There's also still no TV Show or Movie content available outside the United States so even the original device is a pointless purchase.- johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18i listened to a Mac podcast (MacBreak Weekly) and most of the people had been using the AppleTV. from what they said, the big reason seems to be that some people have a laptop as their main/only computer. this way you don't have to leave the machine on to watch content. another reason, some were using older 802.11 protocols on the content hosting machine, so they had buffering issues with some stuff.
- OneManArmy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+22"Why would you buy a self proclaimed video streaming device with this much local storage?"
May be because I don't want to keep the source of the stream turned on while watching the video on the AppleTV? - hove, on 10/11/2007, -15/+4How annoying
"What a waste of money. Why would you buy a self proclaimed video streaming device with this much local storage?"
so i can watch tv without my laptop on, mornon.
"There's also still no TV Show or Movie content available outside the United States so even the original device is a pointless purchase."
very good point i couldn't agree more.
digg or bury? - acex23, on 10/11/2007, -16/+9i hate mornons.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27Perhaps, just perhaps, the future existence of a 160GB Apple TV also implies the future existence of something that would need that kind of space. Like, say, HD video?
- e808, on 10/11/2007, -22/+15Regardless of hard drive size, this device is garbage and belongs in the $99 clearance bin at Walmart.
- Wivell, on 10/11/2007, -7/+5There's a 99 dollar clearance bin at Wal-Mart? Where the hell is that store? Mulholland Drive?
- virtualball, on 10/11/2007, -13/+12I'm sorry, but I hate people. I hate it when people said "The AppleTV sucks because there's not enough storage and all you can do is stream iTunes movies!" Well, now you have 160 GB HDD, the ablility to watch YouTube, standard aTV abillities, and all those crazy cool hacks, and you still say "It's a waste of money!" If people need it, it is a great deal! Just because you don't need it doesn't make it useless.
In other words, these same people are saying "Whoah, look at the Surface!" but still saying "The iPhone's touchscreen is useless!" *roll eyes* - sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -11/+6Wake me up when it supports divx natively, Virtualball. I don't need Steve jobs telling me what I can and cannot stream.
- almalax19, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5@sockpuppets
Yea that would go over really good with the TV and Movie companies that are trying to actually sell stuff to stream to the device. I really doubt they would want to open this thing wide open for pirates. When your sitting down in mommies basement surfing torrent sites you dont have to worry about much but when your a multi-billion dollar company you have to worry about a little thing called lawsuits and business partnerships.
If people want to hack it then amen to them but to expect Apple to do it is insane from a legal standpoint. - kethraal, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1"Perhaps, just perhaps, the future existence of a 160GB Apple TV also implies the future existence of something that would need that kind of space"
Yep. That, combined with the recent addition of YouTube makes many AppleTV theories a _LOT_ more plausible:
Like this one:

(Note: the above is kind of self promotion -- they quoted me in that article... but the blog's not mine.) - miniboss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6$399 for a 160GB AppleTV? Well that explains why they don't allow that USB port to be used for external storage.
- gxcdesign, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Now that I only use notebook computers, I will proably opt for the 160 GB for my home theater, seeing how I hate plugging in my laptop to the stereo just to listen to music.
Seems like a formidable purchase - Hazardc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9original xbox + 500GB hard drive> apple tv
and cheaper
every video game from all early systems, huge movie/tv show collection, entire music collection, HD, and much more
all in a cheap box. if someone would release a consumer device that could do all of this out of the box, i might be on it.
when my over half a decade old xbox is this much better than this new shiny apple tv, no thanks - soogy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4@hazardc
The original Xbox can't play HD movies unless you upgrade the RAM and CPU (which can be costly: over $100). Even then, it will only play some 720p (depending on the codec) at a decent framerate, forget about 1080i/p.
You're better off building a PC for this, which you can EASILY do for $399; most rendering is offloaded to the GPU, so any DX9 card will do. Basically, CPU $60 + mATX mobo $50 + RAM $60 (2GB DDR2-667) + 320GB HDD $70 + SFF case with PSU $70 + misc $30 + low-end GPU $60. There's your $400, and it'll do more than just play movies. - Blizaine, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2@hazardc
People who say XBMC is > than AppleTV have obviously never used an AppleTV.
I have both and I can tell you that ApppleTV is WAY > than XBMC - soogy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@blizaine
Really? XBMC has an "Apple TV" skin. http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24617
XBMC can fetch IMDB info, posters, cast, description and tags -- and allow you to group, search and sort your films through that criteria. It can be extended through perl scripts (like the wonderful Apple Movie Trailers script, which allows you to download/stream trailers from the apple.com/trailers site). In short, if XBMC were a regular operating system for x86 PCs, I'd have it installed on my HTPC right now. The ONLY thing that bugs me about it is the inability to play HD videos, but that's a hardware limitation, not of XBMC.
Software-wise, there is no media player better than XBMC. Period. And it looks pretty, too.
- the_snitch, on 10/11/2007, -7/+16ever since they announced the apple tv (then iTv), I thought that YouTube would be a Killer App. Awesome that it's finally happening
- jimbojim, on 10/11/2007, -7/+76Youtube video quality is horrible when it takes up about 3" of my screen. I'd hate to see it taking up my 61" HDTV.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -14/+22What makes you think it's in regular YouTube quality?
If it were in regular YouTube quality, wouldn't there be content available day 1, instead of "thousands of the most popular vids being made available each week"? - superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -10/+5Why is happyscrappy being dugg down, when he makes an excellent prediction about what may come from YouTube on an AppleTV. Doesn't it make a lot of sense for YouTube to start offering higher quality video through some outlets, like say Apple TV or the 360?
It would be a different advertising model (or probably more like what we are used to with TV) but YouTube has to be sitting on a lot of much higher quality video than you can make out from the site. - tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6YouTube is only 'YouTube quality' because of their current distribution model, i.e. streaming in a browser with Flash. There's no reason at all why they couldn't develop a new distribution model too, like providing high-quality streaming and/or downloads with specific partners.
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5"Doesn't it make a lot of sense for YouTube to start offering higher quality video through some outlets,"
Sure it makes sense, but YouTube doesn't *have* any higher quality content, it's all FLV-encoded video, so in order to support new devices it'd have to basically rebuild itself. This was always one of the good things about Google Video over YouTube. - domr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10@geminitojanus:
People don't *upload* their original content to YouTube in FLV format. They upload in whatever format and resolution they have and YouTube process that into lowres FLVs. But you can be 100% sure that they keep the original format and could re-encode them at higher resolutions if that's how they were uploaded. - th3wiz4rd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Yeah, I know, the youtube script on my modded xbox (that I've had for about 2 years) is awesome.

They are. YouTube is converting uploaded videos to H.264 so Apple TV can tap into it:

- Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Well considering the other one wasn't big enough for the content people currently have on their computers, I wouldn't necessarily think it means iTunesHD is soon to come.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13160GB of storage is a pretty damn big hint, as far as I am concerned.
- Shaduu, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3With this new 160GB capacity I'll be on the order list tomorrow; I've been waiting for this kind of AppleTV ever since Jobs announced iTV. Although it may be a streaming device, would you really want to stream a large percentage of your media when, instead, you can directly access all your music, video and pictures from the box itself. I know what I'd go for.

- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18How come I can stream to my Xbox 360, PS3 from a DLNA (UPnP TV) server but I can't stream to an Apple TV?
Apple, how about opening this thing up to be useful for more than a channel to buy content from the iTunes Music Store?- booozeninja, on 10/11/2007, -8/+7How dare you. Apple owes you nothing.
If you want tinkerability buy something from Microsoft or IBM or some boring company. - mindbender9, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6"Apple, how about opening this thing up to be useful for more than a channel to buy content from the iTunes Music Store?"
This is exactly what I'm confused about with this device. If the only source of content is the iTunes store (from what I'm guessing), what is the appeal of the AppleTV to people who have their own video sources (dvd's, video files, a video streaming server, etc.)?
It seems like it's just another revenue generator for Apple if it's locked *only* to the iTunes store. I'm glad they didn't take this approach with the iPod by making it only play AAC files from Apple.
Can someone explain the novelty of this item to me? It seems so limited for such a price (and small HDD). Thanks. - colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"How come I can stream to my Xbox 360, PS3 from a DLNA (UPnP TV) server but I can't stream to an Apple TV?"
Can't you stream to the Apple TV? On the Apple TV, browse for your computer, and then select the media you want to stream to your TV. Edit: oh, you have a custom server. I should learn to read better. Bury away. - ronmexico, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Mindbender, you can put any music or videos you want into your iTunes library and play it over Apple TV. It doesn't have to come from the iTunes store.
- Maasneotek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@Mindbender the concept is called a "walled garden" whereby a company offers a portal to only certain providers guaranteeing revenue to specific sponsors.
My guess is we will see more functionality in this product as time goes on. The itunes movies and music support is just a foothold. I can imagine AppleTV will eventually support DLNA and allow easier tinkering, but for now, I think they are prioritizing secure high end content before they move on to 'opening it up' for the rest of us.
For the record a 120gb 2.5' HD is about a hundred so at least they aren't OVER charging for the extra hardware. I DO think they made a huge mistake not including such a large HD to begin with. I guess they underestimated how many people would be willing to stream proprietary media from another PC.
- booozeninja, on 10/11/2007, -8/+7How dare you. Apple owes you nothing.
- gafasiesornivek, on 10/11/2007, -14/+6Wow this has been an awesome day for Apple! I bet they had to hook up cables and everything to put a bigger hard drive in there. Go Apple go! Keep on innovating.
- stepnw1f, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I don't get it.... why do you bother? lol!
- siggyfawn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Newbie question.
Can I stream most popular formats to the apple tv? I download a lot of tv shows, and I'd love to be able to watch them on apply TV instead of using my laptop with an s-video cable.
Thanks.
(and why does HD space matter for applytv, I thought it streamed the content from the network?)- lolgamoff, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Sadly, I don't think so. Not out of the box, at least. you could always convert the TV shows to mpeg4, but that is time and resource consuming.
- SwornPacifist, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3@siggyfawn
From what I understand, it doesn't yet support all the common formats out of the box, you have to hack it to support DIVX, XVID, etc
An XMBC Xbox works great for this, but requires a lot of technical know-how to get up and running, since it requires a modded Xbox to start with. Once it's set up and running, along with µTorrent grabbing TV shows off RSS feeds automatically, it's like free Tivo without ads! :-) - siggyfawn, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2That's what I was wondering. Why not buy an Xbox elite?
iPods grew on pirated music. I don't understand why they'd be worried about people downloading movies/TV shows with Apple Tv. Those who can't, buy it off iTunes. But those who can, won't buy an Apply TV because of that.
Xbox elite, running utorrent, rss, automatically downloads, pretty much blows Apple TV away, and it's a next gen console.
AppleTV should just run VLC and come with uTorrent. I would have purchased one right away.
Like I said, I'd love to buy it if supported most file types. That seems like a fairly core issue of a "media player". - dumpydooby, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1It says on Apple's site that it supports MPEG4. Codecs aren't exactly my forte, but as far as I know, that's not an actual codec, but rather, it's a standard under which other codecs can be categorized. So DivX is an MPEG4 codec, but a decoder is required to actually extract the data, right? Where does that leave us with compatibility? This will support some sort of MPEG4 standard, but not certain MPEG4 codecs?
As far as I know, DIVX hasn't made any money off of this deal, so it's safe to assume that DivX and XviD will not work on AppleTV without some sort of hack.
Sorry if that was just nonsensical rambling, but I'm curious to know where it stands, and how likely it would be to watch DivX movies on it (even if via a hack).
- easy4lif, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I upgraded mine to 100GB for less then 50 bucks I don't think I'll need more drive space then that since I tend to manage my media between my primary computer and my Apple TV pretty well. But selling a 160GB version will definately help sell more & bring the Apple TV into the main stream.
- booozeninja, on 10/11/2007, -21/+6Apple TV going down the pan and what does Jobs do? Puts in a bigger hard drive. PFFTT!
Absolutely useless without XVid and Windows media support.
***** Apple and its fanboys.- ronmexico, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Thank you for your insightful comments.
- aapala, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12I am so ***** sick of companies charging out the ass for hard drive space. Although this is not quite as bad as what MicroSoft did with the 360, it is still ridiculous to charge a hundred ***** bucks for (an additional) 120GB.
- booozeninja, on 10/11/2007, -15/+6Hell yes bro!!! But the clueless ***** who the crippled XVid-less Apple TV is aimed
at have no idea they are being ripped off so it's all good. No problems.
Man when Jobs and his reality distorion field leave Apple that company is F.U.C.K.E.D!!! - ronmexico, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7What does F.U.C.K.E.D. stand for?
- almalax19, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1WOW their making an extra 40 bucks profit for the higher capacity model. As far as I know thats the reason for being in business...
- easy4lif, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1then do what every other person did the day the got their apple tv's, go out and buy a bigger drive yourself.
- 35263526, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3No, it's not. Not when the drive in question is a 2.5" notebook drive (which is what is used in both the Xbox 360 and the aTV).
Seriously, go check the OEM prices for those; they're considerably more expensive than 3.5" desktop drives. It _is_ around $100 for a 160 GB model.
- booozeninja, on 10/11/2007, -15/+6Hell yes bro!!! But the clueless ***** who the crippled XVid-less Apple TV is aimed
- mojojojo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3There are a lot of things not right with this announcement. I would have like to seen the entry level drop. 199 is a much easier pricepoint to swallow. Almost an impulse buy for what it does. This breaks traditional apple style pricing logic (where the larger model replaces the current, cutting some margin off the lower end).
Either way, it's a new product and will see much improvement. Until surround sound, no thanks. - gamemaster357, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9what a great way to screw the guys who got the 40 GB version for $299
- booozeninja, on 10/11/2007, -13/+4Welcome to the world of Apple dickface. Now stop crying and go back out and buy the $399 model.
- siggyfawn, on 10/11/2007, -10/+6The idea was, you stream content, HD space doesn't matter.
But now it does? Apple has no clue what they're doing. - johnbellone, on 10/11/2007, -7/+5Glad I didn't buy it.
- kharikri, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1Youtube on ApplTV, Cool! It Rocks.
YouTube was on Wii/PS3 five months ago. Check out moowee.tv which brings Youtube on TV through the Wii. - Wander2000, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3First thing I did to my AppleTV was upgrade the HD to 160 gigs. Second thing I did was go to www.awkwardtv.org!
- mepawl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'd like Apple to offer TV Shows and Movies in the iTMS outside the US to a reasonable price, so Apple TV was a little more useful than it is now! I mean in the US iTMS a TV show costs 1.99 Dollars, a MUSIC VIDEO costs 2.49 Euros in the European Stores. That's ~3.35 Dollars for a three Minute long Video...
*sigh*- mrblack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2£1.99 baby. Thats about $4. Alas who buys music videos? Considering there are loads of channels with those music adverts on.
- mepawl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Exactly...I'd just like to buy "The Office" Episodes...or Movies...
But...wow...1.99 Pounds is crazy! - Maasneotek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1The only reason I can imagine they did this is some awkward record company logic. You are buying The SONG IN the music video PLUS video content- hence the higher price tag.. Then again I have no idea why I'm trying to attribute any type of logic or cause and effect to the Record industry.
- mepawl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I WOULD buy Music Videos, for that price, if I'm getting a MP3 Version Free, because Fact is I can't burn a Vide to an Audio CD.
- penguinsix, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2I think this is yet another sign that the Mini is on its way out. Rumors are already saying as much...
- mrblack, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I hope for the love of god they wont sell it in the UK for £300+ (considering the standard is £199). That would be nuts.

You ***** me.
Shame on you.- Maasneotek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I'm assuming you bought the 40gb version? That sucks, is it still under warranty? Maybe you can call them and ask for an upgrade/ swap for the difference? It's worth a try.
- desqjockey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Anyone know of a way to stream video in 802.11n so as to have your HDTV as a wireless additional monitor? (or mirror of your original). Some kind of nifty box?
- PerfectTommy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I bet you if I call Apple tomorrow and complain (which I'll do for sure), they'll send me a new 160 gb version if I send back my old 40gb... If that doesn't work, I'll head to the Apple store around the corner. Just try it, worked with the iPod why not with the AppleTV
- applemumba, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Apple TV now with YouTube. (160GB, thats gonna be like £300 What?!?)

- gafasiesornivek, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Can the Apple stories please just ***** off and die already. We all realize that your little pony show with Steve Jobs today was underwhelming to say the least. You don't have to fill the front page with your garbage to compensate for how much Apple is going down the crapper.
- seneyr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Shouldn't this have been in the release from the start? I love the concept of Apple TV, but a bigger hard drive was the primary complaint everyone had. Getting YouTube integrated in was a no-brainer. Does it include Google Video too?
- matu4251, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2a lot of comments are about streaming... my understanding of iTV is that you synchronize your iTV with your iTune library.
Basically you are making a local copy on the iTV (thus the space)... it's wireless but not what I would call streaming.
I'd rather get a mac mini and use it as an iTV. - BLKMGK, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Sweet! Looks like maybe XBMC has a platform to shoot for with their Linux port then huh? :-) Now, how about some 1080 action!
- kevinshea, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Ok so I just called Apple, and they said "return your AppleTV if its within its 30 days, and get a store credit" otherwise if I wait until its out of the 30 day warranty period I'm SOL if I want to pull the switch-a-roo.
Looks like I'm short 1 AppleTV until they release this new one OR I suck it up and just buy another tv and run 2 ATV units.
Choices, choices. - MonkeyBoy87, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I just got cored by apple for buying one early. I got mine the day it shipped.
well I just hope the upgrade unit solves the heating disspation problem rev 1.0 has - biggrz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Even after reading all I have about this device, I still can't figure out for the life of me why anyone would choose this over the million alternatives out there. - valenca, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Wow, the early adopters really got screwed over this one, way to go Apple!
- jinu123nyc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It's still a Linksys Media Extender with a 160 gig harddrive. But it's Apple so everyone will buy it.

http://www.weaknees.com/appletv/apple-tv-upgrade.php - easy4lif, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1at this point, I'd want 3 things for an update to the apple TV
1.) direct buying from the device itself.
2.) access to the USB port so you can plug in a external drive (500GB +)
3.) HD Content.- buckykatt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I'd want one more: video rentals, or maybe a partnership with Netflix that allows you to use their "Watch Now" feature on AppleTV.
Don't know how that would affect their movie sales though.

- MikeOSX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Now how about an upgrade option for those of us that already own an appleTV?
- 3vno, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I love my appletv, its great. I stream all my media with draft n. I wonder if the appletv can stream hd movies efficiently? Maybe that why there releasing one with a 160 gig the harddrive? If so, im pissed.
- chuckpenzone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1they better be ramping up for HD - this thing looks like video from a Sega Genesis
- skellener, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Low-res TV shows, movies and now heavily compressed, horrible looking, non-widescreen YouTube videos. WHAT THE HELL IS APPLE DOING??? Steve Jobs has said they want the AppleTV to be the DVD player of the 21st century. None of the content is even HD quality!!! What's the use of having a nice big widescreen TV to watch crappy internet videos?? WHERE IS THE HD CONTENT FROM ITUNES???? I'm a big Mac supporter, but I just don't get what they are doing with AppleTV.
- MikeOSX, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Uh yeah, they are using h.264 for the youtube videos that are on the appleTV. RTFA.
- Neddiw, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0The Mac Mini is Oficially defunct...
R.I.P. Mini - unionjacker, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1What's the big deal about ITUNES anyhow? You can get all the content you want for free off trackers. Video. Music. And buy this for $170 from Ebay:
Tvisto USB 2.0+FW PORTABLE Media Divx player+300GB HDD
At least it plays all your Divx content out the box as well as DVD-R iso images, and now you can get HD content from trackers already and this too will play it on your TV up to 1080
Still those Modded Xboxes I see people advocating here seem to do all this and more. I wonder why Microsoft doesn't mod their boxes themselves and sell the Xbox units as an all in one with a hybrid Blu-ray and HD dvd player to boot. Why are these companies are so far behind? How long did it take APPLE to release the IPOD for MP3 when Mp3 was already the rage since 1998. They should do the same with Divx. Stop holding out. They can't stop Divx. It's just superior quality to Itunes content.
Torrents are a better distribution system and has been for years. If they just switched to using Divx and were able to get the content to us as effectively as the pirates I'd think we would then pay for that kind of service. All of you are still waiting for HD content when this has been available on torrent sites for a while now, including full Blu-Ray and HD dvds ready to download. But of course we know this already. Any one smart enough would just find a way to download this without worrying about getting notes in the mail or lawsuits. There are plenty of ways to do this and keep yourself anonymous even if you do have a big business and are worried about lawsuits. Torrents are just better that this ITUNES. Period. You just need to learn how to use it. - 3vno, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1at neddl3:
