- ZMann, on 10/10/2007, -3/+54Google vs Apple fighting over the spectrum is much better than Verizon, Cingular, Comcast, or Time Warner, or News Media winding up with it.
- Gir9000, on 10/10/2007, -2/+52Cant see Apple doing this... But I can see Google and Apple making a deal and from the information this article gives, Jobs is just doing his homework.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -3/+38iFi
- sirdaz, on 10/10/2007, -28/+54I can see it now, an Apple only internet. iModem, iWeb. iPhone to have VOIP. All for an over priced service.
- iFungus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16You already are.
- iFungus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14"had to chop $200 of the iPhone coz no ***** was buying it"
1. Please use real english
2. A million iPhones have been sold, and only one of those weeks was at the new price. Please do your homework. - Braxo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Or Google AND Apple getting the spectrum....
- FLaw, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Why is the FCC "auctioning" off the spectrum? Why not make it open to all competitors instead of creating a monopoly?
- iFungus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Wouldn't it be worse in the hands of AT&T or another telecom?
- gnychis, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12somebody buy it and make it public, please :(
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11what the hell are you talking about?
- Burn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Sounds like a Digg user's wet dream.
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I dont think apple wants to be part of the telco industry, they want to provide the hardware and make 'meaningful partnerships' with companies like google.
However Apple helping google out a bit with the bid could mean a lot to future relations. - TravisS, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9would be interesting if Apple were to get the spectrum and offer it as a lower-priced alternative to cell service. We might finally get some innovation in the cell phone area. I am getting tired of cell companies using so many non-competitive strategies. Very very few people are satisfied with their cell phone provider.
- iFungus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9So the Linux distro "Ubuntu" should make a bid. You make no sense.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9With the "open access" rules that the FCC has put into place for this auction, it seems as if the customer will benefit, no matter what company acquires the spectrum.
- Stirk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6For money, maybe..
- gweedo767, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7They didn't approve all of the three "open access" rules as outlined by Google and a few others. The key one of letting any protocol over the spectrum didn't pass and that is the one that would have opened it up the most.
- drizzlelicious, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Google + Apple vs. Telemegagopolies?
- 5ampl3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5seems to me no one is really paying attention to the stipulations that the FCC has put on this frequency no matter who wins it.
- iFungus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Actually, their cash reserves are on par to the big players like google: http://blogs.business2.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/06/01/picture_15_2.png
- neoform, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8For sure, Apple might be doing pretty well for it's self these days, but it doesn't have +$4 Billion to blow on something like this the way Google does.
Like, when was the last time Apple acquired anything (costly) that it didn't create first.. ? NeXT? - Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Contrary to popular belief apple is a massive company!
they can hold their own! - puzzud, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I'd rather Apple have it than Microsoft, but I'm REALLY hoping Google gets it. If they don't, I will be almost as disappointed as I was when Bush got re-elected. I have heard about the auction for a while, but I didn't realize it was the analog tv frequency. And I remember a digg mentioning that eventually tv's where going to stop receiving radio signals, but I didn't put two and two together. Think about what that frequency has done in the past 40 years, and now imagine another 40... wow!
- HHogan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4$5? I think it would be 99 cents :P
Seriously though, a joint venture between Apple + Google would be better than the other companies. - superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5How should they decide which of however many people want the spectrum should get it? They could hold a contest where the interested poeple all offer sums of money to decide who gets to use it...
- wbsrfr14, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5What if Apple buys the spectrum gives away the wireless High Speed internet service for Apple products. So all Macs, iPhones, & iTouches get free internet access for free and charge a 9.99 monthly fee for P.C. users. They get a steady revenue stream from P.C. people and give a huge incentive to BUY Apple computers. The wireless internet service becomes a loss leader to sell Hardware that Apple sells.
- jeffchuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Shouldn't the FCC be looking out for the taxpayers who own it? Why not keep the airwaves in the hands of the public and lease them out to the company whose interests are most aligned with ours?
- futuretheory, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Will people please stop saying they only make luxury hardware please? I work 80 hours a week on my mac, it's not a luxury--it's a necessity.
- SPThom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4...and thusly you'd like to see Verizon get it? ...why?
Oh, I see... Because you'd rather pay a premium price for *BELOW-AVERAGE* service. - orlyfactor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Where's my iPorn?!
- torched, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Google software + Apple hardware (÷) joint service = KICK ASS!
- s0ny, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4According to yahoo finance (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ks?s=Aapl) Apple has 13.3 Billion dollars in cash just sitting around and 0 debt. Google has 12.5 Billion in cash so yes, if they wanted to, Apple definately could get into the market for this.
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6dyeing slowly!
- rasterbator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Duh. I only planted this seed back in May…

Here's your F, cause I dugg you down ya little bitch. - mgajda, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2May have sense for Google and Apple to join for open broadband. Google Ads could fuel cheapest broadband, which Apple needs for their gizmos.
- chaskell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There were actually four rules, and the FCC approved the two involving any hardware and any application.
- Boondoggle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Can you cite any examples of how Apple has violated any UNIX licenses?
Me think no. And OS X is fully POSIX compliant, unlike Linux. - xoineg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The best option would be having Apple and Google work together to create a kick ass network. Run apps from the network and apple supplies the hardware and some good services. Imagine macs, ipods and iphones all getting in sycn and being able to acces your files from any devices. Many possibilities maybe turning apple TV into a real TV receiver hehe.
- Boondoggle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Remind me again what percentage of Microsoft Windows Vista is open source?
- joejoeknows, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Apple and Google should merge. Goopple.
- judsond, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2lol, I love the sarcasm! :'(
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3That looks like ***** you ***** bag!
- damnyooneek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2theyre not going to bid on it if it will be available to be used by all devices. theyre just going to leech on whoever wins the bid.
- o2o2o2o2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Like use existing att/tmobile/sprint antennas?
The cost would be very high to buy service from the existing telcos. They dont want to be undercut and take business away from them. They are charging a fortune to use a competitors antenna, like att using a tmobile antenna for a call or data. This is why they will cancel you if you spend too much time roaming. - Billions, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think you're trying to say you want this new frequency to be 'Open Source/Free for everyone," so I'll cut you some slack for saying something like "The Office, Season Three should take over for Michael Vick now that Atlanta needs a new Quarterback!" But... Who's going to pay for that? You can't just whip up some open source code to print money. But yeah - you should donate your money - Linux users are really known for that.
- jcarrion1976, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The question is why is the FCC auctioning off a spectrum that they don't own?
- Rodman930, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2No. It would be the same execpt you could only use an iphone or Mac on it.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Too bad he wasted most of his money on combating world aids. :(
