Apple Debuts iWork '08
engadget.com — According to good-old Steve Jobs, productivity powerhouse iWork'08 is on the way, and it will feature a ton of enhancements for Keynote and Pages, plus it introduces a new app to the mix: Numbers. The new component will apparently be giving Excel a run for its money, with a slew of new data-handling functions, and spreadsheet-ing capabilities.

- NeoRicen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Looks good, Macs are lacking decent Word Processors, there's Word which isn't even universal yet and there's Pages which looks to be improved enough for me to use full time.
- Herolint, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I like Nisus. I think it is a pretty good word processor.
- Herolint, on 10/10/2007, -11/+1I like Nisus. I think it is a pretty good word processor.
- Herolint, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Wow! Two posts for the price of one. Digg is so superior lately.
- B1663r, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3Its not that at all. The fanboys were taking such a pounding on the other thread, it was time for the Apple mafia to use their multiple accounts to front page another article.
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3And try as hard as they can to bury yours... ;-). Nobody cares about any one company as much as this site purports them too. If apple users thought they were using a better product, and are normal people, they'd prefer to keep it to themselves and be happier knowing they have it easier and better (kind of like the majority of some other software manufacturers user base is doing).

- jsmrekar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1BEAN FTW!!!
http://www.bean-osx.com/Bean.html- MonkeyFarts, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Bean's okay, but I just can't use it because it doesn't do footnotes. Why they don't add such simple functionality is beyond me, but until they add footnote support, I cannot use it because I cannot cite my sources appropriately for research papers and such.
- static_13, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Pages is so much better than the freakin MS Word.
- PhonicUK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1OpenOffice.org has a Mac version :P

An official Aqua native release of Open Office itself is in development. - NeoRicen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I said DECENT word processor...

iwork better support ODF formats....- darkalias, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hoping for ODF support with Leopard then...
- chrisgeleven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No ODF formats. Not that I am crying over it (have a copy of NeoOffice).
- ecchi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm crying over it. I can't stand Neo Office. So bloated and slow. Neo office 2.2x at least will have support to use the Mac spell checker instead, which is a relief. I'm still incredibly disappointed. And confused. Since Leopard's TextEdit supports ODF.
- gaucho4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2iWork '08 supports Open XML.

- meshman, on 10/10/2007, -12/+3I remember this when it was called "Microsoft Works".

- Zer0Fade, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23Working great so far, just picked up my copy during lunch. Love the fact that I can edit .docx files, huge plus
- tmarcV2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Just picked up my copy as well. Don't know if this is a completely new feature but it blew me away with how geniously simple it was, Keynote presenter mode.
- vault, on 10/10/2007, -0/+32Download the 30-day trial here http://www.apple.com/iwork/trial/
- darkalias, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Oops, a whopping 468 MB... But after trying Numbers, I'd say it's worth it!
- yabos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9That's not that much. How many GB is office? Actually I'm surprised it's that small because Keynote templates take up a lot of space.
- pak314, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My Office 2000 install is about 98MB in the program directory. Of course there may be some other files scattered around but it shouldn't be more than twice that I think.

- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Boy, it doesn't look like that corporate spam was well disguised. It even included the "30-day" part instead of "get the trial version here" which I'd expect from a comment.
- vault, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Man, you are good...no fooling you at all. Are you sure you're not a private investigator by day? I admit it- I was secretly paid by Apple to post that comment. Part of our (Apple and I's) evil plan to get people using the new iWork with links to download the trial.
Please...I was just trying to be helpful and let people know it's for 30 days.

- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13from the Engadget comments: "All iWork and no iPlay makes Stevey a dull boy"
I don't this person but I want them dead.- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Dugg for bringing that comment to my attention, Love it!! Someone was 'smart enough' (ha!) to come up with iPlay before me, so I guess I can't claim iTrademarked it like iDid below.
- anonym41414, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Your comment no verb.
- jabberwolf, on 10/10/2007, -23/+4Wow an Apple spreadsheet program. How hip and "innovative". Will that come with baby music too?
- whiteyMcBrown, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6You're a knob.
- jkoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah. That sucks. I hate having choices for software.
- Raian, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16I just got back from the Apple Store-- I have to say this is pretty nice, and much better than '06
- kris33, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I tried the trial, and I have to say that iWork 08 is amazing.
- NSResponder, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Got a link for that? I haven't seen any iWork 08 trial version.

- JimmyRyan, on 10/10/2007, -12/+2At what point are we going to get tired of the cute "i" stuff (let's face it.... its bound to happen..lol) What happens to Apple then?
If you think I am being cute i'm not. I would be very worried about that if I was marketing this stuff!- krakelohm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4what makes 'i' at the begining cute? It is a product name.
- RetardoCrisp, on 10/10/2007, -15/+2Who cars!!?? Frikken Apple n Digg....I bet you would buy Apple undies too since they have the corporate logo, right...so sick of seeing Apple in Digg......
- Stirk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6You can block the Apple section if you want. Also, if you /really/ dont care, then don't post.
- B1663r, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2But you cant block the effect that the Apple section has on the rest of Digg, and everyplace that links to digg (although I notice some sites are starting to take down their "digg it" icons). It is really getting obnoxious, and as far as I am concerned it is ruining, not only digg, but the rest of the internet as well.
So expect to continue to be smacked down, when it needs to happen.- ScrumFritter, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5What effect does it have on the rest of Digg? Without the Apple section, no Apple stories, boom. If you're talking about fanboyish comments like "Wow, I like this new Apple product" in another story, then fine, whine away, but if you turn off the Apple section you can seriously decrease your intake of iStories, and from the sound of things, your blood pressure.
The people that seem MORE vehement are the people that badmouth Apple stuff. "OMG NOT MORE iSTUFF". No one's making obnoxious comments like "Everyone should switch NOW, everybody! You all SUCK because you don't use a Mac, AHAHAHAHAHA", although after reading comments like these, I feel compelled to make them myself.
Also, do they make Apple undies? That would be so awesome.

- elitexero, on 10/10/2007, -19/+5Surprise, surprise, another ridiculously overpriced, near useless product that the multitudes of mindless apple users will gobble up
- hyperpasta, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20$79 for an office suite is overpriced? I'd hate to see what you think of MS Office's price tag.
- B1663r, on 10/10/2007, -13/+4Um, feature wise this is more comparable to Works than Office, and that costs $40.
However the Apple Mafia will make sure you are dug up, while I am dug down.
- B1663r, on 10/10/2007, -13/+4Um, feature wise this is more comparable to Works than Office, and that costs $40.
- turquoisefish, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6ridiculously overpriced? it is £55 here, much much cheaper than office
- schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3Not even remotely comparable to Office, more like Works.
- Herolint, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I don't think you can really compare iWork to Works. iWork looks like it has features that even Office doesn't, like the way you can layout your spreadsheet documents, and Pages lets you do page layouts that aren't even possible in Word let alone Works.
However, when it really comes down to it, of the bazillion features in Office, how many do you really use? 10%? 15%?
- Herolint, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I don't think you can really compare iWork to Works. iWork looks like it has features that even Office doesn't, like the way you can layout your spreadsheet documents, and Pages lets you do page layouts that aren't even possible in Word let alone Works.

- rightmindx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Uh, the entiire iWork office suite costs $79.00, compared with $299.99 for the standard version of Microsoft Office for Windows. Sure iWork may not be quite as robust as MS Office, but for casual home and small business users looking for a good, simple-to-use word processor, spreadsheet application and presentation software, it's a much better deal.
- B1663r, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2Pardon the pun, but that is an Apples and Oranges comparison. This is more comparable to MS Works than Office.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I would agree except for the fact that Keynote kicks the ***** out of powerpoint. It absolutely devastates it, which is why those lists of top ten presentation tips usually start with 'use keynote, not powerpoint'
- Herolint, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I disagree. As meatmcguffin said, Keynote kicks PowerPoint all over the stage. Pages lets you do layouts that aren't even possible in Word, let alone Works, and Numbers looks like it has good layout features as well, whereas Excel lacks in this area (nevermind Works again).
I agree that iWork is similar to Works in the pricing department though.

-=-=- - diggaiden, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11So is this the reason why they delayed Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac? Kidding aside, the Mac BU over at MS might want to hurry along with their release, because a lot of the casual Mac users who might have been waiting for Office 2008 will probably decide to just get iWork 08, now that they can use Numbers.
- gaucho4, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yup, I'm going with iWork. I don't use any of the advanced features in Word really. With educational pricing at my university, Office 2008 and iWork '08 will cost almost the same. I've been a big fan of Pages for a while and Keynote would take out PowerPoint in a cage match any day.
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -12/+2Oh come on people, is this an Apple Corporate Website, 4 of the "top 10" articles in Digg now have Apple in the title, and they're all pro-apple. Are apple press releases the _only_ thing in the news? [edit: I mean other than Ron Paul spam]
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2I should've expected to be dugg down pretty quickly, I'm pretty sure apple has several hundred employees (or at least accounts) dedicated to spamming digg now just like Ron Paul does. It's truly a shame, it's corruption on the level of ballot box stuffing in the general election -- except the poor users here don't see it and there's no management/regulation. I mean this is a news site, at least according to the digg.com/news url and there is nothing but campaign ads (oddly "no one but ron paul is being submitted here") and Apple advertisements here disguised as stories. I intentionally replied to myself because I know I'm only talking to myself and once that comment is completelyburried so will this one be, but it saves someone a click.
- B1663r, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2I hear you brother. Look for websites without the "Digg it" button under the articles, and they seem to be free'er from the digg moron effect.
- reefdog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Personally, I dug you down because I think you're incorrect. There are so many stories on the front page right now because Apple's product announcement events (which happened today) are big deals in the tech sector. The type of tech-savvy person who frequents Digg is the same sort of person whose ears perk up when there are big tech-world announcements. Apple is pretty durn popular right now, so if they sneeze, people listen. It doesn't take a team of marketing people.
- B1663r, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Oh, Bull *****! There was exactly one story posted on Digg for Microsoft Surface when that announcement happened. People respected the dupe filter. Who ever posted this article OBVIOUSLY ignored the dupe filter and then someone used a mass digg program to front page it. It happened almost exactly the moment the other thread went off the front page.
Now watch me get dug down by the digg mafia.- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What! Only one story for a product that costs $10K and is still experimental as compared to a complete product line refreshment and releases of software that a lot of people were waiting for??? Who woulda thunk it!

- bpapa, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7LOL, I seriously doubt Apple is using Digg as a platform to push their products. People are just passionate about Apple's products (because of the quality) and hence get excited about all the new stuff that came out today.
Anyways stop bitching, people are digging it.- B1663r, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2Wow, you are naive. Watch how articles are dugg in block votes some times. - 2shae, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12iWork '08 looks great and for most people it is perfect like students and (relatively) small companies...actually I never understand what kind of 'special' features MS Office has that no other competitor has...never seen or used them I guess :S
I'm getting iWork '08...screw MS Office '08- Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3How about it works in the business world?
Office has no special features for the home user but if you're a business or pro user Office has plenty of things OO or iWork doesn't have.- nav1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Such as?? (actual question, no flaming intended)
- Herolint, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I'd like to know as well. I've been able to do everything I want to in both a business and a "pro" setting for years without a single Microsoft product. In fact, the reason I dumped Word in the first place was its inability to handle large documents.
- Bikechess, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ramble is correct. Other than data entry and format conversions, Xcel is horrible. Spreadsheets are way overused. If you do scientific-type or very complex spreadsheets, then do not throw away Excel.
But for normal everyday home users, there is no reason to go for office now. iWork fills that void perfectly.

- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Nope, burried those too.
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I'm seriously thinking of Boycotting Microsoft Software and services because they support advertising on this site!!! (Try digging that one down apple fanboys)
- virtualball, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wait...huh? Shouldn't you boycott this site instead? Also why would Apple fanboys hate you for boycotting Microsoft?
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1I'm not going to figure it out for you. I, as well as most of america, boycott _advertisers_ of sites that promote false, misleading, inaccurate, or otherwise bad information. That's why TV has so much more credibility than the web. If I were to boycott this site, that would accomplish nothing, if I boycott it's advertisers, I take money away from the site and do real damage. By that i don't mean to say as an individual I have that much buying power, but if enough people get together it will be a lot more effective than the otherwise-posted "do nothing strike". What it will do is it will force digg to _authenticate_ their users and unique diggs and list their domains, etc. If they want legitimacy, and support of advertisers I shop at, they're going to have to treat it like a real news site.
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1By the way, it took apple's people an _hour_ (I was watching closely) to post any response, and this was the best they could come up with.
- anonym41414, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You should really consider finding a new hobby.
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1This one's kind of fun, especially right now.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2But then what would he do in-between his in-between meals?
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1MacParrot's catching on. Digg is like having a full time job, as the apple employees (or as I like to call them, "Mac Parrots") here will tell you. They get paid, I do it for free. You decide who to listen to.
- anonym41414, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You should really consider finding a new hobby.
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1I'd also like to add that I've spent over $2500 this past year (and in general, with subscriptions, etc. spend over $1,000 a year on average with them) on microsoft software and services as an _individual_, never mind any customers recommendations I've provided them. Their support of this web site, may just be enough for me to --- not so much stop using their software as stop buying new software from them. What I have from them works, and i see no demand to buy more if I don't have to. For example, They have .net 3.0 which is big for Vista, i see no reason to move my software (I'm a developer) beyond .net 2.0 which works fine on XP (and quite possibly on 98), and .net 2.0 support is getting better in Linux, so why move my software to net 3.0 if I don't have to and just let the mono developers develop software that lets my software run there. My customers aren't clamoring for .net 3.0.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3STOP THE PRESSES! robwilkens is threatening to stop buying Microsoft products! Panic in the streets! Parents rushing their children into shelters!...Oh wait...no one cares
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Dugg.... Because I agree... But I'll persist and I hope others do too in making large sponsors/advertisers responsible for sites that do what users/owners of this site are doing.
- Herolint, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think I'm going to stop what I'm doing, kneel down, and offer a prayer of thanks for that little block button next to robwilkens name.
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I will too, that's one less "Digg Down" I'll get.

- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1There was at least one comment every 2-5 minutes from the apple p.r. machine until I posted this comment (twice). Suddenly there as silence for _over_ half an hour starting when I posted that comment. They must be scrambling trying to decide how to handle this. If these were independent comments by random people, no one would care. Now it's _obvious_ it's coordinated.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Could it be that no-one cares about you and your bizarre conspiracy theories about nothing?
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1I mean comments _anywhere_ in the article, not replies to my comment specifically.

- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2I've never seen office people in any office setting *excited* about an office suite. Is this really *that* revolutionary (I'm expecting someone well reply "Why yes, it is") that it will actually make people _want_ to work? You know, in my most recent jobs and where my parents work (different places) Corel Wordperfect is still the word processor/suite of choice. It *rules* the legal world still, and is exclusively used in the New York State Courts -- you wouldn't expect anyone on digg to even know what wordperfect is nowadays. People here are in their own worlds separate from this place some of us like to call reality.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8If you need to use graphics or it isn't just a text document then you have to endure the hell that is office's truly crap formatting tools and iWork is awesome by comparison plus it's very well integrated with the rest of the mac software in a way that office will never be. I really can't stress how much, much better keynote is than powerpoint.
By the way, pretentious much?- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Ok, did you even stop for a second and read the comment you were replying to? I was supporting wordperfect and didn't even mention word, you "reply" and go off on Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint. You must be new at Apple and not understand that the products you are talking about and the product I am talking about is not only a different product but made by an entirely different company. In fact, I believe WordPerfect is the oldest wordprocessor _Still_ in existence, and it's not going away overnight.

- hoovcluck, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3I wonder is iWork 08 is compatible with ***** 07?
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There wasn't an 07 version of *****.
It went from the 06 release which contained *****, straight to the 08 release which contains version two of iBlocktheapplesectionalreadyyoumoron.- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"iBlockthepaplesection...." apparent it doesn't work if your commenting on an Apple article.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There wasn't an 07 version of *****.
- zenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Is there a Windows version?
- zenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4:)
- peterinjapan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Outstanding. These are some of the ways that Mac are, in fact, WAY cheaper than PCs for running a company with. Much more reasonable prices on things, no $700-per-seat-per-year monopoly to deal with, and all my machines last much longer. (I just retired a 2001 iMac from use).
What business am I in? We're an "indies" software (Japanese dating-sim games) developer doing PC software entirely on Macs. In a word, bwa ha ha ha ha.- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Isn't stealing software "tradition" in places like Japan and china? If so, the cheapest software is the free commercial software that runs on the cheapest hardware, they're not stupid out there either.
- iJump, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hey, Peter! I didn't know that you were on Digg. I just thought that you were that guy who blogged about various parts of Japanese culture. Anyway it's nice to see you here, and I hope you enjoy your stay at Digg
/ For the uninitiated, Peter is the founder of J-List, an online store that sells snacks, anime, manga, photobooks, and other various trinkets of Japanese culture.:

- zezerik, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1I like Microsoft Office. (watch the steve jobs ***** lickers digg this down for simply "liking" something they don't. it's hilarious)
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I dugg your comment, but I'd like to note that it was already dugg down when I got here ;-), it's truly amazing.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I like Microsoft Office too. I use it on my work PC and at home on my Mac. Is it OK if I digg you down for being diggsturbed? Yeah that works fine.
- Herolint, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2You're probably getting buried for posting an irrelevant comment in this forum, just as somebody would if they posted an "I like iWork" comment in an article about Microsoft's products.
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1If someone posted an "I like iWork" comment in a Microsoft office article, I know I sure as hell wouldn't "bury" them.
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Proposal from someone who doesn't matter: Either allow articles to be dugg down (reduced in diggs) by users of the site, or don't allow comments to be dugg down -- make it consistent.
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2It's official *5* of the top ten *news* stories of the day are now about apple -- not products for apple but products by apple from apple for apple in the form of apple press releases. Digg is no longer a news site, it is just a big 'apple section' with a bunch of artists who don't realize that there's cheaper software and hardware that does all the same stuff better. By now, anyone that matters has left. I'm only here because I'm unemployed (not looking for work either, I can't I'm disabled) and it's fun to laugh at you guys. A Major bridge collapses in Minnesota, barely a notice here on digg --- today's bigg news is about the mine that collapsed a day or two ago and a search for people burried and the question of whether or not it was really an earthquake or not -- but on digg: What's a miner? What do you mean earthquake? This site is so not news anymore it's stupid.

- bawpcwpn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I was just playing with Numbers and in the templates I saw a marks thing which teachers can input their assessments for a class and it's weighting, input all their students results and it will give you all kind of statistics on it. All from a template and it looks good too. Thumbs up for Apple :) I'm sure many teachers with Macs and iWork '08 will find that template useful.
- silentseraph, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0wow, love the immense creativity apple has. for a computer based around making "cool stuff" their product names aren't too "cool". I especially love how awesomely creative slapping an I in front of everything is.
- rnawky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0How long before we see screenshots of iWork crashing?
- HornyGoat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Perhaps after Excel has crashed 1000 or so times, if we're lucky?
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1B...B.B..B.But apple computers don't crash, and Excel runs on an Apple, therefore Excel has never crashed on an apple, no?
- HornyGoat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Perhaps after Excel has crashed 1000 or so times, if we're lucky?
- Legolover64, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Does Numbers do VB macros or some sort of higher-level processing?
I need that sort of functionality.- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My bet is no, it doesn't even support large numbers of columns and rows.
