- MikeOSX, on 06/23/2009, -5/+48It was an undoubtedly a conspiracy. And Apple would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids.
- darkfate, on 06/23/2009, -2/+29Well like they said, the normal drives they sell in it wouldn't even saturate the 1.5Gbps. The only issue comes with aftermarket SSD which makes it possible to saturate all 3.0Gbps of the SATA interface.

"Most industry observers Computerworld spoke to speculated that the MacBook Pro line was experiencing higher than acceptable data error rates related to the 3Gbit/sec. SATA interface." - gr33nie, on 06/23/2009, -1/+15They've also fixed the Bluetooth disconnection issues with the Apple wireless keyboard and mouse.

- pika2000, on 06/23/2009, -8/+21Wow, do people really think Apple did this in "response" to the complaints? Apple couldn't care less about that. It could've been just a bug or simply a wrong switch flipped during manufacturing. Besides, like others have said, most hard-drives are nowhere near that bandwidth. PC manufactures fix these kind of "BIOS" issues all the time. I guess the Apple whiners are so full of themselves to the point that anything Apple is doing is worth a frontpage news because it is in "response" to them.
- Zorakoid, on 06/23/2009, -2/+15Given that the cheaper MacBook had 3.0GBs turned on, and only the new unibodies had it turned off (the older 17" was unaffected), I suspect it was a mistake. It could have been a mistaken attempt at power/heat management, but I doubt it. More likely someone entered the wrong number into a table or someone failed to reset things to 3.0GBs after testing 1.5GBs.
- BossKey, on 06/23/2009, -1/+12What that tells me, having worked in tech, is that they wanted to ship the MacBook Pros at a certain time and by setting the interface to 1.5 they could avoid delaying the ship date to complete fixes and testing at 3.0, gambling that nobody would saturate it at 1.5 for now.
They shipped them at 1.5 and used the time since then to make it work right at 3.0, so they can now make the firmware update available. - krisrm, on 06/23/2009, -0/+11Woah! From what you said there, it almost sounds like you're extremely interested in science and programming!

- swmbuk, on 06/23/2009, -2/+8Despite being a post for Mac users or users of the new MBP or those thinking about getting one, yet again another Apple post is riddled with bigots trying to convert the world to their choice of product. If you're reading this and you dislike Apple then why the ***** are you here on the comments, seriously before you push the red button, look out the window! Is it daylight? If so then get out there and stop wasting time with hate! I like Macs I like Windows for games, and I have deep respect for Linux. What I don't like is ***** idiots who have nothing better to do than troll. I don't care for celebrities, I know I'll go on TMZ and troll the ***** out of the comments, NO that's lame.
Sorry for the rant, but every time anything Apple comes up, it's the same old *****. - MacParrot, on 06/23/2009, -1/+6And chances more than half the people whining don't understand the problem and/or didn't read the article. It's almost as sad as when people make snap assumptions on some issue with Windows.
Read the story first, then complain afterwards no matter who the company is - DontHassleHoff, on 06/23/2009, -3/+7Bury / report it and move on.
- alarchy, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4Highly likely, I am calling the local DA to investigate.
- RetepNamenots, on 06/23/2009, -4/+8Could anyone explain why they might have done this? Set the interface to half speed in the first place, that is?
- Tek12, on 06/23/2009, -3/+7You're a ***** moron if you think that. Not everything is a paid upgrade, idiot.
- danielwsmithee, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2If this wasn't a mistake there is no way this fix would be out by now. The complaints to fix was about 1 week. I guarantee you it would take them a lot longer to get the fix out then this if it was in response to largely meaningless complaint.
- defmer, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2so let me get this straight, they have limited HW platforms to support and even though it one most sold laptops , they could get hold/write of proper SATA drivers..... before mocking me look at the issue: Apple which makes the best of what ever it intends to do, could not get device driver to access it HDD..... one of the basic things that any vendor would look into first and I never said anything about paid upgrade.......half balled skunk
- krisrm, on 06/23/2009, -1/+3you'd probably sound
a lot more credible
if you didn't write
your comment in a manner
that reminded me of poetry - wschutz, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2No, they didn't (though I wish they did :)
Read (page 2 & 3) http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=72347 ... - Juaquin, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2I was glad to see this - I bought the new MBP 13" and ordered an SSD from Newegg. And yes, I was able to measure the bottleneck at 1.5Gbps. I wasn't too worried though (although it's nice that they fixed it) - I really just bought it so my drive wouldn't crash. I work at a college computer store and we see a bunch of MacBooks with dead drives.
- pika2000, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2Have you ever heard of a PR spin? Like I said, PC manufactures do this all the time with BIOS fixes. Leave it to the Apple haters whining about it in the first place, that now Apple could spin it to their benefit.
- clyde2801, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1With the EFI interface 1.7 update, a lot of people are reporting that their 3rd party hard drives (not just SSD's) aren't working! Swear to God, if it was MS that did something like this, we'd be lighting torches and calling our congressmen...

***** you, Apple Australia. - SteveMax, on 06/23/2009, -2/+3So?
When you buy a computer, specially a "pro" laptop, you assume you will have the possibility to change some of its parts (in the case of a laptop, RAM and the HD) for aftermarket options that may be better for your usage pattern. That may void some warranties, but the manufacturer can't assume you won't want that compromise.
As a comparison: Microsoft only allows Windows XP on netbooks with up to 1GB of RAM and 160GB of HD, despite the hardware allowing you to upgrade to 2GB of RAM and as big of a HD as you can find. Imagine if Windows XP used only 1GB or only 160GB even if you upgraded: people wouldn't be happy. The fact that you can upgrade the computer with higher end parts than what the manufacturer uses is assumed in any purchase, and artificially limiting that was a stupid move. Thankfully, it was reverted. - Juaquin, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Uh yes, yes they are. SSDs are rated for millions of hours. Regular hard drives in laptops crash randomly due to all the stress of being tossed around (anywhere from 4 weeks after purchase to 2 years, longer only if you're really lucky).
- superkendall, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Of course they did this in response from complaints. As noted, they themselves aid they still do not consider faster transfer rates supported, the only reason to issue the update was to let people use the faster speeds if they wished. There is no other reason to issue this *than* the user complaints.
- swmbuk, on 06/23/2009, -1/+2Actually the earlier umb's had SATA II, but please continue...
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -2/+3Fine, so they don't start at $1199?
If you are comparing stat for stat, a PC will be less expensive. I prefer to pay for a superior operating system and exceptional build quality. Find me that in a PC and I'm sold. Other than that, it's just about our preferences. - jorel009, on 06/23/2009, -1/+2battery life.
- Juaquin, on 06/23/2009, -1/+2You can get a 128GB SSD for less than $250 now, which is a good deal when you consider it isn't going to crash after a year or two like the stock drives.
- migitalwarfare, on 06/23/2009, -5/+6Even as a MPB owner, I have to laugh at that. Comparable PCs are most definitely cheaper. Your comment makes it seem like you think $1200 is a bargain.
- tupperbacharach, on 06/24/2009, -2/+2I'll stop pointing-out all the problems with Macs as soon as the fanboys stop claiming that Macs are superior.
- ownagenight, on 06/23/2009, -0/+0Well then Apple has some huge problems if spam or a virus caused this. Also for all the users to have this error would be quite interesting.
I do not think it out of their duty to fix it. - inactive, on 06/23/2009, -2/+2/block
- pika2000, on 06/23/2009, -1/+1Have you ever heard of a PR spin? Like I said, PC manufactures do this all the time with BIOS fixes. Leave it to the Apple haters whining about it in the first place, that now Apple could spin it to their benefit.
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -4/+3MacBook Pros start at $1199 now.
- Snappysnap, on 06/23/2009, -14/+13Why? Because someone goofed. Nothing sinister here. Now move along.
- Falldog, on 06/23/2009, -6/+4Definitely front page news that a bug was fixed.
- thants, on 06/23/2009, -4/+2I didn't read a single post trying to convert anybody.
>Sorry for the rant, but every time anything Apple comes up, it's the same old *****.
yeah, you're right. - Gee1004, on 06/23/2009, -4/+2You can't change these kids. I wish I had a lot of time spamming car manufacturers with stupid comments. Like I will go to BMW forum and spam. Lexus is better, BMW sucks. bla bla bla
- MikeFromAmerica, on 06/23/2009, -6/+4It's a bargain for a computer with an ExpressCard slot---oh wait...
- tupperbacharach, on 06/23/2009, -7/+5@yttrstein
Down, you rabid fanboy!
Of course, I can use 3gb/sec SATA II on my PC. I have a motherboard that can run six SATA II drives -- HD or SSD. If the motherboard controller is not good enough for you, anyone can get one of many SATA II controllers for their PC -- each one very capable of running 3Gb/s.
Since last January, PC over-clockers have been running SATA II with SSDs at near saturation.
Don't get mad at me because Macs can't handle it.
Again, "Macs just work!" - migitalwarfare, on 06/23/2009, -7/+4Unless you have proof, your statement is just as bad as all the conspiracy theories
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -4/+1You got SSD to use as your main drive because you didn't want your drive to crash?
SSD's aren't exactly main drive material... - Rudegar, on 06/23/2009, -7/+4interface mean little it's not a bottleneck
unless the data you are trying to read is
already in the buffer as in you just read it
a short while ago
the hd's themselves can do about 100MB/sec if they're fast - freshyill, on 06/23/2009, -6/+2Something to do with power management maybe?
