- FeartheKnighted, on 10/25/2007, -1/+59Poor kid
having to do schoolwork. - Urusai, on 10/25/2007, -3/+51Too bad Dell can't be used to teleconference. Windows has a DRM cutout on cancer kid video feeds.
- RAEP, on 10/25/2007, -11/+56YO HOLMES TO BEL-AIR
- alperea, on 10/25/2007, -1/+43Dang Apple is mean, making a poor sick kid do schoolwork. Microsoft would've given him a 360 and Halo 3.
- damndj, on 10/25/2007, -6/+30Way to piss off kids with cancer.
- tizz66, on 10/25/2007, -3/+27Yeah, he'll be able to look like he's at the beach, or on a rollercoaster. Awesome.
- SimonGray, on 10/25/2007, -6/+27*rolls eyes*
- lava, on 10/25/2007, -1/+20My computer keeps me out of class while battling the blue team.
- efcjoe, on 10/25/2007, -0/+18“iChat makes it possible for kids who are ill to still participate, without anyone seeing them.”
Don't know what it is but something seems a little... off... with that quote. - Blizaine, on 10/25/2007, -6/+23just think what they (he and the school) will be able to do once they both get Leopard and all the iChat content sharing and presentation abilities. That will be awesome.
- wild, on 10/25/2007, -1/+14I just love inspiring stories. :)
- BlackJackJester, on 10/25/2007, -8/+19Because, you know, this had to be done with an Apple, and nothing else would have worked. Its a good story, but the use of "Apple" is just a product plug. This could have been done with any computer system, and the story would hold its own just fine without the plug.
- boonesfarm, on 10/25/2007, -6/+16Let's be honest. The credit goes to Bel Aire Elementary School and his parents on this one. If you want to credit Apple, you might as well fawn over the kids ISP too.
This can be accomplished with a $600 Dell and $10 worth of skype minutes.
I'd love someone to do a mockup of this ad, showing a balding 50 year old in his boxers trolling kiddy porn. "Brought to you by Apple". - Haohmaru, on 10/25/2007, -0/+9Yeah, woo, a webcam and IM. Woo, yea, go Apple. Woo.
- Makaveli604, on 10/25/2007, -3/+12Another fanboy. If you cannot see ANY advantages Windows has over OSX, you are simply stupid.
And brainwashed. - mahdaeng, on 10/25/2007, -0/+8Right! Because that could only possibly have been accomplished by using Apple computers.
- yfguitarist, on 10/25/2007, -10/+18I'm sorry, but I can't help but roll my eyes at this. Apple posted this story on their own site. I'm not saying it's not a true story or that cancer is great, but they're obviously trying to look good by boasting about it.
- need4speed, on 10/25/2007, -2/+9this kid doesn't need a macbook! he needs marijuana.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -3/+9Hey look everyone! It's spam from Apple that was dugg up by the ASA (Apple Sheep Army)! Now of course, if Microsoft posted this same-type story they'd be evil for wanting to publicize their own charity work, but alas this was from Apple and of course it's a gift from the lord almighty. Not to mention this same concept could be done on any computer with any OS. Who cares?!
Beyond that, where's all the stories about how the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gives more away than Apple ever thought about? All I'm saying is, it's ridiculous people dugg this idiotic promotional story. - wild, on 10/25/2007, -6/+12What is really inspiring is that other kids latched on to the idea. Thats pretty damned cool to see in today's world.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -1/+7Using someones critical health condition.
Sad. - MaxPayne3476, on 10/25/2007, -2/+8yea even bill gates dropped out of school! ***** you Jobs!
*hugs MBP* shhhshhh I was just kidding, don't cry - norman619, on 10/24/2007, -3/+9It is. It's called distance learning and you can do it using any OS you like.
- cocokr1sp, on 10/25/2007, -1/+7He has cancer he isn't retarded...It isn't that hard to run an installer and hit next. ***** fanboys are so ignorant
- tont0r, on 10/25/2007, -1/+7You must have never done video conferencing. I've done it many times years ago on windows based machines and never had a problem. If the story had been 'boy with cancer uses windows based OS to go to continue school', it wouldnt have made it to the front page.
- sardiax, on 10/25/2007, -1/+6I was diagnosed with leukemia in my freshmen year of high school and had private tutors for the whole of sophmore and junior year. With no immune system, being trapped inside, couldn't go to malls, movies, out to eat - tv, video games, books, movies, and the internet can only do so much to try to keep such a person entertained. Some days the only thing to look forward to was the tutors and actually having something that I could do.
- cbrunet, on 10/25/2007, -1/+6I wonder if his situation would have been better had he been chillin out maxin, relaxin all coolin, and shootin some b-ball outside of the school, rather then have cancer.
- airstrike, on 10/25/2007, -1/+6for a minute there (while i was scrolling down) i was afraid nobody else had thought the same. thank god some people actually have some OPINION on what they read. typical digg fan-boys.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/27/2007, -1/+6You don't need Skype minutes for computer-to-computer. The point is that they used Apple computers, not that it couldn't have been done without. It's a nice human story, and yes, an ad for Apple (shocking, I know). Yes, the school and parents are responsible for the solution in the end.
- meshman, on 10/25/2007, -2/+6Too bad you can't do this with any other kind of computer.
- crazyryan, on 10/25/2007, -7/+11I'm glad he can participate in his classes, but cmon, even Windows can do this.
- scoot2006, on 10/25/2007, -1/+5Who the ***** keeps making these awkward titles? (awkward = "computers keeps").. come on...
- qetuo, on 10/28/2007, -5/+9why didnt apple just give him a new macbook, by the sound of it they didnt do anything to help, like didnt give hardware or support. apple are just tackig advatage of the poor boy in my opion. But its really good what the school did.
- thugok, on 10/25/2007, -1/+5Because, without image, Apple is just an overpriced PC with a 'nerf' operating system.
- MacParrot, on 10/25/2007, -1/+5WHAT!!! You mean Apple put their own products in a good light on their website??? The BASTARDS!
- tont0r, on 10/25/2007, -1/+5Either you never used a webcam or you are just an idiot. It takes 2 ***** seconds to get a webcam working on any OS.
- jakem1, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4My cynical mind is appalled that Apple would use this for marketing. If it's a true story, can't they just keep it to themselves and be satisfied with their warm, inner glow. Why use it to sell computers?
- cocokr1sp, on 10/25/2007, -2/+5OMG AMAZING!!! This is just one of the many things Apple computers can do that Windows based PCs have never/will never be able to do! Good one Apple! (Sarcasm btw)
- rinks, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Thank God that kids in Bel Air are taken care of. More people should live there instead of, like, New Orleans.
- bandomac, on 10/25/2007, -2/+5It's on Apple's site, duh. Apple highlight professional uses of Macs, and Educational uses of Macs. It is a general interest story to educators and parents, and it is another way for Apple to show THEIR products in use. Why would they want to promote Dell. or HP. Apple's website was built to market Apple's products. Just Duh....
- ratzfatz, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3I really wonder why they show a kid in front of a notebook with a mounted iSight camera on top. Later on the article shows the integrated camera, even in close-up view. I usually support Apple in public (since working and earning my money with the Mac starting with System 4.5) - but this is an unprofessional made (and probably very old) mock-up. Apple PR dept. deserves a better agency.
- lukifer, on 10/25/2007, -1/+4Doesn't everybody?
- centerblack, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3I'm super serial.
- djetaine, on 10/25/2007, -2/+5why is this titled "apple computers keeps kid in class..." instead of "video conferencing keeps kid in class"? wtf does it have to do with the fact that its on apple? You can do this with any number of software applications. How about WebEx? He wouldnt have even had to screw with the firewall. Bunch of fanboy bulls***
- centerblack, on 10/25/2007, -1/+4So in a couple of months the Mac pays for itself because you didn't have to buy $10 of skype minutes. Great point boonesfarm!
- lukifer, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3I think they meant to use "Apple Computers" as the name of the company, unaware that the company is now just called "Apple". I can has benefit of shadow of doubt?
- panic, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Those bastards! The kids at home dying, the last thing he wants/needs is to have to do school work. Screw you apple!
- SaintStryfe, on 10/24/2007, -4/+7One of my favorite Apple jokes:
Steve Jobs has to be different with everything. I mean, look at his cancer battle. He has a rare cancer to start, but of course, dippy hippy Steve Jobs gets one of the rarest types of Pancreatic Cancer. Less then a few percent of cases are of Steve's type of Cancer. It happens to be fully treatable unlike most Pancreatic Cancers, and is not debilitating. Does everything this guy make have to be user friendly? - shawnz, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2are you kidding? the internet is endlessly entertaining.
- logandurand, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Because this could have been done with *any* computer, and Apple is exploiting this kid's unfortunate circumstances to sell their products.
