Apple Developer Connection: Web Development for iPhone
developer.apple.com — The following guidelines will help you prepare web content and design a website or web-based application for iPhone. If you are a seasoned web developer, there are probably just a few refinements you can make to ensure that your site looks great and works best on iPhone.
- 520 diggs
- digg it
- sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/11/2007, -14/+3it goes without saying, but i'm going to say it anyway: FINALLY!
- brainovermind, on 10/11/2007, -14/+5Oh no. The internet can now only be viewed over the iPhone. (page not looking good at all for me at the moment. )
Maybe someone should send Apple a link to developing web content for the PC.- CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6That page looks fine in all standards compliant browsers - Firefox, Opera ans Safari. Not good in IE, which I assume you are using?. Prehaps someone should send Microsoft a link about browser standards compliance.
- EmurS1ve, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3If only i could use that "standards compliance" excuse when developing sites for clients, In the real world, if it doesnt look good in IE it doesnt matter if its standard compliant, it just looks like sh** and thats all the 70%+ using IE care about... the only true standard Im concerned about that which is defined by the market, and unfortunatly the market says IE is the unofficial standard...
- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Again this is apple you are talking about. I don't care if IE was able to pass some ACID test, Apple would still code their website to look poorly on IE. It is what they do... Look at quicktime for the last forever... It breaks a perfectly functioning Vista computer.
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@B1663r
yes im sure apple codes their pages with the sole purpose of making them look bad in IE! - CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I don't disagree, I do a lot of Web dev too, and I have to put a bunck of CSS hacks in for IE, especially IE 6. I guess my point is MS could choose to follow standards and make our lives easier.

- Alegoo92, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Ugh. Third party support should really be here. Hope Apple doesn't stay all stubborn and lock down iPhone like this.
- shadowswordth, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Unlikely.
- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I don't know, it took them a while but apple finally relented and released the SDK for the iPod. So its not like this option is totally out.
- lordmike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They did? Where?
- lordmike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, more than likely... Jobs has been locking down apple products since the ill-fated Apple III... He tried to lock down the Apple II, but Woz wouldn't let him.

- sctechguy, on 10/11/2007, -12/+3What is this iPhone you speak of?
- dallyp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That joke has been used way too many times to still be funny.
- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1These are not the phones you are looking for /waves hand
- tobleronejones, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm not sure it was funny in the first place.
- dallyp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That joke has been used way too many times to still be funny.
- frostieDude, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3They presented this same information at WWDC.
- smurf22, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Chat app here I come!

This was on the front page already TODAY - n0ydz, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20This was already on the front page, just a few hours ago. http://www.digg.com/apple/Apple_Posts_Web_Development_Guidelines_for_iPhone_2
Normally, I don't complain about dupes, but lately I have noticed more than usual on Digg.- CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1Well I've been hitting Digg pretty regularly all day and I haven't seen it... Digg has a HUGE audience - there is no way that everyone or probably even 50% are going to see everything that hits the front page the first time...
- jasongdx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Well maybe people should just start learning to take the 2 seconds it takes to check if the article as been submitted. There's a page during the submission that helps you with this, and it works extremely well, too.
- Burn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You realise that the one you just linked to IS the dupe, right?
- CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1Well I've been hitting Digg pretty regularly all day and I haven't seen it... Digg has a HUGE audience - there is no way that everyone or probably even 50% are going to see everything that hits the front page the first time...
- sedawk, on 10/11/2007, -8/+10STOP DIGGING -- ITS A DUPE!
(and yes, I know I'm yelling) - Angostura, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Buried as a dupe, from about 2 hours ago.
- dh89, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1From CraigJ: "there is no way that everyone or probably even 50% are going to see everything that hits the front page the first time..."
This story is one the front page TWICE at the same time... - Kindjal, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0dito
- erickas2shy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1so who are here over the age of 21?
- n0ydz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I am, but just curious what that question has to do with this article?
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1why?
do you want to date rape me or something?
- Nitroadict, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3any realistic web designer will ignore this sad attempt at apple to fragment the browser market. who the hell is really gonna develop their website a specific design for the iphone except a few apple fanatics?
- dustinmacdonald, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That's not the idea. The information provided by Apple helps you optimize your current website to work better with the iPhone. A few lines of code can go a long way.
- Vapid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Rofl. You've gotta be kidding me. The iPhone has nearly 1 million users now (over 700,000 in just the weekend) and you're telling me no one is gonna develop a site specifically for that? The iPhone has insane potential and you've gotta be blind not to see that.
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2*any realistic web designer will ignore this sad attempt at apple to fragment the browser market.*
your right, any real web developer would strive to make his page look great with every browser he could! - deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Any realistic web designer will do what their client asks them to do.
- VeganBob, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Buried as lame.
- Ricapar, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3This sucks. No file uploads? No downloads? Way too many lock-ins. =(
- Skeuomorph, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1File uploads and downloads would require a file browser. Ever used the file browser on a Windows Mobile device? Now try to think of what could possibly go wrong for someone that isn't a tech geek.
- zetsurin, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2I'm going to do whatever I can to ensure that any websites I work on are incompatible with this device as I am sick of hearing it. Besides I don't want a bunch of fart sniffing iProduct types filthing things up. Digg down all you like but it won't give you a true SDK.
- deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1k thnx.
- gafasiesornivek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1This has already been posted in the last 24 hours and it sucks even more than the first time around.
