- stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Leo screwed up. He failed to uncheck a preference. Feedburner did nothing whatsoever wrong...Leo admitted that later.
Nice mischaracterization of the situation though. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you use feedburner to re-direct you feed, it gives you all the stats you need. i know exactly what % of my subscribers use iTunes, and if they use it on Mac or PC.
I doubt that a huge amount of podcasters actually need to be able to see the amount of subscriber on iTunes. - MacTechSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well regardless of how we get our stats if Apple is showing one person their number of subscribers then every podcaster should be allowed to see that info.
- ddonahue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't believer nobody is ranting about Leo Laport's experience with feedburner. He has a rant, later semi-retracted about the privacy of subscriber stats and why he shut them down and terminated his relationship with them.
Leos blog site is http://thisweekintech.com and its a few weeks back.
Leo is very polite and after talking with them, said they did nothing wrong and it was all a misunderstanding, but he STILL discontinued his relationship for the TWiT podcast. To me that reads Leo's a nice guy, feedburner apologized but that Leo wouldn't have anything further to do with them. Leo actions speak larger then his words.
I think the larger and more complete solution would be for the next generation of podcast formatting (or a standard for RSS descriptions of them) to include a method for standardized download / play tracking. Such a method would have to something like a XML post/get to a listed URL and would have to ignore HTML responses to prevent browser hacking / spam abuses. Then all you'd have to is track pagecounts on the tracking URL using whatever webserver you listed in your podcast header/rss description. Licenses to redistribute podcasts could include a "you must attribute it me and list my tracking URL in the header" phrase. - ThisIsMyName, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is probably to prevent those with fewer subscribers from giving up and moving on, thus decreasing the number of (quality) podcasts available for iTunes users.
Think about it... If you're sweating your balls off trying to get out a timely and relevent podcast week after week, and you found out that you only have like 83 subscribers, you're probably either going to stop spending as much time & effort on it as you are, or you're going to move on to something more profitable/fulfilling.
If you're in the dark about your number of listeners, you're probably more likely to think you're fulfilling a need to the masses vs. entertainment for a few. - interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Until I have a podcast feed that's entirely composed of "***** clear channel ***** clear channel", Adam Curry will have to suffice.
He really shouldn't babble about tech though, he only half knows what he's talking about. - wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes they are. Their podcasting site helps sell iPods.
- BOOFMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The reason Adam Curry got to see his is Apple is the company bankrolling him. He works for Apple.
- wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, Apple needs to overhaul iTunes Podcasts. It is cute for a 1.0 product, but with the new features of podcasts.yahoo.com, it's starting to look outdated, and weighted to corporate shills.
They really need separate pages for different categories, like in the iTunes Music Store, where we can see, say, the top 10 music podcasts, or even the top 10 indie music podcasts.
RIght now actually finding a podcast through their menu system is ridiculous, filled with star spam, and not useful. It's like they don't care.
Yahoo is great at searching the RSS feed, and allowing the audience to review and rate the show.
What we really need is digg podcasts! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple needs a better way for podcasters to manage their feeds on itunes.
- frederic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If you use feedburner to re-direct you feed, it gives you all the stats you need. i know exactly what % of my subscribers use iTunes, and if they use it on Mac or PC."
If your show suddenly got very popular on itunes (like getting listed as a New and Notable), though, Apple would cache your mp3 and feedburner would not report those downloads. You might actually see a drop in subscriptions instead of what should probably a huge increase. - microphony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a newbie, I would like to know how many other people have subscribed. It would help me find the popular podcasts in my favorite niche
- wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The thing is though, Apple should have no problem filtering such over-clicks simply by filtering by IP, which would be very easy to do. But I take your point. Have they fixed the over-clicking problem anyway? If so, then even more they should release the stats.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://digg.com/links/NY_Times_Warns_of_Diggnation_s_Inflated_Podcast_Ranking
because of crap like this. thats why
+ digg - stingthebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think they do that so people won't start charging for their podcasts.
- ScottyTee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There wasnt really a need to take them away...

http://www.diggfans.com - Dawson1066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While we are on the topic, Adam Curry is, and always has been, a complete moron.
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Perhaps he is, it still doesn't change the fact Apple won't show people how many subscribers they have, and that stinks.
- kindrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Adam Curry is not even close to being a moron. Please, know your morons.
Jeez, one mullet and you're marked for life. - kindrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Dude, MTV doesn't just let just anyone be a VJ. :-)"

Hey, dfrag! I'd like you to meet someone very important to your future.
Sarcasm, meet dfrag. Yeah, I know he's ignored you completely in the past when everyone else in the room said hi, but give him a chance. - wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, it exposes people to the iTunes Music Store, and if podcasting ever becomes huge, and people start selling podcasting content, guess who gets a cut? Apple!
- trex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0guys, you gotta realize Apple's not making any money off podcasting.
- wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's true, but it would be nice. Actually for my stats, I can tell how many people are listening in iTunes, but not how many actually subscribed from iTunes. I use feedburner as well.
It would be nice to know how many people use the iTunes Music Store to find me. - chuckf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And if Adam got his numbers from Apple for his iTunes downloads, all others should get the same chance. If not, class action lawsuit.
Who knows what other info Apple gave to Curry and not his competition. - wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, that's exactly why I posted this. Apple has this holier than thou attitude, and needs to share what info they have to benefit the community.
- kdivad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Perhaps he was talking about his 'Pod finder' podcast, which Apple pay him to do.
- caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Forget Subscriptions...I would like to know about unsubscribes. Above poster is right...I know my stats, but if someone drops off, I would like to know that.
- jodamiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I'm not mistaken, Apple pays Curry to do his PodFinder podcast. So, being an Apple employee, he might be able to view things other podcasters are not allowed to.
- sedition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"..but he STILL discontinued his relationship for the TWiT podcast. To me that reads Leo's a nice guy, feedburner apologized but that Leo wouldn't have anything further to do with them. Leo actions speak larger then his words.."
Yah, he got a better deal from someone else. AOL I think. - wynnwill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I back up that comment. I like Adam Curry and I heard that episode. He went out of his way to read an email about the problems with iTunes podcasts and hoped that Apple would add some of the recommended features.
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The whole feed submission method at iTunes is screwed up. It's a total crap shoot. You should be given a log-in and an account so you can change your title, details, photo etc. at any time and look up your stats for subscriptions, downloads etc.
As for Adam Curry and Leo Laport being morons I thing you all need to stick your heads in a basin of cold water. These are the people out there doing the stuff that's really starting to make major media companies rethink whole strategies. You don't have to like them but you gotta cut em some slack. Leo Laport doesn't have the worlds best grasp of technology, true, but he manages to convince people that do to come do a show with him that's interesting, informative and funny all at the same time. What is more if someone on TWiT knows something he doesn't he lets THEM speak.
As for Adam Curry i think most people underestimate what he's done and is doing. Although he might not have totally created podcasting with his own hands, or written RSS 2.0, or whatever, he has had a major (neh pivotal) role in it's inception and growth. Here is a man who has a concept and he will not budge until he makes it happen - come hell or high water. I can see why he and Steve Jobs get on so well - they are very like-minded people. - sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0leo knows is stuff. at the risk of sounding like a fanboy, you're a moron. did you ever watch TSS? you can tell when people are faking their knowledge.
- ext237, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I can't believer nobody is ranting about Leo Laport's experience with feedburner."
Leo's a moron ... same class of moron as Curry. Only, Curry write's his own stuff, Leo has people to tell him how technology works, then he recites it on this shows. - ozjmu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Rabble Rabble Rabble

Senseo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - DFrag, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Because Apple along with Microsoft, are Devil Companies. They want your money, they don't give a ***** about quality or loyalty.
