- imikedaman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Apple patents things all the time. Don't read too much into this.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Their laptop hardware is already capable of multi-touch gestures (e.g. two-finger scrolling), since the last iBook revisions in 2004. It's just a matter of adding it in software.
- listrophy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Hello, Minority Report. My, how I've lusted after your control scheme for years.
- inkswamp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Where do you get 4 and 5? The illustrations are for 1-3 finger gestures.
- fpcyber, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5As much research as they put into that, I am sure there are loads of people who will still be confused by it.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3what the hell kind of gesture is Cut and paste? you need 3 contact points but it says you can do it with a thumb and a finger? what kind of mutant hands do apple employees have?
- drteeth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3But the only difference here is that Apple bought and now employs the guys who started FingerWorks, who had this stuff since the early '00s. I actually bought a Touchstream LP from them 4-6 years ago (I can't remember exactly).
I thought the same thing that you said ("surely this is not very original") when Microsoft came out with their "Surface". The TouchStream really is a marvel to work with. Check it out, if you wish:
http://www.fingerworks.com - geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3FingerWorks didn't invent MultiTouch either, just Apple's implementation. MultiTouch has been researched as a possible computer interface for at least 25 years now, with development work done at famous Bell Labs.
- KirinDave, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3A lot of these are just modifications of the gestures that the old MultiTouch FingerWorks keyboards used. I am a little surprised to see they actually seem to have used nearly the same gesture set as the old keypad panel gesture set.
I've heard Apple bought FingerWorks, so I guess this makes sense. - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You must be a Divinyls fan.
- Proximus10, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah it looks cool but think about how tired your arms would be with all the switching and selecting of windows. I prefer slightly moving my finger to get all my task done
- mergatroid, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I could see a future Apple laptop where the mechanical keyboard and mouse are replaced by a MultiTouch glass similar to the latest iPhone. Apple invented the mouse, then replaced it. Cupertino does it again!
Imagine ... - brokensince1982, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7im multi touching myself right now.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Someone actually married you??
kidding kidding - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Apple didn't invent the mouse.
- paulisnotdead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2don't digg him down he's right, xerox did but I think the mac was the first to put it in production, /not sure
- stupidbrowner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Where do you even get that this just applies to phones? I believe this patent is looking towards other devices such as tablet PCs and touchscreens of any other kind.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Apple didn't invent MultiTouch, Fingerworks did. Apple acquired it when they bought them out in 2005. But Fingerworks' MultiTouch does wayy more than pinching to zoom: http://www.fingerworks.com/gesture_guide_files.html
- ipodwheels, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3After Microsoft released "Surface", surely this is not very original. The worst thing is people see this and say, wow, Apple is really making another innovation. C'mmon guys... we are smarter than that.
- octophobic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I sold my LP on eBay for $900. Best keyboard I ever had.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Microsoft has some videos somewhere of them having cut a hole in the back of a laptop, and attached a multitouch sensor to the laptop screen itself. It's kinda cool.
- gmillerd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It builds on the existing interface, so there is little risk.
- robdazomba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Strange. The Apple key is a lot closer to the rest of the keys than the control key. I've used Windows extensively and Macs a little bit but I have to say I like the Apple key as opposed to the control key on Windows. You can do one-handed command-key combos a lot more comfortably on a Mac. Try singlehandedly pressing control+G vs. Apple+G sometime on keyboard and see what I mean.
- drteeth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I have one of FingerWorks TouchStream LPs. A great innovation back in the day and still a joy to use today. Good stuff.
- ironman110, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1the future is bright and its mouse- and keyless!!!juhuuuuu! Everybody steals, it`s who makes it their own that counts. Just like songs!
- jmander, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Reply to BOFH2's comment of :
"since this is apple what are they going to do with the middle finger gesture?"
My answer would be:
Save it for the "Windows" key? - BOFH2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1since this is apple what are they going to do with the middle finger gesture
- robdazomba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It's illustrating both left- and right-hand combinations in one pic.
- abandonedhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I wish I could say I was kidding too. I dugg you down.
- kelly, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2This would be sweet. If I had more opportunities to digg you up... I would.
- amrush4th, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2patents suck it, I can't believe people can patent touching. So if I fondle my wifes boob in wrong finger combo apple will sue me?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Of course Apple invented the mouse.
They invented maple syrup.
They invented fusion.
They invented those little tabs on your shoe laces.
They invented sticky notes (3m is lying)
They even invented life as we know it.
Shhh so long as the mac fans dont know better, they sleep better at night. - jmander, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0This coompany has been around for awhile now. Does the same thing...
http://www.frogpad.com/ - cheddarbek, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1300 gestures PER HAND!?
Jesus, that complicated an I'd have thought it was a Microsoft patent! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2no way theyre planning four and five finger gestures on an phone. i think multitouch will follow coverflow as the ***** we start seeing everywhere
- stubear, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0You've apparently never used a Mac. Appl einvented finger olympics with the creation of their apple key.

What is Digg?
