberduger, on 07/02/2009, -1/+8Dugg for the sad realisation that there's inevitably going to be someone pathetic enough to pay for something like that.
- Zergvasion, on 07/02/2009, -4/+11I don't even care what you said, I'm burying you for putting your username at the end of the post.
- turpenine, on 07/02/2009, -3/+10i've had plenty of smart phones that get super hot. I had a really old htc one 4 years ago that would get uncomfortable to hold!
wow! - mrBitch, on 07/02/2009, -1/+8@ petersonca, RE: ".. funny..people use other phones all day....connected to AC. And they dont get hot. I guess Apple just doesn't have smart engineers."
You only needed to read down to the comments section of that article to see that you're just being an idiot.
FTA comments :
" .. What's amazing is that the iPhone is smart enough to know when it's overheating. What other phone does that?? My Nokia dumbphone just shuts off without warning. Gettin' myself a 3GS this month." - EVILTHETURTLE, on 07/02/2009, -2/+8Why the ***** do people still sign posts.
- Nothlit, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5Your phone does not overheat. That proves nothing about other people's phones.
- Mike17102, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5My Tilt is smart enough to stop charging the battery from the AC adapter if it starts to get to hot. Its annoying in that I cant watch slingbox all day, but it beats having it turn off or just melt.
- acceleration, on 07/02/2009, -2/+7It seemed to me that Dylson was making a pun on the word "fan"
- ThirdPrize, on 07/02/2009, -1/+6Overclocking a phone and adding a couple of micro case fans, here we come.
- ohreilly, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5Presumably it will be an app that displays an animated spinning fan.
I remember one existing for Palm OS (back in the day), except it was free. - aristotle0dude, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4Probably because it does not have a GPS. The issue seems to arise with people who are using the GPS a lot in a hot car.
- Dylson, on 07/02/2009, -5/+9How do you cool something that has no fans?
- StEligius, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5LOL, i just saw a Copy/Paste TV commercial for the new iPhone, how freaking lame. Advertising that your now just adding it to your 3rd revision as a launch feature, what ineptitude.
- datdamonfoo, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4OH NOES! My phone is too hot so I can't check out the amazing new Copy/Paste feature!
- comradeTJH, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3So the iPhone got a thermal sensor inside? Would be nice if there was an API to read out temperature for an App.
- kooredaan, on 07/02/2009, -8/+11I don't believe this. Stuff like this never happens to Apple products. They are perfect....
/s - pyrates, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3So why doesn't this effect the iphone 2g? Doesn't that have the same cpu as the iPhone 3g? Perhaps its aluminum body helps keep it cool when the cpu temp rises.
- JonTheGoose, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Don't be a pussy. This guy looks legit.
- BluSkreenOfDeth, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Actually, I could see something like this on Survivor Man.
"In order for me to get fresh water in these sub-arctic conditions, I'm going to use my iPhone to boil the water inside my seal skin bag." - dotorg, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3No, but it could burn your nuts.
I had my battery damn near explode in my 2G... burned my leg, and expanded enough to push the seams apart along the aluminum backing.
Hot phone that will cool down > phone battery exploding in your pocket. - EVILTHETURTLE, on 07/02/2009, -2/+5You were dugg down because you are a ***** moron.
- tattokris, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3I tried but it when I took it out of my supertastic freezer there was nothing but molecules.
- ohreilly, on 07/02/2009, -2/+5No, we still have lots of other reasons, like the freedom to install apps from any source, can sign our own apps, buy cheaper handsets, unlock said handsets (if not already unlocked), use any network we want, no stupid cult of Apple, fast HSDPA that works, other features that we've had for years and Apple will claim it's an "innovation" when they implement it in 10 years time, etc the list goes on.
"(which by the way puts all other cell phone copy and paste features to shame.....look it up)"
Is that because it has some swish animation to show the letters being moved across apps or something? I know that's what you Apple types like.
Nokia ftw. - StEligius, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2US military spec electronics kick ass!
- uberduger, on 07/02/2009, -1/+3I bury all fanboyism, regardless of who it is for/against. In time, it will help stop all these retarded arguments.
- StEligius, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2/s Does that mean you have the sniffles? Here is my G4 Cube tissue dispenser take a few. Oh! That was sarcasm, how ironic! ; )
- ilgaz, on 07/02/2009, -1/+3Nokia`s development tools make impossible for idiots to code on them. Also power usage is one of the most important parts of certification process (which you need if you will add your stuff to startup etc). Certifying bodies (not just Nokia!) do real tests like these, not like "oh will it steal our iTunes music store customers?" kind of tests.
- GeorgeStone2, on 07/02/2009, -1/+3Have an iPhone, Dugg for nokia.
Nokia and Apple need to team up. Nokias are bulletproof. - PacoLugi, on 07/02/2009, -2/+4The iPhone is great, because I bought it, and I'm great.
- krisrm, on 07/02/2009, -2/+4People might bury you (and me, too), but it's the truth. Apple's locked it's users in a box with the iPhone, and even after paying a premium for the device, you don't "own" it enough to do simple things like running 3rd party apps in the background, or use all the hardware features of your phone (there's a camera on the 3G and on the 2G, someone got an explanation for the lack of video capabilities?). I can't wait until the HTC Hero is released in North America; maybe a tweaked and tuned Android will show off the true capabilities of modern smartphone hardware.
- etx313, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Ugh, I've seen this screen on my friends iphone after he left it in the car in the sun. And he has firmware 2.x. Nothing new here.
- hollismb, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2My wife's 3G overheated and displayed this message when she left it in a vinyl beach bag on the deck at a pool a few weeks ago. The bag retained heat and got the phone so hot, that it could almost burn your hand when you felt it. After cooling back down, phone still works fine.
- morningmatters, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Well, you can tell that the phone was designed by people who don't live in very warm places. The advice is not to use the phone when the temp is over 95 degrees. That would be the lowest temp for places like Arizona and Texas during the summer.
I don't regret purchasing the 3Gs since I live in the Northeast, but if I lived in the Southern states I would be returning the phone right now. -
