- AngryHamster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's still the iPod Video.
I don't know why people feel so vindicated by the idea that it WON'T be an iPod Video.
We all know its happening. The invite had a red curtain on it. Does that seem like it would be more appropriate for a PowerBook update or a video/movie related announcement?
Apple knows what how the "One more thing..." line gets people worked up. You think they are headlining an event with that slogan for hardware updates?
Intel is not coming early. I am sure there is more work that needs to be done on that front. Next June or July as Steve has indicated sounds like a much more realistic time frame.
Again, it’s an iPod video. I am not sure why the “cult of Mac gets off on defending everything Steve says (video is not suited to be a portable medium) when he has a lengthy track record of doing an about face on numerous topics. Video iPods will be one of those topics. - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
BS. Bumping up the PowerBooks and PowerMacs do not equate to a media event.
Can we have a "Bury" option to mark stories with to counter "Diggs"? - murph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think besides Apple handling the proprietary aspect of it's x86 hardware the only real thing holding up the x86 macs are developers. Even though rosetta will run the PPC binaries, Apple can't afford to rush them into a move this radical. This is most likely the final PowerPC update before the switch.
Check out the Apple store US though, because the PB ship dates are now delayed, usually a good signal of an upcoming update. Since it's almost certain they will refresh the lines, I hope it's nothing big because I just purchased a PB in sept. - ScottBookG4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everyone has overlooked this thing!
It's going to be the Mighty Mouse 1.5 featuring bluetooth. Morons. - roguepirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If this is just a minor speed bump, then Apple has learned well from Google/Sun.
- diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For comparison:
http://www.apple.com/music/ redirects to itunes.
as stated above, http://www.apple.com/movies/ is 403 Forbidden, while other URLs are 404.
Something more interesting than PowerBook, G5 Tower upgrades is afoot. - wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why would they sent an invite to iLounge.com then?
- WRXHokie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Definitely makes sense now... no WAY apple would release video ipods right after releasing the Nano. It would cut into their sales of the nano. New powerbooks finally... time for a new laptop.
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with Lynxpro- I don't see the reason for Apple to do another large media event just for some spec upgrades. Something fishy is up with this one.
I really hope it's a crappy release of something though; I just ordered an iMac G5 and if they make those uber cool next week... oi. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmmm..noticed something strange in diggerphelps response,
"Watch this space:
http://www.apple.com/movies/"
Try that link, I get- "Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /movies/ on this server."
try anything else that is incorrect, eg, just try apple.com/movis , you get page not found. - adamS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The video Airport Express mentioned on AppleInsider would be fantastic - I'd jump on that in a second. I don't think a PowerBook update is realistic - they gave it a minor upgrade already just a few months ago. The 4th gen iPod has had a VERY long lifetime as far as iPods go, and I think it's on its way out.
As others have said, the wouldn't try to build excitement/anticipation over a processor or memory upgrade. I honestly think they would get boo'd if that happened. - vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1im still waiting for the 32 inch widescreen powerbook...
- hawks5999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iTunes Media Store - Now with Movies.
iTunes begat iPod.
iPod begat iTMS
iTMS will begat iTMediaS (still iTMS)
iTMediaS will begat iPod Video.
For six months you will be able to download movies to your desktop to watch there or burn to DVD. Then the public outcry will be to take those downloaded movies with them. iPod Video will be relased. You also have to consider that Flash (as in memory as in Nano) is the future. In 6 months a 20 Gig Flash based iPod that plays movies with a thickness of the nano and a 16:9ish screen will be able to be manufactued and sold for $299-$399.
You heard it here first. - dickzorz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow i tried to ftp into www.apple.com/movies
it wont let me connect that way either.
something is gonna be there watch that spot. - javvidal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just think about it, why would Griffin Technologies release this "AirBase" http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/xpressstand/index.php so late after Airport Express' initial release. And Apple has completely ignored this product, so it's about time it gets an update, and with a bang!
- stingthebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Merle, doesn't make sense. Steve Jobs owns Pixar. He is the movie industry to a certain extent. I like Hawks explanation the best.
However, the curtain imagery doesn't have to mean movies or video or Tivo boxes. It could mean redesigned Powerbooks with built-in video.
All I do know is that there is no way Apple releases a near or distant competitor that steals away from Nano sales.
I would love to buy feature films from iTunes for $9.99* and have them play on my 17" Powerbook and have that rumoured Airport Express device that could wirelessly feed movies to your TV from your computer. I would totally be all over that like white on rice. Bye, bye Netflix.
DRM would allow a burned DVD and unlimited transfer from computer to TV. Gosh that would be sweet. It would also be sweet to transfer your homemade movies, photos, questionable downloaded material, etc... - OOTay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow how lame...
- javvidal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm taking a wild guess, but Airport Express with A/V out, integrating Quicktime to play vidcast/?/? ......
That would be nice, but boy would it be slow. - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0these aren't your ordinary powerbooks... prepare to be wowed.
- Markdoggin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about a video ipod that plugs into a wireless-g dock that connects to your hdtv, and all controlled via remote.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i definitly need my "questional downloaded material" broadcasting to my tv...oh yeah
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My prediction:
1) Upgraded PowerBooks, maybe Power Macs
2) Apple set-top box, maybe? Like an Apple Tivo? How cool would that be...? - grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Power Book with built in web cam
Power Book with built in Click Wheel
Both.
Apple Launch their 'we do make computers' ad champagne
Intel Power Book
OR
The whole Intel thing was a joke! 3GHz Power PC Processors for all! - il0vemymac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lets hope its not ture. Why would Apple hold a special event for something like updated PowerBooks? All recent special events by Apple have had to do with the iPod. Think Secret is usually right... but I really hope this time they are wrong.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i knew when this event was announced it was powerbooks not ipods....it'll be the last PowerPC powerbook
- topher1078, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree it has to be something more than a simple update to the line. The use of the "One more thing..." phrase implies a major updates. There have not been conferences for past product updates. Plus, the red curtains just scream video iPod.
I guess we could see a complete revamp of the Powerbook/Powermac line, but that would make little sense as the intel versions are coming soon.
We need a digg poll - we can all guess what's coming then see who's right - as for now my money is on an updated iPod or some other new product (NOT simple Powerbook updates). - jasontho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think Steve would use the "One more thing" saying just on updates to power macs and power books. Most of the time they don't have an event to release updates. I think it's got to be something bigger than that. I doubt it's the x86 macs, not sure what to think about and iPod video but that would definitely be something to , "one more thing" about. I think right now the only person that really knows is Jobs.
- Javali, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really don't think that the introduction of a video iPod could hurt them in any way. There is no competition between these 2. People who would buy a Nano are not necessarily the ones that would buy a videoPod.
iPod Nano + video iPod = $$ Apple's Monopoly $$
They win no matter which way you go. - atoaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wasn't there a patent for a tablet computer? *shrugs*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Excellent quotes from the Slashdot posting comments:
"But why would an mp3 player company release computers?"
"Apple will release a viPod shuffle which will support automagic shuffling of your videos and, to make smaller it easier to use, no screen." - DrMerle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just think, HD Tivo type box, HD video iPod, (yeah I know the screen would have to be less than 1080i, but it could be the the same aspect ratio, and have an output you can plug into your HDTV.
This is supposed to be the year of HD right, why would they even release a iMovie HD unless they were gonna give people a reason to want to create content with it, and it sure isn't going to be burned to HD-DVD, or Blue-Ray anytime this year. - DrMerle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I predict a Tivo type box, with a dock for the new: video iPod. I also predict DRM of the content that the box records, so it can only be loaded to you, (and maybe family members) video iPods. This seems like something that would be huge. They dominated the MP3 market because they made the slickest player, they could easily to the same with the DVR market.
Also, let's say it's just a video iPod and there is not much content out there yet, well, that means that all of a sudden there is huge demand for content, and people start finding ways to rip their DVD's and load them on their video iPods, Apple just shrugs and tells hollywood there is nothing they can do to stop them, then hollywood is forced to agree to sell movies through iTunes, at what I would predict to be just less than they charge for the typical DVD, probably 9.99 since most DVD's are 15 or so.
Let's hope they do it, and let's hope they do it right. Like other's have said, if they make it something like Tivo, they need to skip the subscription idea, that or roll it into .Mac so you are getting more for your money than a digital VCR with a subscription. - m4v1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a simple update does not require a special media event, however, dual core dual G5 + G5 powerbook is not a simple update
- cankles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+020 gigs wouldn't be big enough for a video ipod...crappy versions of movies are between 300-600 mb. A good high def version is around a gig. I would want to hold more than 20-40 movies. With all these podcasts beginning to host videos now, there would be alot of stuff I would want to watch. A video Ipod would need around 40-80 gigs. Don't expect a video ipod anytime soon, and don't expect a flash based video ipod anytime later.
- roguepirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+020 Gig flash, considering a 4 gig flash costs $250, a 20 gig would be pricey also, i believe flash memory comes in 2,4,8,16,32... it'd be awkward to make a 20 out of 5 4 gig IC's.
- lico05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My crazy prediction:
* No video iPod
* iTunes store update w/video or movies?
* Airport w/video out
* Some kind of Apple LCD TV (or even Tivo...) - AngryHamster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"What would work much better is what that slashdotter As Seen On TV (who mysteriously disappeared after talking about this) is if apple released an Airport Express that streamed HD video to a TV. Plus, apple could totally own the HD video distribution process, bringing to market a device way before anyone else."
What exactly would it be streaming and from where? The majority of worthwhile HD content is already on TV. I don't see this as being something worthwhile unless there is a plethora of desirable HD content on the computer that I would want on my TV, and that all leads me to believe that we would still be looking at an Itunes Media STore that sells videos.
I mean Command N is good and all but would I buy a device specifically to stream it to my TV in HD? Probably not.
Would I buy a similar device if I could stream HD movies to my TV? Probably - Javali, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple has absolute control of the MP3 player market and no one comes close, no doubt. Despite this fact they've also been pretty aggressive about retaining their sovereignty. Haven't they?
"Who ordered that?" was my first thought after seeing Jobs present the Nano to the crowd last month. After all, the iPod Mini was the #1 selling player in the world... Why replace it? Because Apple does not want to loose even an inch on their supremacy foothold.
The same principle applies here. There is no pressure for an iPod video at this time but they surely wanna beat any other potential rivals out there to the #1 portable audio/video player in the world. It makes sense to delay it a while to give some space to the Nano but I think the different players belong to two very different sub-markets. After all, profits would still go to Apple and nobody else, hence there isn't really any competition between these two... it all stays in the family.
If they announce a video iPod on the 12th, I will probably buy one on the 13th! - acraig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why would they make such a big deal out of a powerbook/powermac update? I mean, that's not cause for the "one more thing" quote with all its innuendos.
Maybe it's just something no one has thought up. - pophysis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://digg.com/apple/Intel_Based_Powerbooks_as_Soon_as_December

agreed. - caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just talking about all this, and speculating... you are falling in to Steve's master plan.
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@hawks5999
THAT IS EXACTLY IT!!!!
To think that this merely a powerbook upgrade is ***** retarded!!! I mean what the *****, if jobs did an event every time there was an upgrade for a computer he would have one every week for the mac mini. As i said in another article on digg and as hawks5999 states perfectly, Jobs will release the iTunes movie store, people will want to carry movies with them, and Jobs will release the iPod video possibly early next year at an event such as the Macworld expo. I defiantly do not thing that the ipod video will come out next week, it would smash the crap out of ipod nano sales and would be a very big mistake.
Oh and by the way, isn't the 17 inch display on the 17 inch powerbook already wide screen format? - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the transport of movies off the computer and to the TV is clumbsy at best... Apple should enter this market and pwn all those n00bs with something streamlined and simple / elegent. yet powerful and flexible.
- geezusfreeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I say iTunes Movie Store, but instead of a video iPod, it will be a video Airport Express. That would be the most killer combination ever!
- parrotscience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can almost guarantee that there will be a MAJOR upgrade to the iBook line. I know this because I delayed replacing my iBook for months and just bought one two weeks ago. Now that it is setup I am fully prepared for a several hundred dollar price drop in the equipment I've just purchased.
- DrMerle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0" I would want to hold more than 20-40 movies."
I think most people would settle for 5-10 high quality H.264 movies on the thing at a time. I know that would be enough for me, but sure, 40 gigs sounds about right. 20 does sound small, how about 40, and HD movies on the thing for ten bucks each, that would be ***** swank. - cankles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1maybe they will release a steve jobs action figure with a pull string that says, "I wish you people would get off my nuts."
- DrMerle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, and like other people have said, they probably will introduce new machines first, starting with the boring upgrade to the Mac Mini's, then the PB, and PM. Then near the end, the one more thing, is two more things, PVR and Video iPod....
- jasondefaoite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0According to the BBC, its a video iPod. They'll be hosting an apple event in London on the 12th related to the announcement of the device, and how BBC content will be available on the iTunes Movie store ..
