- sjbdallas, on 02/07/2009, -3/+105Why do you need to log into facebook from the apple store? Are you wanting to see if your page would look better on a mac? Or do you just want to set your status to "...at the Mac Store!"
- DeathJux, on 02/08/2009, -0/+64Folks, these sort of things are done on a store by store basis, depending on the problem.
Apple doesn't block sites as a rule, but individual stores might.
I used to work at the Apple Store in the Southdale Mall in Minnesota, and we blocked MySpace for many months, as teens and tweens would completely take over all the machines and be loud and obnoxious. Customers complained, so management blocked the site.
Man, there are so many stupid articles that take one store doing something and apply it blanket to an entire company. - inactive, on 02/07/2009, -18/+74Don't worry, Its not a bug, Its a Feature.
- thelab101, on 02/08/2009, -3/+47and in other news, a single celled amoeba passed away from old age last night.
- alibanana, on 02/08/2009, -2/+38Because people treat the Apple stores as internet cafes and a lot of people use facebook.
- mjr4189, on 02/08/2009, -3/+35lol, so what? you cant check facebook while your shopping. big deal, suck it up.
- raydeen, on 02/08/2009, -1/+31Some people are just that addicted.
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -2/+31is it really that big of a deal?
- roxgod666, on 02/08/2009, -1/+25Without the cafe part...and no chairs. People who go to the apple store to "hang out" might be the dumbest people on Earth.
- AdonalFoyle, on 02/08/2009, -4/+21it's
- seinman, on 02/08/2009, -1/+14No. No, it isn't.
- spoonchucks, on 02/08/2009, -0/+13Take pictures of your package and post it as his profile pic.
Net security is everyone's responsibility. :) - OhSnapVince, on 02/08/2009, -0/+13As another former employee of the Evil Empire I can vouch that site blocking is done on a store-by-store basis. Not that it matters, if you block a site on your router the kids always found some sort of firewalled version of MySpace that let them log in.
The good part about the stores is that they allow you to really demo the features of the computers, the downside is that they're in or near malls where kids lurk. At my old store, if someone was at a computer for too long we'd ask them if they needed help. They got the hint.
PS To everyone who looked up porn on the iPhones: Can you at least close the window so the next person using it doesn't complain that there's porn on the screen? Thanks. - Dotcommer, on 02/08/2009, -0/+13NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
- rAid135, on 02/08/2009, -2/+13Its so that teenagers don't use photobooth and then immediately upload them to facebook for all their friends to comment on...
- Aldanga, on 02/08/2009, -5/+14*you're
- EnderMB, on 02/08/2009, -0/+9They should. Every time I look at the iPhones I find that some kid is still logged into Facebook.
- spoonchucks, on 02/08/2009, -0/+8Amen. It's just a ***** store. Is anyone going there that often, not to mention staying there long enough to use Facebook?
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/08/2009, -0/+8people use the apple store as a free internet cafe spending a very long time on there playing on the internet. They have no intention of buying, they just want to hang out, and that hurts sales.
- efitz11, on 02/08/2009, -0/+8is this a real comment?
- turquoisefish, on 02/08/2009, -0/+7I wanted to try out iWork 09 recently and couldn't get on a computer because of all the children and teenagers using all the Macs for Photobooth and Internet, no way most of them were even barely interested in buying something, I was and they lost a probable sale that day.
- DeathJux, on 02/08/2009, -0/+7Sadly, yes, people spend absurd amounts of time at the stores.
I transferred to the Regent Street store in London, and there was one guy who I saw on numerous occasions coming in around the start of my shift (noon) and leaving when the store closed (9 PM).
I don't really understand whether it's the computer access, the gregarious environment, some sort of desire to look "cool" at an Apple store, or some combination of all of the above that drives people to spend so much time. - raydeen, on 02/08/2009, -3/+9Monty Python's Flying Circus.
- mjr4189, on 02/08/2009, -2/+8Thank you for the correction. That was clearly the point of my comment.
- neopran, on 02/08/2009, -0/+6lol... it's Apple own computers, therefore they can deny access to whatever they want, just like I can do the same for my own computer which I can let someone use ...
Wow ... what a waste of time ... - greydonkey, on 02/08/2009, -0/+5I'm surprised that Apple stores don't block all the pr0n at router level. That would be the most effective way of dealing with it, surely?
- MacParrot, on 02/08/2009, -0/+5Well if a &*^% got a good running start...
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -0/+5You're obviously not familiar with the useless people who need to check their facebook while at an Apple store.
- ehaugan, on 02/08/2009, -1/+6Why is this a big deal? So they dont want people wasting time behind the machines surfing facebook? They have every right to block it!
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -0/+5last i checked, &*^%s don't fly
- dar0za, on 02/08/2009, -0/+5who the hell cares if some of the stores block facebook? any store with computers on display is going to have a router set up for them, and apple has no need to regulate the settings of it so it's the same on each store. i can see why managers would use their own discretion to log into the router and block certain URLs. why anyone would "report" these instances to anyone, or digg an article on it up to the main page is beyond me.
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -1/+5false
- MonkeyFit, on 02/08/2009, -0/+4You should screw with their profile. That seems like the obvious thing to do.
- cynicalbrit94, on 02/08/2009, -0/+4You want to block ALL the pr0n? My school hasn't quite managed to block ALL the pr0n.
- 2of8, on 02/08/2009, -0/+4I thought people went to stores to buy things :P
- flarn2006, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3Liar! +7 / -0
- EnderMB, on 02/09/2009, -1/+4My list of things to do with Facebook accounts that are still logged in:
1) Break up with their boyfriends/girlfriends
2) Change their gender (pending operation)
3) Change their sexual orientation.
4) Create group requesting funds for a successful sex change op, inviting all friends as a result
5) Change status to "my ex-boyfriend's/girlfriend's panties feel so good against my new package/vag". - bigbangbuddha, on 02/09/2009, -1/+4Next time you're at Verizon looking for a phone, ask them if you can call someone first.
- vsaint, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3Who gives a *****, the apple store is paying for the internet connection, they can block whichever sites they want.
- StandardsDT, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3That's when either A) You politely ask the guy if you could use the computer for a bit as your wanting to see if you want the 30" display or B) You go up to one of the employees and explain your thinking about buying the 30" display but you can't check it out because some one is holding up the machine it's hooked up to.
I think B probably would have been your best bet. - Hincapie, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3kids were taking pictures with photobooth and posting them to their facebook pages while still in the store. an apple store employee told me they had to block it to keep the kids away. they are pretty annoying.
- Epitaph, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2Blocking /all/ the pr0n is impossible. Pr0n production moves at the speed of light. You could try to catch up with it, but it'll just get faster (or are you just getting slower?)
- Epitaph, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2Liar! +9 / -0
- Epitaph, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2if anything, myspace is a low budget facebook. Facebook kicks ass simply from a programming prospective. I give them a tip of the hat.
- 2of8, on 02/08/2009, -0/+2I completely agree.
- sfacets, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2No one hangs out there... it is just free internet.
- lightningrod220, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2How about Yahoo messenger? There was once some douche bag wearing a wife-beater in the Michigan Avenue store for an hour or so - I wanted to check out the 30" display (yes, I was planning to buy one), but that tool was on Yahoo messenger the whole ***** time.
- mrBitch, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2@ roxgod RE: " [ internet cafe ] ... Without the cafe part...and no chairs. People who go to the apple store to "hang out" might be the dumbest people on Earth."
I can't fault your logic. - roxgod666, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2Because cafes serve coffee, and sometimes food. They have chairs and best of all, you can actually bring YOUR computer and work on your own stuff. Not to mention cafes are always quite while apple stores usually have employees walking around and helping people out.
- anaclagon, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2Good! Don't let it happen again or I'll be forced to use the shovel on you.
